scared of the dark so I leave a light on

found a way of dealing with your fear

Well the only way I can live with my

fear of alligators is to avoid them

That's a very good solution too And it

also might help you to learn more about

Today our own Janet Bates is going to

interview a man who has chosen some very

difficult animals to work with His name

is Jill Sylvester and he trains

alligators for commercials TV and movies

He's brought one to the studio and boy

has that little alligator let everyone

know that she's here Jules thank you so

much for joining us here today My

pleasure Well first of all how can you

tell an alligator from a crocodile let

me show

you Come on Daisy

Daisy as an alligator she has a shorter

nose whereas a crocodile has a much

longer nose So how long is this one this

one's about 2 feet Oh and how long do

they get well this one being a female

she'll probably reach 8 to 9 ft Now the

males get anything up to 14 15 maybe

even 16 ft Wow that's like three times

my size Yeah Do they have ears yeah they

do actually They're sort of right in

here

Can they hear us and understand us uh

they don't understand us but they hear

us real well How do you get the big ones

to work on the movies um it's not so

much training as we actually call them

by a lot of meat They like meat and it

has to be nice and warm They like when

it's warm too Do you catch them no we

breed our own Yeah they breed every year

How many do you have we have a dozen Wow

So you treat them all nicely don't you

absolutely If you don't treat an

alligator nicely he won't treat you very

nicely Where do you keep them we have a

a big mud puddle pond like a swamp and

they all live in there So tell us what

do we do if we accidentally come across

a crocodile or an alligator well if the

crocodile is in front of you you run

that way Very fast Well thank you for

coming and teaching us so much about
