with some cool stories for today's story

time

first a book of questions and answers

what is the sun the sun

is a star then

kim delaney reads a book about the

problem with sally's finger

in the afternoon sally's mother took her

to the hospital

to see the doctor he tried chemicals

injections potions and pinchers

and the story of a boy with a secret

i know my father knows too he works a

forklift in one of the brick warehouses

and i showed him the secret place the

day i found it

and finally maestro kino conducts janet

hubert

and the wonderful world singers

what a wonderful world

wow this is really cool look at that

little baby tree

look at all the help we've got

all right let's try the tree

should we try it again guys to see if

it's deep enough yeah

yeah yeah yeah this is really hard work

what are we doing this for again well

trees are very important to us

and that's why we plant them and protect

them

why trees are important because they

help give us clean air for breathing and

shade from the sun

oh yeah well i like my air clean all

right

hey what's the sun made out of anyway oh

what do you think the sun is

well it's a big burning ball that's what

it looks like

it's fire that's right the sun is on

fire the sun

is a star the closest one

to earth our planet and for us it's the

most important

star well why well

because it gives us heat and light

what about the moon how come it doesn't

shine as brightly as the sun does

oh that's because it's not burning like

the sun is hey

why don't we go sit down for a while

okay come on okay sure

how would you like to hear a book

with lots of questions including one

about the sun

okay it's called what is the sun and it

was written by reeve lindbergh with

pictures by stephen lambert

what is the sun

the sun is a star

is the sun near no it is far

[Music]

what does it do it sends light down

to you

like my lamp only higher

more like a big fire

can i see it at night no

you see the moonlight

the moon is a star

not a star just a place

does it smile

[Music]

it looks like a face

sometimes thin sometimes fat

yes the moon is like that

does it shine in the day no

it just fades away

what else does it do it pulls

the tides too

what are the tides

the whole moving sea

with the fish and the whales

yes definitely

where do tides go

up and down ebb and flow

on the beach where i play

up and down night and day

tides go out and go in

like your breath and the wind

what is the wind wind is air

blowing air

[Music]

where does it blow through the world

everywhere the wind

comes and goes it goes

right through your nose

[Laughter]

but that can be cold

when deep winter takes hold

[Music]

is wind ever warm in a summer rainstorm

what is the rain

the rain makes things grow

[Music]

like the flowers and trees and the

rivers that flow

where does it rain on the sea

hill and plain

[Music]

and it rains on my head

not when you're here in bed

and after the rain

then the earth's green again

[Music]

what is the earth it's our home

a big ball

with the sun and the moon and the

raindrops that fall

and the wind and the tides

and the people besides

even children like me

everybody you see

so you'll be here too

yes forever with you

then i think it's all right

i love you good night

the end well that was a good book

i still have lots of questions though oh

that's okay

it's good to ask these questions it

helps you to learn about the earth and

how you can help protect it well another

question i have is that

i'm still not sure why we're here today

because we want to protect nature like

plants and trees

well how about children and babies yes

children and babies too and puppies

puppies too

and moms and dads oh of course and all

animals

them too planting trees is good huh yes

it is

can you think of other ways to help

protect nature

uh ah gee let me think wait a minute

i'm thinking i'm thinking really hard

uh uh oh i know recycle soda cans and

newspapers

that's a good one yeah why don't we go

back to the story place and

see if we can think up some more oh yeah

okay okay

here look through the eyepiece

what you're looking at it's water from

the ocean

by using a microscope or a neat little

scope like this one

you can see all those tiny tiny

creatures

now they're called plankton and some

fish eat them to survive

what do you think cool cool they look

neat yeah

in one little drop of ocean water you

could find some very interesting little

living things

hi everybody hi hi hi guys hi

what are you doing we're looking at

plankton oh flank button whoa hey that's

cool

i'd like to sneak a peek too here take a

look

whoa yike they look like alien monsters

what are they they're plankton little

creatures who live in the

ocean oh gee i hear you were out

planting trees keno

oh yeah well we were helping the earth

and there were lots of other people

helping us too

what else can you do to help the earth

recycle

cans and bottles and newspapers and i'm

trying to come up with some more ideas

and

ideas where are you you know what

we have a couple of books that might

give you the ideas oh yeah

well let's read them sure but first do

you know what a limp it is

hmm i don't do you know

[Music]

how about you all do you know a little

creature that sticks to rocks oh yeah

a limpet is a little creature that lives

on rocks

in ocean water and they're really small

and they have a shell like a snail shell

only

harder can you see them in a drop of

water

no no limpets are small but they're

bigger than a drop of water

you'll see okay sally and the limpet

not long ago on a sunday sally was down

on the beach exploring

when she found a brightly colored bigger

than usual limpet shell

she wanted to take it home but as she

pulled

the limpet made a little squelching

noise

[Music]

and held onto the rock

the harder sally tugged the more tightly

the limpet held on

[Music]

until suddenly sally slipped and fell

with the limpet stuck to her finger

though she pulled with all her might it

just wouldn't come off

[Music]

so she ran over to her dad

he heaved and groaned the limpet made a

little squelching noise

and held on even tighter

so that afternoon sally went home in the

car

with the limpet stuck to her finger

when they got home her dad tried using

his tools

her brother tried offering it cucumbers

and lettuce

[Music]

but that night sally went to bed with

the limpet stuck to her finger

next day was school

all her friends tried to pull the limpet

off her finger

[Music]

mr wobbly man the nature teacher said

that limpets

live for 20 years and stay

all their lives on the same rock

[Music]

in the afternoon sally's mother took her

to the hospital

to see the doctor he tried chemicals

injections potions and pinchers

[Music]

sally was beginning to feel upset

everyone was making too much fuss all

around her

[Music]

so she kicked over the doctor's chair

and ran

[Music]

she ran through the endless corridors

she just wanted to be on her own

[Music]

she ran out of the hospital and through

the town

she didn't stop when she got to the

beach

[Music]

she ran through people's sand castles

she even ran over a fat man

[Music]

she reached the water she jumped in with

all her clothes on

sally landed with a big splash

and then just sat in the water

[Music]

the limpet feeling at home once more

made a little squelching noise

and wiggled off her finger

[Music]

but sally didn't forget what mr wobbly

man the nature teacher had said

very carefully she lifted the limp bit

by the top of its shell

she carried it back across the beach

past the fat man she had walked on

and gently so gently put the limpet back

on the very same rock

where she had found it the day before

then humming to herself she took the

long way home

across the beach

[Music]

the end wow

how did sally help she put the limpet

back where she got it

uh-huh and how did that help it might

have

died if it it didn't get back to water

soon enough

think so or

it could have went on a different

rock and it might have died because it

has to stay on the same rock

exactly she took the limpet right back

to the water where it belonged

and how did sally feel at the end of the

book

good because the olympic was off the

finger and she was happy

right i didn't want a um limp that stuck

on her finger for 20 years

20 years because i left that long that's

right

come on limpet get off of there

she felt really good because she took

the limpet to the limpet's home

where the limpet could be happy and and

how did the limpet decide

or why did it decide to slip off of her

finger

it its home and it

went off because it felt at home and it

was at

nature that's right that's right

back in the water belonged in the water

yeah

did the book give you any ideas about

how you can help

yeah yeah you can't you can um leave

animals where they belong

so they won't die very good yeah instead

of having one get stuck on your finger

that's for sure you can help by leaving

animals in their homes

any animal right right

you know what this book here is also

about letting animals

live in peace in their homes

it's called secret place by eve bunting

in the heart of the city where i live

there's a secret place

close by is a freeway where cars and

trucks boom

and a railroad track with freight trains

that shunt

and grunt there are warehouses with

windows blinded by dust and names paint

scrawled

on their brick walls

the lines on the telephone and electric

poles web the sky

smokestacks blow clouds to dim the sun

but in the heart of the city where i

live

low down hidden a river runs

the water is dark and shallow in its

concrete bed

bushes and tangled weeds cling to the

slopes of the concrete walls

hardly anyone knows the river is here

hardly anyone cares

mrs aaron knows and mr ramirez

and peter and janet who are married i

know

my father knows too he works a forklift

in one of the brick warehouses

and i showed him the secret place the

day i found it

the white egret found it too i watched

the bird float down

its legs thin and reaching its head

plumes fanned

the green winged heel nose the

buffleheads that come to waterskin know

and the circling mallards know i've seen

them here before

peter says last year there was a mallard

nest lined with feathers

from the mother's breast later there

were ducklings

[Music]

they'll nest here again peter says i

jump up and down

ducklings perfect mrs aaron and mr

ramirez

and janet and peter bring binoculars

they let me look through them

the sparrows lined up on the barbed wire

fence seemed

big as mud hens peter tells me the names

of the birds

he is like a bird himself with hair the

color of a cinnamon teal

in the heart of the city where i live

there's always noise

the growl of traffic

the snort of trains the beep beep of a

backing truck

the secret place has its own noise

cackle of coots a quack of teals

the rah-rah of the mallards that ring

the sky

peter and janet brought me here one

night we stood

while behind us the city jangled

the secret place was at peace the birds

had nested

the river ran slow as syrup

tucked together the ducks slept

coyote came to lap the shattered water

possum carried her children to drink

how did they find this place i asked

they've always been here janet said

before the city grew there was

wilderness

this is all that's left wild things need

quiet

we do too

[Music]

the phone wires rocked the moon in their

cradle of lines

the stars rested bright on the telephone

poles

i want to tell everyone what's here i

said

be careful peter said some people might

want to take the secret place

and change it i'd never want that to

happen i said

i told my father but he is good with

secrets i'll be careful who else i tell

i will only say that close to a freeway

in a railroad track and tall smoking

chimneys

in the heart of the city where i live

there is a secret place

[Music]

if you can find it there may be

ducklings

[Music]

the end

how did the boy help he wouldn't tell

anybody about

the um ducklings unless he probably

knew them really well so they would keep

the secret

and he would barely tell where they were

that's right the boy helped by not

bothering the birds

and by not telling the secret and what

was the secret

the secret was a special place

where the ducks played their eggs and

had ducklings yeah the secret was that

the ducks were living there

and what could have happened if the

secret got out

maybe someone would have come and

changed the place so that the ducks

couldn't live there anymore

could i see that book for a minute kim

you know

keno earlier you were asking me why

trees are important

and this is a good example

now where do you think animals would

rather live

here or

here

so they could lay their eggs oh that's

why we were planting trees

why do you think well because trees make

cities more beautiful

and they also clean up the air

so today you did something good you

planted a tree

yeah hey hey guys let's sing a song

about

about trees and animals and people and

bugs

and limpets and everything in the world

well what are you

saying well let's sing that song that we

were singing the other day

come on while keno and his friends get

ready

i have a couple of books to recommend

the first one

is where the forest meets the sea it has

beautiful pictures of a boy who walks

through a forest of very

old trees he wonders how long the trees

will be alive

and this one is called earth dance

and it's a poem that asks you to imagine

that you are the earth

okay we're gonna put on a show and it's

gonna be good

that's great well we're ready to listen

boy it's a great looking stage

right
