05x13 - Raccoon Rescue / Cheer Up Pals / Maple Sugar

it had been a day of surprising things

katie learned that even mommy sometimes

put the wrong socks together

orbee found out that if you blow a

really giant bubble gum balloon too much

it might it might just pop in your face

and they both discovered that when you

crawl under your bed

you find a whole lot of things that

you've been missing

katie was delighted to find her

binoculars they had been under her bed

for a while

she couldn't wait to look through them

when she turned them towards the window

she saw a very surprising thing

a big brownie thing swooped down in

front of her

orbeez saw it too nobody knew what it

was

then when orbeez squished his nose right

up against the window and looked down at

the ground below

he gasped and he burbled to katie that

it was an

animal and was lying very still on the

ground

katie looked too and in a split second

she could tell it needed help they ran

to get dead right away

well dad was in the middle of shaving

when katie and orbee burst in

they told him about the animal and with

lather flying off his face

dad raced behind katie and orbee to the

front door

he asked the friends to stay inside

while he took a look

whatever it was might be frightened so

you had to be careful about getting too

close

two noses were pressed against the front

window as dad quietly walked over

to the little brown shape he took a look

then he hurried back through the front

door he ran to the phone and as he

dialed

he told the friends that the animal in

trouble

was a raccoon dad figured it had fallen

from the roof

and needed an animal doctor after he

hung up he told katie and orbee that

soon a wildlife rescue person would come

by

the poor little raccoon probably had a

nasty bump on his head but

a rescue person would know just what to

do

the two friends felt a bit better when

they heard that they felt even better

when dad said

he needed them to do something very

important

out in the yard the raccoon was still

lying in the same spot

at a safe distance katie and orbee were

now being animal rescue people

by making sure nobody came close to the

injured raccoon

katie was using her binoculars to keep

watch

and orbee made quiet little keep-away

sounds

when anything came too close dad was

giving them a thumbs-up sign to tell

them

they were doing their jobs really well

but it wasn't long before the wildlife

rescue person arrived

he carried a big container that looked

like a plastic box

katie wanted to run and tell him that he

needed to hurry and help the raccoon

orbee wanted to toot at him to say

that it had fallen off the roof but dad

explained that first

you would have to approach the raccoon

very carefully

and see what was wrong katie

orby and dad watched as he took the top

off the container

and carefully placed it over the raccoon

after a minute he waved to dad and the

two friends

that they could come closer now

the man introduced himself his name was

lee

he told katie and orbee he loved animals

and really wanted to help this little

raccoon get all fixed up

that made katie and orbee feel better

then he let them look into the container

the raccoon was more awake now and that

was a good sign but lee said

its leg might be hurt he would take him

to the wildlife center

where the vets could help him or be

looked at the little animal

and made a friendly sound as lee

gently lifted the container into the

back of his truck

katie worried the little raccoon might

be frightened at the wildlife center

or be burbled that he thought so too

lee looked at them and told them that

they sure would be great wildlife

helpers when they grew up

and he told dad they could come by the

wildlife rescue center in the morning

and visit

that way they'd feel better about where

the little raccoon was

i don't have to tell you they were

pretty happy about that

the next morning the whole family

arrived at the wildlife rescue center

lee was already at the door waving them

in

inside he showed them a room where small

animals each had his own cage to rest in

there were squirrels and chipmunks and

rabbits and some baby skunks

and they saw two animal doctors wrapping

a bandage around the leg of a little

turtle

katie was really interested and didn't

notice orbee had stopped to look at

something else

he burbled there were more animals in

the special area outside but

everybody was watching the animal

doctors through the window he spotted a

deer

and two baby moose a little black bear

and something that looked like a dog it

was a coyote

he was just turning away when he heard a

very loud

howling sound orbee took off like a shot

and when katie turned around he was

nowhere to be seen

when she looked back at the two animal

doctors she saw something quite strange

one of them now held a spinning pink

thing in his arms

well i'm sure you can guess it was a

very

scared orbee who was shaking like jelly

the doctor put him down onto the table

and he listened to orbeez heartbeat with

his stethoscope

then put a cool bandage around his head

when orbee looked over and saw katie he

signed a big

sigh of relief the coyote cry had given

him quite a fright

but he felt better now later lee

explained that

wild animals are not meant to live

inside with humans

but they're meant to stay wild he said

that when each of the animals was well

it would be released back into nature

where it belonged

he pointed to a cage in the glass-to-off

area

there was the little raccoon

katie thought that he looked better

already

everybody was glad he was in such a good

place

lee thanked them very much for visiting

them katie thanked him for helping the

little raccoon get well

orbee thanked the vet for making him

feel better too

[Music]

well a few days later lee called to say

that the little raccoon was all better

and had gone back to his home in the

wild

and as you can imagine they were happy

to hear that

katie and orbee had already decided that

when they were old enough they'd be

wildlife rescuers too

and i don't know if they will or they

won't but i do know that

if they do all kinds of wild animals

will really appreciate their help

just like the raccoon and if your family

ever helps a wild animal i'm sure that

animal

will really appreciate it too

did you know musical instruments are

made of

all kinds of different things a trumpet

is made of a metal called brass

drums are made of wood with a cover

called the skin

guitars violins violas and cellos

are all made out of wood too what comes

from trees

but i don't think you could play a tree

[Music]

it had been a day

of silly things katie found out that

putting your shoes on the wrong feet

looks really funny

orbee learned that when mashed potatoes

find their way out of the end of your

nose

you look goofy and they both discovered

that a carrot clunching contest

can get pretty noisy

mom and dad were going out for the whole

day so grandpa and grandma came to stay

with katie and orbee

grandma decided it was the perfect day

to make some of her surprise brownies

katie and orbee wanted to take grandpa

to the parks home

they all set off now i have to tell you

that

when grandpa is at the park he is

usually a whole lot of fun

but this day was different after he

pushed katie on the swing and spun

orbee on the roundabout he went over and

sat on the bench

when katie waved to him to come over he

waved back but he didn't come

or be tooted that grandpa should try the

monkey bars but

he waved again and stayed on the bench

katie and orbee played for a while and

really didn't think too much of it

however when grandpa didn't want to do

chalk drawing on the path

they knew something was wrong katie

climbed up on the bench beside grandpa

and gave him a big hug

or be crouched down in front of him they

both told grandpa

that they loved him very much grandpa

hugged them back

and told the two friends that he knew

that they did

but i have to tell you grandpa didn't

smile or anything

that made katie and orbee very sad they

wanted grandpa to feel happy

grandpa told the two friends that he was

fine he just felt

a little sad today right before he came

over he heard that

one of his friends bruce was sick and

that made him feel bad

katie swung her legs on the bench and

she told him that

if he wanted to go to be with rusev

they'd be happy to stay with grandma

grandpa tousled katie's hair and smiled

bruce

lived far away katie made funny eyes at

orbee

she needed to talk with him privately

she told grandpa that

if it was okay with him she'd like to

play in the monkey bars

grandpa nodded and katie and orbee took

off

in a flash now

on the monkey bars they looked like they

were playing but

in fact they were deciding what to do

katie knew that they couldn't take away

grandpa's worries about bruce

but maybe they could take his mind off

of it

she said she knew orbee could be a big

help because

he was the silliest funniest person she

knew besides dad

and i tell you orbee knew exactly what

to do

now the first thing they tried was a

really

silly dance katie's spun orbee and he

turned so fast he looked like a spinning

top

then katie and orbee stuck pointed toes

out like

funny ballet dancers orbee flipped his

foot over

his head and did a really silly kind of

summersault

her grandpa chuckled as he watched and

when they were finished

katie plunked herself down beside

grandpa she put her hand on grandpa's

knee and asked him

what's pink and gray and has four

legs grandpa thought about it for a

moment

and then he told katie he had no idea

well katie got it is such a fit of

giggles

she could she couldn't speak

hearing her giggle grandpa giggle too

finally after laughing tears were

running down her face

she managed to say a hippo

sticking his tongue out katie

burst out laughing again as she laughed

so hard she rolled

right off the bench onto the gratz

grandpa laughed too

i'm not sure if he was laughing at her

riddle or at her laughter

well just when katie's cheeks were

hurting from laughing for so long

orbee jumped in and made it worse he had

used the colored chalk to draw a funny

face in his tummy

and when he wiggled so did his tubby

face

he did some jiggle tummy dancing and

that was just too much for katie

she climbed up on grandpa's lap he was

chuckling at orbeez

as she sat there and watched her

laughter and orbeez silly belly got to

grandpa a big time

he just roared with laughter

until tears were rolling down his face

too

finally orbee stopped his tummy was

getting rather

tired from jiggling grandpa turned to

his two friends and told them

they'd helped him a whole lot in two

ways

well katie and orbee were thrilled but

they weren't at all sure what the two

ways were

he motioned to orbee to come and sit in

the bench with him and katie

he put his arm around orbee too and he

told them that

their funny things had made him realize

that laughing makes you feel better when

you're sad

that made katie happy laughter was a

good thing

grandpa said even if you're sick

laughter is really good for you

so even though he was far away from

bruce he was going to send him laughter

to make him feel better

[Music]

well katie and orbee looked at grandpa

how could you send

laughter grandpa picked up the chalk

and took both her hands they would see

when they got home grandpa took some

really funny pictures of katie and orbee

doing silly dances

and close-ups of orbeez ridiculous tummy

then they sat down with grandma and her

brownies and red joke

every time a joke made everybody laugh

grandpa mocked it

there was a whole lot of laughter in the

house that day

oh and surprise brownie munching too

when grandpa and grandma went home they

borrowed the joke book

he sent the pictures to bruce and every

day he called him

and read him three of the funniest jokes

he could find

bruce laughed and laughed he even sent

katie and orbee a funny picture of

himself in the hospital

with a funny face painted on his night

shirt

i have to tell you that soon bruce

became well

it wasn't just because of the laughing

but the laughing

really helped from then on it became a

family tradition

whenever anyone was sick or sad the

others in the family

would be really silly or tell jokes

and maybe one day if someone in your

family is unhappy or not feeling well

you can try to do the same thing too

i happen to know that you can be

really silly too just like

katie and orbeez

did you know there are four different

seasons

spring summer fall and winter

in some parts of the world the change of

season means hot or

cold temperatures in other parts of the

world the weather goes from warm

to hot that just means you can go from a

small

fan to a really huge one

[Music]

it had been a day of excitement

katie found out that when you're looking

for rubber boots in spring

they're always under a whole lot of

things in the closet

orbee learned that even before the snow

disappears little purple

and yellow crocuses pop up and they both

discovered that

when the spring sun shines it makes you

feel like dancing outside

micah and his mother invited them to a

sugaring off party

shattering off meant collecting the sap

that comes from inside maple trees

to make sweet tasting syrup katie

and orbee couldn't wait when they pulled

out the long driveway

micah and his mom were standing by

spirit who was attached to a sleigh

after hugs biker's mom told him that

they were going to go to the sugaring

off party

on the sleigh this would be great fun

as they started to climb on micah asked

orbee if he wanted to ride up front

well orbee looked way up at that front

seat and

the red paint sparkled in the center

and he tooted a joyful yes a katy giggle

she thought harvey was brave for sitting

up there she was glad to sit between mom

and dad

as they traveled across the snowy fields

they saw blue jays and squirrels and

even a little fox katie and orbee and

micah

waved at the mall micah's mom asked if

orbee wanted to be the driver

or be nodded as he took the reins spirit

was careful to keep to the path

i have to say orbee was pretty thrilled

to be driving the sleigh

katie looked up and giggled and proud of

her best friend

pretty soon they arrived at a little log

cabin micah said was the sugar shack

a tall friendly fellow and a wool hat

came out and welcomed everybody

his name was francois and he gave

everybody a high five

he told them he'd be waiting when they

came back from the sap trail

francois said that they should look for

gray metal pails hanging on the trees

without the sleigh headed off into the

woods

micah's mom said this place was called a

sugar bush

katie thought that sounded pretty sweet

dad pretended that the sleigh was tilted

back so far

that he was going to fall out and

everybody laughed

soon katie shouted and pointed she'd

found the first pail

when the sleigh stopped micah and katie

left off

orbee left off too and landed hard in

the deep snow

he went right under and then popped up

with a pile of snow on his head

he giggled at the maple tree they lifted

up the

metal lid to look inside the pail it was

full of a liquid that looked like

golden water micah told them that this

was sap

he told the friends that the tree made

the sap

they tasted some grits from the spout

katie said

it tasted like water with a tiny bit of

sweetness in it

orbee wondered how it would become the

syrup he liked in his pancakes

micah unhooked the full pail and put the

empty one on the spout

then his mom and katie took the full

pail to the back of the sleigh

as they traveled along the trail they

found more pails and

everybody helped collect them at one

deep within the woods orbee leapt off

the driver's bench

and landed in such deep snow that only

his nose was sticking out

micah went to help but he sank him too

they pretended they couldn't get up and

laughed like funny snowmen

dad jumped off the sleigh the snow came

to the top of his legs

he waddled through it and took hold of

both orbeez

and micah's hands katie stood up in the

sleigh watching

dad pulled up hard but lost his balance

and fell

backwards into the snow both bombs were

laughing so hard

they had tears running down their faces

by now katie was laughing too

micah and orbee tugged on dad and he

came up

covered in snow

i don't think anyone stopped laughing

until they arrived back at the sugar

shack

and when they got there they sniffed and

founded a delicious

aroma filled the air in the shack

francois poured some of their yellow sap

into a long

shallow pan called an evaporator

evaporate means to take the water out

then he put the pan over the heat from a

big wood stove and as it boiled

katy and orbee saw the steam which was

made of water

rising from the pan francois stirred

as the sap slowly turned from the golden

liquid

to rich brown maple syrup francois who

had on great big oven mitts

lifted up the pan and poured out some of

the syrup

he left some in the pan and put it back

on the heat

orbee looked from one pan to the other

and wondered

what would happen to the rest francois

told him the first batch was syrup

this next batch on the stove was going

to be a treat

orbee was getting very anxious to find

out

just what that treat might be outside

francois

asked katie to give everyone a stick

then he did a

weird thing he scooped some of the

thickening steaming liquid

onto a clean snowbank orbee couldn't

believe it

was francois throwing away the sap that

they had collected

bad chuckled told them to hurry and roll

their sticks in the maple taffy

everybody rolled up the sticky stuff

while it was still hot

the snow cooled it down and made it

thick and gooey

orbee thought that was amazing all the

friends put the very sticky

maple taffy into their mouth it stuck to

their teeth

but it was the best taste in the world

it was

so good orbee got his hands stuck to his

forehead

and then to his knee i meant to his nose

he struggled so hard to get it unstuck

but he spun over to

spirit the little horse gave orbee a big

lick

and he came all unstuck i think spirit

really liked the maple flavor

of the little pink alien francois then

asked everybody to sit down at the table

he carried out a pile of pancakes and

some steaming hot sarah

he poured it all over the pancake

after the first bite everyone knew it

was the

best maple syrup ever well

they ate so many pancakes their tummies

were sore

dad micah and orbee groan they stayed

all afternoon and had snowball fights

and

made snow angels and francois thanked

them for coming to his

sugaring off party as they got ready to

head home

with katie driving the sleigh at the end

of the day katie announced that

it had been the lickiest stickiest most

delicious day ever

they all said thank you to the trees for

giving them a sweet treat

and katie and orbee both thought that

the trees might have waved goodbye

and i think if you had been there you

would have thought the

very same thing
