16x07 - The Russian Front

Post by bunniefuu »

Narrator: Five bitter weeks
into the w*r for king crab...

The end is in sight.

Casey: We're not giving up.

Narrator: The now-tattered
american fleet mends wounds,

steeling themselves
for a final fight

to claim their
multi-million-dollar quarry.

[ speaking russian ]

narrator: And with
the russian competition

bringing down the hammer...

Sig: If we want to try to beat
the russians at their own game,

we need to make
every minute count.

Narrator:
...Team usa claws to claim

the highest prices
in bering sea history...

Johnathan: All the cream's
taken off the top.

If you don't find any crab,

then you could lose
the whole battle.

Narrator:
...Before the foreign juggernaut

floods the global market.

Whoo!

This is the most dangerous time.

Narrator:
It's k*ll or be k*lled.

You ain't home free until you
walk into that front door.

Whoa!

It's the u.S. Of a.
Versus mother russia.

-Steady on!
-Aah!

If you want to work together,
I'll jump in there with you.

[ men cheering ]

ha-ha-ha h*!

Hit that [bleep]

what the hell?

But it's gonna cost us
tens of thousands.

Oh!

Yeah!

That's cool.

Sig: Is he overboard?

Is he overboard?!

[ bell ringing ]

-we don't know!
-Is he overboard?!

-I don't know yet!
-I don't know.

narrator: 230 miles northeast
of dutch harbor,

on the saga bandit...

Jake: Here we go, fellas,
first pot.

so this is the gooseneck.

It's hitting a hammer, man,
hitting like a hammer.

There's gonna be
60 crab in this pot.

I'll just have to go
through the gear twice.

Probably.

I believe in you,
anderson!

Narrator:
With 160,000 pounds caught,

now slogging in to the 35th day
of their season...

I think I just grabbed
another additional

16,000 pounds of crab to catch,

which is some guys'
full season.

Narrator:
...New boat owner jake anderson

and captain
johnathan hillstrand

squeeze the gooseneck
to catch a last-minute

staggering 17,000 pounds
of king crab.

jake: Here we go, first pot.

Coming up!

They're all females.

[bleep]

I'll be out here till
christmas on these numbers.

Man!

[ sighs ]
[bleep]

there's no way there's 17,000
pounds in this gear right here.

I don't know how there could be.

Man: Coming up!

narrator:
Single-digit pots.

Johnathan: We're still trying
to beat the russians.

We're gonna be the last ones
out here if we don't watch out.

Narrator: Now facing a king crab
price in free fall,

jake and johnathan hunker
down for a grind,

eager to catch their crab
before the russians

slash the american price
to rubles on the dollar.

I just don't want to waste
all the time it's gonna take

to move all this gear
and prospect.

johnathan: What the...?

I see a keith colburn pot
in the area here,

so maybe we could
partner up with keith.

Because he's probably
on something.

Maybe it's a worth
a try.

I know with you here,
it could be good.

Keith:
I'll tell you what, jake,

you've got me
totally frazzled right now.

Narrator: While jake's
relationship with keith

hasn't always been smooth...

You screw me once,
you never work with me again.

Yeah, man!

Narrator: ...Johnathan has
the magic touch as mr. Wizard.

It's good to see you.

I haven't smiled
in a long time, my friend.

Wile e. Coyote
and roadrunner.

We've got nothing
to lose, so...

Keith's never
done me wrong.

Hey, you got me here,
wizard?

They're too [bleep]
far away to hear me, dude.

You can't hear that far away.

Keith: Yeah, I got you fine.
How's it going down there?

Whoa!

Surviving about it.

Put a skull and crossbones
right where I'm at.

[bleep] really?
Wah wah!

Zero crab, 28 hours.

Okay, that's good to know.

Alright, well, I've got to get
all the way up north

where I'm at here,
another almost 20 miles.

And then I've got prospect
gear way out to the east.

If you want to work together,
I can give you that.

If you find crab,
then get your gear on it

and start pounding on it,

and I'll jump in there
with you.

Narrator: While keith heads
to his gear up north,

he offers to let the saga
check and haul

his other prospect string out
east, saving him time.

Johnathan: Yeah, keith,
that sounds like

a little partnership would
be exactly what we both need.

But you got to give up

every scrap of information
you have,

and you have to give it up
as soon as you get it.

Narrator:
There's only one catch.

If you're hauling decent pots,
let them know immediately.

Each partner must
inform the other

the second they find crab.

So everyone can join
in the harvest.

That's a good plan, brother.
Let's do this.

Roadrunner out.
Beep-beep!

Keith: There's very few guys
out here I can trust.

John hillstrand
I trust, unequivocally.

We both have the same goal.

Gets these boats
off the finishing grounds

and get this crab
to the market.

Narrator:
Partnering with pirates?

Brave men.

Across the bering sea,
on the cornelia marie...

Casey: This is where we check
the depths

of what they're fishing
over in russia.

So we really should be able to
rip through some gear.

Narrator:
...On the same eastern depths

as their russian rivals...

Right at that threshold
right now,

before the russians gonna
flood their crab in.

So it's really we're make it
or break it right now.

...Captains josh harris
and casey mcmanus

are one haul away
from doing america proud

and nabbing the soon-to-vanish
payday at the dock...

Hoping it has a 30,
40 average.

Narrator:
...If their crab pots

hold a consistently
high average.

Casey: If we're not getting
our average,

then we're screwed.

Boo!

That ain't very good.

We need more than that.

Josh: Well, we'll see
what happens.

[ men cheering ]

mm!

That's what [bleep]
it's all part of the rush.

The hunt and the thrill.

Man #2: 43, 4-3!

Whoo!
-That's a good one.

As long as we keep
getting more than average.

Ugh!

Casey:
Ooh, that don't look good.

It's kind of...

Our numbers are on
a roller coaster right now.

I'd like to get consistent.

It's just like gambling,

you never know
what you're gonna get.

Casey:
High pot at this point's 52.

Our low pot was five.

I honestly don't know
if we're gonna make it

right now or not.

Narrator: Skipper's choice --

on the hand, stack out now
but risk coming in short

if their average
drops any further.

I'm picking my fingers
to the bone, literally.

On the other, set back
to guarantee their poundage,

but risk missing
the record prices.

Casey: If we somehow
come up short on this,

it's gonna cost us
tens of thousands,

not just a couple
of hundred bucks.

If we hit this little pocket
here of 30s and 40s,

we could make this happen.

executive call.

I feel confident.

Narrator:
The captains make the call

to put all 180 pots on deck

to claim sky-rocketing prices
before they fall.

We're either gonna be confident
or we're gonna be arrogant.

narrator:
90 miles southwest...

...On the northwestern...

-Almost done, mandy.
-Mm-hmm.

Homestretch,
last little giddy-up.

Come on, fellas, shake it out
of your eyes, man, let's go.

Narrator: ...Running on fumes,
captain sig hansen

and relief skipper
and daughter mandy,

crawl for the light
at the end of the tunnel.

Sig: You know, we ventured
more out to the west, southwest.

Hopefully, you know,
we'll know.

If there's crab in these,
then we're safe.

This is what's gonna
take us home.

If we want to get this price
established as soon as possible

and try to beat, you know,
the russians at their own game,

we have to do this
sooner than later.

Here we go.

Narrator:
To out-pace the russian fleets

before the soaring dock
price nosedives,

the skipper leans on pots
set to the southwest,

he hopes, one final time.

You got bait ready?

Not yet.

I thought nick was supposed to
come out and get it ready.

Pots up here.

Hold on,
we're missing someone!

Well, are we gonna
haul or not?

Yeah, wait a second.

he's probably taking a [bleep]

might be.

Nick?

Go see if he's using
my [bleep]

find him!
Come on, let's get going.

Come on!

I didn't see him.

Mark said he didn't
see him in the galley

or the engine room.

Are you guys [bleep] with me?

Is he overboard?

Is he overboard?!

Sig: Is he overboard?

Is he overboard?!

[ bell ringing ]

I don't see anything.

Is he overboard?!

-We don't know!
-Is he overboard?!

Hey, nick!

I think he came out
earlier for bait.

He came out earlier
with new bait.

Check the bait freezer.

Maybe he took a piss
or something!

He's in
the bait freezer!

[bleep]

sorry.

I've been in there
for 20 [bleep] minutes!

He's in the bait freezer.

[bleep] you.
He was in the bait...

[bleep] what the [bleep]

oh, my god, my heart.

I thought he was
passed out someplace.

You didn't even [bleep]
look in the bait?!

Sorry, nick.

Didn't you hear me screaming
and yelling?

[bleep] damn it.

[bleep]

narrator: Without a latch
on the inside,

and with the engine
drowning his cries for help,

deckhand nick mavar
was trapped in the bait freezer.

What are you...

Nick: I could hear you,
"are you overboard?"

I going,
"no, I'm in here,

I'm in here!"

can we start?
Yeah.

Are you okay?

I'm okay, just pissed.

Though his deckhand's
defrosted...

-Are you ready?
-Ready!

Alright, let's start.

Because we need our quota.

Narrator: ...Captain sig

faces the prospect
of a costly reset

if his string
shuts him out in the cold.

Might be a little chilly, nick.

[ laughing ]

have some warm soup
when we're done.

nick: Come on!
Oh, yeah!

Yeah!

Sig: h*-h*-h* h*!

That's how I want
to start the day off.

Hope we can get through
the rest of this gear.

We get what we need
and get back in.

Narrator:
In dutch harbor...

...On the summer bay...

Bill: Someway, somehow,
we're here, it's over.

Narrator: ...Captain
"wild" bill wichrowski

takes his $480,000 king bounty.

Bill: Obviously we had
the failed engine.

We finished, but it's 100 grand
to get back on track.

Narrator:
And dumps his profits right back

into fixing his on-again,
off-again engine.

Bill:
We've got to rebuild in dutch,

air-freight all the parts
and pieces in jackson.

A whole overhaul of 30%.

It was like a curse.

There's only so many
opportunities to make money.

I'm gonna have to
figure something else out.

I've got a good buddy
that's a russian guy.

He thinks he might have an in
for experienced captains.

Narrator:
Several days ago...

Alright, well I guess we'll see
how it goes. I'm interested.

Narrator:
...Bill received an offer
from a russian contact

to helm one of their new ships
in need a seasoned skipper.

The russians are building
more boats for the new system.

Every block of real estate has
to have so many boats fishing,

and they just don't have them.

Narrator: Out of his profits
for king season,

bill considers a comeback.

The russian program
is blowing up.

It could open up
a global job market for me.

Narrator: And if that means
going to russia,

so "v" it.

Maybe this russian trip
is gonna have to happen.

narrator: One mile
from the russian line...

maybe if I do my russian dance,
it'll bring us good luck.

you're not as good as him.

Narrator:
...On the seabrooke...

Scott:
We are not catching anything.

We've covered every inch
of ground there is to cover.

Other than one move, this is the
last canyon that we find crab in

before we hit
the russian border.

So we're just gonna fan
our pots out, you know.

We're gonna give
one more ditch effort.

Narrator: Charged with finding
30,000 pounds

of golden king crab

to reopen the fishery
for the first time in 33 years,

captain scott campbell jr.
Loses his one whiff of the crab,

leaving him a single spot
left to check --

the canyon, right under
the russian line.

Scott: We're really kind of
banking on making some money,

so we can use that
for a down payment.

I got a boat I need to buy.

Narrator: It's the last place
for the skipper to make a stand

and earn enough
for a second boat

to expand the family business,
the lady alaska.

Just let her go.

if my chart system's wrong
and I'm in the russian waters,

I'm gonna be in deep [bleep]

that would be a [bleep]
way to end the season,

getting escorted back
to dutch harbor

by the russian coast guard.

man #3:
Yeah, yeah, yeah!

Narrator: After shelling off
his opening salvo

directly into
the canyon grounds

only a mile
from the russian line,

junior readies to drop
his last five pots.

[ alarm beeping ]

we've got no power
to my auto pilot.

Aw, come on!
Hey, guys.

[bleep]

damn auto pilot
just turned off.

So without auto pilot,

we have
no lateral indicator.

Jack: If something happens
and you drift over the line,

I mean, you're basically
invading another country.

They can sh**t you
out of the water if they want.

[ man speaks indistinctly ]

narrator: A stone's throw
from the russian border...

Scott: I don't have any power
to my steering here.

If we cross that line,
we're in big trouble.

Big, big trouble.

Narrator: ...Without steering,

the seabrooke
drifts towards russian waters,

where junior can lose
everything in his tanks

and kick off
an international incident.

See that bird right there,
that far one?

That bird's in russia.

Scott: Hot-wire it is
what we're gonna do.

That's the easiest way
to explain it,

is we're hot-wiring
our auto pilot,

so we can have power
direct to it.

Man #4: We're close to the line
right now.

That's 106 foot.

And we're
drifting fast, huh?

Putin's not gonna
like that.

Let's see.

Nothing.

Yeah, it's on, it's on,
it's on.

-Get out of here.
-We need to jump her in.

Go, go, go!

-Go!
-We did it!

Get out of russia!

Oh [bleep]
whoo!

[bleep] guys
that was a close one.

405 foot from the russian line.

And that was about
45 seconds,

and we would've
been over that line

at the rate we were drifting.

My god.

This has just been
a trip from hell.

We need to find
something, though.

If this could hit,
this could make all the pain

and suffering go away.

If we don't see anything there,
I mean, that's it.

narrator:
650 miles southeast...

On the saga bandit...

Come on!
Show me the money.

these are our pots.

Narrator:
...Captains jake and johnathan

haul the wizard's
eastern prospect gear...

A captain uses any means
at his disposal

to catch the crab.

...Hoping their partnership
with keith

will yield the extra
17,000 pounds

they need to end
their king season.

25's a good sum.

Jake: Here goes.

Whoo!
Whoo!

Is it the right kind?

It's male, it's all males,
it's just males!

It's a [bleep] good sign for us.

Alright!

Yeah!

Oh, oh, ooh!

Bering sea crabbing, baby!

Oh! [ laughs ]

how many do you think's
in that pot?

Captain.
Captain.

-Whoo!
-That's a good pot.

That's a good pot, man.
It's a good pot, I think.

Let's just set
our gear up, jake.

But we told keith we'd set them
on the best side.

I'm just worried about

when he comes out
to pick them up.

Narrator: Johnathan's plan --

set the saga pots back now

and deal with keith's pots,
uh...Later.

Johnathan: Alright, guys.

[ men yelling indistinctly ]

71 degrees.
71 degrees.

I'm gonna be
like a real captain.

30 degrees port.

30 degrees port.

Port, captain!

Around there, captain.

Narrator:
195 miles northwest...

On the saga bandit's
partner in crab...

Wah! Wah!

Nothing!

No crab.
Zero crab in that last pot.

Oh, come on.
What the [bleep]

damn it!

I got to call jake.

Really need to know
what the hell's going on

in that prospect gear.

Saga, you guys on this one?

I gotta think,
if they found something,

they would've sent me a s.O.S.

"get your a*s down here
quick as possible" message.

woo-hoo-hoo-hoo!

50! 50!
Wait, what is this?

It's hair color!

Get a [bleep]
lighter, dude.

I thought he was gonna
to blow-torch me.

I thought I was gonna get
my face blow-torched.

You scared the [bleep]
out of me.

You scared the [bleep]
out of me.

I thought I was gonna
get blow-torched.

[bleep]

I go, "what is he doing?"

you're spitting hairspray.

Your other hand
with a lighter.

[bleep]

I thought...

Because I light hairspray
on fire it all the time.

[ laughing ]

[ men cheering ]

narrator:
Due to excessive celebration...

Going home, baby!

I'm [bleep]
I'm so sorry, dude.

...Jake and johnathan
miss keith's call.

I'm gonna need help.

I'm gonna need psychiatric help
after this.

I'm serious.

I'm gonna need
psychiatric help.

ah [bleep]

never let other people
haul your prospect gear, ever!

I don't want to get suspicious.
I just want my gear back.

That's all I want.

Narrator: 130 miles northeast
of dutch harbor...

[ men cheering ]

narrator:
...On the cornelia marie...

There you go.

Maria -- she's holding
her own.

Yep.

doing a really,
really good job.

We may or may not be
in the final arc

of our stack out.

Only time is gonna tell.

Narrator:
With greenhorn, maria docile,

stepping up to the plate
on her premiere crab season...

Josh: Last pot.

Alright, maria, you'll be
throwing the hook.

Yeah!

Narrator: ...Captain josh
gives her one last test.

Don't [bleep] up.

Maria: You got it!

-Alright, you've got this.
-You got it.

[ men cheering ]

yeah!
Good placement.

I love it!

-Seven?
-Alright.

[ groans ]

josh: It's gonna be up
to the old calculator

to tell us what our final
numbers are gonna be here.

Narrator: Pouring through
their log books...

13, 39...

...Josh and casey double-check

to make sure
their numbers add up.

I get 669.
So we're right there.

So you think we're heavy?

I think so.

okay.
Screw it, let's go in.

Alright.

Narrator: Betting they have
what they need,

the captains officially
end their king season.

[ ship horn blows ]

but until they offload,
final judgment awaits.

Oh, my ears.

As the cornelia boys
race to dock,

170 miles northwest...

Keith: Hey! Anybody on here?
Hello? Hello?

Are you guys on here?

It's always an indicator
that your partner's on crab

when he doesn't answer
the phone.

Narrator:
...Wizard captain,

keith colburn, hails
his new partners

but is greeted
only with static.

Keith: [bleep] really?

As of right now,
we need numbers.

We need something to work on
because we have not seen it.

John's my friend, but, you know,
it's been said before,

once you leave the dock
out there in the bering sea,

there are no friends.

Saga, you on this one?

Narrator:
On the saga bandit...

Coming in
with some heat, baby!

Oh, babe!

[ laughing ]

-whoo!
-Look at that!

Yeah, baby! Boom!

48, 4-8.

[ laughs ]

keith: Hello?

Hey, anybody on here?
Hello? Hello?

Hello, hello, hello!

Jake: Hey, john,
keith's trying to call.

Hey, yes!

-Woo-hoo!
-Yeah!

Are you on here, keith?

Hey, keith.

Yeah, where are
all my prospect pots?

What have you
got going on here?

Where were those at?

Yeah.

I don't know
what happened to us,

but we just caught up
finishing this here.

But we got some good news.

Your prospect hit
pretty good.

Alright, well, hey,
thanks for getting me

that information
a week later, guys.

I appreciate it.

This is the problem.

This is
the [bleep] problem.

Narrator:
Johnathan fulfills his bargain,

setting keith's pots on crab,
but how he set them...

...That's another story.

Give me the numbers
on the first pot of the string.

There's a weird u-string
that johnny said.

Oh, please, just all
I need is one number.

Oh, my god.

It bends.
It turns and bends.

Narrator: In an effort to space
the wizard pots

away from the saga's,

instead of the straight line
keith wanted...

Oh, man.

Narrator: ...His gear is...
Well, curved.

He's thinking...

Come look at this
big dildo set, dude.

This is a big [bleep] p*nis
hanging.

Jake: Roger.

Let me tell him.

The next string
that we have,

I don't know why I think

it looks like a reproductive
organ on a walrus,

but there it is.

It looks like
a walrus p*nis.

I didn't do this
on purpose.

It just ended up
like this.

Keith, I swear to god,

I did not do this
on purpose.

It just ended up
like this.

I like that.

Well...

I'm stoked.

Hopefully it's going
to get you guys to town sooner

and it's going
to save my season.

Thank you, thank you.
You saved our a*s.

[ man cheering ]

keith: Oh, my god, man, it's
the lunatic boat over there.

I got all my apples
in one basket,

and we're gonna find out
whether or not

I put them
in the right basket.

Narrator: One mile
from the russian border...

We're about ready
to get started

and figure out our fate here.

If we don't see any crab
in this string,

we're likely not gonna see it
in any other string.

Narrator: ...Junior's last shot

to find the golden crab
he needs

and reopen the fishery
for america --

cozying up to the northern-most
canyon of the grounds.

Scott: If we're gonna come up
with the down payment

for that lady alaska,

we need to hit crab
right off the get-go.

We'll pull the stringers
right here.

We're pulling it right now
as we're speaking.

Well, I'm speaking.

We're gonna have to see
some pretty epic fishing

or it's just not
gonna happen.

Maybe this will be
our lucky roll.

Narrator:
This week on "salty takes"...

Good, 90 degrees,
I'm coming over.

Hey, john,
you're the only man

I would ever let run my boat
in my chair with no pants!

Where are your pants?

All I did was come up here
and sit down

because no one
was up here.

And all of a sudden,
I've got to do all this [bleep]

will you quit
looking at me like that?

Oh [bleep] dude,
not these chicken legs.

Producer: Chicken legs,
look at those chicken legs.

This wheel house
is like a sauna up here.

I'm just trying
to cool off, dude.

I'm just glad you're not
wearing banana hammocks.

Narrator: The cornelia marie
is loaded up

but waits on the final weigh-in.

And junior's quest for gold
teeters on the russian edge.

Narrator:
On the seabrooke...

Scott: We're gonna have to see
some pretty epic fishing

or it's just not
gonna happen.

Narrator: ...Junior needs
his russian line set to hit

or his entire golden king
crab expedition

will be all for nyet.

Come on, guys!

-Whoo!
-Come on!

Nothing!

[ sighs ]

I don't know.
This is not looking good.

Not looking good at all.

Whoo!

What the [bleep]

nothing!

Water.
Water and broken dreams.

Scott: You know, we covered
every square inch

where we've seen some crab,

and, you know, the reality
is there's a reason

why nobody's been up here
since 1987.

Alright, guys, I can't
haul any more blanks.

We're just gonna keep
stacking all this gear on.

We're gonna call it a season.

It's been an epic failure,

Narrator:
Catching only 4,500 pounds,

junior falls well short

shuttering the american golden
king crab fishery once again.

It's been a failure.
Absolute failure.

narrator: In dutch harbor,
on the cornelia marie...

Right now we are
off-loading our crab.

Our average weight is a lot
lower than we anticipated.

Narrator: After stacking on
such a narrow margin,

a lower-than-expected
pound-per-crab average

might been captains
josh and casey

left tens of thousands
of dollars in the bering sea.

So this will be close,
real close.

Josh: That's it.

[bleep] 3,000 pounds.

I think so.
We didn't hit our mark.

somewhere in there,
we're 570 crab off.

We could've had that
in one more string.

We could've, we didn't.

Narrator:
Coming in 3,000 pounds under

shorts the cornelia
a costly 5% of their quota.

But our count
suggested we were there,

that's why we stopped.

$36,000...
Yeah.

in the water, dude.

Oh.

good job, guys!

Yes!

Narrator:
Across the fleet...

Johnathan:
Alright, guys, last pot.

Holy [bleep]

this is badass, look at this.

Here you go!

-Yeah!
-Yeah, buddy!

Whoo!

Narrator:
...Heroes of the bering sea

[ both laugh ]

that is cool.
That is awesome!

It's almost
a crossbar, dude.

You can't make that up!
