04x06 - The Snake in the Grass / Sprite / Homegrown Supper

[Music]

it had been a windy day at the cottage

katie found out that if you leave her

air mattress on the lawn the wind will

sweep it up and away

orbee found out that if you're swimming

the wind wants you to go in a certain

direction

and they both discovered that a boat

pulls hard on this rope to break free on

a windy day

[Music]

after lunch orbee decided that they

should play dress-up

they hunted through the huge old costume

box

katie found a long flowing dress that

looked like fun

orbee found a tuxedo top

that make him feel like a maestro who

conducts an orchestra and at the bottom

of the box katie found some long

colorful ribbons they were too thick to

wear in your hair

and too long to wrap around you mom who

was in the middle of cooking a yummy

stew for dinner looked at the ribbons

and told katie that she imagined that

the ribbons were for dancing

[Music]

in an instant katie was in the living

room spinning with the ribbons in her

hand

and having a great time and right at

that moment orbee looked out the window

and noticed that the flag on the boat

was flapping in the wind

he looked at katie's bright twirling

ribbons and tweeted that

he had a fabulous idea

[Music]

katie stopped dancing and looked at

orbee orbee burbled that

he would conduct the wind and katie

would dance with it

he placed the tape player by the window

and pushed play

[Music]

in a streak of flashing ribbons and a

flurry of coattails the two friends

charged outside orbee stood on some big

blocks and conducted with a stick and

they

they they had a ball when katie jumped

the wind held out her long dress and

blew her ribbons in wavy lines that and

mom

watched from the window as orbee waved

his stick baton his coattails flew out

behind him

mom and dad decided this had to be

recorded in the photograph

as dad clicked the camera katie leapt up

high

but as katie landed something

weird happened everyone could tell by

her face that she'd

stepped on something a bit strange

and when katie screamed jumped and ran

toward the cottage

everybody knew something was

very wrong dad grabbed her up as he

rounded the corridor

katie was sobbing and pointing and

barely a word came out

and dad walked toward the place where

katie had stepped katie climbed up

higher in his arms

begging him to stop well of course

dad stopped he didn't want to scare

katie

he placed katie on top of the picnic

table

orbee climbed up beside her mom came out

with a drink to help calm

katie down and the whole family waited

to hear what it was

katie finally whispered the word

snake orbee was horrified

[Music]

mum relaxed and dad went over to take a

look

katie and orbee were a bit afraid that

the snake would eat dead hole

but instead dad crouched down and looked

at the snake

it was still lying in the grass i think

the snake was

as afraid of katie as katie was of the

snake

and i have to say that i'm pretty sure

the snake was feeling

a little sick from being jumped on

dad told katie the snake was going to be

fine

immediately katie wanted mom to carry

her into the house she would never come

out again if there was a bad snake in

the garden

dad left the snake and walked back to

katie and orbin he sat on the bench of

the picnic table

and told the two friends that although

there

are dangerous snakes this one

was a garden snake he was very useful to

have in the garden and he helped mum

with the flowers

[Music]

well both katie and orbee were surprised

that a snake would help

mom but mom agreed

the snake certainly did he eats the bugs

that try to k*ll my plants

and he's a very polite visitor

he slithers through the garden without

knocking over a thing everything is

just the way i planted it she explained

or be burbled

it was very nice of him to do that

that explained that there are dangerous

snakes but not where they live

he also told katie and orbee that you

should

never touch one of nature's special

creatures

because they like it best that way

there was no problem for katie because

she would never touch a snake in 900

years

dad asked if she had noticed how pretty

the snake was and katie shook her head

all she knew was that she'd stepped on

something squishy and it moved

dad got a stick and he asked katie

if he could show her the snake he would

keep it

far away from her she could just take

a look at him and see that he wasn't

ugly or scary or anything

he added that the snake was just one of

mom's garden assistants

like dad this made katie and orbee

laughs

that didn't look like a snake at all

katie nodded her head it was always hard

to

feel afraid when dad was silly

dad slid the stick under the snake and

the snake coiled his tail around him

and slowly dad carried the stick over to

the picnic table

katie held on to mom and so did orbee

but as dad brought the snake closer

orbee was surprised to see his bright

green and yellow colors

katie you noticed that he had a pattern

on him too

the snake didn't try to hurt anybody it

just

hung on the stick wondering what was up

it had the teeniest tiniest tongue that

was split in two

it shot in and out of his mouth

as katie and orbee were having a really

good look at the snake

it looked right up at katy i think it

was trying to tell her that

he was sorry he was underfoot katie told

him that she was sorry that she'd

stepped on him

i'm not exactly sure but i think the

snake

might have smiled and i do know for sure

that katie did from that day on katie

wasn't afraid of garden snakes

whenever she saw the snake sliding

through mom's garden she always said

thank you for helping mom and although

i'm not sure he understood what she said

i'm sure he understood that he was

welcome to the garden

and to help with the bugs i hope that

you never step on the snake

but if you ever find one i hope you'll

appreciate that

he is doing his job to make all of

nature

beautiful just for you

did you know

[Music]

did you know there are lots of things

you can do outside on a winter's day

hockey ice skating skiing

and tobogganing winter can be lots of

fun

outside playing with your friends but

when you all get too tired

just fall back and make snow angels

it had been a day of excitement

katie discovered that if you sleep over

at micah's you better be ready to wake

up early with the rooster

orbee learned that eggs come from

chickens

and they both found out that there are a

lot of things to do on micah's farm

first thing in the morning

[Applause]

it was early spring the three friends

tugged on

great big gum boots and jackets orbee

wondered

why they had to wear big rubbery gum

boots when all the snow was gone

but he found out soon enough one step

out into the barnyard and the ground was

soft and

squishy with spring in the barn spirit

was happy to see the friends and

nibble on the fresh hay micah put in her

stall

while katie was patting spirit she

noticed his spirit looked

rounded and fatter and micah

explained that she looked like that

because she was going to have

a foe orbee wondered what that meant

and micah threw his arms open and he

explained it meant that she was going to

have

a baby baby horses are called foals

katie looked at spirit's wide tummy and

couldn't imagine a whole horse being in

there

micah filled pails of feed each friend

carried a pail out to the chicken coop

it was noisy in there and when the

friends walked in

they were surrounded in chicken in about

two seconds

katie giggled

and micah told them to throw the feed

for the chickens

they were very hungry they were big

chickens and little chickens

little baby chicks micah told them it

was the baby time of year for animals on

the farm

katie and orbee thought that the little

tiny chicks were cute

when they tossed the feet out over the

chickens they raced around

squawking and pecking the ground one

chicken pecked the tip of orbee's toe

and he jumped

and then so did the chicken

they all giggled as orbeez that he might

like to feed the chickens from the fence

just as he threw the next handful of

chicken feed

spirit let out an awful noise from the

barn

and micah stood up straight he told

katie and orbee it was time

and he raced into the house to get his

mom katie and orbee raced behind him

but they didn't know what time it was

and as soon as they were inside

micah grabbed some old towels and his

mum called the

veterinarian the animal doctor

katie began to cry because she thought

that something awful was wrong with

spirit orbee gave her a big hug but

micah's mom knelt down beside her

and said it was something wonderful not

something awful

katie wiped her tears away as she tried

to understand

what could be wonderful about a

situation that made spirit cry

micah's mum left to her feet and hurried

out the door calling

it's time for the new baby

[Music]

with that katie and orbee looked at

micah who smiled broadly

he told them that spirit had been making

the baby all winter

soon they would have two horses katie

squealed with delight and grabbed micah

that was one of the most exciting things

she'd ever heard

katie and orbee wanted to know how they

could help

micah told him that the vet said that

the one really good way of helping was

to keep out of the way spirit was going

to have to work hard and

to be a little uncomfortable and it was

best if only a few people tended to her

as soon as the fall is born he told them

they could visit spirit

at that moment a jeep rolled up in the

driveway and the vet leapt out and ran

into the bar

micah explained that the vet was going

to help spirit and make sure the baby

was born safely

[Music]

micah katie and orbee sat in the house

and did some puzzles and then played a

game of checkers

micah's mom came in a few times to tell

them that

spirit was doing a fine job

everyone took turns peeking out the

window

but there was nothing to see except the

barn and the sunlight

[Music]

katie wondered where the baby horse

would live and micah told them that the

foal would live with his mommy spirit

for a while

orbee wondered how spirit would carry

her baby when she

didn't really have any hands micah told

them that

mommy horse didn't need to carry the

baby

all of a sudden micah katie and orbee

heard micah's mom calling for them

to come to the barn quick

while three people never jumped into

their gum boots so fast

and in a pink blooper they were out the

door

[Music]

the barn was hot and steamy when the

friends walked in

the vet smiled at them and signaled for

them to be very quiet

they tiptoed over to spirit's stall

spirit was lying on the ground and

behind her

was a little tiny pony

[Music]

it looked more like legs than a horse

spirit got up quickly and looked at her

pony

the pony lifted its head and then

untangled its legs and tried to stand up

too

at first it it tumbled and landed on its

nose and

then although it was wobbly the little

pony stood up

everybody was happy but nobody shouted

or cheered because

it would be easy to scare the little

pony

right away it stumbled over to its mom

and nuzzled spirit's underbelly it was

soon

drinking its mother's milk kitty thought

it was very smart of the little foal to

know where to go for a snack the vet

turned to micah and asked what name he

had chosen for the full

and micah smiled he had a good one the

little fall would be named

sprite katie liked that the name was

almost like its mommy's

orbee liked the sound of it and my

collected because his mom told

him sprite meant a little elf

as the vet put all his equipment away he

told micah that he thought

sprite was a perfect name for the new

fall

i think spirit liked it too because she

went and plugged her head up and down

the friend spent a lot of time that day

visiting spirit and her baby

and i think the spirit was happy to have

him sprite seemed happy too if he

finally figured out how his legs worked

it was a very exciting day that night on

the phone

katie and orbee told mom and dad all

about the fall

the day sprite was born was a very

special day for them

and do you know if you had been there it

would have been a

very special day for you too

[Music]

did you know

did you know a great place to be on a

rainy day

is a museum i bet in your town

you can find all kinds of museums

art science nature and children's

museums

the best thing is you never know what

you're gonna see

[Music]

it had been a creative day

katie discovered you could make a

beautiful mobile

with the end of summer flowers

orbee found out that if you mix blue and

yellow paint together

it makes the color green all by itself

and they both learned that if you press

a leaf in a book

it takes more than five minutes to make

it flat

the friends were just tidying up when

mom mentioned that she felt like being

creative too

orbee wondered if she was going to do a

painting and katie wondered

if she was going to glue some flowers

but mom smiled

and said i'm going to roast a chicken

kitty and orbee looked at each other

that didn't sound very creative to them

mom told them the fun part was anything

they'd eat with the meal

had to come from the garden

katie and orbee looked out the back

window and then at each other

there wasn't much in the garden that

looked like supper

mom brought out gardening gloves some

little spades and a big basket

then out to the backyard they went

in the backyard katie and orbee waited

and wondered

what mom would think looked like dinner

then katie sprang to life i see

something she shouted out

and with gloves waving she raced for a

plump

red tomato growing on the big tomato

plant

orbee looked to see what she was looking

at and ran with her to give her a hand

mom told katie to check that the tomato

was plump and round

orbee looked all around it and nodded it

was

katie waited for mom to cut it off but

as she put her hand on it

the tomato began to fall

orbee caught it and he and katie placed

it in the basket

mom told them that so far they were

having chicken

and a tomato for supper orbee spotted

some leaves tied to a stick and he

noticed that some

yellow things were hanging down from the

branches and with a toot

will be raced over to the plant and

asked if

[Music]

these were yellow squeaky beans and mom

agreed that they were

and in a flash katie and orbee had

pulled up

several beans and piled them in the

basket mom told them that now dinner was

chicken a tomato and yellow squeaky

beans

at the very same moment katie and orbee

noticed some green spiky leaf

sh**ting up out of the garden orbee

thought that maybe these were

green spring onions but mom surprised

him by pulling on the leaves and there

on the bottom

was a big fat onion there were two

others and katie and orbee each

pulled one out

[Music]

orbeez was big and fat and katie's was

small and longer shaped

mom said that both would be delicious

mom told them now that

dinner was chicken a tomato yellow

squeaky beans

and onions then it was starting to sound

really good

[Music]

katie and orbee placed the onions in the

basket

mama asked what else could they eat

[Music]

well they didn't have to look too hard

because orbee who was trying to crouch

down stepped on something that was a

little hard

he thought he'd broken a plant but what

he discovered was something kind of

yellow onto the ground

mom told him to dig a bit he took out

his fade and

literally popped up a really dirty

potato

it wasn't big but it was a potato

nonetheless

katie clapped her hand orbee felt very

clever

mom told them to dig around the bottom

of the potato plants

to see if there were any more they found

seven potatoes all together and one was

a

big fat one katie and orbee decided

that one would be for dad

katie and orbee piled the really dirty

potatoes into the basket they had to be

careful of the tomato because

as you well know tomatoes squish

mom told them that now dinner was

chicken

a tomato yellow squeaky beans onions

and really dirty potatoes

the basket was pretty full mom and orbee

were trying to decide if they had enough

for a delicious dinner

when katie who was kind of onto the

what's hidden under the ground

idea saw something

she scratched around a very feathery

leafy kind of plant

and found something orange

mama and orbee decided one more thing

would be perfect

just as katie told them she had found

one more thing

mom looked and agreed that she had

indeed found something

that would be perfect to finish off the

dinner she grabbed the leafy part of the

plant

and pulled it straight up and up came a

bright orange and also very dirty

carrot katie and orbee shouted hooray

both sent into pulling the carrots up

out of the ground

and soon there were five big fat ones

and three skinny ones

they now had chicken a tomato

yellow squeaky beans onions really dirty

potatoes and

some really dirty carrots too the basket

was completely full

mom pointed out that they were amazing

farmers

once inside mom washed up and put the

chicken in the oven

katie and orbee stood in the stool and

washed all the really dirty vegetables

and even the ones that didn't look dirty

soon the vegetables sat

clean and yummy looking in a great big

bowl on the kitchen table

dad came in and saw the beautiful bowl

of vegetables

he could smell the chicken cooking he

looked at his three favorite farmers

and told him that he would be the

vegetable chopper

[Music]

he chopped the vegetables and made them

ready for cooking

mom prepared the pots and katie and

orbee set the table

[Music]

they decorated the table with a vase

full of all the leaves from the

vegetables

orbee thought it looked quite amazing at

supper

dad tasted one of everything he even

tested the squeaky beans to

make sure they squeaked on his teeth as

he chewed

then he raised his glass he told the

family that

this was possibly the very best dinner

he had

ever eaten in his whole life he clinked

glasses with katie

orbee and mom and told them that this

was a toast

to their home-grown supper they had

several more homegrown suppers until all

the vegetables ran out and

fall began to take over katie was sad

when the garden was done

but she also was excited to see what

would be in the garden next year

i hope one day you'll discover the fun

of having a home-grown

supper too i imagine your garden will

grow the most

amazing vegetables and i'm quite sure

that you will make a terrific
