fascinating fact is that the first

professional baseball team the

Cincinnati Red Stockings began to pay

its players in 1869 they won 91 of their

first 92 games number four little league

teams were only for boys until the 1970s

when girls won the right to join them

number three the fastest base runner

ever is Ernest Swanson in 1931 he

circled the bases in 13.3 seconds number

two Ricky Henderson holds the world

record for the most stolen bases with an

amazing

1,215 and the number one most

fascinating fact is that the Chicago

White Sox played the longest major

league ball game ever 8 hours 6 minutes

the incredible Brett Butler with us

today brett has had a remarkable career

as a professional baseball player and

right now on question time our colleague

Mim Paley is going to ask him all about

it thank you Tiffany and Sergio and

thank you Brett for joining us thanks

for having me now what happened to your

eye well I guess I'm supposed to catch

the ball but we were practicing in the

outfield and you're supposed to watch

the hitter and I wasn't and he hit a

line drive and it hit me in the eye and

I had to get three stitches so that's

kind of uh what happens sometimes our

research department says that you're a

really great baseball player what is the

secret to your success well I think the

key to success is to work on your

weaknesses because if you can perfect

your weaknesses then the good things

that you do will also take off and then

you'll be able to do good all the way

through and so a lot of practice a lot

of hard work and believing in yourself

well what advice do you have for kids

who want to play sports well I I think I

would give you the same advice that my

father gave me and that is if if you

don't believe in yourself nobody else

will if you have a dream or you have a

desire or goal go out there and do the

very best that you can and if you make

it you can be satisfied but if you don't

make it you can be content and say you

know what it just wasn't supposed to

happen that's what I would the advice

I'd give when you were a kid were you

the best in your neighborhood uh no i

was the worst or at least they thought I

was the worst i was the smallest on the

team i was the last one picked i was

always too little i was told I couldn't

do it but I had a secret in my heart i

believed I could play so like I said

earlier you have to believe in yourself

and not let anybody tell you you can't

do it go out there and do it well I

tried to were you ever discouraged there

were times where I got discouraged my

father always said "Hey be the first one

there be the last one to leave do all

that you possibly can let them see you

there and practice practice makes

perfect everybody knows that you

survived a very serious illness cancer

what did you learn from that well I

think one thing I've learned is if I go

back when I was a little boy I remember

we used to make fun of people who

something happened to them maybe if they

went through chemotherapy and they lost

their hair that was our way of being

able to share with them but we didn't

think about their feelings and I think

as a little boy or a little girl what we

have to do is we have to think about the

feelings of the people who are going

through the illnesses so what we have to

do is show them what kind of friends we

are put our arms around them tell them

we love them and help them through the

situation and sometimes it means just

sitting there and trying to be kind well
