04x10 - Big City / Market / The Chocolate Factory

it had been a day of cars and horns and

people

katie discovered that in a big city the

noises of the street go on all night

orbee discovered that in a big city you

have to ride up in an elevator to get

home

and they both learned that visiting

granny and granddad

was like going to a whole new world

katie and her family were visiting

granny and granddad

it was very exciting because their big

city neighborhood

was nothing like katie and orbeez they

hugged and played and visited granny and

granddad all day and now they were going

to do something very special

the whole family was going to see a play

katie put on her dress and her shiny

shoes then helped orbee with his little

bow tie

granddad smiled at them and said they

both look very spiffy and sophisticated

in the hall katie and orbee raced to

push the button for the elevator

orbee got there first and he pushed the

down button

when the elevator came everybody got

into it

katie pushed the zero button zero was

the button for the ground floor

orbee was a little worried by the

elevator ride so he held onto katie's

hand

she gave it a little squeeze and he felt

better

at the bottom of the ride they stepped

out of the elevator a man in a fancy

suit and hat said

good evening and held open the outside

door

granny introduced katie and orbee to him

he smiled and said

his name was mendelssohn the dormer as

he shook their hand

katie and orbee felt very grown up to be

meeting such an

important person outside katie asked

where the car was

granddad looked down at her and told her

that in the big city there was another

way to get around that was much faster

than a car

kitty and orbeez stopped in their tracks

were they

taking a plane to the play grand had

laughed and told them

that they were taking a train

well orbeez spun around fast and verbal

that

trains were the best and he couldn't

wait he made his funny train sound and

made everybody laugh

dad caught him just before he bumped

into an elderly lady

walking two little dogs he told orbee

that the special thing about this train

was

that it was underground orbee just

couldn't imagine

anything so amazing as riding in a train

right underneath a city

katie was having very different feelings

about it she held tightly to granddad's

hand and told them she was afraid

orbee was puzzled how could anybody be

afraid of a train

he whispered to granddad that she

thought the big city was

too heavy to be on top of a train

dad looked at granddad when he was a

little boy

he had thought the same thing he told

katie that

engineers were very clever people they

designed the underground trains

they made the train tunnels so strong

that the city was not too heavy at all

mom told her she would be perfectly safe

and katie felt better

but i had to say she was still a little

nervous

they came to some stairs right beside a

big store

and granny told him this was the place

for the train

orbee said he thought there would be a

station granny told him that the station

was underground in her city they called

the underground train

a subway as they walked down the stairs

people

rushed past them katie held on to

granddad

and granny and orbee held onto mom and

dad's hand

it was important in the big city to stay

close to each other

at the bottom of the stairs they came to

an escalator

people were hurrying on and hurrying off

orbee was so excited

at the bottom there were tracks on

either side of a long

platform along each track was a yellow

line

it ran all the way down to where there

was a tunnel

the tunnels were at each end of each

track the track went into them and

disappeared

katie felt afraid she couldn't help

thinking of the big city up above her

dad crouched down beside katie he showed

her the yellow line dad told her

that it was to keep people safe no one

was to step over the yellow line until

the doors of the train opened

dad pointed out that the people who

built the subway were very concerned

that all of their passengers were kept

safe

katie smiled at dad that made her happy

and she did feel a little more relaxed

all of a sudden there was a rumble orbee

became

very excited in a flashing train

shot out of the tunnel and roared to a

stop right in front of the family

granddad felt katie's hand tightened he

gently squeezed hers back

he told her that the fun part was about

to begin

the doors of the train opened people

hurried out and then people hurried in

katie's family stepped in

and found that inside it didn't look

exactly like the trains above ground

it looked sort of like a bus inside

mom helped katie into her seat but orbee

preferred to stand up

and hold on to the pole as they all sat

down a whistle

sounded and the doors closed

with a little jerk the train moved

out of the station it got dark outside

as the train went into the tunnel

occasionally there were lights going by

orbee was having a

great ride as his feet lifted off the

floor

inside the train car people were reading

and talking and snoozing

katie could see that they were all very

relaxed and at last

she started to relax too orbee was

talking a

mile a minute about how fast the train

was going and where were they now

dad just couldn't keep up with him it

made katie giggle

the giggle grew and soon it became a

laugh of delight and

it was great fun to be on a train

under the city after two stops they

arrived at their destination

when they tried to get up and get ready

to get off the train was going so fast

they could barely move forward

by this time both katie and orbee were

laughing so hard

that other people in the tree laughed

too or be grabbed onto a pole it was

just in time

the train screeched to a stop an orbeez

spun around the pole to the other side

when the doors opened they all held

hands and scooted off to the theater

[Music]

they had a wonderful time at the theater

that night

but the thing they remembered most was

their very first ever

subway train ride they told mendelssohn

all about it when they got back to

granny and grandad's apartment

and i'm sure if you ever get to ride a

subway one day

you'll remember it too it's a lot

of fun

did you know did you know did you know

did you know you could make the outdoors

even more colorful with colored chalk

you can draw pretty pictures on the

sidewalk and driveway

or you can play hopscotch with your

friends

but if it's your very best drawing ever

you better take a photograph

because the colors wash away when the

rain comes

[Music]

it was a crisp winter day

katie discovered that sometimes cold air

sneaks into the house around the window

or be found out that watching snowflakes

fall can make you feel sleepy

and they both learned that when the snow

is deep cats

jump from place to place instead of

walking

at lunchtime katie and orbee were

sipping soup as mom and dad discussed

the rest of the day

mom had some reading to do for work

dad said he'd come up with the most

perfect way for the rest of them to

spend the afternoon

katie and orbee looked at him dad stood

up and announced

they were going down to the farmer's

market

maybe katie and orbee would find

something special to buy

this was an excellent idea but katie

mentioned to dad that

the farmers weren't growing very many

things right now

snow was covering their fields

dad pulled their snowsuits and coats out

of the closet

they would go down and see what was

happening at the farmers market

in the middle of winter or we imagined

the market in the summer

what would all that food do under the

snow katie wondered

if that was where you buy frozen peas

as they drove into the parking lot katie

and orbee realized that the farmers

market in winter

looked a whole lot different than in the

summer in the fall

there were lights strung around the

stalls and on this snowy day they looked

magical but first all they came to sold

wreaths

and swags for your front door they were

made of evergreen branches

and were decorated with gray big ribbons

and bows katie remembered this stall

sold great mounds of vegetables in the

summer

dad thought he'd buy a wreath for a

necklace

everyone laughed

in the stall next to them an old man

sold maple syrup

in the summer this stall sold fresh

fruit katie and orbee looked at the

containers

[Music]

and picked the prettiest one from mom

after all she was at home reading and

they were having all the fun

dad handed the man some money as they

moved on they came to things made out of

wood

there were birdhouses small shelves and

little boxes there was even a huge box

on the ground

it was for storing sweaters in the

winter

in the summer katie and orbee had bought

a birdhouse from the man

he remembered them and shook hands with

dan

the boxers were all beautiful but katie

and obi felt that

they weren't quite right for them to buy

or be tugged on katie's jacket they had

to keep hunting

a booth with pretty centerpieces for the

dining room table was next

they were made with dried flowers and

sparkly things

you were supposed to put them on the

table to make it look special

katie reminded aubry they sold fresh

flowers in the summer

[Music]

soon they're at the door to the inside

stall

and they could smell hot chocolate and

dad thought

this would be a perfect treat for the

shoppers as they walked inside the warm

air washed right over them

dad found them a table and the waitress

brought them

three huge mugs of hot chocolate with

whipped cream

piled on the top dad took a drink of hot

chocolate

when he put the mug down he had a great

big dollop of whipped cream

at the end of his nose well

katie and orbee couldn't help but laugh

dad pretended

he didn't know what was so funny and

some of the children at the other tables

were laughing too

and finally katie took her napkin and

wiped the cream off of dad's nose

one thing about dad he was always so

silly

when they were finished dad headed them

toward the indoor stalls

these were the ones that were the same

in summer and winter

or so katie and orbee thought it was

grown-up stuff and

they were sure that they wouldn't find

any children's things in there

dad told them good hunters never give up

the first doll they came to sold all

kinds of colorful stones

they found a jewelry stall one where

they sold

handmade paper and another that had all

kinds of

knitted things orbee thought these were

all wonderful but

was there anything new and fun for them

to buy

katie felt the same way too so when dad

pretended to walk right up to the next

stall

katie and orbee grabbed him and pulled

him back there on the table

were all kinds of handmade toys

trucks and tops and puzzles and

dollhouse furniture

and stacking toys for babies all ready

for new homes

orbee burbled that everything was

fabulous

then katie noticed something wonderful

puppets

puppets sitting up on the puppet holder

the old man told katie and orbee that

the puppets were his very most favorite

thing to make

he only sold them to people who would

love them as much as he did

katie and orbee knew who could do that

it was hard not to touch them they did a

great job

then the kindly old man leaned forward

and asked dad

if it would be all right if they tried

the puppets

the thing about a puppet was it had to

feel like it came alive on your hand

or it wasn't the right one

dad agreed both katie and orbee picked

up a puppet

orbeez was a very friendly looking

dragon

and katie's was a a fairy with big

wings and a magic wand immediately

a story started happening in their hands

and katie and her best friend

began to play the puppets were

beautifully made

and worked really well dad said that if

they would love them and look after them

they could each have a puppet

neither friend could believe their ears

they hugged their puppets and they said

yes

the man gave them a little shoebox to

put them in he was very happy to send

them off to a good home where

they would be loved he said goodbye to

each of his puppets

and wish them all well katie and

orbee couldn't wait to get home and show

mom

mom loved her maple syrup

and after supper the two friends put on

a show

it was about two puppets that were born

in a market stall and knew

everything the winter farmers market

sold mom and dad loved it

and katie and orbee loved their puppets

they never forgot the wonderful day they

had at the farmers market

and i hope one day you'll get to go to a

farmer's market too

and maybe find something there that's

special for you because i know

you really deserve it

way to learn about our planet

it shows where all the countries are

where lots of rivers lead to

and just how far north is the north pole

find a globe and see if you can see

where you live

pretty tricky isn't it

it had been a day of getting ready

katie discovered that when you keep

putting change in your piggy bank

eventually it becomes a whole lot of

coins

[Music]

orbee found out that when you don't have

any pockets

change is hard to carry and they both

learned

that if you put your money together it

can add up to a big number

when dad called that it was time to go

katie and orbee squealed with delight

they jingled all the way down the stairs

they were excited

because today they were going to visit

the chocolate factory in the car orbee

wondered

how chocolate got made at a factory he

imagined that there would be

hundreds of stoves with cooks standing

over them

katie thought it was strange that

chocolate was made in a factory because

it was the food after all cars and

machines were made in factories

as they drove up katy and orbee strained

against their seat belts to see

it looked like an ordinary factory but

as soon as the two friends jumped out of

the car

they could tell this one was definitely

different

in the air there was the most delicious

chocolate smell before they entered the

factory dad said

he hoped they didn't have his all-time

favorite a chirpy chocolate bar

if they did he was in trouble because

when he saw one of those he just had to

have it he'd never

stick to his diet as they stepped in

dad asked katie and orbee to take a look

for him

[Music]

there were no chirpy chocolate bars only

a very nice lady who said her name was

rey

she showed the family where to start the

tour and hope they'd enjoy themselves

dad checked with ray to see if they had

any chirpy chocolate bars on the tour

ray grinned and she told him he would

have to take his chances which meant

that there might be

he made everybody promise not to let him

see them

as they climbed the stairs the wall

turned to glass on one side

[Music]

orbee peered through the glass and saw a

big silver round thing

[Music]

a mechanical arm was moving all around

it and inside it looked like chocolate

only

it was soft like a pudding or be tooted

for his family to come and see

mom explained that the round thing was a

vat

a that was a gigantic pot that was too

big to lift or carry

it sat on the floor

katie wanted to know how you stirred the

pot and mom pointed to the huge

mechanical arm

going around and threw it she told them

that that was stirring the pot a man on

the floor was checking a huge

thermometer

mom told the friends that he was

checking the temperature

to make sure the chocolate stayed soft

when they cooled it

it would turn hard as they walked down

the corridor they came to another

section

there was a long thin belt that moved

chocolate bars along

under machines and in front of people

everyone had gloves hair nets and masks

on

they touched and turned the chocolate

bars to make sure they were all right

once in a while a person would take one

of the bars off the belt

dad explained that after he was assured

that there were no chirpy bars on the

belt

that these people were inspectors their

job was to check that the chocolate bars

were the right size and shape

and that nothing was wrong with them or

they wondered if the people got to eat

the broken ones

but mom check her head when you work on

a food line you have to be careful about

hygiene

by keeping yourself and everything else

clean

you can't eat or drink there are very

strict rules so

that there's no chance of germs getting

into the food and making the customers

sick

katie was impressed they were obviously

very important people next they came to

another room where they could see a belt

carrying chocolate bar a machine

nodded down over them and they came out

wrapped

a lady turned them all over and looked

at the bottom of it

her hands moved fast to catch them all

as he was checking

that the wrapping was sealed bottles

chugged like a train along the line on

the next room

yummy looking chocolate syrup was poured

into each one

and then further down a machine put caps

on the bottles

katie and orbee looked at each other

they

loved chocolate syrup soon they were at

the end of the window

orbee had learned that they didn't need

a whole bunch of stoves

katie had learned that the machines in

the chocolate factory were only for

making chocolate

as they climbed down the stairs orbee

burbled that he thought

it would be fun to swim in the vat of

chocolate

dad thinking about swimming and

chocolate he was so busy laughing

he wasn't prepared for what he saw when

he got to the bottom of the stairs

there right in front of him was a whole

case full of

chirpy chocolate bars katie tried to

cover his eyes but she was too short

orbee tried to stand in front of them so

dad wouldn't see them but he was too

short

dad said oh no

and then headed right for them mom took

him away and reminded him

and he was on a diet but dad spun around

and went back

he he pretended to cry because he wanted

one so badly

mom gave him a kiss and told him that he

was dieting and

couldn't have one katie and orbee looked

at all the other candies and filled

a little basket full of treats dad

picked up a basket too

but mom kissed him on the cheek and said

no

katie and obi brought their treats to

the cashier and counted out their change

dad looked back at the case full of

chirpy bars

he showed them his basket and how empty

it was

orbee and katie felt sad for dad but mom

winked at them

katie and orbee giggled the head

whimpered

out in the car dad pretended to be

really

unhappy then mom told him that he had

been so

amazing that she had brought him

something special

she pulled out a tiny chirpy bar

they had grabbed her and gave her a big

smooch on the cheek

on the way home they all munched happily

on their treats

katie wondered how other factories ran

and mom said that one day

they'd visit another dad added that he

really hoped that the next one

wouldn't sell chirpy bars

visiting a factory and seeing how things

are done is really

interesting perhaps one day you'll get

to visit one

and if you do i know you'll learn lots

of interesting things

and have lots of fun just like

katie and orbee
