05x11 - Shannon / Grandma / Birds!

it had been a day with nothing much to

do

katie found out that dust bunnies

collecting hard to reach places

orbee learned that chance only wants to

play her games and

not dress up and they both discovered

that some days it's

hard to think of something new and

different to do

[Music]

kelly and orbeez sat on their front

steps it seemed like

all their friends were out of town or

busy

nobody was around to play with them

orbee felt a whole lot like playing

t-ball but two people were just not

enough

katie wanted to do some grass dancing

but they needed

three dancers so they sat unhappy and

bored on the steps

mom brought out some grape juice with

funny ice cubes in it

katie and orbee giggled and drank the

juice thanking mom with big smiles

mom suggested that they let some

completely

new ideas for fun come to their heads

well after she went into the house

that's exactly what they did they

decided

that any kind of fun that could happen

on that day would be

okay with them as they high-fived on it

a car drove into the driveway the two

purple mustached friends

stood up to see who it was kenny opened

the front door and told mom

somebody had arrived mom came out and

stood with him and then with a shriek of

joy

she raced to the car it was shannon's

mom

hooray she she wrapped her arms around

her in a big hug

katie and orbee raced over to give hugs

too

and when katie looked in the car for

shannon there was nothing there but a

big wicker trunk in the back seat katie

and orbee

peeked in through the door then there

was a loud click of a seat belt

and shannon jumped up as you can imagine

katie and orbee cheered shannon was

exactly what their day needed

well there was shouting and running and

hugging going around

in all directions it was quite an event

the two moms headed into the house orbee

went to close the car door for shannon

but she stopped him

the great big wicker trunk had to come

too

orbee stepped into the car he wanted to

be like that so

he gave the trunk a good yak

but the trunk stayed right where it was

orbee flipped over to the other side

and pushed it as hard as he could but

the trunk

still sat there he asked katie and

shannon to help him

they yanked on it as he pushed on it and

slowly the really heavy wicker trunk

inched across the seat to the edge orbee

told the girls to

stand back so he could show them how

strong he was

he flipped up over the trunk again and

from outside the car

he pulled the trunk thumb

down onto the ground katie was afraid

that something might have broken

but shannon said that there was nothing

inside that could break

the three friends tried to tug or lug it

up the driveway but

it was a heavy trunk and it wouldn't

budge

katie was going to run in and get mom

but shannon grabbed her arm she had

a better idea maybe they could take a

few things out and make it lighter

orbee looked at shannon she was so smart

shannon opened up the trunk and there

inside

were piles of beautiful costumes

her grandmother traveled the world and

sent home costumes for

every country she visited there were

sparkly ones and shiny ones and

costumes with great headdresses and

bright colors

even just lying there in the trunk they

were absolutely beautiful

shannon looked at orbee and decided that

he would be

a good arabian prince or be

like the sound of them shannon pulled

out a turban with a

great big decoration on the front she

plunked it on his head and she pulled

out a pair of white

poofy pants and a jewel belt

with a shoulder strap when he was

all dressed up orbee looked amazing

the jewels sparkled in the sunlight

katie couldn't wait to see what shannon

had for her in the wicker truck

she rummaged through the trunk and

pulled out

a saree from india it was the

most beautiful color

katie couldn't even begin to imagine how

you wore it

but shannon lifted katie's arms and

turned her around

soon katie was wrapped up in the sari

and the gold brocade gleamed in the sun

shannon then took out what looked like a

big jewel

and pulled a strip of paper off the back

of it the back was sticky

shannon stuck it onto katie's forehead

it was

a bendy and looked beautiful on katie

shannon looked at the costumes for a

moment and then

pulled out a spanish ladies outfit it

had a huge hair comb

that was supposed to stick up high

there was a long beautiful dress with

laces and

ribbons and a fan shannon told katie and

orbee

the weather was hot in spain so in the

olden days

ladies used to carry fan

when shannon flipped open the fan it

made an impressive noise

there were little holes in it that made

it very pretty

shannon hiked up her long dress and

grabbed the trunk

katie hiked up her sari and grabbed it

too orbee lifted from behind

now that they had taken things out of it

it was light enough to carry inside

the three costume friends and the wicker

trunk crossed the lawn

and went into the house

mom was very surprised to see three such

extraordinary people

shannon's mom smiled the friends told

them

they'd be back with a surprise

in katie's room they made up a story for

a player

they practiced it twice it was the story

of

an east indian woman who knew the secret

to opening a magic

chest full of coins and treasures an

arabian prince tried to open it and he

couldn't

so he got help from the woman the magic

spell had to be spoken

in spanish unfortunately the spanish

lady kept getting mixed up and the spell

kept doing the wrong thing orbee was

very funny every time

shannon did the spell wrong then finally

orbee the prince

at you sneezed and the trunk

opened wide the two moms laughed and

clapped their hands

they loved the plane when it was over

shannon asked her friends if they wanted

to do another and in a flash

they were back up in katie's room going

through shannon's magnificent costume

trunk

that day katie never did grass dance and

orbee

never played t-ball but they had a

whole lot of fun with shannon's costumes

and i just happen to know that

if you had been there you'd have had a

wonderful time too

[Music]

did you know all sorts of creatures live

together

in different kinds of groups a whole

bunch of geese are called a gaggle

fish travel in schools prairie dogs

live in towns and a family of wales is

called a pod

but i think your family is the very best

of

all

[Music]

it had been a day of baking

katie discovered that if you don't flour

the pan

the cake doesn't feel like coming out

orbee learned that even though you can't

see them

there are eggs hiding in a cake

and they both found out that if you put

icing on something warm

it slips off they were making a cake for

grandma because

she was coming to visit everybody was

very excited about

her arrival once grandma had settled in

they played a counting game

then grandma suggested making some dough

people

and painting them mom loved to do that

when she was a little girl

and katie and orbee couldn't wait to get

started

[Music]

as mom got the flower from the cupboard

the phone rang

it was jenny her neighbor she had a call

and had to go out right away she

wondered

if mom could possibly come over for two

hours and look after megan her baby

until she returned

mom hung up and explained the situation

usually when grandma was visiting

katie's mom stayed right with her but

this time

jenny was in need of help grandma gave

her daughter a kiss on the cheek

and told her it would be fine she and

the two friends would get busy and

show her their amazing dough people when

she returned

mom asked katie and orbee how they felt

about that as you can imagine

they were both excited about making

dough people with grandma

once mama had found a book to read while

baby megan slept

she was out the door grandma katie and

orbee all weighed goodbye

mom pointed to jenny's house saying

that's where she'd be

if grandma needed her katie and orbee

zipped back to the table and were very

keen to get started

orbee opened up the bag of flour as he

looked down the hall

grandma was walking into the kitchen but

it took her a little longer to get there

grandma opened up the cupboard door

because she needed to find a big bowl

for mixing

she looked through the things in the

cupboard but she didn't pull out a bowl

orbee popped around found one and pulled

it out for her

grandma thanked him she said she just

wasn't as good at finding things as she

used to be

she went to another cupboard to look for

salt which was a way up at the top

grandma reached but she couldn't quite

touch the box

she looked around for the stepping stool

but before she could shuffle it over to

the counter

orbee had flipped out of his chair and

used his suction cup fingers to

climb up the wall and remove the salt

was rather startled katie explained that

orbee did that

all the time for mom grandma smiled and

thanked orbee he was

definitely a huge help or be beamed

but i have to say that he had never

noticed before how slowly grandma

moved when grandma walked over to the

table and started to mix things together

orbee noticed it again mom would have

done it all in minutes but

grandma smiled and looked at the two

friends and added one thing at a time

when she went to get a measuring cup

full of water orbee looked at katie

but katie wasn't noticing anything at

all except she was looking at the pile

of flour and salt

[Music]

grandma had added a little oil to it and

it looked neat to katie

grandma shuffled back to the table with

the water and held it

over the flower in the bowl before

pouring it

orbee wondered why she took so long

soon katie had rolled up her sleeve and

the two friends were

elbows deep and dome they squooshed and

squeezed him

and soon the dough was ready grandma

gave them each a plate and on it they

shaped little people

orbee made a fat funny space alien and

katie made

a lady with a long dress they rolled and

squished and

squeezed their people into shape

grandma sat with them and made a silly

dough man herself

she told them it was best not to make

parts too thin

or narrow they would break off easily or

be noticed how very clever grandma was

even if she was sort of slow

once their dough people were in the oven

they decided to go outside

and get a little sun first grandma

carefully set the timer

then poured three glasses of apple juice

as she poured orbee again thought about

how slowly she did it

he left up and carried her glass and his

for her

and she was thrilled and told orbee he

was amazing

orbee and katie were at the far end of

the yard playing

grandma sat in a lounge chair sipping

her juice

as he slid under a bush like a fox orbee

asked katie

why was grandma doing things so slowly

katie smiled at orbee and told him

it was because she was no longer young

older people just needed

a little more time to do things than

younger people did

katie howled like a wolf in the orbee

shot out from the bush and over to a

tree and hid behind it

from her chair grandma watched them and

smiled

then the timer rang and up she got and

she went

soon she turned around to see a wolf and

a fox at the door

and she told them the doe people were

all ready to paint

katie and orbee left their imagination

animals outside

and shot him through the door

grandma headed upstairs to get the

paints orbee stopped her and told her

she should sit at the table and wait he

would get them he spun a pink blur and

was back with them before grandma sat

down

that night when the table was decorated

with colorful dough people and they all

had a delicious piece of cake

grandma mentioned she'd had a big day

she thought it was time for her to head

up to bed

and she thanked orbee for all his help

and headed up the stairs

moving slowly as mom katie and orbee did

dishes

he burbled to mom and asked why does

getting old make you move slower

mom told him as your body got older it

changed how you did some things your

bones and muscles were a bit weaker and

so it was

hard to move fast and you could still do

it but it just took

a little more time

when you were young it was important to

help older people out whenever you could

orbee burbled proudly

he had helped grandma all day

[Music]

and katie nodded it was true mom

told orbee she was very proud of him

and i hope if you can help out your

grandparents or friends who are older

that you will i know they will

really appreciate it

did you know there are many different

types of scientists

some study rocks others look at plants

a doctor is a kind of scientist so is

the weather person

she studies all of the changes in our

environment

so that she can tell us what the weather

will be like tomorrow

and whether it'll be a good day for kite

flying

it was a beautiful day for playing

outside

katie found out that when you blow on a

puffy dandelion

you help the plant spread its seeds

orbee learned that if you let go of your

picture on a windy day

the wind likes to play with it and they

both discovered

that birds love to fly with friends

[Music]

orbee was trying hard to finish his

drawing

when he saw a bright red bird fly into

the garden next door

just as it disappeared behind the hedge

katie came out with a jucicle for orbee

she spotted a beautiful yellow bird as

it flew right over the hedge too

as he slipped his ducycle orbee began to

wonder why all the birds weren't

visiting their garden

when he burbled this to katie she

shrugged her shoulders she didn't know

it was a mystery maybe they could be

bird detectives and find out

mom who was working in the garden told

them it was fine to do that

and when the two friends silently stood

between the houses

it was clear that the birds were all

landing in lucy's yard next

door lucy and her family had lived next

door for the last

several months he was very friendly and

she and mom

laughed a lot together as they tiptoed

along beside the house orbee noticed

a bright red bird sitting in the tree it

didn't swoop down but just sat and

watched whatever was going on in the

backyard

orbee burbled to katie that she'd better

get ready to solve the mystery as they

reach the corner of the house

but i have to say that neither katie nor

orbee was ready for the amazing sight

that came next

lucy's backyard was absolutely

full of birds they were all different

colors there were birds hopping about on

the ground

birds perched up on lots of feeding

stations and birds

splashing in the bird bath orbee raced

over to them

in a huge flattering of wings the bird

lifted off the ground and

all disappeared into the sky above

orbee was horrified he hadn't meant to

scare them

lucy who was feeling a little feeder

next to the house

turned to see what had happened she

welcomed the two bird detectives

orbee felt bad about scaring the birds

she looked up at the sky and told him

they'd be back once they realized

everything was all right

she asked katie and orbee if they knew

that the tiniest bird in the world

loved the color red and didn't eat bird

seed at all

the detectives shook their heads she

told katie and orbee that

the hummingbird lived on nectar from

flowers and loved her

made to order sugar water lucy held up

the hummingbird feeder

and asked orbee if he wanted to hang it

in the tree for her

well as you can imagine a streak of pink

he raced over to the tree and climbed up

to the hangar

as lucy reached up for the hummingbird

feeder orbee hooked it on

katie was pretty sure the hummingbirds

were watching because

right after lucy and arby moved away two

super fast hummingbirds hummed down to

the feeder

they were so tiny they

hung in the air pecking at the tube with

the red flower bottom

orbee thought he might like to have

those super fast flyers visit his house

sometime

too at that minute a brave bluebird flew

down

and took a good look at orbee and lucy

explained to the detectives that

this bird was a blue jay he was such a

grumpy bird that when he was at the

feeders other birds stayed away

the blue jay stuffed his cheeks with

seeds from the platform feeder and from

the ground

and flew off katie thought he sure

looked pretty and lucy did

too then another type of bird splashed

down in the birdbath or be whispered

that

he knew this one was a robin lucy nodded

orbee was a very clever bird detective

and he felt pretty good about that

suddenly in a flurry of wings at least

20 birds swooped down and landed in the

garden

it was very exciting

[Music]

katie asked lucy why so many birds came

to her backyard

and she smiled she thought of her

backyard as being

the very best bird restaurant in town

she told katie and orbee

she made sure to have lots of different

kinds of bird seed for

all the different birds she worked hard

to feed them

just what they wanted like a restaurant

lucy told the friends that the yellow

birds were american gold finches

as they watched the bird sheep told them

that the goldfinches didn't like anybody

to take their place at the platform

feeder

they were very fussy and picked and

picked through the seeds

throwing most of them on the ground when

they found one that they liked

they ate it right up orbee looked up

the red bird was still sitting in the

tree just then

some beautiful pink ones landed on

another platform

lucy whispered that these were morning

doves

and they had the saddest songs of any

bird detective katie pointed out that

they were bigger than the rest

lucy told her that she had a very good

eye for birds

and that made her feel proud detective

orbee

was very puzzled about something he

asked lucy

why the beautiful red bird in the tree

just sat and watched

lucy pointed out that orbee was a good

observer that meant someone who noticed

everything

the red bird was a cardinal this was a

boy bird and was actually a very shy

sword

cardinals always travel as couples you

know in twos

and only ate when all the other birds

were gone

orbee was amazed and didn't even notice

two hummingbirds

zipping past his nose katie wondered

where the cardinals partner was lucy

pointed to a branch

much higher up the tree there sat a

similar bird

but not as brightly colored as the boy

lucy explained that almost all female or

girl birds are a dollar color so they

can hide and

keep safe in the nest with their babies

well they learned about birds all

morning which lucy told their friends

was called

a really funny word ornithology

that meant the study of birds

with delight katie and orbee decided

that they wouldn't be detectives anymore

they'd be ornithologists just like lucy

and you can be one too

if you want to be i bet you can get to

know and understand

all sorts of birds they sure have a lot

of things to show you

just like they showed katie and orbee
