02x04 - Angelina's adventure

Post by bunniefuu »

[BRIGHT MUSIC]

[SOFT MUSIC]

A sleepy little
Arab town in Algeria.

I'd been in here a couple of times.

Pretty good place to find
a few days' peace and quiet.

I remember a little cafe
just at the edge of the town.

It was peaceful
and pretty quiet there, too.

The flies buzzed in the heat.

The patron's paper from France

was a month old,
but that didn't matter.

He was asleep most of the time.

One or two of the local boys
sat around just trying to keep cool.

Through the bead curtain that was
supposed to keep the flies out,

but didn't,

you could see the hills,

where a lot of Italian settlers

worked pretty hard
cultivating the vineyards.

Right now, one of them is sitting at
the jetty cultivating us.

He's been sitting there
the entire day,

never taking his eyes off us.

Maybe he's an art critic.

Not him.

He's been looking us over
to see if it'll be worth his while

sticking a knife into our backs
the next time one of us goes ashore.

Can't do any harm to
ask him aboard and find out?

Hey, avanti!

[GULLS CALLING]

Con permesso, signore?

Montare.

Grazie, signore.

Grazie tante.

[CHUCKLING]

Buongiorno, signore.

Mi chiamo Nicolo Letti.

Oh. Speak any English?

Ah, si, si, si.

You can?

Mmmm... Poco, poco.

Anything I can do for you?

I got a little job for you, signore.

I give you plenty money.

What kind of job?

It's a little trip to Rome, signore.

Oh, Rome? Cargo of some sort?

Si, signore,
it's a nice little cargo.

Hmm.

What sort of cargo?

You come up to my little farm,
signore,

I give you plenty money.

That sounds very nice, but I don't
think I'm interested right now.

Uh, Mitch,
funds are getting a bit low.

I know.

I don't want to
be indelicate, Mitch,

but you haven't paid us
for over a month.

Time sure flies by, don't it?

There's plenty of money
in my little farm, signore.

OK, where's this farm of yours?

It's on the mountain, signore.
Jebel Akhdar.

Look, you can see it from here.

Up that hill in this heat?

No, I came here for
a little peace and quiet.

Oh, you like my farm, signore.

Plenty peace.

It's a nice, quiet little joint.

[CHILDREN SHOUTING]

[LADY SHOUTING]

[MAN SHOUTING]

Dove Angelina?

[BOTH SPEAKING ITALIAN]

Who's Angelina?

[GENTLE MUSIC]

For years I've saved the money,
signore.

And now you do a little job for me.

It's all yours.

No, you still haven't told me
what the job is.

Not to worry, signore.
It's good for everybody.

Well, now and again,
I don't agree with the law,

but there's some things I wouldn't
touch with a 10-foot pole.

g*n running, dope,
anything like that.

No, no, no,
it's nothing like that.

Not to worry.

What is it?

It's a little kidnapping, signore.

Kidnapping?

Ecco, signore.

Now.

Who am I supposed to kidnap?

Andiamo, signore. I show you.

[CHATTERING]

[GENTLE GUITAR]

[CHILD SHOUTING]

[MAN SHOUTING]

[DISTANT BABY CRYING]

Wooh!

Service!
Huh.

Uh? Oh.

Messieurs.

[SPEAKING OWN LANGUAGE]

Hey, Angelina?

[PUFFS]

Angelina?

Si, signore.
She's my little granddaughter.

Oh, have you lost her?

Oh, dio mio, I wish I could.

Angelina, dove?

[PUFFS]
[SPEAKING FRENCH]

Messieurs.

[VOCALISING]

[SIGHING]

Buongiorno, Vittorio.

[VITTORIO SINGING]

Hercule!

Come stai, huh?

[LAUGHING]

Buongiorno, patrono.

Americano, eh?

[SPEAKING ITALIAN]

Ah, is my little granddaughter,
Angelina, signore.

Buongiorno, signore.

[SPEAKING ITALIAN]

[SPEAKING ITALIAN]

Cesare.

[SPEAKING ITALIAN]

OK, signore? When you going
to take her away, hmm?

You mean...

Angelina--
Si, si.

[SPEAKING ITALIAN]

[GENTLE GUITAR]

I haven't got a licence
to carry dynamite.

Oh, but it's...

It's not dynamite,
it's only Angelina.

Same thing, no dice.

Oh.

[LAUGHING]

[LAUGHING]

Well, then,
look at it like this, Mitch.

It all means
more money in the kitty.

A nice little trip to Rome,
pretty girl up on deck,

the wind blowing through her hair,
nice cotton dress.

You can't break
that nice old man's heart.

Look, Johnny,
this girl is high expl*sive.

So high that when she's around,
breathing gets difficult.

Well, leave all that to me.
Forget about the breathing. Relax.

Oh, sure. She's got a
couple of boyfriends, too.

They're sensitive.

They might try to make
breathing difficult, too.

Well, maybe we
can talk 'em out of it.

Hmm?

You have to try to
talk yourself out of jail.

Even around these parts,
kidnapping must be against the law.

[BRIGHT MUSIC] Here it comes now
by the looks of things.

Halt!

Allez!

And I only spoke to her.

What would they do
if we kidnapped her?

Commissaire de police.

[SPEAKING FRENCH]

Oh, Grant Mitchell.
Glad to know ya.

Enchante, monsieur.

I have a little private business.

Oh, that's all right.

The boys can be pretty deaf
and even dumb when necessary.

[SPEAKING FRENCH]

Eh, Signore Letti

tells me you have met
his granddaughter, Angelina.

Yeah.

A charming girl.
She is a flame, monsieur.

And this town is full of moths.

You follow me?

All the way.

I should think that about a third
of the male population of the town

are quite prepared to cut
each other's throats because of her.

One or two of them are
not inefficient in such matters.

As police commissaire,
naturally, I disapprove of this.

Naturally.

Her parents are dead in the w*r.

But she has an uncle in
the Abruzzo Mountains near Rome.

A farmer, a good man.
Strict but upright.

She would be safe.

I take it
she doesn't want to go there.

She has a will of her own, monsieur.
Mmm.

So this Signore Letti,

he wants to have her abducted.

Persuaded.
How about the law?

It's like these gentlemen here.

Occasionally deaf, occasionally
dumb, when necessary, blind.

And all it wants is peace and quiet.

That is the exact truth, monsieur.

I can sympathise with it.

That's all I want, too.

You mean you will not go?
You will not take her to Rome?

I don't want to get
involved in a family squabble.

To preserve law and order?

I think you're exaggerating.

I hope so, but I...

I think that blood will flow.

Au revoir, monsieur.
Au revoir.

We shall meet again, I trust.

We have few visitors here.
That is why I hoped...

You are quite sure?

Yeah, quite sure.

Ah well.

[SINGING]

I'm so glad that you let me
persuade you to come here tonight.

I hope it'll make you
change your mind.

No, I don't think
it'll make me change my mind.

Oh, please,
do not misunderstand me.

I'm not concerned
with law and order.

I'm only concerned with
guiding my flock to immortality.

Yes, and I'm only concerned with
avoiding the need for immortality.

Of course.
But I'm sure you can help us.

Working in the cafe here,
Angelina, is not safe.

When she's with her uncle in Italy,
she'll be much safer.

So will be half my flock.

I think you're putting
much too much blame on Angelina.

You, the commissaire,
her grandfather.

No, no, we are not blaming her.
It's only that we...

...how do you say,
we're bowing to the inevitable?

Angelina is a good girl.
She is all right.

But it is merely that

nature has been

unnecessarily generous.

Musica!

[SPEAKING ITALIAN]

[GENTLE GUITAR]

Go and see for yourself, my son.

[APPLAUDING]

Buonasera, signore.

Good evening.

Mi permetti per favore?

Oh, sure, please. Sit down.

This is your boat
in the harbour, signore.

Mmhmm.

And when are you going to kidnap me?

[LAUGHING]

OK, I'll buy that one.
How do you know about it?

Oh, they've tried it before.

They're always wanting me
to go to my uncle.

For my own good, you understand.

But where he is, the land
is very hard and very poor.

So is my uncle.

Now, if it were Napoli.

Oh, boyfriend?

Two years ago, he went
to Napoli to make his fortune.

Still, he's only dustman.

He empties the baskets
of rubbish into the dust cart.

They don't approve of him.

Well, it takes a long time
to make a fortune.

[SPEAKING ITALIAN]
But he will.

And then I shall go and marry him.

Will you take me to him?

Oh, sure, sure, if I'm around.
Be a pleasure.

Oh, grazie tante, signore.

In meantime...
In meantime,

just keep those wolves at bay.

And enjoy yourself.
Life doesn't last forever.

I think I'm beginning to like you.

I think I'm beginning to like you,
too.

You go away, Americano!
Angelina's for us!

Hercule, the Arab, or me.

We settle it between us,
so you keep out.

Or maybe we beat up your boys
and smash your boat, huh?

And for you...

Pshht!

[DRAMATIC GUITAR]
[GRUNTS]

[MEN GRUNTING]

Better get her home, Padre.

Bit rough inside.

You're not taking her away?

Well, maybe I'm getting old.
I'm just gonna mind my own business.

[PLAYFUL GUITAR]

Bonsoir, monsieur. We meet again.

Yeah.

[SUSPENSEFUL GUITAR]

One amuses oneself,
Monsieur le Commissaire.

[GENTLE GUITAR]
[GULLS CALLING]

Signore!

Oh, hi.

I've had a letter, signore.
My boyfriend, he's been promoted.

Wonderful.

Now he's driving the
dust cart and we can marry.

Great!
Will you take me to Napoli?

Sure.
When?

Whenever you say.

This afternoon?
All right.

I'll go now and get ready.

Oh, grazie tante.

Hey, how about a little less
on the tante

and a little more in the grazie?

Johnny, we're gonna sail this
afternoon. We'll take the girl.

I wonder what made you
change your mind.

It's a woman's privilege
to change my mind.

[LAUGHING]

Tell the boys to get ready.
I just want to finish this.

Right.

Company halt!

[PLAYFUL MUSIC]

Allez!

[GULLS CALLING]

Superb.

Hmm. You think it comes off?

Ah, my friend...

That I have to
place you under arrest

before its completion is tragic.

Yeah, I try to keep
the feeling of heat about it.

Oh, with remarkable success.

What was that about...

...placing me under arrest?

This is most unfortunate.

I have no option.

What for?

Theft.

Theft?

What do you mean by...

...theft?

Yes, ah, ah...

Hmm?

Oh!

A little bird has
given me some information.

Come, monsieur. I'll show you.

[BAG RATTLES]

What the devil is that doing there?

Come, come, monsieur.

We are men of the world, are we not?

Well, you don't think that I...

[SIGHS]

There you are, monsieur.
The evidence.

My sergeant had no difficulty
in planting it.

It is going to work,
this little frame up?

Frame up? Really, monsieur,

you forget where you are.

Si, si, monsieur,
but it is going to work.

The Lord will decide that, my son.

Merci, monsieur Le Cure.

Anybody there?

[GULLS CALLING]

Brother.

[ANGELINA VOCALISING]

[SPEAKING ITALIAN]

Oh, don't you be like that.

You're going to be married
to one of us in a day or two.

And maybe the other two
will be dead, huh,.

What does it matter?

[SPEAKING ITALIAN]
If you don't get out--

You've got to make up your mind now.

No more fooling about, huh?

If you don't,

maybe we'll play
a game of poker for you,

and you don't get no choice.

Get out!
No one will tell me who to marry.

Maybe we give you till tonight.

No more.

Uhhnn!

Huh.

[CHILD SPEAKING OWN LANGUAGE]

[SPEAKING OWN LANGUAGE]

[VOCALISING]

[GENTLE MUSIC]

Visiting time is over, monsieur.

At the same hour tomorrow, perhaps.

Yeah, yeah, wait a minute.
Au revoir, monsieur.

[SPEAKING FRENCH]

Unfortunately, Monsieur Mitchell,

in this country,
an accused person

is frequently kept in prison
for a considerable time

before being brought to trial.

It would be agreeable
if we could avoid that.

Oh, most agreeable.

If, for example, you had thought of
taking a little voyage to...

...Italy?

With... Angelina?

An excellent idea.

I cannot imagine how I failed
to think of it myself.

Monsieur le Commissaire,

as one man of the world
to another,

I've only one thing to say to you.

OK.

You will go?
Mmhmm.

To Rome?
To Naples.

To Naples?
To Naples.

I cannot allow it!

I have a great regard for Angelina.

I should not like
to see her married to a dust man.

Oh, that's all right.
He's been promoted.

He has?
Oh, sure.

Angelina got a letter from him
this morning.

He's now the driver
of the dust cart.

Excellent. He is a young man
of ambition, that one.

Before long he will be driving
an omnibus.

He will make Angelina happy.

Enchante, Monsieur.

Well.

Vive la France!

[BRIGHT GUITAR]

[SIGHING]

Gendarme!

Mamma mia!

E terribile!

She is gone, Angelina,
she has disappeared.

Calm yourself, Signore Letti.

You are addressing the police,
to whom everything is known.

You know where she is?
Of course.

Then everything is all right.

Mille grazie, signor. Mi scusi--

She is with Monsieur Mitchell

who is taking her to Naples.

To Roma, signore!
She has gone to her uncle.

To Naples.

No, no, no, no, no, Napoli.

No, non e possibile.
He is a dust man.

Calm yourself, Signore Letti.
He has been promoted.

He is now the
driver of the dust cart.

E vero? It's true?

It is quite true.

Oh, signore!

E meraviglioso!

E magnifico!

We go to the ship to say goodbye,
eh?

Why not?
Andiamo, eh?

Ah, buonasera, signore.

And where is Angelina?

I've been waiting for her.

She is not here?

No. But she's been away
from home for two, three hours.

Have you been at the cafe?
Not yet, Monsieur.

She may have stopped off there
for some reason.

Johnny, you stay here with the boys.

Be ready to shove off in a hurry.

I'm going to look for the girl.
Oh, si, si.

No, Monsieur le Commissaire.
Angelina has not been here today.

I do not know where she is.

I notice her boyfriends
aren't here today, either.

They may still be at work, Monsieur.

Psst! Psst!

I do not know what to do.

Something may have happened to her
or nothing.

Perhaps a glass of wine,
Monsieur le Cure.

Oh, in the circumstances...

[SPEAKING FRENCH]

You want to find lady?

Say that again.
Baksheesh, Johnny.

Wait a minute.
We're going to get a policeman.

Police no good.

[SPEAKING OWN LANGUAGE]

You come?

Cesare.

Cesare, you--
Basta!

Hercule, help me. Let me go.

In a little time, one of us
is going to win this game.

You go with him.

Until then, shut up!

CHILD: Hi!

One man outside. You come?

Come! Come!

Come! Come!

[GRUNTS]

[SPEAKING OWN LANGUAGE]

Two men outside.

[SPEAKING OWN LANGUAGE] You come!

Come on.

[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]

[FIST HITS]
[GRUNTING]

[TENSE MUSIC]

Attenti!

[GRUNTS]

[MEN GROANING]

[MEN YELLING]
[THUMPING]

[SCREAMING]

[GRUNTING]
[THUMPING]

[SCREAMING]

[GRUNTING]
[SCREAMING]

[SCREAMING]

It's you.

I thought it was Cesare.

Oh, grazie tante, signore.
Grazie.

Say nothing of it, baby.

Attaboy, Johnny.

OK, Junior.

Come on home. Time to go to bed.

[GENTLE GUITAR]

[GULLS CALLING]

[BRIGHT MUSIC]
