07x08 - Fool's Gold

[groovy music]

- [Sam] Get ready for a "Game Changer"!

Tonight's guests, his hugs
make me go totally insane,

it's Mike Trapp!

That is wild.

Buzzer Pizza's number one
customer, Rekha Shankar!

[Sam and Mike laughing]

And ready or Gastronaut,
it's Jordan Myrick!

- Boi-yoi-yoi-yoi-yoing!

[Sam laughs]

- And your host, me. I've
been here the whole time.

This is "Game Changer",

the only show where the
game changes every show.

I am your host, Sam Reich.

I am joined today by these
three lovely contestants.

Now, you all understand
how the game works.

- No.
- Not at all.

- I said yes, 'cause it's my
first time and I'm nervous.

- That's right, our players have no idea

what game it is they're about to play.

The only way to learn is by playing,

the only way to win is by learning,

and the only way to begin is by beginning.

So without further ado, let's
begin, with another episode.

Then another, then another.

Backing myself further
and further into a corner

where it's harder and
harder to be original.

- I've noticed that.

- Your stuff has been suffering.

- Players, I'm spent.

Would you produce this episode for me?

- [Announcer] First to the stage is Paul,

with a pitch that's no copy, all paste.

- Trapp, Rekha, Jordan,
I stand before you today

a humble man with big dreams.

I have a question.

What do you remember and cherish

the most from your childhood?

Allow me to answer for you.

[Sam laughs]

I bet it's when we used
to cover our hands in glue

and then peel it off.

Well, my pitch today is
called Project Snake Skin.

If you fund my idea, two
amazing helpers, Nico and Ash,

are going to cover my entire body in glue

and then remove it in
long, satisfying strips.

I am asking for a modest sum of $550

to cover the cost of materials
and the full body wax

that I got in preparation for this.

Producers, what do you say?

Peel or no peel?

- Now players, or should I say producers,

I have made no secret over the years

as to how Dropout marketing works.

We produce content, and
then we market that content,

using social video to do so.

The producer to fund the ideas

with the most social video
views wins the episode.

Of course, we won't know who that is

until a month after this episode airs

and all the clips have been posted.

- Oh, interesting.
- You each have $10,000.

What do you think of Paul's pitch?

- I love Paul's pitch.

[Sam laughs]

Anyone who enjoys looking
at a shirtless Paul-

- Huge demo.

- How much nudity will there be?

I'm looking for no p*nis.
Legs definitely, maybe butt.

- Jordan, I'm with you.

I'm ready to go down
to my briefs for this.

- I think we could attract a
lot of people that are like,

you're k*lling yourself.
- Yeah.

- You're putting glue all over your body.

- What is seeping into your skin?

- Hate views from-
- [Sam] Wow. Wow.

- Oh, so rage bait.

- People are really going
to debate in the comments

whether I'm harming myself in some way.

- Controversy does mean engagement.

- That's how I live.

- You call this Project Snake Skin.

I think what you want is a
peel of one solid, slimy-

- Could you get it in one piece?

- I don't think he could do it.

- I'm going to be wearing underwear,

so I can't break the line there.

But maybe I could do one full top piece

and two for the bottom-
- Like a sweater and pants.

- People want the one big-
- They do want it.

- That's what I'm hoping to
achieve today, with your help.

- If any one of you
decides to fund this video,

Paul will go offstage.

We will record the gluing up.

Then he'll come back onto the stage,

and we'll watch you peel it off of him.

- You brought up so many good points,

but I also want to bring up 90s nostalgia.

- Do people not do the glue thing anymore?

- I was born in 1993,
and I didn't do this.

[all gasp]
- Gasp!

- But do you still see the appeal

in such a feat of strength?
- [in unison] The a-peel!

- I think I'm going to
go ahead and say I'm out.

[Sam gasps]
- Oh my.

- [Sam] Jordan is out.
- That's really huge.

- I love you, Paul.

- [Sam] Would either of
you like to make Paul

an offer of his requested $550?

- How do you feel about 100?

- 100 doesn't even cover the
wax that I already paid for.

[Mike and Rehka laughing]

- How much did the wax cost?

- I don't want to say that.
[Sam and contestants laugh]

- I do think this appeals
to me on an emotional level.

It appeals to me on an intellectual level.

- Let's go, Trapp. I
know you want to say yes.

- Paul, I'm in. I believe in you.

- I knew from the very start

that you were the one I wanted to go with.

- Great.
- Let's lock it in.

- In that case, Paul, your
idea has been greenlit.

- Thank you.
- [Sam] Nico and Ash,

please go ahead and cover Paul in glue!

- Let's go!
- Let's go!

It's peeling time, you
guys! Thank you, producers.

- Literally, no problem.

[Mike and Rehka laughing]

- [Paul] Oh my god.

You're artists.

That's a pretty good, solid layer.

I feel good about this.

- Trapp, that is $550 away from you,

bringing you to $9,450.

Congratulations on
being our first producer

to take a chance on an idea.

- If no one else funds
anything, I've won by default.

- Hey, listen, quantity is a part of this.

- Oh, because they all add up.

- They all add up.

- Better bring out another
muscular q*eer man.

- Would you settle for
a muscular q*eer woman?

- Yes.
- Yes.

- [Announcer] Next, Anna has an idea

that's a kind jester
toward total strangers.

- Hear ye, hear ye!

Producers, haveth you ever
seen those videos of the gents

rolling around the basketball
hoop in town square

for strangers to shooteth
upon a free throw?

They're like, "Stranger, take the ball!"

And then the strangers
sort of sh**t the ball,

and if they make it, it's like, woo!

And even if they don't make
it, they're like, "Good job!"

- I've seen those videos, yes.

- Hugely viral!

Lo, our video will present
strangers with a throne

upon which to reign.
[bell jingling]

My bell fell off.

- I'm out! I'm out!

- Oh, and that's fair!
- The bells-

- Oh!

- I'm in!
[Rehka laughs]

- We got him back, boys! We got him back!

I will assemble a crew of Dropout members

to go into the world and find our kings,

record it, and boom, royal virality.

So for props, costumes, and a
really cool throne and stuff,

I am seeking a budget of $1,800.

Will you join me in giving people

the pleasure of being king for a day?

- I feel like with
those basketball videos,

you're getting an element of competition.

- The goal of the basketball videos

is not to make the basket.
- Okay.

- It's breaking the pattern
of everyday monotony.

- The average person on
the street is very scared.

- But perhaps it's a gorgeous throne.

- Sure.

- And remember when "Game
of Thrones" was so big,

and everyone wanted to sit in that chair?

- [Rehka] Right.
- That's true.

- So people will see it, be enticed.

Real excited. Come on, try it!

And then all of a sudden,
you're being fed grapes.

- Something that's missing for me,

kind of piggybacking
off my colleague Jordan,

is the underdog story.

I think what's interesting
about these videos

that I would like, for the record,

to say I've never seen or heard of-

- That does hinder me
ultimately in the longterm.

[Rehka laughing]

- And how many Dropout cast members?

- Holy moly.
- Say your three favorite,

and that's who will be in it with you.

- What about these three
amazing Dropout cast members

in front of me?
- I won't bring the numbers.

- Okay!
[all laughing]

- How do you move around a throne

that is big enough and sturdy enough-

- I'm picturing sort of a dolly situation.

- Okay, can I pitch on that pitch?

- Absolutely.
- This should be a parade.

- Okay!

Because I love a parade.

- You run up to them, you say, "Quick!"

Something of that nature.
- Scary!

- You hop on the dolly.

It's some kind of throne or whatever.

- Love.

- You get pulled like 15 feet,
you wave, everybody claps.

I will go in.

- Okay.

- Thank you.
- Okay.

- I'm out.

- And why?

- I think this will scare most people.

I think people will not
want to sit in the chair.

- So far, $1,500 offer from Jordan.

- I think it's great, and I think you

have gone very viral many times before.

You yourself have virality.
- [Sam] Wow.

- So I think I'm ready
to attach myself to you.

- Thank you. Wow, I
didn't even bring that up.

- That's a $1,500 offer.

Do you want to counter Jordan? Anna?

- If anything, I'm scrappy and crafty,

and I do think we can make it work.

- Anna's idea has been greenlit
for $1,500 by Jordan Myrick.

- Congratulations.
- Jordan, you're on the board.

That's $1,500 away from you.

- Thank you.

- It's a pleasure doing business.

This is mine!
[Sam laughs]

Bye!
- Bye!

- [Rehka] Thank you!
- [Jordan] Good job!

- We seek a king for the day!

- We are waiting for a king!

- A benevolent ruler!
- No princes!

- Please, come. King for
a day, be king for a day!

- Would any of you like to be king?

We're ungoverned!

King, king! Little king!
- King, no? King, no?

- Please!
- Uh-oh. Competition, guys.

- Oh my god.
- Want to ride with me?

- You want to ride with
us? You can be king!

- Hop on for one second!
[peasants cheering]

What is your name, sir?

- My name is Marha.

- Marha!
- All hail King Marha!

Take the king's hand!

- Kiss the king's hand, please. Thank you.

[peasants screaming]
- Off with her head!

- Would you like to be king

while you get to your appointment?

- All hail Queen Lisa!
- Queen Lisa!

- Bow to your peaceful queen!

- Whatever you guys are
doing, it looks like fun.

- All hail-
- King Too Fresh!

It is your job to knight someone.

- I demand you to slay
this guy right here!

- Slay the cameraman!
- My liege!

- The king has ordered m*rder!

- King for a day!
- Would you like to be a king?

- Yes.
[peasants cheering]

- A child rules this
kingdom, as it should be!

- What do you want as king?

- Food!
[peasants cheering]

- The king feasts!
[Jeremy chortling]

- Queen Debbie!

Bow to the queen right now!

- Producers, it's time for our next pitch.

- [Announcer] Next to the stage is Katie,

whose pitch is a real roll of the dice.

[Jordan giggling]

- [Sam] Oh! Oh, wow!

Oh! Oh!

Space work.

And she's going around a second time.

- Is this going to be for a horse?

- I hope this is the whole pitch.

[Jordan giggling]

- Greetings, fair travelers.

D&D has captured the imagination
of the Dropout audience,

and I should know.

I've been in exactly one
"Dimension 20" campaign

and was never invited back.

But that all changes today.

My pitch, Katie DMs a
"Dimension 20" campaign.

My players, the best DMs in the world,

all forced to sit through
whatever bullshit I come up with.

Perhaps we're on a bus, or in an Uber.

Haven't put much thought into it.

Whatever it ends up being,

the results are sure to be upsetting

not just to D&D fans, but
specifically to Brennan.

And what does the internet love
more than an upset Brennan?

I am seeking a budget of $3,000.

- And it's going to be one
full episode of "Dimension 20"?

- That I DM, knowing nothing.
[Sam laughs]

- Can I go back to your
idea of it being on a bus?

- Yes.

- I think that's terrific.
- Thank you.

- Nowhere to go. I'm in.

[Sam and crew laughing]

I think people will watch
this because they love to see

a twist on D20.
- Yes.

- They would love to see these
heavy hitters at the table.

- Yes.
- Doing your weird bus stuff.

- Right, my bus stuff.
- It could be Uber. I'm open.

- I'm thinking bus.
- Yeah!

- I'm thinking we go bus.
- Yeah. You think school bus?

You think city bus?
- I think city bus,

and I think that I dress sort
of like this for the campaign

but it has nothing to do with it.

- Insane.

- Can I go ahead and say that I'm in?

Speaking from personal experience,

any clip with Brennan will go viral.

- Yes.

- So it kind of doesn't
matter what you do.

[Mike and Sam laughing]

- I love that.

- I will give you $3,500.

I'll give you 500 extra dollars.

- How much did I ask for?

- You asked for $3,000.

- And how much did you say?

- I said 35. I'll give you a little-

- I'm not a numbers person.

- I will give you $2,500.
- [Katie] Interesting.

- That is less than-
- That's less!

- Don't tell her that!
- That's less!

- She just said she's
not a numbers person!

- Trapp!
- $3,500, and I will be in it.

- I can give you $4,000,

and I can also get Rekha to be in it.

- No, you can't.
- No, I can.

- No, you can't.

- Rekha's one of my best
friends in the entire world.

- You literally can't.

You literally can't.
- I can.

- I wanted it to be DM specific
because I'm going to be-

- So you don't want me in it.
- [Jordan] I don't want Rekha.

- $3,500, and I swear
Rekha won't be in it.

- I will give you $3,500

with the promise I will not be in it.

- And I'll give you that exact same thing.

- Two hundred hundred dollars.

- Shut up, Trapp!

[contestants laughing]

- [Sam] Katie-
- I'll slap you! Yeah?

- Katie, the choice is
yours. Rekha or Jordan.

- Rekha. I'm going Rekha. Sorry, Jordan.

- Wow, you didn't even look at me.

- I indicated early interest.

- And I came in here thinking

I would like to work with Rekha on this.

I'm so sorry.
- This is greenlit!

And that is $3,500 away from Rekha.

Rekha and Katie are in business
together! Congratulations!

[dramatic music]
[bus honking]

- Hello, everyone, and welcome
to another thrilling season

of "Dimension 20: On a Bus".
- On a bus?

- I am your humble dragon
master, Katie Marovitch,

and with me, as always, are my people.

Say hi, my people.

- [Players] Hi, my people.

- You already know them.
You already love them.

- Hey. Mark here.
- I love you, Mark.

And let me set the scene.

- [Aabria] Oh my god!
- [Brennan] Christ.

I know Rick had nothing to do with that.

- So, I guess it's time for a battle.

- With who?

- A battle.
- What do you mean?

- Based on what?
- Is the bus under attack?

- Do you want to be lint?
- Oh.

- Do you want to be a little army man?

Do you want to be this little hat?

Or do you want to be a blue M&M?

- I'll be hat.
- And there you are!

- There's food in this.

- And then I have dice for you.

- [Aabria] Just sixes.

I ate my M&M.

- Air.

[contestants laughing]

I ask you to ponder that.

- Where's the air? In context
of what? What's it doing?

How does it connect to us
and our emotional journey?

Do we experience the air? Who are we?

Some of us are lint!

- As we make our way into
Los Angeles, California.

- As a piece of lint, do I
have a natural affinity for

the landscape of Los Angeles?
- [Aabria] You're really-

- You are thinking so hard.
- I'm sorry. I'm sorry.

- You're trying to
believe in this so hard.

- We are actually on a bus.

Our mission is to get from
North Hollywood to LAX.

- This is a longer season, right?

- You're going to roll your
dice. We have a lot of dice.

- They're not the right ones.

- What are you rolling for?

- You go first. Can you roll for me?

- Just roll 1d6?
- Roll what?

- He's rolling initiative!
- You just said he goes first!

You don't need initiative
if he's going first!

- Five.

- Okay, so actually, you needed a six,

a perfect six, in order to attack.

- What are we fighting!

- Don't know what it is.

Okay, I got a two.

- You needed a six, so-

- What is the dice system of the game?

- Six.
- Six!

- So what does six do?

- That's excellent. You destroyed the bus.

- So in the first episode
of "Dimension 20: On a Bus",

we destroy the bus in
the first 10 minutes?

- The bus is gone. The bus is gone.

- Are we abandoned on the
freeway now without a bus?

- Matt can't help himself but help you

narrate this into making sense.

awesome responsibility.

You are the horizontal and the vertical.

You are the environment and all events.

Can you make me understand how a hat

did something that was rolling

I can't imagine what happened.

- Yeah, and we'll get into that next week.

- No.
- Why? No!

- Well, that's everything.

We'll see you next time

on another exciting episode
of "Dimension 20: On A Bus".

- There's no bus anymore!

- We're going to now begin
the "Adventuring Party".

- No! No! No!
- I'll f*cking k*ll myself.

- Let's do it right now.
- [Aabria] No!

[relaxing elevator music]

- Producers, it's time
for your next pitch.

- [Announcer] Next up,
Erika makes the producers

a cutting edge proposal.

- Hello, producers. I'm many things.

A voiceover artist, a TTRPGer.

I'm also one thing that you
perhaps do not know about.

A real estate mogul.

And I am about to offer you

my side shave real estate.

- Oh!
- Yeah, it's very famous.

- Should you fund this idea,

my side shave artist here Ed Fonseca-

- Hello.
- ...is ready to shave

whatever you may want into
my head, here and now.

My only limits are your imagination.

For Ed's fee, as well as
my likely embarrassment,

I am seeking a budget of just $500.

- Shaved side of the head is
huge to the q*eer community,

so I think my community
might be seeing that

a little bit more than the
community of these two.

- I have a question for
Ed, if I may address you.

- Of course.
- Don't talk to Ed!

Do not look Ed in the eye!
- Sorry, sorry, sorry!

Ed, are you able to get
as detailed as a face?

- Can you shave a QR code in there?

- Those are a little bit more difficult.

- Too crazy, okay.
- He can do a face.

How detailed the face might be?

- [Rehka] Okay.
- What's your specialty?

- I met Ed because I wanted tentacles

shaved into the side of my head.

We have done a maze, a bunch of dice.

- I'm in, because I have a vision.

- What's your vision?

- I'm not telling everyone here-

- Lookie here!

- I've said yes to less.

- Let me whisper it. Can you come to me?

- Okay. Yeah.

- Everybody muff your ears.

- Ed, do you have a favorite
design you've ever done?

- Mostly freestyle.
- Cool.

- I've been cutting 35 years.
- [Rehka] Yeah.

- And a rap artist that was
getting a lot of designs,

he put one of mine on his album.

- Wow!

- I've just been doing it ever since.

- That's actually pretty good, so.

- Jordan and Erika have
a handshake agreement.

- I will do whatever Jordan
said for a dollar more.

- Okay, I'll do one more dollar than that.

- Another dollar atop that.

- Great. One more from me.

- We are at $504.

- One more dollar!

- And then I'll do one on top of that.

- All right, that's fine.

- In that case, this
goes to Jordan for $506.

- [Jordan] All right!

- Jordan, do we get to hear what this is?

- No, you don't.

- Wow! It's going to be a surprise!

- That's cool.
- I consented.

- I'm so excited. Well,
congratulations, Jordan.

Congratulations, Erika.

We will see you once the shave is done.

- [Erika] Oh my gosh.

Okay.
[razor buzzing]

Oh my god. Jordan!

- If I could please have the next pitch.

- [Announcer] Next up
is Sephie with a pitch

that's sure to rev your engines.

- Hello. Welcome to me.

[Jordan and Sam laughing]

- Great start.

- You know what Dropout's
audience needs most

is a good extra helping of horny.

My pitch to you is a
sexy, 90s style car wash

with your favorite Dropout
stars like Ify, Grant,

a bunch of other people.

I have consenting forms from every person

that I just mentioned and
a bunch of other people

whose names I can't read 'cause they're-

- You say you have a lot of
signatures. How many people-

- 20.
[Rekha gasps]

- 20?
- 20 sudsy sluts?

- 20 sudsy sluts that have
all consented to this.

- Down by the seashore.

- Not because I threatened
their jobs at all.

- How much are you asking for?

- $4,200.
- What!

- We will be renting a muscle car.

- What!
- Oh.

- We can't just do a Honda?
- You think this comes cheap?

Do you think this is cheap?
- No, that's nice.

- Last time we were at a
party, you had me touch that,

and it felt very expensive.
- It was.

- Is there anyone else you plan on asking?

- Jordan wants to be in it.
- I'm just wondering!

[Sam laughs]

- What we are funding is
a video of the car wash.

- Yes.

- What is your vision for this video?

- Music video? Is it a-
- What's the vibe here?

- It is a music video with
royalty-free music, probably,

where everyone starts
washing a muscle car,

scantily clad in things like, you know,

bikini tops, denim panties.

- It seems a little pricey to me,

especially because a car wash, in theory,

should generate money, right?

- Very business-minded.

- I think what this is missing for me

is the competition element to it.

Like, two teams of sexy car washes.

- Can I pitch on that pitch?
- Please.

- It could be like,
like if you want team A,

comment if you want team B.
- Wow.

- That is actually an incredible idea.

- [Trapp] Then it's spurring engagement.

- [Jordan] It's interactive.

- If you do that, I could give you $3,600.

I will even offer myself

in the most amount of clothes possible.

- Just Rekha, fully clothed, soaking wet.

- [Rekha] Absolutely.

- Could I go in with you on this?

- Sure. A joint proposal.
- And we do 50/50.

- Can I do $3,600 and one dollar?

- I will k*ll you.

- This right now stands
with the two of you

offering to go in
together, Rekha and Jordan.

- You want to do 37 split?

- I would do 37 split with you.

- We'll do 37 split.

- Or Mike Trapp-

- Who hasn't offered himself,
fully clothed or otherwise,

to the project.
- No.

- I'm offering the incredible idea

of making it a competition.

- Which we stole!

- Thank you. I'm going
with these two, thank you.

- Aw!
- That's so sweet.

- This pitch is being split
between Rekha and Jordan.

- Thank you for the idea.
I'm sorry we stole it.

But that's business, baby.
- [Matt] That's okay.

- That's business.

- And it's greenlit!
Sephie, congratulations!

- Bye!

- I can't stop bidding! I'm addicted!

- And so that's $1,850 from each of you.

- I love the idea of comment,
like. I think that's smart.

- I think it could be fun.

- This is the sexy car wash.

Like if you think team one is the sexiest.

Comment if you think
team two is the sexiest.

- Grant, that was not oddly satisfying.

- It's not, you're absolutely
right. Thank you very much!

- I started out out,

and I'm somehow less in than I was before.

- Trapp, I'm offering you
the opportunity to create

the most oddly satisfying

Body ASMR is how me and
millions of other people

get to sleep every night.

I am offering you the chance to pair me up

with a doctor of chiropractic medicine,

the most sensitive microphone technology

in Hollywood, California, and my back.

Now, if you're unfamiliar
with the art form,

you should know that a lot
of these chiropractors,

god bless them, they record
their videos with a USB mic,

or god forbid, an iPhone.

But we in show business
know that it can be better.

It can be louder. It can
be more oddly satisfying.

Producers, I'm asking for
$1,200 for this video.

With your help, I believe that I can

bring crack to the whole world.

- An epidemic, if you will.

- You mentioned that these
videos are used to fall asleep,

but in the same breath mentioned

how loud you would like it to be.

- You crack your back?
- Yes.

- Is it more or less satisfying
depending on how loud it is?

- Maybe what you're talking about,

and Mingge, feel free to correct me,

is sort of like a fidelity of sound.

It's like you want to hear all
those semitones in between.

- Really nice.

- Something a little bit more intricate.

- [Jordan] Oh, I love the swans.

- He's making these by hand out of clay.

- I love this.

- He's putting the time and attention

that he put into his
craft into his crafts.

- Yeah.
- First off,

those farewell videos get
tens of millions of views.

If we title a YouTube video,

"This Is Why I'm Leaving Dropout,"

immediately we're going to
get people to click through.

I am seeking a budget of...

Sam, there's a number on the screen,

and I'm going to do something
that's a little off book.

- Okay.
- I'm seeking $20,000.

[Sam laughing]
[Vic giggling]

- I'm curious how you think

- Hold on. I'm seeking $20,000.

I'm not great at math,

but I know these numbers don't add up.

Sam, I'm coming to you humbly, asking you,

- Her leg fell off.

- Fund it! Fund it!

and ends up an episode of "Chef's Table".

- Brennan sort of on a table,

and we just see a hand
pushing up off a table,

and then it fades to black.

- All right, who has something to offer me

in exchange for $20,000?

- I will put up videos that corroborate

that Brennan has left Dropout.
- Interesting.

- Cryptic posts.

- A selfie with Brennan
saying, "Gonna miss this guy."

- Sponsored ads for Brennan's shoes.

- I will do that ad on my podcast.

- Now we're talking.
- How does this work, Sam?

Are we equal partners in this?

- Are we all so committed to this-

- Yeah.
- ...that we are willing

to all go in together-
- Yeah.

- ...with our respective promises-

- Yeah.
- Knowing that if we do that

and make this happen, it will mean that

the resulting points are a complete wash?

- Yes.
- Yeah.

- I think that's beautiful.

- I love that. I think that's
the perfect way to end.

- I think that that is art.

- Trapp, it's up to you. You
still have the most money.

- I also think this video should get made.

- In that case, we're all
going into business together
