and more fragile than ever,

the massive winds have the power

to drive ocean currents
away from shore,

breaking apart
huge sections of ice

and sweeping them
directly out to sea,

taking with it anything
or anyone in its path.

Now as the vicious storm
takes aim at the fleet,

the question is this...

Will the miners
escape the icy crosshairs?

We now have everything

to make this gold mining
operation work

so I'll rush out there
as best as I can,

there's like zero visibility
on the trail.

We're in the middle
of a tundra blizzard

so we're just gonna
get out there

and try as hard as we can
to get a diver under the ice.

I have not had
a fun history with ice mining.

It's been pretty brutal.

I've never had
a successful season.

Our original plan,
good old faithful 14,

that fell through
because the ice was thin.

Then I had to make a deal
with shawn to work on tomcod.

And now we're down here going
head-to-head with the storm.

You know, nothing's
going our way,

but we're just gonna keep going.

We'll get lucky today,
put some gold in the box,

and, at the very least,
get a frickin' dive in.

not good at all.

Narrator: Mr. Gold's also ready
to lock horns

with mother nature.

Shawn: We're gonna have to be
ready to get off the ice.

It's gonna blow the water out,
drop the ice down.

It might hang on, but who knows
how good it's tied in here.

That stuff moves around.

If we don't get our stuff
off the ice,

there is a high possibility
of losing everything.

Narrator: This winter,
shawn is scrambling

to come up with $400,000

to fund the purchase
of the tomcod claim,

but the approaching storm
could throw an icy wrench

into his plans.

The north winds can push
seawater away from shore

and lower the tide,

causing the thin ice to collapse
and break into pieces

that will be blown out to sea,

along with any equipment
or miners foolish enough

to remain on the ice.

Shawn: You don't want to push it
to the very end

and then lose all your gear,

and then there goes
any kind of mining

or any kind of gold
for the rest of the year.

So it's not worth
taking that risk.

And I'm not leaving my stuff
on the ice.

At 30 miles an hour,

that wind has enough force
it'll pile the ice up

on top of each other,

and it'll slide and pile up,
and it'll move.

With the ice so thin this year,
you're just asking for trouble

with a storm this big.

There's a real chance

that the storm will come
and break off the ice,

take my whole operation with it.

I have no choice
but to tempt fate

and try to get gold today.

You might get your hands
sucked up in the nozzle,

you might get your foot,

You'll only be able to see
about a foot from the ground.

So you're gonna have
to have your face kind of-ish

near the nozzle,

but if you stick it too close,

it will suck your mask
off your face.

There's one way in, one way out.

And if you pop your gear
underneath the ice,

the current of the ocean
will take you way over there,

and you'll never come back.

If she can dive longer than it
takes me to smoke a cigarette,

I mean, it's under ice,
dead of winter, bering sea,

and a new crew.

I've never dealt with the ice,
but I'm up for the challenge.

Brad: If you got a dry suit,
you can't, it's too cold.

She won't be able to get warm.

shaunna: Brought a dry suit,
not a wet suit.

With a wet suit,
you can hook up hot water

and you can stay alive.

We're gonna get a diver
in the water here pretty quick.

It's supposed to
get windy tonight,

and it's supposed to
be blowing 30, 35 knots.

and we got pulled out
of that first toll.

It was not productive
enough for us,

so we moved to a new location.

we're heading right now.

Our first time out on claim 16,

we didn't get enough gold to
convince me it's gonna pay.

So we're gonna make a move,
go out deeper,

looking for that hot spot.

If I'm gonna plunk down
a fortune on this lease,

I need to know it's gonna pay.

Got no time to dilly dally,

but mother nature is gonna be

Under the ice, any kind of
diving over 30 feet

is definitely not ideal.

The diver's farther

so it's greater chances

I mean, not only are you
risking the bends,

but you're also cutting off
your surface time.

We've had so many setbacks,

this is our first dive
of the season

so I don't know what to expect.

Neither jeff nor I have
ever mined a tomcod.

We needed the coordinates

and we might not be able
to get back out there.

I've got to scrape together
the gold we got today

to another episode of

ice mining secrets
with kris kelly.

Today, we're gonna be talking
about the weather.

The weather in the arctic,

you can imagine it's probably
not very nice.

You know, at 20 degrees,

you think you're in the arctic,
but that's not it.

When you put this little symbol
here in front of it,

that's a whole new world of cold

that's so cold
you could lose fingers.

You add a


all of a sudden that ice
is like -30,

and that's so cold your eyes
stick together when you blink.

That's one step away from death,
that's what that is.

And that's everyday life
up here in nome, alaska.

I'm pretty smart.

I layer up more
than you can believe.

I usually have about 80 pounds
of clothing on

at all times
in the middle of winter.

The beach line of nome
basically runs east and west.

A strong north wind will
actually make the ice move away,

break away from the shore
and move to russia.

A strong south wind,

and it will actually lift
the ocean

and push the ice on the shore.

And then when it goes back down,

it breaks, and
there's another chance

of ice washing out to
the middle of nowhere.

Ice mining is not that safe.

As the siberian express

rapidly descends on nome,

the ice miners have batten
down their hatches

and return safely ashore.

Kris: It's just gonna be
a long haul this year.

Let's just concentrate
on the good.

The good is we got some hours
in, and we know we're on gold.

Shaunna did a pretty good job.

Everything kind of worked out.

And she's gonna get better
every single day.

Narrator: After auditioning
a new diver,

the kellys are hoping
the extra hand

will pay off in extra gold.

I have never seen somebody

wear a dry suit
in the winter, though.

At least she's not scared
to get underneath the water.

to be a better diver than he is.

we can keep up the pace.

We had definitely
a rough start this ice season.

Maybe we did better

That's what we always hope for,

easy for us.

I mean, when jeff's compressor
failed at 33 feet,

that was a really scary time
for me and him.

That's stressful.

Diving at that depth

and having your equipment
be so unpredictable.

It seems like as soon as we
start getting on some nice gold

and making some nice money,
we get chased off by a storm.

But we're just gonna have
to see what the scale says.

Emily: Ugh. At least the gold's
nice and chunky.

Well, it's something.
Jeff: It's not good.

Emily: That storm didn't help us

what we were hoping to see out
there on tomcod.

We're on gold.

It's not great, but we've got to
work with what we have.

If there's any chance
we can profit at all,

I think we should give it
our best shot.

We have a long way to go

before we can get
to that 60 ounce count,

but we're gonna keep
pushing for it.

Shawn: I felt kind of rushed
on my dive,

but you can't change
mother nature.

We had some pretty high winds
come through.

Narrator: After betting he could
stay ahead of the storm,

Shawn: Hey, sometimes you gamble
and sometimes you win,

sometimes you lose.

With the season being so short,

we take a few more risks
than we probably should,

but no risk, no reward.

I pushed it. I have to.

Heck. I would have
pushed it another hour,

if my team didn't pack it up.

Not that they were wrong.

I just like to take
these kind of chances.

The bering sea is fickle.

You got to take the
opportunities she presents you.

We're getting closer to
our $400,000 mark,

but if the ocean gets angry
and the winds start blowing,

that ice is gone,

and we just don't know
how much more time we'll get.
