03x13 - A Massive Discovery

Post by bunniefuu »

[Russell] Zack?

[narrator] Previously

on Expedition Bigfoot.

[Bryce] Here we go.

There's some type
of predator in the area.

Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa.

Did you just see that?

Check this out.

I have no idea what that is.

[dramatic music playing]

[Mireya]
I just heard something.

I have a heat signature.

All right. Follow me.

Hey, Ronny?

[Ronny] Yeah?

What the [bleep]

[dramatic music playing]

[Mireya] It's over here.

[narrator] After discovering

a possible tree structure
last night,

Ronny Le Blanc
and Dr. Mireya Mayor

have returned to investigate

the site in the light of day.

[Ronny] Geez.

Crazy that we walked
past this at first.

[Mireya]
I think now in the daylight,

it's even clearer
why we just walked past it.

Look at how...
It really does just blend in.

You know what it almost
looks like to me

is that it was a tree itself

because it's so long
that it was broken off

and actually
deliberately put up there.

A human undoubtedly
could have built this.

I just don't see why
they would go

-to such an effort.
-[Ronny] Right.

And I don't understand

how you're gonna get something

The more that I'm looking
at this structure up close,

I can tell you
that something built this.

And this was built
with some sort of intent.

from the base of the tree,

all the way up.

And I know this
is even higher than that.

For us, this is difficult,

but something
that is 8-feet tall,

this is gonna be easy
to place.

-[Mireya] Hey, Ronny?
-Yeah?

I just noticed that this here

couldn't have just
naturally fallen

the way that it's literally
stuck into the ground.

It's like something
with great force,

like, if you take a shovel

and you plant it
into the ground?

It's pretty deep in there.

-Like, it's solid.
-Interesting.

So it looks like
deliberately placed

to keep it in position.

[Mireya] So bizarre.

[Ronny] You know, what?

This reminds me
of that tree structure we saw

in Washington State
just a few weeks ago.

That same huge one up top,

I'm wondering
if this is something similar.

[Mireya] Ronnie?

-[Ronny] Yeah?
-[Mireya] Come over here.

What the hell?

Looks like a marker to me.

[Mireya] That structure
was right next to Lake Fear,

where we had
all that activity.

[Ronny] I think it's a sign.
Lake Fear was a hotspot,

so maybe we discovered
another one.

[dramatic music playing]

[narrator] While the team
continues their investigation

of the possible
tree structure,

Bryce is looking into a piece
of local evidence

captured
more than 50 years ago.

Northern California
is connected to Bigfoot

for several different reasons,
but none more important

than the Patterson-Gimlin
film.

It was filmed right near here
at Bluff Creek,

and still, to this day,
remains one of the strongest

pieces of evidence

supporting the existence
of Bigfoot.

I know for me, personally,
it's this film

that really captured
my imagination

when I was looking at
a creature

that wasn't supposed to exist

walking across a sandbar.

Also, one of the most
analyzed films in history.

Even though there's so much

that we've already learned
from this film,

I still think there's more
to be gleaned from it,

which is why I've invited

special effects and costuming
expert, Bill Munns,

to come and talk with me
about it.

He's been studying
this film for decades,

and he's probably the world's
foremost authority

on the Patterson-Gimlin
film footage.

Bill, it's so great
to finally meet you,

thank you for taking the time
to speak with me today.

-My pleasure.
-[Bryce] Let's jump right in.

-So...
-Sure.

for those who don't know,

how did this film come to be?

Back in 1967,

a gentleman named
Roger Patterson

was very interested
in the Bigfoot phenomenon,

and he had been exploring,

looking for evidence
for quite a few years.

He received word

that there was a track way

in Northern California,

so he got Bob Gimlin

to come along with him

and manage the horses.

And they wandered around
for actually

two and a half,
almost three weeks

and didn't really find
anything at all.

And Roger thought,

"Well, let's just take
another day

and we'll just check
the creek area."

And they come around
this big log jam

and they see something
crouched down

by the side of the creek.

Roger immediately grabbed
his camera from a saddlebag

and he literally started
chasing after this subject,

which is our lady
we call Patty.

Finally planted himself down
solid so he could get

a real good shot,
panning with her,

which is what we call
the look-back sequence

where she's walking
along here,

and then she continues
walking among the trees,

and finally walks
away, disappears,

and he runs out of film.

This film is, by far and away,

the gold standard
for evidence of Bigfoot.

This stands
in a league of its own.

Oh, yeah. Completely.

I know your background,
but can you tell me

a little bit about
how you got interested

into this film in particular?

Some people go into it

and their brain
keeps telling 'em,

"It must be a hoax,
it cannot be real."

-Right.
-So when they look at it,

they think,
"Oh, yeah, it looks fake."

But I took my background

in makeup effects
and creature effects,

to be able to actually analyze
this specifically

and say,
"Okay, it is not a costume

because there's quite a few
number of things

that are unusual
about her body."

[Bryce] Can you tell us
why we sort of assume

-that it's a female Sasquatch?
-[Bill] Sure.

She had a structure
on her chest wall

which can only reasonably
be described

-as mammalian breasts.
-[Bryce] Yeah.

So, based on that, we assume

we are looking at
a female of the species.

Let's talk about

the body proportions of Patty.

[Bill] Certainly.
One is that she has

a relatively long torso
and relatively short legs

which is an unusual
human proportion.

Interesting.

Humans who tend to be taller

than average height

usually gain the extra height
in longer legs.

Well, we also see that
in great apes as well, right?

The shorter legs
the longer arms.

[Bill] Yes.
Especially in the gorilla.

There's also something
very curious

about this black patch
on the back of her neck.

Most people don't realize.

A primate's physiological
response

to stress, or anxiety, or fear

-is to actually raise...
-Raise the hair on that.

up the hair, the hackles
of the neck as we call it.

Supports the context
of her being surprised

by these two guys
on horseback.

Exactly.
These strange creatures

that she doesn't know
exactly what they are

and does not know
if they're threatening to her.

Wow.

But going back to that time,

we didn't have stretch
for a cloth.

That was not introduced
until the middle late '80s.

So the fur cloth
was basically like carpet.

There was no elasticity
whatsoever.

[Bill] Now, the figure
has a rather remarkably

-well-defined calf muscle.
-[Bryce] Mmm-hmm.

It's quite remarkably,
aside from the fact

that we have this
excellent definition

of the calf muscle.

When we look
at the footage itself

when she's stepping forward

right about there,

she's raising up her toes
as she plants her heel...

-[Bryce] Oh, yeah.
-on the ground.

And then immediately,
the next frame,
it drops down...

-[Bryce] Wow. Right there.
-and it flattens out.

There are elements here

that simply
could not be accomplished

with suit technology in 1967.

Incredible.

Does that leave the subject
of this film a real Bigfoot?

Is that what we're looking at?

The only thing I will say,
conclusively,

is that this is a real,
organic body.

This is not a human
in a costume.

Wow.

So many people,
when they think of Bigfoot,

they think of these tall,

hairy creatures of the woods.

Do we know how tall
the subject in this film is?

And is there any way
to prove it conclusively?

So there are conflicting
theories

trying to estimate her height.

As far as I know,
neither one of the theories

is fully embraced,

even among
the research community.

So, we're still looking
into ways

to get to that definitive
conclusion.

But in my opinion,
I don't think

-we're there yet.
-That's incredible.

So there's much work
to be done?

-[Bill] Yes, there is.
-[Bryce] Wow.

[dramatic music playing]

Bill, I see you, you know,
sort of light up still

talking about this film
and the subject in it.

And I get the same way.

I mean,
I'm really revitalized.

When you begin to realize
this is real,

it's almost like
you've seen a ghost.

Your brain is trying
to process it,

"How can this be?"

But this is something real.

This is a species of primate

that is unclassified
scientifically.

So, it is not a man in a suit.

Hundred percent
certain of that.

[dramatic music playing]

[phone rings]

Hey guys, what's going on?

[Ronny] I just wanna
let you know

that we're here in this area

where we had
all this activity,

and we've discovered
a tree structure

that looks identical
to the one that we found

-above Lake Fear.
-[Bryce] Oh, really?

[Ronny] Yeah.
It looks very, very similar.

[Bryce] Well, that's amazing.

[Ronny] Lake Fear was, like,
this central location

for these creatures,
and I think this structure

is like a sign or a beacon

that this place
is just as important.

I'm telling you,
there's a connection,

I can feel it.

[Bryce]
You know, you talk about

activity in that area,

I spotted something
on the security camera,

just above
where you were last night.

And I saw
what can only be described

-as a cluster of light.
-[Ronny] Whoa.

Well, we got a crazy thermal
here last night too,

and it looks bipedal, Bryce.

[Bryce] Oh, wow.

[dramatic music playing]

[Bryce] And, you know,
Russell spotted something

strange on the ridge
right above there.

-Whoa.
-[Bryce] You know what, guys?

It looks like we've narrowed
our target zone.

I think we need to focus
on this area.

These creatures are here.

We need to mobilize
and attack this location

with everything we've got.

Okay. This is great.

-Love it, Bryce.
-[Mireya] Let's do this.

[dramatic music playing]

It really feels like
Bigfoot is in the area,

but it's gonna be on us
to find it.

So after talking
to Ronny and Mireya,

we need to focus our search

just between these two ridges

with the river
flowing through its center

and the converted
federal land to the west.

I spoke to Russell...

-Roger that.
-[Bryce] and the whole team,

and we've devised
a plan of attack.

Russell is going to approach
from the east.

[Russell] This doesn't look
bad right here.

[Bryce] He'll first set up
an observation post

overlooking
our new target area.

[Russell] If anything moves,
we're gonna see it.

[Bryce] If he spots something,
we'll move in.

Ronny and Mireya
will be splitting up,

with Ronny coming at the area
from the south.

[Ronny] All right. Here we go.

[Bryce] Near the area
where they spotted

-last night's thermal.
-[Ronny] This is great.

[Bryce] And Mireya will be
approaching from the north.

It's much more mountainous,
so I've set her up

with a horse
and a horse wrangler,

which will make the journey
so much easier.

[Mireya] Rock and roll.

[Bryce]
Once the team is in place,

we'll be moving in.
And if we're right,

the team could be
extremely close

to cornering this creature.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity.

And we're not gonna let
anything stand in our way.

[dramatic music playing]

[Bryce] With the team deployed
in our new target zone,

I'm gonna try and solve
a 50-year-old mystery.

We are heading to the mecca

of Bigfoot encounters,

and that's the
Patterson-Gimlin film site.

Now, Bill Munns
was able to determine

so much from the film,

enough to figure out

that this was not a man
in a suit.

There's still one thing
no one knows for sure.

How big this creature was.

And I believe we have
the technology

to finally solve
that mystery,

and this could greatly affect

how we do our research.

For example, all we have
to go by right now

is witness testimony
that says Bigfoot

are extremely tall.

But what if we determine

Bigfoot is actually
much smaller?

It expands
the amount of evidence

we should be looking at,

like branch breaks
closer to the ground,

or tree structures
that are smaller

than the one Ronny and Mireya
just found.

Or even smaller footprints

should all be taken
into account.

Right here
is where that creature

was first spotted by
Roger and Bob,

who were coming up this creek

before they captured
her making her way

across what was then
a sandbar.

But now,
it's all been overgrown.

But this is the spot.

[dramatic music playing]

-[Bob] Hey, Bryce.
-Hey, Bob.

-How are you?
-[Bob] Fine, Bryce.

How's everything going, buddy?

[Bryce] So I've set up
a mobile satellite

internet connection
with Bob Gimlin

who's the last
surviving witness

of the encounter
to just get more

insight into his experience.

I made it down here

with the help of Rowdy Kelly

from the Bluff Creek Project

and I'm walking this pathway

that that creature
would've been walking

and I imagined
right around here

she would've looked back
at you guys.

You know that stump

was up on the side
of the hill

and back of where
the film was taken.

I see it right now.

It's been flagged
for preservation

that is what's known as
the smiley face stump.

[Bob] You know to be able
to see her walk away,

there's no question in my mind

about what was happening
you see

because I saw it
I was right there

but people will just say
you're imagining things.

But I know what I saw,
know what was real.

[Bryce] Right. I know.

It just... It's unfortunate

that so many people
have tried to discredit you

-over the years.
-[Bob] God. Yeah.

It was unreal.

People could judge me
and say he's full of BS

-or whatever you know?
-[Bryce] Yeah.

Well, Bob, it's your spirit

and unwillingness to back down

that inspires us
to keep doing the work

and just keep searching
for the truth.

Thank you.
Thank you very much.

Well, look, Bob,
I can't thank you enough

but before I let you go,

what do you think was the key
to your success out here?

[Bob] Well, cowboy talk.

I'd recommend riding a horse

as much as you possibly can,

you see so many things
from the back of a horse

that you wouldn't see
otherwise

because a horse movement
would be just like

deer or an elk moving

and so it'd sneak up on
a lot of things

because it's natural.

[Mireya]
We'll keep headed this way.

See if you can find anything.

[narrator]
On the northern edge

of their smaller target zone.

Mireya is traveling

the mountain trails
with Autumn,

a local horse wrangler.

-[horse neighing]
-[Mireya] Ooh.

She didn't like something
right there.

[horse neighing]

[Miryea] Whoa.

Autumn is a local rancher

who has been riding horses

from the time she could walk.

She knows the behavior
of the animal,

she knows the woods,
and she's a hunter

so she knows how to track.

Normally, when you're on
one of your hunts

where are you
looking for tracks?

[Autumn] Nice soft dirt spots,

basically the deeper
the track is

the more recent it is.

[Mireya]
Being on a prey animal

which horses are,
gives us a superpower

because they're prey animals

and they've survived
in the wild

for millions of years.

They are fully adapted
to perceiving

when there is a predator
nearby

and so we're able to use that
to our advantage.

[Autumn] That looks like, um,
a bobcat track.

[Mireya]
Some deer tracks there.

Here's a track over here.

There's tracks everywhere
around this.

So we're definitely
in a good area.

[horse neighing]

[Autumn] She's not liking
something here.

[Mireya] So she just stopped
dead in her tracks

as soon as we got up here.

Did something spook you?

Her ears pointed
in that direction,

like she's focused in on it.

Like something's moving.

There's something
headed that way.

So, we'll head...

Let's keep going
that way then.

-We'll head that direction.
-Yeah, let's go and see

if we see any other...

-[Autumn] Yup.
-bigger tracks.

[Russell] So far
it's been fairly quiet today.

[narrator]
Russell has been perched

in his observation post,

scanning the team's
new smaller

target zone for hours.

[Russell]
So what I'd do normally

in a situation like this,

I'll take the lowest clearing

on the right-hand side

and work from right to left.

Once I'm finished
with that clearing,

I'll move to the next one

that's just slightly above it

and I'll do the same thing.

[suspenseful music playing]

I'd like to know what that is.

See if I can zoom in on that.

See down here by this tree,
just this dark shape.

I don't know what it is,

it's like my gut tells me

there's something
not right here.

Instinctively
I just can't keep my eyes

off of it.

I'm gonna have a look at this.

There's something
about this space

that if I were hiding,

this is where I would be.

Check this out.

What's tall enough
for this to be in the way of?

A bear at best
will stand maybe this tall.

That's really high
off the ground.

Is that the height
of a Bigfoot?

Yeah, I don't know.

But I hope Bryce
can figure out that answer.

[Pete] We got the right
piece of gear for this.

[Bryce] Yeah.
I love hearing that.

We're gonna get
the first ever LiDAR scan

of the Patterson-Gimlin
film site.

[narrator] Utilizing LiDAR
to scan the area,

imaging expert Pete Kelsey,

who previously helped
the team

on their Washington
expedition

will create a precise
three dimensional

composite of the terrain.

That data will then be fed

into specialized software
and combined

with the 1967
Patterson-Gimlin film,

from their exact measurements

of any object in the frame
can be deduced,

including
the creature known as Patty.

[Pete] Off we go.

[Bryce] Yeah, let's do it.

That thing works so fast.

I'm already getting
so much data.

If we're here
more than 20 minutes,

-we're working too hard.
-[Bryce] Wow.

That's incredible.

[Pete] In the day
that you can measure anything.

And where that gets
really cool

is where you start
integrating that

-with the original film.
-Wow.

[Bryce]
The technology we're using

is something people
couldn't have even dreamed of

when the film was originally
shot over five decades ago

but now we're using it
to pinpoint

every surviving landmark
to finally,

after 50 years,

determine exactly how tall
this creature was.

[Ronny] The clearing should be
just around the corner here.

[Chris] It's nice
and quiet up here.

[Ronny] Good.

[narrator] While Mireya
and Russell

cover northern
and eastern portions

of their targeted
search area,

to the south,
Ronny has enlisted the help

of a specialist with
a very unique set of skills.

As our target zone
becomes more narrow,

I'm more and more
convinced that

we are in the right spot.

So today, I'm really excited
because we brought in
Chris Duncan

and he has a unique ability
to help us locate Bigfoot.

So, remote viewing
allows you to access places

without being there
with just using your mind,

-your consciousness?
-Yeah.

One of the major events
was when President Carter

actually admitted that
they used the remote viewer

to locate a downed aircraft
in Africa.

[Ronny] Wow.

[narrator] Originally studied
at the Stanford
Research Institute,

remote viewing is a technique
used to survey any location

around the world...

using the mind.

This phenomena caught
the attention of the CIA

in the 1970s.

They poured
millions of dollars

and spent over 20 years
developing the practice.

Declassified documents
confirm this technique

has been used
to uncover foreign

and domestic intelligence.

[Ronny] So if we're actually
trying to find

a Bigfoot that might be
in the area,

do you think we'll have
the ability to pinpoint

where they are in this forest?

We'll get an idea
where it's out on the map

or we'll get a description
of where it's at.

Maybe we'll get both.

[Ronny] That'll be incredible.

Using remote viewing,
Chris can find anything

from your lost car keys
to a fugitive on the run.

So I really feel like
this is gonna change

the entire game for us.

[ominous music playing]

So when you're remote viewing
cold like this,

what is it that your mind
is trying to focus on

or latch on to the...
To get started?

I'm going to be asking
in my mind

where we could potentially
find a Bigfoot.

-Okay.
-So it'll be

their specific energy
that I'm trying to look at

and then I'll try to back off
a little bit

and sort of describe
the surroundings.

Really, we don't know
what we're gonna get.

Okay.

What I think we should do now
is probably take out a map.

-Okay.
-Um, point out

a couple of key places
you think

there might be something
going on.

I have the map here.

We're focusing
all of our attention

in this one area

where I had rocks
thrown at me.

And we've also found
some interesting structures,

seems to be
where something's coming in,

we're close to the river.

Okay. I need to write down
something here.

Part of the process
of remote viewing

is putting pen to paper,

and creating what's called
a signal line,

this lets Chris tune in
almost like a radio,

where he can focus
on any type of energy

that might be emitted
from the forest.

He'll visualize what he sees
by drawing it.

And hopefully, we'll hone in
on where these creatures
might be.

Immediate impression
I got was...

I get the impression
of water nearby.

Yeah, okay.

[Chris] There's a wall.

There's a boundary out there
you can't cross.

As Chris starts to hone in

on where Bigfoot
might be bedding down,

he starts to highlight
some markers

that we can identify.

Like a chain link fence.

The second thing is...

What I saw
was a covered bridge

but I focused on the bridge,
bridge is what's important.

There's physical evidence
to be found.

You just have to look.

Wow.

[Chris] You're going
to this place.

You don't know yet,
but you're gonna be there.

Strangely enough,
there's almost like a...

Um...

Okay, um...

so I get the feeling there's
gonna be something tonight.

There's a...

a sense of communication
between a group.

-Like a family?
-[Chris] Yeah.

There's other things
going on nearby.

Closer than you think.

Okay.

Closer than I think
to basecamp?

Something close by to us now.

[Ronny] Okay.

That just gave me the chills.

Yeah.

Like, right now,
there's something...

-Right now, like, uh...
-behind us.

Like a feeling like us
being observed.

Oh, [bleep].

I wanna just scan this.

Man, you got my mind
spinning now.

[Chris] Are you
seeing anything?

Nothing on the thermal.

I will say this is
the first time I felt like,

uh, almost evasiveness
to viewing something.

[Ronny] So maybe
they're cloaking

and making
themselves invisible?

That's really interesting.

[Ronny] Well, Chris,
thank you for your help.

If there's something out
there,

we're gonna find it.

-[ominous music playing]
-[crickets chirping]

[narrator]
One mile to the north,

Mireya and Autumn
have made camp for the night

near the river that splits
the new target zone.

[horse neighing]

[Mireya] Something's wrong.

Something's upsetting
the horses.

-Hey, Josh.
-[producer speaking]

[suspenseful music playing]

Whoa, easy.

Whoa.

Having the horses camping
right next to our tents is...

It's like having this natural
built in alarm system

because these horses can see
and hear things

that we would never detect.

It's possible that maybe
whatever came in

has gone down back
by the river?

[man] Shh, shh, shh.

[twigs snapping]

[Mireya] There's something
right over there.

[horse neighs]

[Mireya] Did you hear that?

[Autumn] Yeah.

[Mireya] Autumn,
this is the loop

-around to the creek.
-[Autumn] Yeah.

If we're gonna see
something moving

or if we're able
to capture any tracks

of what was coming into camp,

it was gonna be down
by the water.

[tense music playing]

[Mireya]
There's deer tracks here.

Will that spook the horses?

Not like they were spooked.

[Mireya] Is it pretty rocky
all the way down?

[Autumn] Yeah.

[Mireya] It's gonna be hard
to find tracks that way then.

[Autumn] Yeah.

[Mireya] I scanned
back and forth

along the river,
across the river.

Basically, I wasn't seeing
anything on the thermals.

We decided that it was best
to go back to camp.

Make sure the horses were okay

and make a plan
for the morning

where we would scour
this entire area.

But for the rest
of the night,

those horses
remain completely restless.

[ominous music playing]

Zack, it's awful quiet.

[narrator]
Southeast of Mireya,

Russell is staking out
a hillside

where he spotted
a strange shadow

and broken branches
earlier in the day.

[Russell]
So it's cold tonight,

so anything that has a drastic
change in temperature

will show up nice and bright.

What is that?

[cameraman speaking]

Right there in front of me.

[cameraman speaking]

[Russell] I'm gonna see
what it is.

[ominous music playing]

What the [bleep] is that?

[cameraman speaking]

[Russell speaking]

-[leaves rustling]
-[ominous music playing]

[Russell] Look how those trees
are bent over.

What the heck?

I'm working my way down
this hillside

from these gigantic redwoods.

And literally within
a hundred feet,

I'm in a whole
different ecosystem.

And suddenly, I realized
there's a strange twisting
of tree branches

that could only be described
as unnatural.

[cameraman speaking]

[Russell speaking]

[cameraman speaking]

[Russell] Look how this is
wrapped around.

It's like it's woven through.

[cameraman speaking]

It's these archways
of these trees

that had been bent down
and pulled over,

and look like they've been
intertwined with each other.

It takes hands to build
something like that.

This just isn't right, man.

[cameraman speaking]

Dude, I am not superstitious
but I'm not walking

underneath that arch.

No freaking way.

[ominous music playing]

[Ronny] Look at this clearing.

We know Bigfoot
love clearings like this.

[narrator] Ronny has entered
the new smaller target zone,

searching for signs
Chris Duncan's remote viewing
was correct,

that a Bigfoot
is lurking nearby.

I'm next to a water source.

Chris said there would be
water nearby.

And I'm in
a very high elevation.

So this is an ideal situation.

[branches rustling]

I'm hearing some movement
coming up here.

It sounds like
something's moving
along the wood line here.

I'm gonna turn on the thermal.

[ominous music playing]

[Ronny]
Nothing on the thermal.

Let's go check it out.

[ominous music playing]

[Ronny] This almost looks like
this has been, like,

scraped by something.

Something was
clearly over here.

-It's a...
-[branches rustling]

[insects chirping]

I'm hearing
something over here.

[branches rustling]

[ominous music playing]

[branches rustling]

[Ronny] That sounded
like foot fall

heading away from us.

I think it's going up a hill.

I can hear it
but I still can't see

what is making the sounds.

I have no idea
what this thing is

and how it's moving so fast.

-[footsteps]
-[ominous music playing]

Holy [bleep].

I followed whatever
that sound was up here.

And the trail
seems to have bottlenecked

into this ravine.

And now I'm at a dead end.

I mean, there's no way
out of here.

These boulders are enormous.

It's kinda freaky
because they're so high up.

Nothing could climb up these,
human, animal, or otherwise.

I'm trying to find
any type of opening.

There's nothing.

[bleep].

It's almost as if whatever
I chased up in here

just levitated out
or disappeared.

[bleep].

[Russell] Man, this place
just gives me the chills.

I'll tell you right now,
I'm not into this at all.

These trees have been bent
into an arch

and intertwined
into each other

and it makes me
uncomfortable.

It's almost like walking
through the front door
of this place.

[cameraman speaking]

[branch snaps]

[Russell] Just...
Hey, did you hear that?

[branch snaps]

[Russell] [bleep].

[cameraman speaking]

[ominous music playing]

[Russell] It's right
in front of us.

[cameraman speaking]

[branch snaps]

[Russell] It's moving down.

Zack, that thing's
moving away from us.

Let's go.

[suspenseful music playing]

[Russell speaking]

Shh, shh, shh, shh.

Is that water?

[water running]

[cameraman speaking]

[suspenseful music playing]

[Russell] Zack, look at this.

There's no way
I can get down there.

Look at that.

That drops straight down.

I wanna get close
to what this thing is,

but I can't because
right in front of me,

I'm looking straight down
a sheer cliff into the water.

This thing would've literally
had to plunge down

over this edge
to get away from me.

There was nowhere else
for that thing to go.

And I don't see it
in any of those trees.

I don't know where it went.

But tomorrow, I'm going back
to the observation post

and keep a lookout.

[ominous music playing]

-[Zoom pings]
-[Dave] Hey, Bryce.
It's good to see you.

Hey, Dave,
great to see you too, man.

[narrator] After analyzing
the LiDAR scan

of the Patterson-Gimlin
film site,

digital visual effects
specialist Dave McDonnell

has contacted Bryce
to deliver

the results of his analysis.

[Dave] Well, I got something
pretty special for you.

We've managed to triangulate
the scene really well

and I think I got some stuff
that you're gonna like.

That's incredible, man.

-Let's dive right in.
-All right.

-[tense music playing]
-[Bryce] Oh, wow.

So Dave,
is this the LiDAR scan

that I'm looking at right now?

-[Dave] Yeah.
-Got you.

Where's all the trees?

It looks so much different

from when I was there
the other day?

[Dave] Yes, so all the trees

have just been digitally
turned off

so we could have a look
through the scene

and just not be confused
by the foliage everywhere.

[Bryce] Got you.

So Dave, tell me
what I'm looking at.

I mean, what are these
green markers right here?

Are those important?

So one of the first things
we did when we got the scan,

is to fly around it
and just try

and identify
the notable landmarks

that we can actually see
in the footage.

So there's several trees
that really stand out.

These trees here...

are the trees that line up
in our footage and our scan.

And why is that necessary
for this process?

[Dave] So, we can recreate
the scene in 3D

accurately the measurements
and we know where she is,

we can actually measure how
big Patty probably is

with a, you know,
high degree of accuracy.

[Bryce] Right.

So in other words,
if you can triangulate

where these landmarks are
in relationship to each other,

your software will tell you
the measurements

of anything in this film?

Yeah.

So with the trees
in the background,

is that all you need
to determine how tall she is?

How do we stop her
in the background,

what we really lacked
was some knowing point

in the foreground
and it really helped us

triangulate the scene.

So we were hunting around
for something

that still exists to this day

that doesn't look like much
in this footage,

it's just this little spot
right there.

This one little piece
of branch

that sticks up a fallen tree,

that one spot there
also lives in the scan

and we identified
to this day.

And there it is.

[Bryce] Oh, my God.

That's crazy
that it's still there.

So it's this
little piece here.

So knowing that point
ended up being

like the whole key
to unlocking,

getting a really accurate
triangulation on this thing.

[Bryce] Wow.

So now you have everything
you need, right?

Yeah.

[Bryce] All right.
Hold on, Dave.

Just so you know,

people have been trying
to determine

the exact height of Patty
for decades.

And they've used
all sorts of measurements

from nearby trees, shadows.

And now we're about
to finally reveal

for the first time
the precise measurements

of just how tall Patty is.

And I can't wait to hear it,
so Dave,

without further ado,
how tall is Patty?

[ominous music playing]

[Dave] All right, so...

this box here
is 1.9 meters tall,

which would put Patty...

about 6'3".

[ominous music playing]

And you feel that
that's totally accurate?

[Dave] Yeah.

You know,
high degree of accuracy.

Well, look, I just wanna
thank you, Dave,

uh, for finally putting
this mystery to bed

once and for all.

I really appreciate
all the hard work

you put into this.

And I think it's paid off
in dividends.

Yeah, it is pretty exciting

to jump on
and do something like this.

I mean, usually,
I apply my skills

to put Hollywood monsters
into films,

not try and extract
some data out of them.

Yeah, I have no doubt.

Well, look, I really
appreciate it and, uh,

thanks again, Dave, and, uh,

we'll talk to you
down the road.

-All right.
-[Bryce] Bye.

You know, um, I have to admit,

there's a small part of me
that was hoping

that the results
would've come back

that Patty stood somewhere
between 7 and 8 feet tall.

But here's what we know,

the subject in this film
is obviously a female.

And what we know
about gorillas

like silverbacks
is that the males

can be up to 25% larger than
their female counterparts.

If that same ratio
holds true for Bigfoot,

then Patty standing at 6'3"

makes a male Bigfoot at over

which coincides perfectly
with what most eyewitnesses
tell us.

And furthermore,
no calculation

of Patty's height
could take away

from all the things
that Bill Munns presented

in his analysis of the film.

That this is not a man
in a suit.

But beyond all of that,

this film represents something
so much bigger to all of us...

that there are
still things left
to discover in this world.

That's why we spend
so much time and energy

putting ourselves
in dangerous situations

looking for these creatures.

[Russell] Something just moved
on the top of that hill.

There's nothing more human
than this need to discover.

[Russell] Oh, check it out.

Like a little black bear
on that side of the hill.

Let me get it settled.

[dramatic music playing]

[ominous music playing]

Zack.

That thing just stood up.

Like, stood up like you and I
would just stand up.

Look at that [bleep]. Dude.

[ominous music playing]
