05x07 - A Scary Story / John the Music Man / Orbie the Grouch

[Music]

it had been an evening of rough and

tumble with tom the babysitter

orbee found out that when tom lift you

up like an airplane with his feet in

your tummy

it can really tickle katie discovered

that if you laugh too long you get a

funny feeling on the side of your

stomach

and they all learn that if you're

creative

you can have just as much fun tidying up

as you had making the mess they were in

their pajamas

and all ready for tom when he came

upstairs

he told a friend that they could have a

story from a book

or he could make up a funny spooky one

well immediately katie declared she

wanted a funny spooky one

a really spooky one

even though tom's stories were always a

lot of fun orbee

wasn't quite so sure then katie told him

it would just be silly and not that

scary so

he agreed he wanted to be as grown up as

katie about

scary stories tom told the story of the

giant green marshmallow man

everything he touched turned into soft

gooey green marshmallow then people

all over town got stuck to marshmallow

park benches

swings bikes cars and all sorts of

other stuff the only way to get unstuck

was to say the word

marshmallow backwards three times

tom made all kinds of funny noises and

actions to go with the story

he asked katie and orbee to help too and

together they made

funny faces and also made the soft

swishing

sound of the marshmallow man when he

walked

each one of them tried to say

marshmallow backwards i can tell you

[Music]

there was lots of laughter streaming out

of the bedroom that night

when it was finally time to turn out the

lights the giggles didn't stop

katie tried and so did orvie but every

time they thought of tom's funny faces

and noises

they both started giggling all over

again

as katie lay on her bed her head filled

with the pictures of the green

marshmallow man

at first it made her giggle but then

when she was

almost asleep the green marshmallow man

started to look scary

very scary katie sat right up in her bed

and shook her head she was trying to get

that picture out of her thoughts

she could tell that orbee was asleep and

she could hear the soft sounds of the

television downstairs

now i have to say that katie knew tom

had just made him up she knew it

but her imagination didn't seem to

she could hear orbee sleeping in the

cloth she could hear the television

downstairs

but then she heard

something else it was a soft kind of

noise that could actually be made by

marshmallows rubbing together

when the marshmallow man walked this

time she put the pillow over her head

she thought nice thoughts of playing

hide and seek with orbee outside

he was hiding as she was trying to find

him she knew orbee was behind the bush

just as she was about to look on the

other side of the bush

a huge marshmallow man jumped up in her

dream and she shouted

help well katie woke up right away

her call for help had awakened her and

had awakened orbee too

in the darkness orbee hurried over to

her and for one scary moment

she thought he was the green marshmallow

man turned pink but when he burbled her

name

katie relaxed it really was orbee

in a whisper she told orbee all about

her bad dream with the marshmallow man

corby gave katie a big hug and told her

there was no such thing

he told katie that he would sit on the

bed until she found a happy dream and

fell asleep

he would make sure that no marshmallow

man

even if he didn't exist would come near

her

well katie felt so much better with

orbee there that

she rolled right over pulled the covers

up and within seconds

was fast asleep orbee sat there thinking

about the

silly green marshmallow man chuckled

quietly

to himself it was really funny

he looked at katie and realized that she

was sound asleep

so with a huge yawn

he made his way over to the closet

he heard katie sleeping in the soft

noises of the television downstairs

he was just nodding off when he realized

that he heard something else too

something that sounded like

marshmallows rubbing together with a

fast flip orbee jumped down and raced

over to katie's bed he jumped in and

surprised katie white awake

she yelled and orb yelled because she

did and they both grabbed each other

then tom opened the door and flooded the

room with light

katie and orbee felt better right away

tom asked what was wrong orbee burbled

what had happened

[Music]

tom told him that the marshmallow man

didn't exist

the two friends nodded their heads they

knew that

katie explained that there was a noise

that shouted a whole lot like

marshmallow man in the room orbee added

especially when the lights were out so

tom turned the lights out and sat with

them

and they all listened in the dark they

all heard the television

and each other breathing but there was

nothing else

for a moment then

the noise started again

tom slid off the bed and headed over to

the toy box

there was a crack of light shining

through the door so katie and orbee who

were clutching each other

could still see him

with a meow sound the noise stopped

tom had found their marshmallow man

he turned on the light and in his arms

was

a very sleepy chance

tom explained that chance had been

purring their imaginations had made the

purring

sound like the marshmallows katie and

orbee who were feeling much better

relaxed they'd been afraid of something

that usually made them feel very safe

the sound of chances purring

that night they slept soundly and had

one happy dream

after another

[Music]

and i hope that if you are ever afraid

of something in the night

you'll find out exactly what it is then

you will feel better about it

that way you can get a really good sleep

and i know that you'll have some

very sweet dreams

[Music]

did you know fog is just like clouds

that have come down for a visit fog can

be wispy

or very thick when the air is kind of

warm

and the ground is cool you see fog all

around

you'll see fog but you won't see much

else

[Music]

it had been a day of noises

katie found out that when the drum beats

in a song

it's fun to make your body bop at the

same time

orbee found out that if you listen to a

tap drip

it goes slow and fast

and chance discovered that the whistle

on the kettle makes the cat

want to be in another room

the whole family was in the car

traveling out into the country to meet

dad's old friend

john dad always called him john the

music man

and katie and orbee wondered why that

said when they got to john's

they'd find out john lived in the

country so it took a little while to get

there when they finally arrived

katie and orbee were delighted to see

that john lived on a farm

wasn't exactly the same as vikas because

john had rabbits and chickens and cows

katie and orbee couldn't believe their

eyes when they saw them all

john was very glad to have the family

come for a visit

he was a little older than dad taller

and skinnier too

he had big round glasses that perch

right on the end of his nose

and after visiting with the animals dad

told john that katie and orbee were

curious as to

why he called john the music man

well john smiled a big

proud smile and he told them that they

would have to follow him to find out

he surprised the friends by heading to

an old building around the back

instead of heading into the house orbee

was sure the building was for animals

but when they walked in

both he and his best friend stood stock

still they could not believe their eyes

there were piles and piles of junk

things people just didn't use anymore

some of the piles

were higher than katie and orbee they

they giggled junk didn't make you a

music man

[Music]

john asked the two friends to come to

the back of the room

they tiptoed their way around all the

odd things stored in the building

and came to a workshop area katie and

orbee were astonished

john had made all kinds of interesting

instruments

from junk or we thought it would be fun

to play

john said he was hoping that they'd feel

that way

he picked up a string instrument made

out of a chinese tea can the neck of a

hockey stick and an old soup bone

john told him was based on a dulcimer an

appalachian instrument with a whole tone

scale

orbeez scratched his head katie looked

toward mom for help

then john laughed and explained the

great thing about this instrument was

that

it was difficult to make even one sour

note

katie and orbee liked that idea because

playing instruments

it's a really hard thing to do john

played a few notes

katie and orbee loved the sound and

danced around the junk filled room

then john picked up another instrument

that he'd made with a wooden box for a

body he played this one too and

it had a whole different sound it

sounded clunky and less

tinny than the tin can instrument dad

said the sound was more mellow

well it wasn't long before in the back

of john's junk room

he and dad played some amazing music

mom and katie and orbee moved to the

crazy music

after orbee danced and bopped to the

music

he asked if he could try to play the

instrument john put his down and stood

up

he hoped orbee would ask katie said that

she'd like to play an instrument too

john said he had some little instruments

just the right size for the two friends

i can tell you they were pretty happy to

hear that

he showed them a wall with all kinds of

homemade instruments on it

there were so many that at first the

little ones were hard to find

but then katie noticed one with a pink

tin

and orbee spotted one made from an

old-fashioned orange box

john told them to keep looking until

they found just the right one for each

of them

katie and orbee walked along the wall

and looked carefully

orbited when he came across one he liked

it had an old chocolate chip cookie tin

for the base orbee loved chocolate chip

cookies

john took it down for orbee and showed

him how to strum it

orbee bopped around the junk piles as he

strummed and plinked

and suddenly he realized he couldn't see

mom and dad

katie heard his music and followed it

and she found him

on the other side of an old crate and

led the way back

orbee strummed and plinked along while

katie searched for an instrument to play

and finally at the very end of the wall

katie

found one made from an old-fashioned hat

box

she liked it right away john left

a big musical laugh he had expected she

wanted the hat box

he showed katie how to strum and he

started making some beautiful music too

mom turned a huge dog food cam upside

down

and played percussion that meant that

she kept the beat

they played all together john said that

they were jamming

jamming was the word musicians used for

having fun making

music together katie and orbee loved

jamming they would have stayed all day

and night soon it was time to go

the friends were very excited when john

said that they could keep their

instruments

and take them home and still hopping and

bopping they headed for the door katie

stopped and turned around

she asked john what he called his

instruments

john wiggled his glasses he hadn't

thought of a name

maybe maybe a thingamajig

john said he'd think on it and with hugs

and thanks

the family headed for the car dad

shouted at the car and

they were all waving goodbye when katie

asked him to stop

she and orbee got out of the car and

raced up to john

they had the perfect name for the

instruments

when john leaned over and asked what

name they'd come up with so quickly

katie giggled and sorted orbee

they told him it was stringham a jig

well john john left

a beautiful musical lahav and said that

was the best name

ever music always reminded them of john

and i have to tell you that on recycling

days when they found good items for

music making things in their box

they saved them for john even though

they were junk to everybody else

john would make beautiful instruments

just right for german

i know that you remember john and how he

could make something

special out of old junk perhaps one day

you'll do the very same thing and i know

that whatever you try

you'll make it into something beautiful

[Music]

did you know there's a lot you can do to

help your dad in the workshop

you can be the one who hands over the

nails screws

and tools just make sure you hit

the real nail

not a fingernail

[Music]

it had been a day of things going wrong

katie found out that you can't go very

far when your sweater is caught on the

dresser drawer

or we learned that when you race around

the bed

you should keep your feet away from the

bed legs or your toes could get hurt

and they both discovered that as much as

you love your best friend

it's no fun to slam right into them

actually bumping into katy and stubbing

his toe

had started aubry's day off on the wrong

foot he felt a little

a little bit crabby grouchy and not at

all like being very nice

now feeling crabby didn't happen to

orbee very often and it really bothered

him

in fact i have to tell you everything

really bothered orbeez

when he was in a grouchy mood

it was late afternoon katie was playing

dress-up and putting makeup on as she

sat in her bed

orbee wanted to play by himself so he

was laying out a huge airport

on the floor orbee had trucks and planes

and

little people all over the floor he was

flying planes up in the air and

around the room over katie's head and

down to the airport again

and because orbee was feeling grouchy

playing alone was a good idea

and that's why when the next thing

happened orbee was so upset

you see katie was dressed in a long

sparkly dress

with a big floppy hat she was putting

lipstick on her lips with the help of a

little mirror from her flashy purse

with lipstick on katie turned around and

jumped

off the bed she jumped off the bed

and right onto one of orbeez planes

actually katie did hurt her foot but

worse than that

the wing fell right off the plane

orbee who was over by the winter turned

to see what had happened

he looked at katie and although it

didn't make any sense

to ever do it to your best friend

he shouted at her he burbled in a loud

and angry voice that she had broken his

plane

and now he didn't like her very much

anymore

katie holding her foot felt bad about

the plane she was so surprised that

orbeez reaction though she hadn't meant

to break it

he was so furious katie felt

awful she said she was sorry and

ran right out of the room and orbit was

so angry

he chased katie down the hall yelling

that he was going to tell

mom and dad at the bottom of the stairs

katie ran right into there dad caught

her and

asked her what was wrong orbee turned

and

charged right back into katie's room and

slammed the door

now i'm sure the minute orbee was in her

room he realized

he'd done the wrong thing but i have to

tell you right here he did nothing about

it nothing at all

he just picked up his broken plane and

looked at it

the wing had come right off he was so

angry

he stamped his feet on the floor he was

really angry

and then he began to cry i should say

that

every now and then a toy gets broken and

when orbee is himself

he handles a broken toy like anyone else

and when someone else says they're sorry

orbee accepts the apology like anyone

else however today

he was so grouchy he just couldn't

strangely orbee didn't even like the

plane all that much

when dad heard all the stamping upstairs

he took katie by the hand and went up

katie didn't really want to go because

orbee was so angry

but dad said it was all right they

opened the door to find orbee

leaning on katie's bed crying dad said

his name

orbee shrugged his shoulders

he felt uncomfortable i think it was

because

he knew somewhere inside of him that he

had

not acted appropriately

when dad asked them to explain what had

happened

orbee saw katie's little chin quiver as

she explained it

she had on the long dress and hadn't

seen the plane when she jumped off the

bed

again she told orbee how sorry she was

obi looked at the plane he felt like

saying

it was his very favorite and katie

should never have jumped off the bed

when she knew all the planes were down

there instead he threw the plane on the

bed started to cry some more

katie was finding it hard to feel sorry

for orbee

because he had been so mean to her

[Music]

but it was never good to see a friend

cry she patted his shoulder

dad was a little annoyed with orbee for

being so mean or be

sniffled dad asked if katie had

apologized

[Music]

or be nodded his head then dad asked if

he thought katie

meant to jump on top of his plane orbeez

shook his head

he knew she hadn't meant to do it dad

sat down carefully in the middle of the

airport and asked katie and orbee to sit

with him

he told orbee good friends take care of

each other

and it had been smart of orbee to know

he was too cranky

to play with anyone today but when an

accident happens

it's important to put the inside brakes

on

or be burbled that he didn't have any

inside breaks

dad lifted his head up and looked right

into his eyes

everybody has inside breaks in their

head

and their heart to put them on you have

to stop

and think ask yourself

if the other person wanted to make you

feel angry

or did the person just make a mistake

and the real reason you feel so angry is

because

you're grouchy if it's because you're

grouchy

then you have to put on your inside

breaks

then take a minute and count

all the way up to five at five you look

at the person and say

it's okay i know you didn't mean to do

it

the strangest thing will happen all of a

sudden you'll feel better

[Music]

you'll feel better because you didn't

make

anyone feel bad because of your grouchy

mood

orbeez smile he took katie's hand

counted to five and burbled

it's okay i know that you didn't mean to

do it

orbee could feel his brakes working the

grouchiness was being replaced by

a thought katie was his very best friend

on the whole planet

and at last she was smiling

and guess what katie was thinking the

very

same thing orbee asked that katie

felt like taking a plane ride and the

two were friends again

so i hope if you ever wake up grouchy

you'll remember your inside breaks

and count to five you will be

amazed how much better you feel

all your friends and family will be

really

proud
