what's the story amigos this is kino

with some cool stories for today's story

time

our first story is about a kind woman

and her magical powers

the water the fishes and the otters

would flow out of her hair and return to

the river once more

and we meet a boy who wants to be an

artist in this book read by liz torres

the next morning he hid the box of 64

crayons

under his sweater and he went off to

school while he was

ready and wilfred brimley reads about a

girl who

dreams she spends the day with a gorilla

don't be frightened

hannah said the gorilla i won't hurt you

i just wondered if you'd like to go to

the zoo

look don't scratch poison oak can only

get worse if you scratch it

i know but i can't stand it this itching

is just

k*lling me oh well that's why i put

those socks on

so you won't scratch so tell me what

happened well

we went to this picnic with my parents

see and and i went hiking and when we

came back

it started itching and now it's just

it's just a pit

didn't you know that poison oak is a

nasty plant

well i knew it but i didn't know it i

mean my dad had told me about it but i

didn't know what it looked like

do you know what it looks like now are

you kidding

my mom even gave me this picture here it

is down here yeah

yeah boy oh if you see that stuff watch

out

don't worry i'll be memorizing that

yes i will keno don't don't don't don't

scratch

but i'm going crazy then i hate these

silly socks

they look like a goofball would you feel

better if i read you a book

oh yes anything to take my mind off this

misery

you won't scratch right no no

i won't all right this is a

beautiful story based on a poem by

alejandro cruz martinez

the woman who outshone the sun and it'll

keep your mind off scratching

comfy yeah okay

the day lucia centeno arrived

everyone in the village was astonished

no one knew where she came from yet they

all

saw that she was amazingly beautiful

and that she brought thousands of

dancing butterflies and brightly colored

flowers on her skirts

she walked softly yet with quiet dignity

her long unbraided hair flowing behind

her

a loyal iguana walked at her side

no one knew who she was but they did

know that

nothing's shown as brightly as lucia

centeno

some people said that lucia centeno

outshone the sun

others said that her glorious hair

seemed to block out the light

everyone felt a little afraid of someone

so

wonderful and yet so

strange

there used to be a river that ran by the

town almost the same river that runs by

there now

and people said that when lucia centeno

went there to bathe

the river fell in love with her

the water rose from its bed and began to

flow

through her shining black ear

when lucia finished bathing she would

sit by the river

and comb out her hair with a comb made

from the wood of the mesquite tree

and when she did the water

the fishes and the otters would flow

out of her hair and return to the river

once more

see the fishes in her hair yeah

the old people of the village said that

although lucia was different from them

she should be honored and treated with

respect

she understood the ways of nature they

said

but some people did not listen to the

elders

they were afraid of lucia's powers which

they did not understand

and so they refused to answer lucia's

greetings

or offer their friendship they called

her cruel names

and they spied on her day and

night lucia did not return the meanness

of the people

she kept to herself and continued to

walk

with her head held high

her quiet dignity angered some of the

people

they whispered that lucia must be trying

to harm them

people became more afraid of lucia and

so

they treated her more cruelly

finally they drove her from the village

isn't that sad yeah

lucia went down to the river one last

time to say goodbye

as always the water rose to greet her

and began to flow through her glorious

hair

but this time when she tried to comb the

river out of her hair

the river would not leave her and so

when lucia centeno left the village the

river

and the fishes and the otters went with

her

leaving only a dry winding riverbed

a serpent of sand where the water had

been

everyone saw that lucia centeno was

leaving

and that the river the fishes and the

otters were leaving with her

the people were filled with despair they

had

never imagined that their beautiful

river would ever leave them

no matter what they did

where once there had been green trees

and cool breezes

now no more rain fell

no bird sang no otters played

the people and their animals suffered

from thirst

people began to understand as

never before how much the river

the fishes the otters even the trees and

the birds had meant to the village

they began to understand how much

the river had loved lucia centeno

the elder said that everyone must search

for lucia and beg her forgiveness

some people did not want to they were

too afraid

but when the drought continued everyone

finally agreed to follow the elders

advice

and so the whole village set out

in search of lucia

after many days of walking the people

found the iguana cave

where lucia had gone to seek refuge

lucia was waiting for them but they

could not see her face

she had turned her back to the people

at first no one dared say a word

then two children called out

lucia we have come to ask your

forgiveness

please have mercy on us and return our

river

lucia centeno turned and looked at the

people

she saw their frightened tired faces

and she felt compassion for them at last

she spoke i will

ask the river to return to you she said

but just as the river gives water

to all who are thirsty no matter who

they are

so you must learn to treat everyone with

kindness

even those who seem different from you

the people remembered how they had

treated lucia

and they hung their heads in shame

seeing that the people were truly sorry

for what they had done

lucia returned with them to the village

and began to

comb out her hair she combed out the

water

she combed out the fishes she combed out

the otters

and she kept on combing until the river

had returned

once more to where it belonged

the people were overjoyed to have their

river again

they poured water over themselves and

over their animals

they jumped into the river and they

laughed and cried with happiness

in all the excitement no one noticed at

first that lucia

had disappeared again when the children

asked the elders where

she had gone the elders replied

that lucia had not really left them

though they would not be able to see her

she would

always be there guiding and protecting

them

helping them to live with love and

understanding in their hearts

did you like that oh gee yeah that was

great

that was just great but but but why did

the people

drive her away from the village oh well

i think they were afraid of her because

they didn't understand her

boy wow it's lucky for the people from

the village that she forgave them huh

well she was hoping that the next time

they saw someone different from them

they would be kind and not mean well i

tell you

i'd like to jump in the river maybe that

had stopped this doggone poison oak well

try not to think

about it keno did you notice something

else about this book

what it's in spanish too see oh yeah

and though they wouldn't be able to see

her she'd always be

there guiding them and protecting them

and

and helping them to live with love and

understanding in their hearts

hi liz how's it going okay isn't this a

yes well it's an old story and i also

speak spanish too

oh i can too i can too hold up

all right i guess so this book is about

a boy who wants to be an

artist and it was written by an artist

think about that

tommy depaola he wrote the book and also

drew and colored the pictures so he's an

artist okay the art lesson

tommy knew he wanted to be an artist

when he grew up

he drew pictures everywhere he went it

was his favorite thing to do

his friends had favorite things to do

too jack collected all kinds of turtles

herbie made huge cities in his sandbox

genie tommy's best friend could do

cartwheels and stand on her head

but tommy drew and drew

and drew his twin cousins who were

already grown up were in art school

learning to be

real artists they told him not to copy

to practice practice practice and

so he did tommy put his pictures up on

the walls of his

half of the bedroom his mom

put them up all around the house

his dad took them to the barber shop

where he worked

tom and nana tommy's irish grandfather

and grandmother had his pictures in

their

grocery store and nana fall river his

italian grandmother

put one in a special frame on the table

next to the photograph of aunt claw in

her wedding address

now once tommy took a flashlight and a

pencil under the covers and drew

pictures on his sheets

oh what fun but when his mom

changed his sheets on monday and found

them she said

no more drawing on the sheets tommy

his mom and dad were having a new house

built

so tommy drew pictures of it and what it

would look like when it was finished

when the walls were up one of the

carpenters gave tommy a piece of bright

blue chalk

tommy took the chalk and drew beautiful

pictures all over the unfinished walls

but when the painters came his dad said

that's it

tommy no more drawing on the walls

tommy couldn't wait to go to

kindergarten his brother

joe told him there was a real art

teacher who came to school to give art

lessons

when do we have our art lessons tommy

asked a kindergarten teacher oh

you won't have your art lessons until

next year said miss bird

but we are going to paint pictures

tomorrow

it wasn't much fun the paint was awful

and the paper got all wrinkly miss bird

made the paint by pouring different

colored

powders into different jars and mixing

them with water

the paint didn't stick to the paper very

well and it cracked

if it was windy when tommy carried his

picture home the paint blew

right off the paper at least you get

more than one piece of paper in

kindergarten his brother joe

said when the art teacher comes you'll

only get

one piece tommy knew that the

art teacher came to the school every

other wednesday he could tell she was an

artist

because she wore a blue smock over her

dress and she always carried a

big box of thick colored chalks

once tommy and jeannie looked at the

drawings that were hung up in the

hallway

they were done by the first graders your

pictures are much

better jeannie told tommy next year

when we have real art lessons you'll be

the best

one tommy could hardly wait

he practiced all summer then on his

birthday which

was right after school began his mom and

dad gave him a box of

64 crayola crayons

regular boxes of crayons had red orange

yellow green

blue violet brown and black this box had

so many other colors

blue violet turquoise red

orange pink and even gold and

silver and copper

claws said miss landers

the first grade teacher next month

the art teacher will come to our room

so on monday instead of singing we will

practice

using our crayons on monday

tommy brought his 64 crayons to school

miss

landers was not pleased everyone must

use the same crayons she said school

crayons school crayons had only the same

old eight colors

and miss landers passed them out to the

class

she said these crayons are school

property

so do not break them peel off the paper

or wear

down the points how am

i supposed to practice being an artist

with school crayons tommy asked jack and

herbie

that's enough tommy miss lander said and

i want you to take those birthday

crayons home with you

and leave them there and joe was right

they only got one piece of paper

finally the day of the art lesson came

tommy could hardly sleep that night the

next morning he hit the box of 64

crayons

under his sweater and he went off to

school while he

was ready the classroom door opened

and in walked the art teacher miss

landers said claus this is mrs bowers

the art teacher

patty who is our paper monitor this week

will give out

one piece of paper to each of you and

remember

don't ruin it because it is the only

piece

you'll get now pay attention to mrs

bowers

class mrs bowers began

because thanksgiving is not too far away

we will learn to draw a pilgrim man

and a pilgrim woman and a turkey

watch carefully and copy me

copy copy

well tommy knew that real artists didn't

copy

oh this was terrible this was supposed

to be a real art lesson

he folded his arms and he just sat there

no what's the matter miss landers asked

tommy looked past her and spoke right to

mrs bowers

i'm going to be an artist when i grow up

and my cousin told me that real artists

don't copy

and besides miss landers won't let me

use my own

64 crayola crayons oh well well

mrs bowman said what are we gonna do

she turned to miss landers and they

whispered together

miss landers nodded

now tommy mrs bowers said it wouldn't be

fair to let you do

something different from the rest of the

class

but i have an idea if you draw the

pilgrim

man and woman and the turkey oh

and if there's any time left i'll give

you another piece of paper

and you can do your own picture with

your own crayons can you do that

well i'll try tommy said with a big

smile and he did

and he did

and he still does

that's right and he and who's that

him him who tommy

the amish that's right so he grew up to

be what

uh an artist and

look at all the pictures he drew

what's that does anybody know what that

alley that's is an alligator

and what's that i don't know that's

right

hey kids will you help me thank liz for

doing such a wonderful job

thank you liz thank you thank you

you know liz that reading was so good

i didn't see keno scratch once that's

how good it was

yeah but but now i'm really really

really suffering

please please please just let me scratch

this once

oh you better not you keno

do you remember that old game we used to

play you know where i'd say

i heard from my friend joe and he told

me that and then you'd come up with

something funny that joe

said oh yeah yeah

oh i remember that game and i remember i

really liked it

well let's play and get your mind off

that poison oak ready

let's do it okay all right you answer

first ready yeah

i heard from my friend bill and he told

me that

ah

he saw a cat scuba diving in the bathtub

that was a good one

okay all right your turn okay okay i

heard from my friend sarah and she told

me that uh that that that she saw a

puppy brushing his teeth

oh because i guess he didn't want to go

to the dentist huh

may i do one more oh it's my turn it's

my turn it's my turn

okay here i go i heard from my friend

wilford and he told me

that oh he saw a gorilla wearing a

raincoat

a girl oh kino

i know where you heard that one where

here from this book gorilla

but you know what i really did hear from

wilford and he told me that he enjoys

gorilla by anthony brown

and he loves reading it to his friend

aurora shall we listen

yeah sure sure yes yes yes a big

resounding yes

okay hannah i guess that's hannah that

pretty little girl

loved gorillas she read books about

gorillas

she watched gorillas on television and

she drew

pictures of gorillas but she'd never

seen

a real gorilla now her father didn't

have time to take her to see one at the

zoo

matter of fact he didn't have time for

anything

he went to work every day before hannah

went to school and in the evening

he worked at home when hannah asked him

a question he would say

not now i'm busy maybe tomorrow

but the next day he was always too busy

not now maybe on the weekend he would

say but on the weekend

he was too tired so

they never did much of anything together

no

the night before her birthday anna went

to bed tingling with excitement

she had asked her father for a gorilla

in the middle of the night she woke up

and saw a very small parcel at the foot

of the bed

it was a gorilla but it was just a toy

hannah threw the gorilla into a corner

with her other toys and went back to

sleep

but in the night something amazing

happened

it was frightened don't be frightened

hannah said the gorilla

i won't hurt you i just wondered if

you'd like to go to the zoo

the gorilla had such a nice smile that

hannah wasn't afraid i'd love to she

said

so they both crept downstairs hannah put

on her coat

the gorilla put on her father's hat and

coat perfect fit

he whispered they opened the front door

and outside they went

come on then hannah said to gorilla and

he gently lifted her up and they were

off

swinging through the trees toward the

zoo look at there

when they arrived at the zoo it was

closed and there was a high wall

all around never mind said the gorilla

up and over they went

they went straight to the primates

hannah was thrilled

so many gorillas she thought they were

beautiful

what kind of sad what would you like to

do now

the gorilla asked i'd love to go to the

movies

so they did afterward they walked down

the street together

that was wonderful said hannah but i'm

hungry now

okay said the gorilla we'll eat

what he's eating a banana that's what

they eat

time for home asked the gorilla hannah

nodded

a bit sleeply they danced on the lawn

and hannah had never been so happy you

better go in now hannah said the gorilla

i'll see you tomorrow here you read

something

see you tomorrow really asked hannah the

gorilla nodded and smiled

the next morning hannah woke up and saw

the toy gorilla she smiled

hannah rushed downstairs to tell her

father father what happened

on a happy birthday love he said

do you want to go to the zoo hannah

looked at him

she was very happy that's good reading

that's a nice story isn't it

gee that was such a good story and see i

didn't even scratch

and i feel much better too oh you've

been very good kino

i know it must be hard not to be able to

scratch may i take off these silly socks

now

well why don't you wait a little longer
