on "homestead rescue"...

We got homesteaders directly
in the path of floodwaters.

We're one storm away
from disaster.

One of those flash floods
going on right now.

[ Thunder rumbles ]

I had 30 chickens,
and I am down to four.

What?
Predators took us out.

Jerry: I've been making knives
for 14 years.

That's how I've made my living,

But it's been a year
since I've made a knife.

We need to take this
knife-making business

And turn it into something
they could live off of.

We'll get this thing empty,
wrap it in chicken wire.

Let's turn it
into a chicken coop.

The water actually goes
underneath this house?

Yes.

They want me to do something
I'm not familiar with --

Build a dam that can protect
that house

From mother nature at its worst.

into saving

The smiths' homestead legacy
from being wiped out.

But a severe storm

be nothing,

But then it could,
in a blink of an eye, develop.

It's scary.

It could wash everything that
we've worked together away.

Debbie:
we can't move forward

Until the flooding factor
is dealt with...

...because we could be in vain
that we do up until that point.

Narrator:
if marty's unfinished dam
can't contain the floods,

The entire homestead
is back to square one.

Matt: it was clear blue sky
an hour ago.

I mean, in the last 20 minutes,

We have clouds
swirling around us.

The weather just shut down.

One, 1,000, two, 1,000...

That was close.
...three, 1,000.

Narrator: the storm breaks.

Misty abandons her
half-finished chicken coop,

And matt is forced
to leave the knife shop.

We have a real problem.

Misty, hey! [ Whistles ]

We got hail coming down!

Everybody in!
Let's go!

[ Thunderclap ]

The weather in missouri
is crazy, dad.

Marty:
is the half-built dam adequate

To protect this homestead?

I guess I'm about to find out.

[ Thunder crashing ]

What do you think of that
lightning last night?

Oh, my lord.

If that dam fails,
it's catastrophic,

And we've created
a 10-times-worse problem

For this homestead.

the storm wasn't strong enough
to flood the homestead,

But if the dam has failed
to hold water,

All the other projects
count for nothing.

That's a big puddle for now,

But it looks like
it holds water, huh?

It's amazing,

And it just gives hope
for the future.

And then looking to the future,

I see a whole line of grandkids
with fishing poles.

We're going to line the banks

Narrator: marty's dam
is so large,

A whole night's rain
only filled a tenth of the pond.

It's so epic on multiple levels.

As you hit off, first and
most important in the flooding.

Marty:
we got a long ways to go.

My work isn't done
right now, okay?

Narrator: three days ago,
daughter kasee

And husband dustin
unveiled their plan

To move a second cabin
into the flood zone.

The plan is to take
this building

And attach it
to the back of our house.

Make it bigger...
Yes.

...for kids
and the family in the future.

He understands
what we're going through,

And I think he would be
willing to help.

Misty: last night's storm
was just one storm.

We've seen the damage flooding
can do in missouri firsthand.

Kasee and dustin, they want to
have a family, more livestock.

They want to move cabins
and expand the living quarters.

All of it sounds great.

I just have
one main concern --

Bringing kids into a flood zone.

What if the dam breaks?

The dam breaks, it's on me,
not good.

The smiths all have smiles
on their faces.

This is the envy
of any homesteader,

But should the dam break,
it would be catastrophic.

We've got to figure out
something so that

Misty is comfortable with the
safety of these homesteaders.

the revamped workshop...

This place is looking ready
to make knives in.

Yeah, isn't it?

...matt and jerry start
to make a knife,

So jerry can start
making money.

I love how we're just starting
with a piece of paper.

Yeah, yeah.
You got to start somewhere.

This would be the template.

The next thing we need to do
is talk handle material.

I make this product.
It's actually made from denim.

It's crazy how hard it is.
[ Chuckles ]

So the next thing
would be steel,

Something about this thick.

When you sharpen it,
it has a wicked edge on it.

Narrator: jerry's first
custom knife in a year

Will be brought to life
in the new dirty room.

No gloves because you need all
the feeling on what you're doing

Because the slightest
bit of pressure

Is going to change everything.

Matt: so far, making knives
with jerry,

It's really apparent that,
I mean,

This is him in his element,
you know?

This is like his little
man cave, his workshop.

We've made it better than ever.

Narrator: the belt grinder
shapes the steel,

And the knife is ready
for sharpening.

The thinner the blade gets, the

bake this cookie in the oven.

...the raneys have 2 days left
to save the legacy

Of a multigenerational
homesteading family.

If the kids leave, jerry and I
just couldn't continue.

Narrator: misty's chicken coop
is predator-proof,

With the henhouse
raised on stilts

And fitted with
extra-protective steel...

Is a raccoon going to be
able to reach in?

No.

...for the introduction
of egg-laying hens.

The homestead's knife business
is producing its first blade.

Jerry: it's all starting
to come together now.

Narrator: but to keep the smith
homestead legacy alive...

Of course, we would like
to raise a small family.

Narrator: ...daughter kasee
and husband dustin

Need to move an extra cabin down
into the unprotected flood zone.

What if the dam breaks?

The dam breaks, it's on me,
not good.

Narrator: now, marty's
at a local junkyard...

I had a chevy truck
just like that.

That was the only chevy
I ever owned in my life.

...with an idea
to make the dam safer.

Marty: so this one's been robbed
of everything.

It's going to lose
one more piece today

If that horn still works.

♪♪

I'm guessing that horn
is at least 50 to 60 years old.

Moment of truth.

A little something I do
in the morning to get me going.

No, I'm just kidding.
[ Laughs ]

We'll ground it,

And we'll try to find
the hot side of this horn.

[ Honking ]

Look at the dust fly
out of that horn!

[ Horn continues ]

Wow. That's loud.

So the idea is this --

We will mount this horn
right next

To the front door of dustin
and kasee's cabin.

We'll run a wire up to the dam.

We still have to figure out
some kind of a spillway

So that when the floodwaters
come and the overflow

Starts to come down that trench,

We'll devise something
that triggers

Or makes a connection,
right here,

It'll make a connection
which will trigger the horn,

Just like we did
with the jumper cables.

We're taking it.

[ Bird chirping ]

back on the homestead

At the predator-proof
chicken coop,

Misty upcycles
some of debbie's old heirlooms.

I see all these little things
that you had sitting around.

We're using old baby crib
rails for ramps.

We're using old furniture legs
for perches.

We're using her mother's
old cake pan for our water.

You grab that laundry
detergent jug

And meet me back
in the chicken coop.

All right.

Narrator: the final addition --
a waterer,

Using a jug and debbie's mom's
old baking tray.

Nip off the stopper, okay?

Narrator: misty has a trick
to make it automatic.

We have to find
the right ratio for air...

Uh-huh.

...so that it'll stop water
from flowing out.

Let's fill this up
with water...

Okay.

...because the general concept
will definitely work.

It's just going to take
a little time.

Let's see if it fills up the pan
and then stops itself,

And then you have
an automatic waterer.

This is going to be our valve,

And this is going to be
the tricky part.

I'm going to screw this
a little bit,

And we'll find
that perfect little spot.

Narrator: misty tries to find
the sweet spot of air pressure,

So the tray refills
without overflowing.

Success.

We have the perfect
amount of air.

Let's mark that spot.
That is really cool.

Narrator: misty has one more
ingenious trick.

Misty: the idea with creating
a hanging waterer is,

It doesn't get dirty
with all the chicken chaos.

There is your hanging
automatic waterer.

Love it.

Narrator: the coop and henhouse
are now ready for laying birds

To give debbie
an income once again.

I just really love
what we've done here

Because we recycled
this plastic jug.

It's not going to end up
in the landfill,

And we used the cake pan
that used to be your mom's.

So every time you water
the chickens,

You're going to think of her.

over at the knife shop,

The furnace is tempering
its first blade in a year.

When this door comes open
at temperature,

We don't want anybody,
any skin or beards,

Within this whole area here.

That's a beard destroyer,

We've got 2 minutes to get
the blade out of the oven,

Out of its bag it's in,
between the plates,

Without burning the shop down.

We're going to be playing one of
the craziest games of hot potato

I've ever played.
Exactly, that's it.

Here.

Holy smokes.

-Whoa.
-This sucker's hot.

That is blazing hot.

Mm-hmm.

[ Rooster caws
in background ]

Get her open.

It looks hot.

The cookie is ready.
Whoa.

Holy, holy jeez.
Look at that knife.

Set that plate on there,
and we're good to go.

Oh, okay.

-Whoa.

Dude, it's just so hot.

Yeah, you could probably feel it
through the plate in a minute.

Yeah. You can already feel it
right there.

We got to get it below 125
in 2 minutes.

I think we accomplished it.
What's next?

Well, we're going to let it cool
to room temperature

And do two tempering runs
on it.

We're going to bring it
to a lower temperature,

Which will ease the stress
in that blade,

Because, right now, when it
cools down, it'll be brittle.

I mean, you could drop it
on those plates

And possibly snap it,
you know?

-Really?
-Yeah.

Okay, so we're going to do
a couple more treatments,

You know, and we'll temper it
a couple more times,

And then we'll be ready
to finish this thing off.

We're going to grind it up,
dress it up.

Sweet.

Narrator: back at the coop,
misty, debbie, and kasee

Are ready to take delivery
of 12 egg-laying hens.

This is the biggest chicken coop
I have ever built.

[ Horn honks ]

Hi!

You guys order something
special?

[ Laughs ]

Oh, my word.
[ Chirping ]

There's been a major
misunderstanding.

Those aren't --

I thought I ordered hens,
but we've received chicks.

-Oh, my gosh.
-Oh, great.

These are, like, a day old.
Yeah.

I think they were born
yesterday.

This is bad.

We're not set up in any way
to have chicks,

Because they need


They need a different
type of food.

They need a brooder box,
and they can very easily die.

Narrator: the day-old chicks
must have immediate attention,

Starting with access to water
and a warm brooder box.

Part of me is so sad.
We were there!

The chicken coop was built,

But now I'm going
to deconstruct it

To make a safe place
for these chicks.

So here's what I'm thinking,
girls.

Here's our leftover lumber.

I'm thinking just build
this tiny, little box

Out of the scraps.

I'll get these two, kasee.

-You want to grab this?
-Sure.

There's no time to waste,
so we have to get this ready.

once the brooder box is built,

Lamps will recreate
the warmth of a mother hen.

Misty: we'll grab the box
that we built.

We'll throw it in here.

[ Misty laughs ]

Misty: okay, it's like
that weird couch

That you're wondering
if it'll fit.

[ Sighs ]
okay, let's grab the chicks.

Take them out of their box,
and one by one,

Can you dip their beaks
in the water?

And then they all have been
shown their water.

I have concerns
and a legitimate worry.

I do not want to have any loss
on my watch,

And those chickens,
in this state,

Potentially could
very easily die.

[ Chirping ]

The raneys are attempting
to save the smith homestead

Kasee: jeez!

to check

If any of the day-old birds
survived the night.

Misty: the first night
is the hardest.

That's when you have loss.
[ Chirping ]

Look at these guys.

Wow, they look amazing.

They all look very lively,

And there was
zero loss overnight,

So it's plenty warm,
which is your biggest concern.

If you see them all huddled
in a corner as far as they can

Get away from the light,
then it means it's too hot.

If you see them all huddled
underneath the light,

Then it means that they're
too cold, but look at them.

They're just going about
their daily life,

And everybody looks
happy and healthy.

Baby chicks can get
what's called pasty butt,

And really, it's just from
a stressful day of travel

Or other things.

It's a very simple fix.

You just check their backside,

And if it looks like
it's clogged,

You take a warm washcloth,
and you wipe it off.

There's life on the homestead.

It's good stuff.

Narrator:
with happy and healthy chicks,

Misty can finally receive

...bringing debbie's brood back

So to me, what I see

This is where
the magic happens.

over at the knife shop,

Jerry and son parker
are ready to start production.

in here and just produce knives?

That's the goal, really.

I mean, I'm excited to
see knives being produced,

Being cranked out.

We're going to start
cranking them out.

before the raneys arrived,

Jerry had long stopped
making knives

In the cluttered workshop.

Jerry:
the end of last summer was
the last time I made a knife.

off the production line --

with compressed denim handle,

By carving spillways to redirect

from the flood zone.

I'm putting the finishing
touches on the dam,

on either side.

Hopefully, we can control
where they breach

And where they go afterward

And minimize the impact
to this homestead.

Marty backs up
his junkyard treasure trove

To tackle the final stage
of the dam.

Marty:
just when you think you took
your last bike ride,

Somebody comes along
and repurposes you.

Misty still thinks that
based on the floodwaters

She's seen before,

The worst-case scenario
could happen,

A massive flood, dam fail.

So the idea right now
is to figure out an alarm system

That will spark
to this horn...

Ah!

...and let kasee and dustin
know floodwaters are coming.

[ Whirring ]

Narrator: marty's bicycle wheel
is the alarm's key component.

If the dam breaches, the water
will turn the wheel,

Sounding the horn.

This might be the very,
very first paddle wheel

Flood warning system ever.

We'll set it in here.

Let's give it its first spin.

The water's going to be
going down there, right?

Those paddles
should catch water.

Oh, yeah.

It seems fairly balanced,
doesn't have a lot of drag.

I think it's going to work.

It's still flooding.

in half of the ozarks.

That thing goes off,

You got to come out
and see what's going on.

Narrator: for the past 5 years,

Kasee and dustin
lived in a flood zone,

The unrelenting missouri storms
overwhelming their property.

Dustin: it's like a river
running through the hog pen.

Now, uphill from their cabin,

Marty's dug a 100-by-80-foot
flood-defense dam

Capable of holding half
a million gallons of water,

Complete with
excess-releasing spillways

And an off-grid alarm system,

Protecting the flood zone,
whatever the weather.

[ Horn honking ]
[ chuckling ]

I think the new addition
to our pond is creative,

And it's definitely going
to be loud when it goes off.

Just like a tornado warning,
you got,

Like,
just a few seconds.

I guess we're moving
the cabin.

We got an alaska-sized project
to do tomorrow.

-Okay.

Tomorrow is going
to be organized chaos.

I mean, that is a big cabin.

That is a big excavator.

I'll be in the bushes
somewhere.

Marty: the day has come.

We're going to move
this building

Down to dustin
and kasee's place.

-What is the plan?
-Look how narrow the road is.

Look at the hill.
Look at the mud down there.

This thing is not made
to be moved.

How heavy is this building?

People have said it could be
upwards of 4 tons, 8,000 pounds.

So we're going to move
a 4-ton building?

It helps --
crack, crack.

We travel a long ways.

We work really hard
to help people.

It's that simple, and this
building getting moved

Over there helps them.

That is crazy.

Matt: [ laughs ] lord.

What do the kids say nowadays,
cray-cray?

-Misty: I don't say that.
-[ Matt laughs ]

Narrator: the raneys now face
the homestead's biggest fix,

Moving the 4-ton cabin
half a mile

Down an uneven track
to give kasee and dustin

The space they need
to start a family.

Marty:
we've got to move a cabin.

We'll have one excavator
on this end,

Another excavator
down here on this end.

I'm going to use pine log
and a few straps.

♪♪

Marty plans to move the cabin
using two excavators

With tree trunks
to spread the weight.

He'll build a wooden frame
around the cabin

And wrap straps
around each beam,

Creating a huge hammock.

Marty will then pick it
with the excavators

And attempt to transport it down


Before maneuvering it around
a tight 90-degree bend

And laying it
on foundation blocks

Just inches from kasee
and dustin's home.

That's a two-by-four truss.

These are two-by-four walls.

Can you see this?

It complicates the move.

It ain't tough enough,
and it ain't strong enough.

So we have to pick it carefully

So that it doesn't start
doing this

or collapsing on itself.

at the same time.

you could kind of straighten
out a little bit.

In another 5 feet,
start turning.

In order to make this
very tight corner,

My dad's going to walk it
straight up this hill,

And then matt is going

Narrator: now the attempt to
make a 90-degree turn...

I think we might have zigged
when we should have zagged.

Narrator:
...has crushed the cabin,

Bringing the move
to a standstill.

I don't know how we're going to
get it around this corner.

♪♪

I got an idea.

Everybody, pay attention.

That log's coming off.

We're going to hook all of
those straps on the bucket.

[ Beeping ]

Misty: that spreader bar wasn't
giving us a lot of freedom

To make a corner that tight.

He'll have more swivel
and more freedom.

Matt: so I don't really know
what's going to happen,

But we might actually lose
a little bit of the stability.

Marty: let's go!

Going up!

[ Beeping ]
bring back!

Narrator: with marty's
spreader bar gone,

He's free to turn
without compressing the cabin.

It's not going to get
any better than that.

Narrator:
but the new plan also makes
the cabin much less stable.

[ Creaking ]

We're tilting real bad.

[ Beeping,
creaking continues ]

I'm constantly, you know,
just fiddling with the controls,

Trying to make sure
that we don't tip this thing.

[ Beeping ]

Straighten out.

We made the corner.

Marty: all right,
it's the home stretch!

The correct move is right now.

Can we get this thing
level enough

Where we can get it around
the existing

Foundation blocks
that we have down?

If that happens,
it will be a miracle.

Narrator: the night has
caught up with them.

The lights are on.
We could be here all night.

Kasee: and we're racing
against time here, and light.

Hopefully they can work out
the kinks

And get it moved quickly.

Marty: walk it in!

all right, I'm walking.

Misty:
okay, watch the house!

[ Creaking ]

Narrator:
the cabin has slid so much

In its hammock...

against the cabin corners.

Marty: this thing's got
to go 10 feet.

Matt: just chill.

-Marty: what's the problem?!

What's happening?

we have strap issues.

Narrator:
the cabin threatens to slide

Completely free of its hammock.

You guys, this strap
could come out.

We're about 10 feet
from the finishing line.

It's kind of getting crazy now.

Marty: can matt do the 10 feet,

Misty: oh, my gosh.

[ Creaking, beeping ]
