06x09 - Night Lights / The Garden Hose / The Notebook

it had been a day of packing things up

katie learned that a teddy bear takes up

much more room than a bathing suit

orbee found out that even though

everything you put in your suitcase is

light

when you're all finished the suitcase

can be very heavy

they both discovered that you have to

imagine what you'll need for three days

in a row

when you go away for a long weekend

katie's family was visiting micah on his

farm

from the very start of the visit katie

felt like something special was going to

happen

and it did but not by the way

[Music]

it was late summer and the days were

warm the three friends played in the

straw each had a ride

on spirit's back

micah took katie and orbee over to give

persephone the piglet a small apple

persephone starfouled in anticipation

her nose

wiggled tipped up and her mouth opened

katie giggled so hard she couldn't hold

the apple so

orbee fed the apple to persephone who

chomped it up joyfully

then orbee sniffled and snorted just

like the piglet

maze flashed in the creek and tried hard

to find a perfect round stone

in the creek bed katie did a splash

dance in the shallow water

she kicked the water up high in the air

and the drops of water

sparkled in the sunlight as they rained

down around here

orbee did a tap dance that made him

really wet

all the little fish in the creek went

swimming away when orbeez

micah did a silly dance and wiggled his

bottom a lot

mom and dad and micah's mom clapped for

each dancer

and their beautiful water dances the

water dances were incredible fun

but katie had this inkling twinkling

feeling inside her that there was

something else

something special coming

next they went on a kindling hunt in the

woods near micah's house

as mom showed katie and orbee what

kindling looked like

micah came up behind her with an armload

full

the reason they were collecting kindling

was because after their barbecue dinner

they were going to have a campfire and

roast marshmallows

everybody was excited

the sky behind them was orange pink and

electric looking as they walked back to

the house

arms filled with kindling the calls of

the barbecue were heating up

the day was coming to an end and hungry

was rumbling around in their tummies

supper was delicious katie orby and

micah

pretended to be waiters clearing the

tables when it was all finished

micah's mom brought out a cake with

sparklers on it

it wasn't anybody's birthday so katie

and orbee were a little confused but

micah stood right up on the bench of the

picnic table spread his arms out wide

and with a smile that crinkled his whole

face

he told them it was a we're glad you're

here

cake everybody laughed and clapped

because in the dark

the cake really looked spectacular

and they were all glad to be there

of course you couldn't blow the

sparklers out so you've got to enjoy

them to the

last second when they burn to darkness

the cake was special but katie felt that

something even more special than cake

was coming

it was getting cooler out so micah and

orbee brought warm sweaters out for

everybody

dad lit the bonfire and everybody saw

how their kindling helped

start the big log the cake had been

yummy

but i have to tell you that full or not

the three friends were eager for

marshmallows

toasting them was great fun and dad ate

a lot so the friends could toast more

finally he couldn't eat another one he

was stuffed

he suggested a round of their favorite

game of

spooky in the dark with squeals of

delight

he played a good game but the running

around didn't help dad's full tummy

he told him that he had marshmallow itis

and he needed to lie down

and let his tummy settle that sounded

like fun so the others play on the

ground with dad

and above them in a deep purpley blue

night sky

the stars hung and twinkled seemingly

near enough to touch in fact

it was so beautiful that everybody lay

quietly

taking in the grandness of it all

and i have to tell you at that moment

the special thing the

very special thing that katie knew would

happen

happened as everyone else was looking at

a satellite making its way across the

sky

katie noticed something off in the other

direction

it was a shimmering shaft of green light

sort of rippling in the sky

katie pointed it out to her family and

friends as she did

the green light got very bright

and turned to pink it moved almost like

a curtain

swaying in the wind when they saw it

they

all gasped katie thought that a sky was

it

had waved his wand and made a magic

knight painting happen

orbee wondered if maybe it was the

headlight of an intergalactic spaceship

but dad told them it was neither of

those things

that explained that it was ice crystals

in the night sky

they were reflecting light and

decorating the night

dad pointed out that it often happened

when temperatures started to change

they were called the northern lights or

aurora borealis the lights turned from

pink to green again

as they glimmered across the sky

mom told her family and friends that it

was a very special night

as the northern lights didn't occur very

often in their area

micah had been quiet the whole time

watching the lights

glowing fading and changing color

finally he asked his mom if tonight they

could make a memory as they often did

in fact mom and micah's mom had been

making memories since they were little

girls

so the two families took a picture in

their minds of the sky

as it was at that very moment

they remembered the day and all the fun

they had in it

and they locked it in their minds

forever

katie told them she had a feeling that

this would be a special day in her life

and now at last she knew why she held

orbeez

and micah's hands as they looked up at

the lights

and do you know that if you asked any

one of them about the lights that night

they'd remember it clearly they'd have

it in their memory

to this very day and i know

if you have a special day you'll be able

to take a picture of it

in your memory too and remember it

forever just like katie

and orbee

did you know did you know did you know

[Music]

did you know you can make fun things

with flour

water old newspaper a balloon and paint

mix flour and water until it's like glue

to drag some strips of newspaper through

place them evenly on your balloon when

it's dry

this is called paper mache make sure you

blow up your balloon before you start

[Music]

it had been a day for

spring thing katie learned that when you

take your bicycle out of the garage

after the winter

it's a good idea to give it a bath

orbee found out that when you open up a

lawn chair

you might be surprised to find a spider

has been snoozing there

and they both discovered that the garden

hose makes a funny

sputtering noise the very first time you

use it in the spring

the day it happened katie and i were

having a great time raking old dead

leaves and sticks into a pile

in the flower garden dad was digging

holes and mom was placing plants in them

when they were finished with the dead

leave katie and orbee

helped cover up the roots of each tiny

new plant

everybody followed the whole digger

along and dad said they made a great

gardening chain

as the family looked at their newly

planted garden

katie and orbee clapped in appreciation

it was exciting to

see the garden come alive all right many

of the plants needed to flower but still

it looked like summer was coming and

winter was over

and when you're five that all by itself

is an adventure mom decided to go inside

and make lunch and lemonade

the day was warm and sunny and she

thought

it was perfect for eating out on the

picnic table

katie wanted to stir the lemonade so she

hurried in with mom

carrying their dirty work gloves

dad and orbee were loading the twigs and

leaves into the wheelbarrow

orbee was having a great time he

pretended he was a huge

steam shovel as he dug into the leaf

pile with his big gloves on

he made a steam shovel noise and picked

up a load

then he turned like a machine over to

the wheelbarrow

when his hands were right over the top

of the wheelbarrow

he let go everything fell in

dad told him he was a wonderful machine

and that he was very glad

the orbeez team trouble was working in

his backyard

orbee chuckled and kept on scooping and

lifting

[Music]

when they were done dad told orbee he

was going to take the

full and almost spilling over

wheelbarrow to the compost pile

and empty it out he asked orbee

if he wanted to water all the new plants

before mom brought out the food

orbee left to play with the hose and he

hadn't done it for a long time

so dad turned the tap on orbee felt the

water fill the hose

he headed over to the new plants and

began spraying them as dad picked up the

wheelbarrow

that signaled that he was doing a fine

job and he headed over to the compost

pile

[Music]

as orbee watched the hoes shower the

little plants an orange one made him

think of

fire he imagined that was what it was

it was just to pretend fire because

orbee knew you'd absolutely

never ever play with fire he looked at

the little plant

imagining that the water was putting the

fire out

then he moved on to the next he

pretended

that one was a fire too as he watered

the garden

he imagined that he was dressed in a

fireman's clothes but he was fighting

a roaring blaze he crouched down as he

thought firemen would do

to hold on to the big powerful hose

from the compost pile dad called to

orbee that he was going to go in and

wash up

he reminded orbee not to water the

flowers too much

orbee raised his arm and waved it down

but in orbeez mind it wasn't bad at all

it was his fire chief telling him to do

a good job

that's when the back wall of the house

caught orbeez eye he looked at it

and thought that maybe he should water

it too so the pretend fire wouldn't

spread

he lifted his hose and sprayed the wall

of the house

inside mom and katie had just run down

to get the lemonade out of the freezer

and dad had gone upstairs to wash

nobody noticed that the screen in the

open kitchen window was getting wet

and nobody noticed that a sprinkle of

water

was falling onto the kitchen floor

outside orbee was pretending that the

fire was quite fierce now

and just like a real fireman he was

spraying away up high near the

kitchen window i have to say he didn't

notice that

the window was open he was too busy

hearing the

cheers from the crowd as he the mighty

fireman saved the day

katie and mum had a whole lot of trouble

finding lemonade and finally found a

container of pink lemonade at the back

of the freezer

by the time they started back up the

stairs water

was trickling down mom

shrieked that she must have left the

kitchen tap running

and raced up but when she got there the

tap was turned off

a shower was pouring in through the

window screen

she shouted for whoever was using the

hose

to stop pointing it at the window

outside orbee heard people cheering that

he was a hero

and he smiled to himself he continued to

shower the wall with water and didn't

stop until

mom threw open the back door and loudly

called his name

orbee snapped out of his imagination and

came back into reality

and the truth was he was as shocked as

mom

that he had watered the kitchen instead

of the garden

[Music]

dad raced down the stairs and skidded

across the kitchen floor

as he asked what was wrong his feet flew

in

awful directions he had to grab onto mom

to stay up

it was really funny katie laughed until

tears rolled down her cheeks

and so did mom and dad

orbee burbled that he was so sorry

he was pretending he was a fireman and

hadn't noticed what he was doing

that hauled out a big bucket and gave

orbee the mop

katie wanted to help too so she took the

little mop and together with mom and

dad's help

they dried the kitchen floor

as they munched on their sandwiches and

sipped lemonade

orbee apologized again the dad told

orbee that something good had happened

when he flooded the kitchen

orbee didn't think what it was

so dad told him he had learned that

whenever you do a job whether it's fun

or not

it's important to keep your mind on it

and or be smiled because

dad was right and i hope

whenever you're helping out with family

chores

you'll remember what orbeez if you do

you'll be a wonderful helper

i just know it

did you know did you know did you know

[Music]

did you know bats are really good

hunters

because that's hunt for insects at night

they need more than their eyes

by sending out a high-pitched sound and

listening for the echo

they can find food no matter how dark it

is it's like being able to see

in the dark just imagine how useful that

could be

[Music]

it had been a day of little adventures

katie found out that if you're very

quiet a squirrel might come pretty close

to you and

sniff your peanut butter sandwich orbee

learned that if you spill your glass of

water on the front step

the sun drinks it all up and they both

discovered

that dragonfly have four wings instead

of two

mom said it was the perfect day for a

trip to the art supply store

to buy a little something special for

katie and orbeez

katie knew right away she needed a new

pad of paper for painting

barbie was not quite so sure what he

felt like but

he would know when he got there headed

for the art supply store

using the sidewalks and the crosswalks

to get there

when they arrived they looked in the

front window and katie pointed to

a big pad with a picture of paint

brushes on she told mom that was the one

she wanted

orbee looked at all the things in the

window but nothing caught his interest

inside katie found and picked up the

painting pad

orbee on the other hand walked up and

down the aisles

one after the other looking at all the

interesting things

he saw paints and pastels and stands and

pallets and all kinds of other things

what he didn't see

was anything that he wanted that is

until he saw

a really nice pen with wiggly lines on

when he looked closer he noticed it was

sitting right beside a notebook

and the cover of the notebook was a

picture of a castle with the moon above

it

it looked pretty he opened up the book

to see what the story was about

and discovered that there were no

pictures or even

words inside the notebook all there was

were

lines lots and lots of lines

the salesman noticed orbee looking at

the book curiously

and he asked if he could help orbee

pointed out that

somebody had left the story out of the

book

the salesman crouched down beside orbee

and smiled at him

he told him that in fact nobody had put

the story in yet

or be tried to understand

the salesman ran his finger along the

lines and said that they were

there to hold all the words to the story

that someone

would put into the little castle book

orbee looked at him

in astonishment he had never realized

that a book would come without the story

and he smiled

he told the salesman that if mom said

the price was right

he would take the little empty storybook

and fill it up

the salesman smiled back at orbee and

told him he imagined that aubry would

fill it up with

amazing stories orbeez smile

[Music]

when he showed it to mom she told him

the price was fine but

perhaps he'd like something more fun

than a notebook

orbee tooted that he couldn't imagine

anything more fun in the whole world

so of course mom agreed

katie was totally puzzled but orbee took

the book home with great pride

at home katie pointed out that the book

was for writing and

he didn't even know how to print yet and

the lines all over the pages

would ruin his drawings orbee smiled and

he told her

he didn't care he loved his book and

with that

he whisked it upstairs to the bedroom

katie shrugged

she didn't always understand orbee but

that was okay friends don't always

understand each other

katie pulled out her art materials and

began a painting on her new pen

a little later orbee asked mom if she

had a pen

he could use mom gave him a big blue one

overhearing katie mentioned that it was

boring to do a drawing with only one

color

orbee said he was writing not drawing

which

surprised her because he didn't know how

he held up his hand before she could say

it and made a note

in his book and kitty giggled

a little later katie carrying a load of

sand toys found

orbee sitting in the backyard she asked

him

if he wanted to play with her in the

sandbox orbee told her that it was nice

of her to ask but

he had to write in his book katie looked

at him curiously

she asked what he was writing and he

simply burbled

stuff orbee was

on the couch riding when the doorbell

rang it was miguel

who wanted to invite katie and orbee to

play t-ball with him

katie grabbed her ball cap and was

halfway out the door when she heard

orbee say

that he was too busy writing down stuff

he scribbled frantically to accentuate

this point

at dinner time the whole family was

talking about

orbeez new interest as mom dished out

his speech he asked orbee

what kind of things he was writing down

in his book

fingering his book orbee burbled stories

mom asked if he would like to read one

to the family

orbee chewed quickly finished up his

meal and then

opened his book on the pages there were

only

squiggles and shapes no words

he cleared his throat and then checked

to make sure

each family member was paying attention

katie giggled at him

with a big smile orbee started to tell

the story

of the whispering willows and the katy

wizard

katie's jaw dropped although there were

no words on the page

orby seemed to be reading his squiggly

line

at the end of the story when the breeze

blew the long willow branches making it

sound like whispering

katie clapped her hand it was a story of

one of their pretend

games and it was amazing how orbee had

remembered

every detail dad looked at the page and

wondered

if orbee had created his very own

language

mom said she thought orbee had a most

extraordinary memory

katie jumped up from her chair and ran

around the table

she had no idea how he did it but she

knew

he was one of the best storytellers in

the whole world

she planted a great big smooch in his

cheek she was so proud of him

[Music]

as time went by orbee went to school and

learned to read and write he filled

many notebooks with wondrous tales but

to this very day

if you ask him to read from the castle

book

he tells the whispering willow story the

very same way he did the first time

when he didn't even know how to write

and i bet in your life

you have been collecting some terrific

tales too

maybe one day you'll buy a notebook and

write them

all down so that you can share them with

other people

if you do i just know you will write

marvelous stories just like orbeez

maybe even better
