Ashley is bringing her dog Nikki to visit us.

She said Nikki likes treats, so I got her one.

Nikki used to chase ba*ls when she was a puppy,

but she's getting older now.

I have lot of supplies.

- And she's just what you wanted.

She has big brown eyes and her name is Daisy.

she's beautiful.

And she's going to make someone a wonderful pet.

Someone with a barn and a big field of sweet grass

for her to munch on.

- Oh, I guess our backyard doesn't have enough grass.

- I don't think my mom's gonna go for it, Dooley.

- Now Dooley, M.A.R.T.I.E.,

pets can be wonderful loving friends,

but we need to be very careful when we choose one.

- Sometimes people choose a pet just 'cause it's cute.

And then they find out it's way too much work.

- Or they're not old enough yet to take care of it.

- That's right.

So before bringing a pet home, we need to make sure

that we can take care of it each and every day.

- I know we need to be responsible.

I would truly Dooley take care of Daisy,

but she wouldn't be happy living in our backyard.

I want her to have lots of sweet grass to eat.

- She likes carrots too.

- Marchin' martians, sure!

- Oh my gears and rivets, she likes 'em.

Today I met Ashley's dog, Nikki.

She's older and doesn't play much anymore,

but she's still cuddly on a cold night.

She's a great pet,

but a big pet like a pony is not for everyone.

Dr. Arvid helped us understand that you need to be careful

and choose a pet that you can really take care of.

Any pet is a big responsibility,

animals need us and they trust us to be kind and caring.
