with some cool stories for today's story

time

first find out why the little mouse is

so worried about keeping the strawberry

the bear will drop through the forest on

his

big hungry feet and

sniff sniff sniff find the strawberry

then michael horse reads us a story

about how a smart little tortoise got

her

shell well said a chi tree

i've heard that miami's got a bigger

drum

what sabo oh yes

it's so big that he can climb right

inside of it

and not one bit of him sticks out ah

well i can climb right inside mine said

oh sable

just watch and mama bear and her baby

bear were happily living in the

mountains

until one day a huge grizzly

big hairy one lumbered down over the

deadfall

the muscles of his great flanks rippling

with a sudden roar

big hairy one came galloping after

lightfoot fast as a racehorse

life would scramble away he could feel

everyone's breath

oh no this fern is what i'm trying to

oh i'm making a book of photographs of

the plants and animals in this

neighborhood

oh yeah there are some pretty cool

animals around here

i seen a squirrel a possum one herman

bird

and a couple of frogs there are some

cool animal

books too we've read lots of them on

story time

hey we should make an animal day yeah

let's make today

animal day we can read animal books eat

animal crackers make animal sounds

eat like animals run like animals smell

like animals

smell like animals i don't know about

that

steady now ah that's it

oh this is gonna be a great picture well

maybe not smell like animals hey why

don't we go sit on that bench and read a

book before we leave

okay let's do it okay come on

is it an animal book yes it's

an animal book with pretend animals

oh well maybe i could read it yeah let's

have kino read it okay

all right

okay here we go the little mouse

the red ripe strawberry and the big

hungry bear

hello little mouse what are you doing

oh i see are you going to pick that

red ripe strawberry

but little mouse haven't you heard about

the big

hungry bear

oh how that bear love loves red ripe

strawberries

[Music]

the big hungry bear can smell a red ripe

strawberry

a mile away

[Music]

especially one that has just been

picked

the bear will trump through the forest

on his big hungry feet

and sniff sniff sniff

find the strawberry no matter where

it is hidden

or who is guarding it

or how it is disguised

there's only one way in the whole wide

world

to save a red ripe strawberry from the

big hungry bear

cut it in two

share half with me

and we'll both eat it all up

now that's one red ripe strawberry

the big hungry bear will never

get

the end

you know what i really like strawberries

and that one looked especially delicious

mm-hmm

yeah i like the part when the mouse puts

a disguise on the strawberry oh

yes that's a funny part yeah hey let's

keep pretending it's animal day

yeah okay hey hey look at that squirrel

over there

hi mr squirrel hi come on over here

yuck ow yeah

a skunk oh no

ugh oh man that skunk tried to squirt me

i think it missed ugh but it sure stinks

that's rough keno there is a smelly

difference between a skunk and a

squirrel

i'll never forget it either ugh

yeah skunks can really squirt you in

man does this stuff smell bad

i guess this must be my bad luck day i

think that skunk thought i was gonna try

to get him or something

oh brother oh man

pee you man your clothes sink

that's okay keno you can clean them so

nobody'll notice okay

thanks well i think we'd better head

back

and this one i took at the zoo

they're spanky and clean

ooh sparkling clean right sparkling

well let's see i have a photograph of a

tiny frog

and here's a picture of an elk then you

saw my coyote

and oh and i asked michael to bring his

turtle over so i could take its picture

oh and tomorrow i'll bring you a picture

of my lizard lizzy

well i took most of them with my camera

oh look

here's a picture of a squirrel in mrs

morales's dream

oh please don't talk about squirrels

around me today

or skunks ugh they're not my favorite

animals

i like animals oh me too except for

skunks

and today is animal day

hello everyone oh hi michael hi monica

hi monika

oh cool hey you brought your turtle i

want to take a picture of it

yeah this is rocky hi rocky you know

something smells kind of bad i know it

really stinks doesn't it

oh yeah well uh it's my clothes

i got a little too close to a skunk you

see

i tried to clean it off but i guess i

didn't get all of it

are you sure it's not you that stinks

yes sure i'm sure it's just my clothes

well yes the sweet smell of nature

i said i wanted to smell like an animal

for animal day

but this is a bit too much speaking of

animals

do you know how the tortoise got its

shell no

how thank you monica

this is one of monica's books it's an

old tale from west africa

called the leopard's drum retold by

jessica

shuhami

usable the leopard was fierce proud and

boastful

he made a huge drum and he played it

every day

animals came from near and far to see it

[Music]

it was a magnificent drum the best that

they had

ever seen they all wish that it belonged

to them

[Music]

even naomi the sky god wanted it

josebo he said that is a wonderful drum

i should have a drum like that will you

give me your drum

uh no sarusebo

will you lend me your drum uh

no serosable

will you let me try your drum but josebo

said

no you should respect me osebo

i am the sky god

then the army turned and said animals of

the forest

whoever brings me that drum will get a

big reward

and the army disappeared

the next day onini the python

went to get the drum

just looking at your your fine drum

your your huge drum your your

magnificent drum

good day jose bo

the next day a sooner the elephant

went to get the drum

ah looking for me esuno

uh uh oh er no sibo

just admiring your your fine drum your

your huge drum your your magnificent

drama sable

the next day something strange

moves slowly through the forest

animals were puzzled some were

frightened

what is it they whispered whoever can it

be

it was us robot the monkey going to get

the drum

we hoped that joseph wouldn't see him

behind his mask

[Applause]

looking for mias robua no

sable just just looking fine huge

magnificent

last of all a chichari the tortoise

went to ghetto saples drum

you haven't got a chance the other

animal

said not a titchy little

weak creature like you

it was true the tortoise was very small

and in those days her shell was quite

soft

and she had to watch out that careless

animals didn't squash her flat

well i'm going to try any way she said

looking for mia chichori uh not really

osable

i was just looking at this drum uh

don't you think it's a fine magnificent

drum a chicherry

well it's all right i suppose for

a middle-sized kind of drum josebo

ah middle size you ridiculous creature

don't you know this is the biggest the

best drum in the forest

nami's got a bigger drum wow what

now you're inside but you can't get out

and a teacher resealed the drum with a

large cooking pot

now i'm gonna take you to the sky god

slowly attitude pushed the enormous drum

with the heavy leopard inside

all the way to nyami

[Music]

heroes of saber's drum the army and

osabo is inside

well done said nami no one else could

get the drum

and you have taught that boastful

leopard a lesson

let him go now and decide what you would

like as your reward

a chichi looked around all the other

animals were looking jealous

and annoyed she thought for a moment

please naomi she said most of all

i would like a hard shell to protect me

from fierce animals

the homie laughed and gave her a tough

hard shell

and a chicharitha tortoise still wears

it today

the end

it's only a story that's not where the

toys got its

shell well it's kind of fun to think

that that's the way it happened

yeah it was perfect for today because

today's

animal day say monica can you make any

animal sounds

a horse huh yeah i can meow like a cat

yeah hey yeah that's good

how about you can you make animal sounds

good where do tortoises really get their

shell

well i think they grow it just like you

grow your bones or your teeth

well maybe real tortoises do that but

this book was about pretend tortoises

not about

real-life tortoises i could tell because

because they speak

yeah the mouse and the leopard and all

the other animals

didn't act like real animals let's read

a book about real animals

oh i have one here about bears would you

like to read it michael

i would love to this one is called

in the bushy willow bottomland honeypot

ambled

stopped and sniffed

[Music]

on a rock spine against the sky stood

old man of mountains

honeypot watched as old man scrambled

down the rock slide

the closer he came the bigger he looked

it was june the mating moon of grizzlies

and that night under the stars the

two great bears became a pair

over the next days they browsed together

they tossed their great heads and they

chased each other

one morning honeypot rambled on hungry

for berries

an old man went on his own way up in the

mountains

all summer honeypot read the wind and

the mysteries of the rivers

seeking food

and in the fall she ate to get fat for

the winter

days grew short

[Music]

and nights grew long

[Music]

honeypot sensed the snow rolling in

[Music]

she dug a den on a slope away from the

wind

made a bed of bear grass moss and boughs

of young fur

finished just in time soon

the big snows came

[Music]

then honeypot snuggled warm in her soft

bed

snored in a sleep so deep her heart beat

so

slow that you might think that she would

sleep

forever

moons passed and drifts piled

finally in the heart of winter lightfoot

was born

helpless almost hairless blind

and no bigger than a hamster he nursed

in the deep dark warmth

of his mother's den

come spring two moons later honeypot and

lightfoot awoke

lightfoot bumbled out blinking in the

sunshine

a furry ball of hunger he followed as

his mother hunted and

grazed and dug for roots showing our

cubs good foods to eat

if lightfoot strayed honeypot swatted

him back into line

but not all was the business of finding

food

mother and cub love to play whoosh honey

pond lightfoot

plunged down the slopes sliding to a

stop in a shower of slush

again and again whoosh sliding on their

belly back and rump

rolling head over tail

[Music]

all through spring honey pond lightfoot

loped and ambled

eating bear grass bear flowers bear

clover

and if they were lucky

honey every two or three hours lightfoot

stopped a nurse

he nestled his mother and he drank rich

warm

milk after eating they would sleep the

hot hours on a day bed dug into the soft

earth

then one day towards the end of spring

a huge grizzly big hairy one

lumbered down over the deadfall the

muscles of his great flanks

rippling with a sudden roar

big hairy one came galloping after

lightfoot fast as a racehorse

life would scramble away he could feel

harry once breath

honeypot lunged between them lightfoot

slid beneath her legs

tumbled into the river and was swept

away

the last lightfoot herd as he wailed and

rolled down the current

was his mother's roar rumbling off the

cliffs

[Music]

lightfoot tumbled and choked in the

white water hooked a snag

climbed up and waited shivering in the

spray

[Music]

as the dark dropped and the moon rose

lightfoot y'all but he did not let go

[Music]

when dawn spread across the sky

lightfoot saw honeypot

pick her away bleeding and ragged over

the river boulders

at last honeypot reached up above the

roar of the waterfall

snatched your cub and held him tight

lightfoot was safe

honeypot couldn't play with lightfoot

until her wounds had healed

a moon past and another moon

then one day honeypot bent a willow over

for him

and when lightfoot jumped on it honeypot

let the bush spring up

and lightfoot flipped into the river

splash

[Music]

through another year of moons and

seasons lightfoot grew

learning from honeypot where to feast on

the juiciest roots and berries

dig the best den and find the best

places to play

soon lightfoot would be ready to go off

on his own

the end no that really could happen

yep yep the animals in this story are

different

they don't speak like people do for one

thing

that's right this book tells how

animals really are you know something

funny

in the first page where it said honey

paul stopped and sniffed

uh oh i can feel it coming

all i could smell yeah was skunk smell

sorry kino it gave me a chuckle yeah

it's okay buddy

i'm going home to wash my clothes double

wash them

triple wash them see may i take a

picture next time we go to the park

he's in for a big surprise
