Alma: No, what contest? Becka: It's a song writing contest for kids. And you‘ll never believe who's helping to pick the winner.

I spent a lot of time here, learning to write songs and working on my music. And now, I want to hear your songs.

Mami: Mmm-hmm! What's your song gonna be about? Alma: Ummm I got nothin. You?

Eddie: Unnh... Nothin. Mami: Ya know, sometimes when I'm looking for a song idea, I walk around and record sounds.

So, Eddie and I wrote our song about all the things that make us happy in Puerto Rico.

My name is Xavian, also known as “XO Wavy.” And we're going to show you how to write a song our way!

Well I have been rapping since I was two, but I have been songwriting since I was four. I am nine.

I've been rapping for, um, six years. Like, me, dancing is what led me to being a rapper because

there was a lot of rappers in my community at the time. So I started rapping, I made a cringey song

about like my lifestyle. My uncle is also a rapper and my dad does poetry. So I started rapping with my uncle and my dad's friend like,

see what they could do and I would try to like also rap. I started writing songs for my dad.

He used to write his songs and he would recite his songs and I would sometimes say it back to him.

HETEP: What should we write about? XAVIAN: Honestly, I'm going to start off introducing myself. I am Xavian, XO Wavy.

HETEP: I'll start off like ‘in the Bronx is where my style evolved' Oh, I think I know what I'm going to say about the weather.

Say what you got so far. ‘In the Bronx is where my style evolved from worn out buildings and the blocks of old'

♪ From sunny days to throwing snow in the cold ♪ ♪ Where graffiti bubble letters are written in bold ♪ ♪ DJ spun the record and the story was told ♪

XAVIAN: What I like about songwriting is that it expresses who I am. People don't always have to try to fit in.

You could be however you want, no matter what. I think kids should write songs

just to bring out their actual spirit. You have to express that you can rap or tell your parents

or express with someone. And write it down in a book and it will make you feel better.

then maybe there might be something going on in their life and they want to just let it out. Just write it down, make it rhyme, make it flow.
