All my life here,
I've been dredging.
And every time I wake up,
I think about gold already.
Carrying on the family legacy,

his own mark on the Bering Sea
and blow the rest of the fleet

When I turned 19,
I moved to Nome
and I just said it,
started gold mining.
My dad inspired me to do it.
My dad, Dave McCully,
he's an old-timer here in Nome.
He started all this...
Well, he's one of the early guys
that started this
offshore dredging.
One day he said, "Do you
wanna go dive for gold?"
And I said, "Hell, yeah."
I've been diving in Nome
for a decade now.
I helped Kris Kelly
a couple years ago.

mostly helping my dad out.

I am the next generation,
it doesn't mean everything

When I got here, I had nothing.
Believe it or not, I got
fired off my dad's company.
In that sense, my dad, in a way,
taught me how to be strong
and not to complain too much

gold dredgers out there.
I've had my own operation
for a while now,
but this winter,
I'm stepping it up.
I wanna pull more gold
than everyone out there,
including Shawn.
I'm upgrading
my ice mining operation
with new technology.
For this winter, I'm gonna
need a hundred ounces
to cover everything
for my operation.
But it's all gonna be
worth it at the end
when I show the fleet
what I'm capable of.
I wanna prove to my dad
that I can do this by myself.
My paycheck
is out there in the ocean
and all I gotta do
is go out and get it.

Ice mining is pretty crazy.
We're gonna have to cut
a hole in a thick ice,
put on our wet suit,
pump it with hot water,

about 30, 40 feet.
You could lose air
and not get back
to your dive hole on time.
A lot of things could go wrong.
The first dive of the year
sets the tone,
and I need this one
to be perfect.

This winter is about
maintaining my dominance
in Nome.
I got a two-pronged plan
to make sure that happens.
First, bringing in
some new toys,
like this, the SHERP.
It's like a mini tank.
It's gonna get me across
rough ice patches in a hurry.
And that's just
the tip of the iceberg.
Next, I'm taking a big gamble.
I'm gonna try
to expand my empire.
I know the Tomcod's my baby.
That's where I made my fortune.
But I'm gonna roll the dice.
I'm going to a new area,
the East Tract Claim.
It's too deep to reach
with an excavator,
so diving's my only chance
to check it out.
And the drill logs tell me
there's an ancient river channel
that runs right through it,
just waiting to be tapped.
That's why I'm aiming
to get a hundred ounces,
which is a pretty lofty number.
If I'm right,
the Pomrenke empire
expands beyond the Tomcod.
If I'm wrong, then I just
cost the company a fortune
mining on some pipe dream.

After squeaking by this summer,

that I really couldn't run

stress, fights,
craziness, breaking down,
not getting enough gold,

building an underwater robot

This summer,

that's coming next week.
This thing will break

long streak of bad luck
was finally broken
when he acquired Claim 56.
That's our best cleanup yet.
But after a disappointing summer
I don't see any cobble.
He's hoping to mount a comeback
with every beat of his heart.
I had an attack Sunday night.
They operated on me Monday.
I flew up here on Tuesday.
When I got here,
I had a severe
shortness of breath.
I checked into the hospital
here in Nome on Wednesday
and they found out
that my damn diaphragm
is not working
on the right side.
There was a complication
with a swollen heart
because of the tissue damage
pressing up against a nerve
that controls my diaphragm.
And so half my diaphragm
doesn't work
right at this moment.
Doctors telling me
it's gonna come back.
I hope the hell it does.
The last thing any sane person
with a heart problem would do
would be to come to Nome
in the dead of winter
and go ice mining.
But gold miners
are not sane people.
Least of all, me.
This heart fibrillation
problem is no joke
and it's been acting up
pretty bad lately.
The main thing I gotta do
is not let the stress up here
get to me, and, luckily,
I'm pretty good at that.

Last winter sucked because
I went out on the ice
kind of assuming
that it would be an easy winter
and it was just too hard.
I think it was just
too many storms.
It's impossible to make money
under those conditions.
At the end of last winter,
I realized I couldn't
approach ice mining
in the same way
I'd been approaching it.
Well, let's keep it all
out of the weather.
Like that's the approach
this winter
is to be able to have
a self-contained operation
that doesn't get shut down
every time
the wind starts blowing.
Last year's season,
the weather was so fierce.
We were unable to really
have very much success
because we were stuck out
in the weather all the time.
So this season, I'm putting
all the key components,
the dive hole and sluice box,
the whole team,
all of our gear
just under one big roof
to keep us out of the weather.
This is a pretty
ambitious operation.
There's a lot of gear,
and if it doesn't work out,
it'll pretty much bankrupt me.
We pulled all our gear
to the east
barge ramp here by the harbor.
Everything is gonna be inside.
We're gonna have a big
wood-burning stove.
All our gear, all our tools.
A big enough room for
like five guys to hang out in
and be warm at all times.
It's gonna be sick.
To haul this big tent around,
I'm gonna need a lot more power
than I've had in the past.
More power and more gear
means a bigger operation.
So I'm gonna need a bigger team
to make this work out too.
The coziest setup
I've ever mined in.
It's really nice.
It's real high-tech stuff here.
It's called tape.
Straighten out a few things
and get her
on the way out there.
It's all systems go.
To keep myself afloat
and out of bankruptcy,
I'm gonna need to get
at least 25 ounces out of it.
We've still got our deal
with Shawn to mine on Tomcod,
so we know
that there's good ground.
And with this team
we've got
and this whole new setup,
I think it's a real
recipe for success.
