with some cool stories for today's story

time

first james mcdaniel reads the story of

a young bear who learns to live on his

own

he stood on his hind legs let out an

angry

hungry tired roar

and jump through the air onto it

then jamina likes pretending she's a

hunter

but one day

[Music]

jamina looked up vultures hung high in

the heavy noon heat

and all around she could sense danger

never go alone into the bush her parents

had warned

and our last story is about a bear and a

boy named eddie

now what's for dessert

said the bear let me see

oh please don't let it be me

[Music]

oh boy what am i gonna do this is a big

pain and i don't

like it oh hi quinoa hi kino oh

hi hi hi and hi what's the matter kino

you look like something bad happened

well it did or it's about to happen

what is it my mom told me she's not

gonna drive me to school anymore

well what's wrong with that eight blocks

lucy

that's what's wrong eight long long

blocks

eight gigantic blocks

but you're seven years old kino you're

ready for it

i don't know the walk is very long

eight huge humongous blocks hey but but

keno you're in great shape

you you play soccer all the time you

have to run further than that when you

play

hmm i'll bet you don't have to walk to

school on your own

well you know i haven't been in school

for a little while but i i do have to go

by myself to work

how do you get to school amanda um

well my mom drives me to school

yeah there you go how about you corey

how do you get to school

uh anytime my mom and dad picks me up

um it just takes me to school your mom

and dad

well walking to school is a good thing

keno

it means your parents trust you and that

they know you can handle it

i don't know i kind of liked it when my

mom drove me to school

so well i'm a little bit worried

oh are you worried because your mom

won't be there no

well maybe a little bit

but you'll be with all your friends and

you'll get used to it before you know it

you'll see

and you may even enjoy it mm-hmm i don't

know

well i got an idea maybe a good book

would make you feel better

wow okay oh i've got just the one

oh great here it is it's an adventure

story

about real bears okay

let's read bear by john schoner okay

he woke in the cold rain and rolled onto

the warm spot where his mother

slept her scent was weak

and the spot was cold he sat straight up

and he took a deep whiff

she was gone

he could smell the trees and the grass

and the river and the mountains

there was no fresh smell of mother

he whimpered as he smelled harder

and harder but he couldn't find his

mother

he ran up and down the trails they used

but there was no sign of her

all his life mother had been near him

finding food and protecting him

now she was gone

all afternoon he searched and got very

hungry

he stopped to nibble at some berries but

hmm

they were green and sour when he tried

to dig up some bulbs

a lemon bit him right on the nose

it hurt so much that he turned and he

ran down the hillside

[Music]

he found a trail deep in the moss of the

spruce forest

and he followed it fearfully without his

mother

he had never been here before

a mother moose charged from behind some

boulders and chased him away

back into the dark woods he did not know

where he was

alone he curled up and he went to sleep

the next morning he found another trail

and followed it

he snuffled and whimpered and walked for

days over

mountains and snow fields and valleys of

ash where nothing grew

and there was nothing to eat

then one night he wandered hungrily into

a new forest

where a black shadow growled

and charged towards him he ran without

stopping until he climbed the tree

on top of a steep sandy slope the big

shadow

circled and growled and clawed

for a long time but finally it left

he whimpered until he fell asleep

hugging

the coal tree

when morning came he was hungrier than

ever

and thirsty but way down at the bottom

of the moraine

he could see a stream flowing

he carefully looked around this tree and

he climbed down

and then he ran and slipped and tumbled

down the steep

shifting sands right into the icy water

the water was cold but it smelled good

it was full of fish and he saw their

backs in the shallows

big bright red fat

salmon they swam upstream by

dozens and dozens and filled the pool

with scarlet

he charged after the nearest one but it

got away easily

he ran after all of them until the water

was foamy

and he was tired but he couldn't catch

even

one he put his face underwater

and tried to sneak up he sneaked faster

and faster until he was like a moving

way

and all he got was hungrier

the sun was high in the sky when he

climbed a rock in the middle of the

stream

and he saw one last fish

he stood on his hind legs let out an

angry

hungry tired roar

and jump through the air onto it

yes now he knew how to fish

for weeks more a fish came upstream and

he caught as many as he wanted

he grew bigger and stronger and his roar

got

deeper and deeper as he grew

he chased seagulls and even eagles from

his pool

and when the great dark shadow came to

steal his fish

he stood up on his hind legs and let out

his deepest

the old bear ran away and he never came

back when the salmon stopped coming

he ate ripe berries that covered the

hillsides

he had long forgotten his mother but he

was bigger

and fatter and fiercer than ever

and ready for winter and anything

else

the end whoa

that was pretty scary i didn't know what

was gonna happen

next especially when the bear wakes up

and the mom's gone

now what did the bear have to learn

when his mother left he had to get

bigger and stronger and

eat all kinds of fish

what do you think amanda what did the

bear learn when his mother left

well she learned how to how to fish

salmon very good yeah

can you think of anything you learned

how to eat berries

yeah right at the right time which is

important right

yeah what happened when he ate the

berries for the first time

they're sour you ever had any sour

berries

i have been what does it make your face

do

really sour like a lemon right a lemon

sour

i have a question why did the mom have

to leave

and maybe it was because the mama bear

thought that the baby bear was ready to

grow up

and become a big bear and live on its

own

what do you think do you think it was

time for him to live on his own

yeah didn't the mom care what happened

oh i'm sure she did kino but

that's the way mother bears are

mother bears have to leave so their baby

bears will become

big bears but why because that's one of

the ways that bears grow

by learning things by themselves do you

remember

when the bear learned to catch fish

oh yeah yeah but all i know is

i'm glad i don't have to go through what

the bear had to go through

i only have to walk eight blocks and

you're ready for it too

just like the bear hmm no i don't know

about that

what i do know is i'm ready for another

book

oh well how about this one it's an

adventure story from

africa okay yeah let's read it

it's the hunter by paul garrity

let's see what this is about

in the early morning jamina went with

her grandfather to collect

honey they followed the honey bird far

into the bush

i i want to see elephants cry gemina

grandfather

do you think we will you'll be lucky if

you do

said the old man we don't see many now

not since the hunters came hunters

jamina's eyes lit up i'm going to be a

hunter

jamina played hunter she shot the mighty

elephant

she tracked a rhino deep into the forest

she stalked the pride of lions then

she turned back to look for a

grandfather but

she had wandered too far into the bush

and the old man and the honey bird

were nowhere to be seen

she called out but there was only

silence

[Music]

then far away on the wind jamina heard a

sound

a sad and desperate cry that chugged at

her heart

she held her breath and she listened

jamina looked up vultures hung high in

the heavy noon heat

and all around she could sense danger

never go alone into the bush her parents

but the sound was so mournful she

couldn't help but follow

farther and farther she went

until she came to a clearing there she

found a tiny elephant

trying in vain to wake his mother

the hunters had been there and like

jamina he was lost and afraid

don't cry little one she whispered

jamina tilted her head to listen perhaps

the rest of the herd was nearby

but all she could hear was the endless

rasping of

insects in the heat she knew the baby

would not survive alone

she could try to lead him home with her

and perhaps they would find his family

on the way

but the baby was frightened i

am not a hunter she said softly

for a long time she spoke to the

elephant until he grew calm

and nuzzled her with his trunk

jamina stood up and she walked a few

steps

the baby followed tottering weakly in

the blazing heat

then rain came and cooled by the water

the elephant found strength to go

on at times they slipped and struggled

but they kept on walking right through

the storm

as the skies cleared the baby grew

excited and for a moment

jamina thought she could hear elephants

but when she stopped to listen

there was only the whispering of the

wind in the grass

for a long time the elephant would not

move then sadly

and silently he walked on

if you are lost her grandfather had told

her

follow the afternoon herds they will

lead you to the river

home is on the other side

it was a long time before jamina and the

elephant found the herd of zebra making

its way across the plain

they traveled with the thirsty animals

all through the hot afternoon

as the sun dipped low in the sky they

finally reached the river

but hidden eyes watched them from below

the water

and jamina sensed danger there

it's not safe to cross here little one

she said

we must travel on as jamina turned

she thought she could see elephants on

the horizon

she blinked and strained her eyes

but there were only the acacia trees

shimmering in the hazy heat

jamina and the elephant set off again

but soon the baby began to slow down

just a little further beggimina but he

was too tired to go on

as jamina waited with him she thought of

her mother

if only she could call her soon people

would worry

soon they would come searching

the baby whimpered she stroked him

gently

he had no mother to call

listen jamina hushed the elephant they

could hear voices

my parents she thought

[Music]

but the dark shadows in the distance

were not her parents

pooches she gasped under her breath now

jamina felt she too was one of the

hunted

she prayed that the baby would not

whimper but the elephant

sensed evil and stayed as still as a

stone until the danger passed

darkness fell and the whoops and the

howls of the night creatures echoed in

the distance

do you mean a huddle close to the baby

and then clung to him in fear

as the deep terrifying groan of

something hungry

sounded nearby as she waited to be

hunted

the words of her grandfather came to her

again

if ever you are in danger he said

never lose hope so jamina listened for

her parents

and she closed her eyes and she wished

for them

but instead she saw elephants

her mind was filled with the great herds

of long ago

herds that her grandfather had seen when

he was young

mighty tuskas whose shadows moved like

ghosts across the plains

she could hear their deep and gentle

murmurs close by

when she opened her eyes there were

elephants all around her

as if she called them in her dream

jamina wasn't afraid

take this little one she said and keep

him

safe by the first light of dawn

jamina's mother found her sleeping in

the grass

i was playing hunter and i got lost

jamina said

she stayed very close to her mother all

the way home

and as they reached the village she said

softly to herself

i will never be a hunter

the end oh

phew oh boy

that's a great story yeah it was that

girl was tough

she took care of herself and she took

care of the little elephant

mm-hmm how do you think taking care of

the elephant helped jamina

um made you'll feel good mm-hmm

what do you think keep walking in uh

in a little elephant just found his

family

mm-hmm i i think it helped her because

she felt so sorry for the little

elephant that she couldn't be too afraid

anymore

was jamina afraid no

she wasn't afraid you don't think she

was afraid when she lost her grandfather

at first

would you be afraid if you lost your

grandfather

no i just hear something that i got to

call my name and just

go you just go you're

me brave you wouldn't be afraid if you

lost your grandfather in the woods

all by yourself in the forest with

strange sounds like

this oh

why do you think jamina didn't want to

be a hunter anymore

hmm what happened when she found the

little

elephant what had happened to the big

elephant to his mommy died

yeah and who had heard it um

the huntress so why do you think jamina

wanted to be a hundred first but then

she changed her mind

cause you don't want to be in hunger all

day

right because because she saw what the

hunters had done to

to the her friend the elephant's mother

right

yeah i think i think maybe she felt

sorry for the little elephant

yeah oh kino when do you start going to

school by yourself

oh tomorrow but you know i feel better

about it already

first the book about the bear and now

this one

well i think walking to school isn't too

hard compared to

what happened in those stories no well i

don't think your mom would have you walk

to school if

if she didn't think you were ready and

and just remember to

do what she said you know just like in

the story

when jamina got lost she remembered what

her grandfather had said

if you get lost head for the river

why no my mom told me to stay on

jefferson street all the way

and a bunch of other stuff i'm kind of

looking forward to it now that i heard

these stories

gee thanks a lot james hey it was my

and the next day

hey kino how did walking to school by

yourself go

oh real good i didn't have any problems

i did it all by myself and it was great

oh were you careful oh sure and you know

what

what well i went to the library in my

school

and i asked for a book about a bear and

they gave me this one

and they told me that it's really kind

of funny hmm

a funny bear book would be good since we

had two adventure books yesterday

would you like us to read it oh you bet

that's why i brought it

okay here we go okay it's the bear by

jez

albrow eddie doesn't want to come and

picnic in the woods with mom

i'm scared he said about the bear

the great big bear that lives in there

a bear said mom that's silly dear

we don't get great big bears around here

there's just you and me and your teddy

freddy

now let's all get the picnic ready

we've got lettuce tomatoes and cream

cheese spread

with hard-boiled eggs and crusty brown

bread

there's orange juice cookies some chips

and

oh my i've forgotten to pack the

blueberry pie

i'll dash back and get it she said won't

be long but mom

gasp daddy too late she

had gone he sat on the basket and tried

not to cry then i can smell

food yelled a voice from nearby

it's the bear right eddie where can i

hide

then he opened the basket and clamored

inside

out of the trees stepped a big hungry

bear

licking his lips and sniffing the air

a teddy bear's picnic he bellowed

hooray help

whispered eddie he's coming this way

he cuddled his teddy he huddled and hid

then a great big bare bottom

sat down on the lid

the bear munched and he crunched he

chomped and he chewed and greedily

gobbled up all of the food

now what's for dessert

said the bear let me see

oh please wimper daddy don't let it be

me

don't let him see me don't let him come

help

eddie i'm coming called mom

are you hurt it's the bear cried eddie

he thinks i'm dessert a

bear said mom i told you my dear

your freddy's the only bear around here

no he's not scream daddy behind you

he's there don't be silly said mom

there can't be there just

can't be there isn't

a bear i told you cried eddie

run shouted mom blueberry pie

said the bear i love it

yum yum yum

the end oh you can see that it is a

different kind of story oh yeah and this

one the bear is funny

i saw a bear once in the zoo and it

slept the whole time i was there

it didn't look funny like this one did

it was big

enormous oh well bears can also be

fierce if they're bothered

boy i would have run away so fast if i

were the little boy

hey remember the bear from that other

story yes

well it looked pretty ferocious i think

that's what bears

really look like i think you're right
