today their jobs include emergency

rescue patrolling our borders and

fun and games let's find out right now

morning Pete Barnett good morning Janet

tell us how does the Coast Guard help in

protecting the environment the Coast

Guard has a uh a group of people that

are specially trained in environmental

protection uh these people go out and

inspect ships to make sure they don't

pollute the oceans they also clean up

any kind of hazardous material uh spills

or accidents do you help in protecting

marine wildlife yeah we sure do the

Coast Guard helps enforce all the laws

that protect the marine mammals at sea

such as dolphins and whales and corpuses

and we also uh protect species of fish

that uh the government has protected

because there aren't many left of them

how do you rescue people the Coast Guard

has a lot of specially trained people

and a lot of equipment to uh to help

people and to rescue them at sea we have

uh many different kinds of boats we have

helicopters jets and we have special

kind of equipment wow tell us what does

SOS stand for sos is a special code it

means save our ship and if a uh ship is

in any kind of trouble and they transmit

that code SOS every ship and aircraft in

the area tunes in and starts to search

for that boat i know the Coast Guard

teaches people about boating safety what

are some of the things kids can do when

they are on a boat to make it safe and

fun first of all they should learn how

to swim that's pretty important when you

get out on a boat the kids should also

wear a life jacket make sure it's the

life jacket's worn properly and make

sure it fits also when you get on a boat

the kids should know how to use a radio

have a radio on board and make sure you

know how to use it in case you have to

call for help and also know how to steer

the boat and turn it off in case of an

emergency how can we learn more about

boating safety if anybody wants to learn

about boating safety just call your

local Coastg Guard office and they can

help you out finding out all the

regulations and all the safety tips i

know that the Coast Guard uses flags to

communicate to other ships can you tell

us a bit about that sure we have a

special system of flags and each flag is

a different shape and color and these

flags stand for either letters numbers

or special words behind us we have some

flags here I brought with me from one of

our ships uh this first flag here stands

for U you can see the color pattern this

flag back here the second one stands for

S this flag here stands for C and this

flag back here stands for G wow the US

Coast Guard huh there you go there you

go do you need any special training to

be in the Coast Guard no actually if you

want to join the Coast Guard the best

thing you can do is to finish high

school and get good grades stay

physically fit stay in shape and then go

down the recruiter and join up and from

there on the Coast Guard will train you

about it all the time first of all it's

the biggest state in the continental US
