The Cat and the Puppy

It was a beautiful morning in the

countryside. and Connie and Patch were

having a picnic.

Come on, Patch, let's go and play with

the ball before we have our food.

If we do some exercise first, we'll be

hungrier afterwards. Okay!

While Connie and Patch were playing with

the ball, Dodger the Cat came strolling

by. Ah, that cake

smells delicious. I'd like to eat it all

myself, and afterwards I could have a

nice little nap in the shade. Hatch and

Connie had no idea what Dodger was

planning. Then Connie hit the ball very

hard.

Well, never mind. While Connie goes and

gets the ball back, I think I'll go and

have a little bit of cake.

Oh, hello, Dodger. Hello, Patch. So this

enormous cake is yours, isn't it?I hope

you're not planning to eat any of it.

Well, yes. I was going to have a little

bit late now. Oh, Patch, I wouldn't do

that if I were you. You've got pimples on

your face, and cake will make them even

bigger. Is that true, Dodger?Have I

really got pimples?Yes, you've got

lots of them. The very worst thing you

can do if you've got pimples is to eat

cake.

Oh, dear. If you want, you can have the

cake instead, I suppose. Why thank you

Patch

Hey Patch what are you doing?Come on we

haven't finished playing I can't play

anymore Connie because I've got pimples

What are you talking about?

I've got lots and lots of them but I

can't see any I'm

going to find somewhere to hide so that

nobody can see all these pimplesOh, look

silly.

And Patch went and hid in a big bush. Hey

Patch, come out, there's no need to hide.

Poor Patch. He thought everyone was

laughing at him for having pimples.

Honestly, you look the same as usual.

Hello, Patch. Hello, Connie. How nice to

see the pair of you. It's not nice to

see me, because I've got lots of pimples.

I can't see any pimples, Patch. Hey,

would you like some of these blackberries?

Oh, yes, please, Tom. We love

blackberries. You can have as many as you

like.

Mmm. Mmm. They're really good. Well, I'm

not going to eat any blackberries. I'm

too upset about my pimples to eat

anything. Poor Pat. He needs to

eat to keep his strength up. I'd better

find something tasty for him.

Down at the river, the frog was having

fun in his little boat. In the woods, the

butterflies were fluttering around

happily, looking for beautiful flowers

with tasty nectar.

Meanwhile, Connie went to look for the

sweetest cherries she could find to take

to her friend Patch. The ants helped

Connie pick the fruit.

Patch won't be able to resist all these

delicious cherries. When he eats them,

I'm sure he'll feel a lot better.

Connie took the cherries to Patch. Wow,

what a lot of cherries. They look so big

and juicy, I bet they're too scrumptious.

Well, I picked them especially for you,

Patch. Hooray, hooray! They're all for

me.

What's the matter?Why don't you eat them?

But what if the chillies give me even

more pimples,

ehOh, Patch, you don't have pimples, and

cherries are very good for you.

Hi, hello everybody. Hi there Wally.

Ooh, those cherries look scrummy. Can I

have one?Yes, if you like. I don't

mind if you eat them all.

Right.

Thanks Patch, those cherries were

fantastic.

You see Patch, you should be like Wally

and eat plenty of food. I'm not

eating till my pimples have gone.

Come on, let's go and see my grandma.

What for, Connie?Because I think she'll

be able to help you. She'll help me keep

my pimples.

Hatch and Connie were on their way to

Grandma's house when all of a sudden...

Hello, anybody there? That's my grandma, I

wonder what's the matter?

What happened, Grandma? The wind has blown

this tree over and I can't get out of my

house. Could you two manage to push it

out of the way?I'm sure we can move it,

Grandma. I'm

worn out already. You haven't

got any strength because you haven't been

eating. So Patch went and ate two of the

apples from the tree.

He felt so much stronger that he pushed

the tree out of the way, all by himself.

Well done, Patch. Bravo, you're a very

strong puppy. Yes, but I've got pimples.

Now, Patch, listen to me. You don't have

pimples, so stop worrying about it.

ohh But Dodger told me I had pimples so I

gave him my fruitcake. Oh Now I

understand Dodger was playing a trick on

you. He wanted the cake for himself. So

he said you had pimples

Oh My tummy feels very funny.

I'm here Dodger and tell me what's the

better?Oh Dear

I ate that big fruitcake all on my own

and now my tummy feels very funny.

Oh I'm sorry Dodger, but you shouldn't

have eaten so much cakeDon't worry,

Dodger, I know what you need to make your

tummy feel better. Now why did you tell

Patch he had pimples? It's wrong to trick

your friends so you can have their

things. Yes, and it's much better to

share a cake than to eat it all on your

own. Everybody knows that.

Yes, you see, it isn't good to eat too

much, and it isn't good to eat too little

either.

Connie's grandma was very kind, and she

made some herbal tea to make Dodger's

stomach better again. And he learned his

lesson, and he promised to give up his

tricks. I won't play any more tricks, I

promise, Clara.

Where's the food?

It was a beautiful summer morning, and

all the animals for miles around were

having a wonderful time,

especially the fish. who were playing in

the cool water of the river.

Patch and Connie had got up very early to

enjoy the sunshine. They were looking

forward to playing out in the woods.

It's my turn to throw the stick now,

Connie.

Off you go!

Patch and Connie were having fun, but

somebody was hiding in a bush nearby.

Just then, some ants went past, taking

cherries to their nest.

Hello, Patch. Hello, Connie. Hello,

ants. Would you like to play this game

with us?It's lots of fun. Oh, yes,

please, Connie. We'd love to play with

you. You throw the stick and we'll catch

it.

And while the ants ran to get the stick,

someone looked at the cherries they'd

left behind.

When the ants came back, one of them said

in surprise,Oh, no! Our cherries

have gone!

Oh! Look at that! Somebody's running off

through the woods! I know what's

happened. They've taken our cherries so

they can eat them themselves. Oh! Don't

worry. I'm sure it's a mistake. We'll

tell them to bring them back. Come on,

Patch! Patch and Connie set off to

find out who had taken the cherries, but

although they looked high and low, they

couldn't find them anywhere.

Just then, Connie saw two playful little

squirrels who were hopping by with acorns

in their paws. Hello, squirrels. Would

you like to play at hopping with Pax and

me?The squirrels thought it was a

wonderful idea. Ohh

So Connie and the squirrels started to

play, hopping here and hopping there.

They were having such fun that Patch came

to join in.

What's the matter, Squirrel? Why have you

stopped playing?Where are those

acorns that we were carrying?They've

disappeared. Oh no,

somebody took the ants' cherries. I bet

the same person has taken your acorns. We

have to find them, Patch. Look, Connie,

it's very late. And it'll be dark soon.

We should be getting home. You're right,

Patch, but we'll have to carry on looking

tomorrow.

And soon the sun set and

night fell. Before she

went to sleep, Connie thought that they

really must solve the mystery the next

day. And early next morning,

Patch came to wake her up.

Connie, time to wake up!

The two friends walked into the woods.

They were determined to find the food

that had disappeared.

I bet whoever it was just took the food

by mistake. We just have to explain. Yes,

we'll sort it out. Nearby, Wally

was looking very sad. Look, it's Wally.

Hello, Wally. What's the matter?

I had an apple, but now I can't find it

anywhere. Oh, maybe it's part of the

mystery we're trying to solve. I don't

know about that. I just want my apple

back now. I know. I've

had an idea. I know what we can do.

Hatch and Connie went to visit Connie's

grandma and asked her very nicely to

make them one of her tasty cakes. She

baked a delicious fruitcake.

That cake smells delicious, Connie. Are

we going to eat it for breakfast? No,

we're going to leave it out in the open.

Then we'll wait nearby and watch what

happens. Oh, what a good idea.

Let's go and hide.

Hatch and Connie left the cake out in the

meadow.

And very soon, Cyril the wolf came

by.

Cyril took the cake.

I think we've solved the mystery. Wait,

let's follow him.

Ohh Patch and Connie followed afterCyril.

I'll bet this cake tastes delicious.

Hey,

Cyril, what are you doing with our cake?

HmmIf you'd

asked, we'd have given you some. Oh no,

Connie. Cyril doesn't want any cake. He's

only been trying to help me. I hurt my

poor, you see, and I can't get out to get

food for myself, so he's been bringing me

things to eat. Yes, I wasn't taking the

food for myself. It's all for Sam.

But Cyril, you can't just take other

people's food, you have to ask them

first. I know, but I'm very shy,

and I was much too embarrassed to ask.

There was no need to be embarrassed. Your

friends are always happy to help you. I'm

sorry, Connie. From now on, I promise

I'll always ask when I need something. Do

you know what, Cyril?I think it would be

best if we gave all this food back to its

owners. Just then, all the animals whose

food Cyril had taken arrived. Hello,

everyone. We followed you here. And

we heard what you were saying. We want to

help Sam, too, and we think he should

keep all the food he needs. The

animals were very pleased that they could

help Sam. And Cyril never took anybody's

food without asking ever again. That

night, before she went to sleep, Connie

was happy. She and Patch had solved the

mystery of the disappearing food, and all

her friends had been able to help Sam.

Sweet dreams, Connie.

Animals and their jobs.

It was a lovely spring morning

and Hatch and Connie had decided to go

down and swim in the river.

The water spider was skating around

happily. When Patch and Connie

arrived, they splashed about in the

water. When we finish

swimming, what game are we going to play?

Let's find out about the jobs that the

animals in the woods do. Yes, that game

sounds like fun. Let's do that!

So Connie and Patch set out to look for

animals and find out what jobs they did.

Nearby, they met their friend Todd, the

mole. Hello there, Todd. I'm ever so

glad that we met you. How are you?I'm

very well. What are you two doing today?

Well, we know that you're always busy,

Todd, and we want to know what job you

do. I'm a miner. I dig holes in the

ground. It's the best job in the world.

What's this?And with that, Todd

started to make a long tunnel through the

earth.

Well, how about that?Did you see how

quickly I can dig? That was very good,

Todd. I think you're the best miner in

the woods. Patch and

Connie were very pleased. They'd found

out what the mole's job was, and they

were looking forward to finding out more.

Who should they meet next, but Bertha the

Bee?

Playing round the top of a tree.

Oh. Hello there, Bertha. Hello, Bertha.

You look very busy. Do you have a job?Of

course. We bees make honey just like the

honey in the jar down there.

That honey looks yummy. I wish that I was

a bee. Why?So that you could make

honey?

No, so I could eat it.

Patch and Connie walked on through the

woods. They saw the birds flying over the

mountains and the fish jumping

happily in the river. It

wasn't long before they bumped into

Norbert the beaver. Hello Mr. Beaver.

Hello my friends, what brings you round

here? We're playing a game, finding out

what jobs you all do. Well I'm a

carpenter I chop up trees to build my dam

How about that?Wow that's amazing Mr.

Beaver You're very good at cutting wood

Oh pay no attention to him I'm the best

carpenter in the woods Just look what I

can do

Oh you're very good at making holes Mr.

Woodpecker I admit that he's not all that

bad but I'm still the best Oh what

nonsense you talk I'm the bestThere's no

need to argue about it, you're both very

good at different things Yes, the

woodpecker chops down please, and the

beaver makes horns Nearly Patch, but it's

the other way round

Patch thought for a while, and then asked

Connie a question But if everybody in the

woods has a job, what are our jobs?Ooh,

that's a very good question Patch, I

wonder what our jobs could be?Look

Connie, there's your grandma. Let's go

and ask her what her jobs are. She's sure

to know.

Grandma was planting a flower when Patch

and Connie arrived. Hello Granny, we've

got a question. Hello you two, what do

you want to know? We're finding out about

the different jobs that animals do. What

a nice game, it sounds like lots of fun.

And do you know what job a cow does,

Connie? That was our question. We know

about other animals' dogs, but not about

our own. Well, Connie, a cow's job is to

make milk, and then the milk can be used

to make things like cheese and tasty

yoghurts. Making milk is a very

important job. I think I'm going to like

it. Oh, I'm sorry, I have to go. I've got

a cake in the oven and I must take it out

before it burns. Bye-bye, you two.

Oh, everybody's got a job except for me!

Come on, Patch. I'm sure you've got a job

as well. No, it's not true. You're only

saying that.

But two friends were sad because Patch

thought he didn't have a job. Then

suddenly Patch stopped. Oh! I

think I can smell something burning near

by, Connie. Your nose is better than

mine. I can't smell anything at all.

I think something's on fire and it's over

there. Ooh Fire! Fire!

Fire! There's a

fire! Fire!

A pile of logs have caught fire,

the flames are getting bigger, somebody

put it out! But the woodland

animals were so afraid that they all ran

away.

There it is, it's only a little fire but

if you don't put it out it might spread

and then the whole wood could burn down.

If we could cover it up with something,

the fire would go out. Look, that rock

over there would do. Hooray!

Hooray!

Well done Patch, it was thanks to you we

put out the fire and now I know what your

job is. Oh really? What is it

Connie?What's my job?You saved the

forest, so that means you're a forest

ranger. A forest ranger looking after the

forest?I like that. I think you two have

another job as well. Oh, another job?

What do you mean, Tom?Well... You're

firefighters! Hey, it's true! We put out

the fire, so we're firefighters!

Firefighters?Good! I like that job too!

That night, as she went to sleep, Connie

thought that everybody has a special

talent, and they can use it to help

others. Sweet dreams, Connie.
