04x01 - Bigfoot Island

Last season
on Expedition bigfoot...

We're going big.

The team investigated the rugged
mountain forests of northern California.

We are most definitely
in the best spot.

They spent weeks scouring the
landscape... Holy. Did you hear that?

It sounds like a warning.

It's like
a horror movie in here.

This is one of the
weirdest places I've been.

...and discovered
shocking evidence.

- Look, look, look.
- Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa.

I just heard something
really big run past me.

What the is that?

That thing just stood up.

Dude!

Then through a web of giant fir
trees and dense undergrowth...

Look down below me.

...the team uncovered
two massive nests.

Hey, guys, we've
got some hair over here.

They had hairs
found nearby analyzed.

The lab results are back.

They're somewhat shocking.

They were actually able to determine
that it was a subspecies of wolf

known as the Alexander Archipelago
wolf, which only lives in one place,

southeastern Alaska.

So, to me, it really leaves us
no other option, guys.

We're going to Alaska.

We're here.

Oh, my God.

The last expedition we had
a very surprising find.

It was from a hair sample that
we collected in northern California.

And it belonged to a very rare wolf species
that is only found in southeastern Alaska.

But the highest concentration of
this animal lives on a particular island,

and that island
is Prince of Wales.

By the laws of probability alone,
this is where we should be looking.

Sometimes in science,
the answers are that obvious.

We're gonna be meeting a
gentleman at that dock right there.

So, here's the thing.

Prince of Wales Island is the third
largest island in the United Sates.

It's bigger than
the state of Delaware.

So, Mireya and I are here talking to locals on
a fact-finding mission to narrow our target.

And I caught wind of a story
that took place a few weeks ago...

Something alarming
happened here.

And I spoke to about 10 people
who were involved in the incident.

Unfortunately, none of them
wanted to go in front of the cameras.

But I was able to get in contact with one
gentleman who told me he'd go on record

as long as we hid his identity.

It's up here.

We've been told that there was a
troubling incident that took place here

that shook up the whole island.

There were town meetings about
it, and it had people pretty scared.

And if what they're
saying is true,

this could be the start
of something huge.

- How's it goin'? I'm Bryce.
- Nice to meet you.

- Hi, I'm Mireya.

Thanks for meeting us out here.

Where exactly are we?
What is this?

- We're about 30 miles from the nearest town.
- Okay.

No roads, so it's not like people
can just easily come out here.

We understand there was an
incident that took place here?

Yeah. I'm a logger,
and, uh, two weeks ago,

we were all working out here,
there was at least 20 guys

and, uh, we just started
noticing things were moved.

Really?

We'd find things just gone, and
then we'd go looking for them,

and find them down
in the edge of the woods.

Do you think a bear could
have taken the stuff?

No. If it would've been a bear, there'd be
some kind of signs or tracks or something.

- Were there any kind of tracks at all?
- Nothin'.

That's what was really
weird about it.

And it happened a few times,
it just wasn't comfortable.

And then shortly after that happened,
that's when the sounds started.

What kind of sounds?

Like an animal that we've
never heard before in distress.

The closest I can come to it
is a woman getting attacked.

Wow.

When you're hearing something
like that come out of the forest,

and you know there's no
women up here, what do you do?

What do you think it was
making those noises?

We know the animals that are
in the area, what they sound like,

and it was nothing like
anything we'd ever heard before.

It's hard to explain
or to describe.

- It made our skin crawl.
- Yeah.

Just being here now,

- it makes me nervous just thinking about it.
- Mm.

And the screams that
you were hearing,

did it sound like they were coming
from really close to this area?

Well, the first night when we heard 'em, it was
coming from down in the woods, a little ways.

And then every night, they just
got a little closer, a little louder,

to the point where, uh, it was just, uh,
scary and helpless all at the same time,

because somethin'
didn't want us here.

And this just started
happening a couple weeks ago?

A little over a couple
of weeks ago.

It was about two weeks ago was when everybody
finally just had enough and had to get out of here.

That's when people
started leaving.

And that must
have been pretty severe

for you guys to actually stop
your work and leave this site.

I mean, we felt like
sitting ducks out here.

Just didn't feel safe.

Did anybody mention
the word bigfoot?

We knew what it was,
and people disappear out here.

These things come and take 'em.

That's why a lot of people
don't like to talk about it.

Is that something that's
commonly reported?

That people are
disappearing in this area?

That's what I've heard.

The other witnesses I spoke to
about this event had very similar stories.

And the fact that these people were willing to
give up months of work, tells me this was real,

and we could be facing
a very serious threat.

Let me ask you this. If they're not here
anymore, where do you think they are now?

I think they're
back up the mountain.

- Have you ever been up there?
- No.

That's their territory.

The old guys say
that's where they are,

that's where they live.

If I was you, I would stay
as far away as possible.

After that testimony, we went back and got our
gear, and the whole team is now on the way back

to begin an expedition
on Prince of Wales Island.

Alaska is the most untouched,
wildest, untamed area I've ever seen.

And this feels like the most target-rich
environment for bigfoot sightings ever.

Yeah, this is gonna be
some challenging territory,

but it's the right location
according to our witness.

So many people are
corroborating the same story.

This isn't just stories from the past, but
these things are happening now, currently.

And when you have
this many elements that align,

now's the time to strike.

Based on the last sighting
from just weeks prior,

the team is targeting the area surrounding a
remote mountain, eight miles from the work site.

We're almost there.

This 60,000 square foot area
will be their target zone

during their investigation
over the next seven weeks.

Hearing the story of this mass
sighting doesn't surprise me.

Alaska's filled with these stories of
bigfoot-like creatures from the tribes.

There's a lot of strange stuff
up here as well, not just bigfoot.

Native American legends
and stories of this area

talk about bigfoot being
this supernatural being.

Not only that, the different
reports of bigfoot up here

are that they are more
aggressive, more hostile.

It's a concern, so
we need to be on high alert

because it just adds another
level of danger to our expedition.

We should be
coming up to it soon.

Oh, yeah, there it is.

Wow.

Looking at the terrain of this
mountain is highly intimidating.

It's gray in color because of all
the rocks that cover the surface.

So, for lack of a better term,
we refer to this as Grey Mountain.

We're gonna touch down
in that lake, right there.

Wow!

It's gonna be really dense
when we get down there.

This is the world's largest
temperate rainforest.

As a scientist, this place is an absolute
playground when it comes to biodiversity.

It has one of the highest amount of animals
and plants here that are found nowhere else.

People actually refer to this
place as the Galapagos of the north.

We know that there's a very
heavy predator population here.

There's also very healthy
prey population.

So we know that this area can
sustain a very large mammal.

- Are you ready?
- Let's do it.

I'm looking down on this place and
all I can think about is Skull Island,

expecting to run
into something like King Kong.

And to get on the ground, to finally feel what
this place looks like is gonna be incredible.

All right, here we go.

The small alpine lake is situated two
miles from the base of Grey Mountain,

where the team believes
Bigfoot may be hiding.

With limited roads, this is the
closest access they have to their target.

This feels very, very foreign.

Ronny and Mireya will set up
their first base camp near the shore

and explore the mountainside
closest to the work site.

What a great little spot.

Russell's plan is to investigate
the opposite side of the mountain.

The location that we have
selected for our base camp

lies between the work site
and the base of the mountain,

which we're referring to as Grey Mountain,
where all the activity took place.

That means that if a creature is
moving through and between these areas,

we will be able to be in a
centralized location and pick up on it.

But because we are so limited
on the data points that we have,

we've got a lot
of ground to cover.

Bryce will oversee operations from outside
the target zone, collecting and analyzing data

while the field team ventures
into the Alaskan wilderness.

The forests of Oregon, California and Washington
are nothing compared to the forests of Alaska.

Around here, the mountains are
higher, the lakes and streams are colder,

and the wildlife
is even more deadly.

In Alaska, everything has
to fight for survival.

This is gonna be our
toughest expedition yet.

I can't express how excited
I am to be here in Alaska.

Alaska is that final frontier, that wildest of
all wild countries, but it's also very dangerous.

It's unforgiving.

Alaska doesn't care who you are.

This place will chew you up
and spit you out.

Be careful, this
is a different world in here.

So, Ronny, I'm thinking that we should go high
ground, higher elevation, because otherwise

the mammals are gonna
coming down from there.

All of the bigfoot sightings that people
have reported have been along the shoreline.

Everything seems
to be by the water.

When you're looking to make a new discovery,
there is no better place than an island setting.

Everything is contained in a much
higher density and concentration.

What makes it challenging
is so many places to go,

which means that we're having
to cast a much wider net.

Here they are.

- Oh, the drone team's here.
- Great.

So, we brought in some
experts so that we can determine

what the best place is
to start our investigation.

When it comes to bigfoot, eyewitness accounts
report a really strong, pungent, strange odor.

- Hey there, guys.
- Hey.

But today, for the first time, we're gonna
be able to pinpoint that specific scent.

So, can you explain
to us how this works?

Yeah, we've brought some large drones
that allow us to fly above the canopy.

And we can scan using a laser
looking for different types of gases.

We can pick up organic gases that are
natural to humans, animals, uh, anything.

The team has traveled to this remote
island from a lab in British Columbia,

and they've brought with them a specialized
drone equipped with a sophisticated gas sensor.

Usually deployed to reveal gas leaks in pipelines,
it's capable of detecting even minute traces

of specific compounds.

There she goes.

I can't wait to see
what this thing delivers.

The smells reported
to be associated with bigfoot,

rotting flesh, wet dog, skunk, excrement,
all contain chemical compounds called thiols

that contain
a hydrogen-sulfur bond.

Awesome.

The sensor on the drone will be calibrated to
identify these specific chemical compounds.

And if we do get any type of hit at all,
we'll be able to know exactly where that is.

Of course many of these smells could occur
naturally, but not in that high concentration

that witness reports
would suggest.

So, we'll be looking for high
levels of these compounds,

not those that would fall
within a normal range.

So, once it picks up on something, - how will it alert you?
- -You're gonna, you're gonna see

- that graph there.
- Right here?

Yeah, it's gonna spike
and it's gonna make a noise.

How would I distinguish between
just regular, like, organic matter

- and then something with a large spike?
- If it's just something small,

you're just gonna hear
one or two little beep-beeps.

But if it starts
making lots of noise...

- Okay, then I know I'm on to something.
- ...you're gonna know

- that you're on to something very big.
- Okay.

Let's see what's out there.

Now two miles from
Mireya and Ronny's position,

Russell has discovered a river
flowing due east towards the ocean.

Down here to the left,

I've got a waterway.

I can see what comes to the water's edge on the
upside and if there's anything on this side.

In the springtime
when the snows melts,

the animals are coming down off the
mountain looking for food and water.

Now, if bigfoot lives on the mountain,
as out eyewitnesses suggested,

then that means that these rivers
are gonna be their hunting grounds.

You know how they say
everything's bigger in Texas?

Uh, I think it's bigger
in Alaska.

In Alaska, caution has to be
the forefront in your mind out here.

There's the threat of bears,
wolves, this terrain.

The swamp, the pits.

The voids underground.

The slick rocks.

You're talking hours
away from a hospital.

You have to think
that next step ahead.

Am I putting myself
in a spot I can't get out of?

This is insane.

Is that a... - That's it?
- -Yeah, there's something there, yeah.

Three spikes.

That was a decent spike.

See if you get any more.

Are you picking up anything?

- Oh, there, right there again.
- No.

Those were larger than just a small spike
with a little bit of organics from vegetation.

Something significant.

Yes, there's something out there
emitting hydrogen sulfite right now.

How far is that from here?



Then I'd like to actually
go over there now.

Yeah.

The drone has located several targets
where gasses that could be given off by

the foul smell of a bigfoot
have been detected.

The first is 800 meters
from their base camp.

Mireya will maneuver through the
dense forest to investigate the targets,

while Ronny keeps
an eye from above.

- Awesome.
- All right, great.

While this technology is very helpful
and advanced, it's not an exact science.

And so, really the only way to
know what it is that it's targeting

is to get boots on the ground
and go see it.

It's starting
to get kinda rainy.

I'm gonna try to find a place

where we can get some rest.

Two and a half miles east of Ronny and
Mireya, and with a storm system moving in,

Russell must quickly
find shelter.

Hey, check this out.

We clear some of that stuff out
of there and sleep right in here.

Covered a lot
of distance just now.

Just shut it down for a few hours and
see if I can get back out here tonight.

Oh, that smell.

What in the hell is that?

Look.

It came right through there.

Something's broken
off those branches.

It's quiet.

I had to count on
what I was hearing.

And that sound faded away and out-distanced me
to where I couldn't follow those sounds anymore.

I can't tell which way it went.

There's something
out there ahead of us.

It sounded bipedal.

Literally sounded like
something running.

I felt like I was right on its heels, but
whatever this thing is, it's moving much faster

than I can move in this forest.

What was that?

I wanna go back
to where we were.

At least we had something there.

Let's look that over.

There's something hanging
from the branches.

A chunk of skin.

I need to know what it is.

It was just very out of place.

Just really weird.

Mireya, we're
still getting hits.

There is definitely
something there.

You know, whatever's there
seems to be constant.

It's not moving.

We'll just keep
hovering there, Jordan.

Two and a half miles from Russell's position,
Mireya is approaching the first of two targets

where a gas-detecting drone
has identified compounds

that give off smells commonly
associated with bigfoot.

So dense.

So hard to see anything.

But I am starting to
smell something foul.

Hold on a second.

Oh, wow.

What is it?

Oh, my God.

I just found a pile of bones
right in front of me.

No way.

A couple skulls.

And a few spare bits.

Holy.

Those bones are probably
what's making this thing go off.

Looks like maybe deer.

Deer? That's good.

Deer is bigfoot's
main food source.

So this could
actually be a clue.

A pile of bones is exactly
what we found above Lake Fear.

During last year's Washington Investigation,
the team made a shocking discovery.

- Oh, my gosh.
- What the... A massive horde of animal bones.

Right now, we're literally
sitting at a dinner table.

I cannot believe that we just landed,
and immediately, we've discovered

what looks like
a potential k*ll site.

Looks like it's been here a while,
so I'm gonna move to the next spot.

That's about 200 meters.

hits in that same vicinity.

mounted on the drone.

Whatever we're seeing
there, that's abnormal.

Yeah, this is something big because, uh,
this thing is just going crazy right now.

Stay put, I'm gonna
head to your position.

Whatever we're
seeing is constant.

There's something out there.

Mireya, hang tight.

Wait.

It's gradually going down.

No, no, no, no, no.

The gas readings
are dissipating.

- No way.
- That's wild.

It's gone.

Those gasses dissipated quickly.

It's possible that whatever was giving
off that scent was right here just now,

but has moved somewhere
else in the forest.

- Hey.
- Hey.

So, what do you think?

So, something out here was triggering both
the drone in the air and then the handheld,

but it must still
be around here.

So, I say that we track
around this area,

and just see if we can see what it
was that was giving off that signal.

Okay.

Are you smelling that?

Yeah.

It's strong.

I feel like I had it over there, and it's like,
kind of... I feel like the smell's moving around.

What was that?

- Honestly, it sounded like an animal in distress.
- -Yeah.

It was coming
from over by the water.

- What the?
- What?

What the hell was that?

What the?

That's not a wolf.

That sounded like a, like a
person yelling or something.

Well, the first sound, it sounded
like an animal in distress...

- Yeah. - ...but that had a more human...
- Yeah. - ...like, tone to it.

Yeah.

When we hear that blood-curdling
scream, it's hard for us to ignore that.

And it reminded me exactly of what Bryce told
us where this construction site was abandoned.

We started hearing
sounds during the night.

Closest I could come to
is a woman getting attacked.

What the hell?

That sounded like
it was from the lake.

Are you still smelling it?

Yeah, I am.

Frick.

These bigfoot have pushed
these loggers out of this area,

and now we're here, in their home
turf, even closer to the mountain.

They could be even more dangerous
because we are right in their backyard.

Let's go down to the lake.

Yeah, we came
right up through here.

Two and a half miles east, Russell
is returning to the location where

what appeared to be an animal
skin was hanging from a tree.

Okay, it was right up...

Where is it?
Wait, wait, wait, hold it.

We were right here.

It was right there, man.

I'm sure I'm standing
in the same spot.

I'm standing right in front of this
log, I'm looking at the same tree,

and up here there's nothing.

Whatever was hanging
is now gone.

I need to look on your camera.

That's what, about 20 feet up?

How would it get up there?

A bear couldn't have got up there and
not broken off those branches on the way.

I don't know if this thing is leading
us away from what it left behind,

but if this thing that we were
chasing came back,

and took that off the branch,
we've been out-maneuvered.

Something is thinking
ten steps ahead of us.

I think there's more here
than what I'm seeing tonight.

Do you feel like it's
watching us right now?

'Cause I do.

Last night, we covered a lot of area around
the lake before the drone team had to fly back.

But rain means soft ground, and
that means possible prints left behind.

So, we're gonna scour this entire
area and look for that physical evidence.

Problem is, is that we spotted a lot
of bear tracks around here coming in.

I know.

There's, uh, fiddlehead.

Zach, are those food source for the
bears as they're coming out of hibernation?

Yeah, absolutely. Um, the bears
will browse on that new growth,

but it's all over the place,
it's not just the fiddleheads.

So we're safe here?

- Yeah, this is safe.
- Okay.

For the very first time of any of our
expeditions, we have armed bear guards with us.

We've been in areas that have
had incredibly large bear populations,

but Alaska is different.
The bears are bigger.

They're wilder.

And they're not used to humans.

And that makes them completely
unpredictable and much more dangerous.

They're hungry. They're just
waking up, you know.

They're coming out of dens, and
now's a very active time for these bears.

It can be fatal
very, very quickly.

Having these armed guards does
change the feel of the expedition.

And even though they will be
watching from behind the scenes,

there is a constant present walking
reminder that you're in danger.

But at the end of the day, our mission is to
document a previously undocumented species.

And the only way to do that
is to take that risk.

This island holds
a lot of secrets.

The community of Prince of Wales is very
close-knit, so getting information hasn't been easy.

So I'm gonna go
to one of the only places

where people might be willing to
talk about their bigfoot encounters.

The local watering hole.

- Hey, how's it going, man?
- Hey, how you doing?

- What can I get for you?

or reports of, uh, bigfoot.

I'm researching the,
the topic of... of bigfoot.

Bigfoot. Bigfoot.

I was wondering if you guys have
ever heard or seen any stories like that?

- Yes.
- Yeah.

I've seen something.

I've heard quite a bit
of stories around the island.

Yeah, you hear stories,
occasionally.

Everybody you know
has got a bigfoot story here.

Yeah.

I have to admit,
I was pretty startled

that almost everyone in that
bar had a bigfoot story to tell.

Something was throwing
huge rocks into the lake.

I looked just in time to see...
catch this rock landing at my feet.

You know, it could have hit me over
the head with a rock if it wanted to,

- but I think it was probably more, like...
- -Yeah.

"Hey, I'm here,
and this is my area."

And many of these stories not only have
taken place in and around our target zone,

but the follow the pattern of bigfoot behavior
that we've experienced on our expeditions.

I hear this like
this loud "woosh."

A friend of mine
could hear them.

What, what kind of noises
were they making?

- Vocalizing.
- Hmm.

What do you think that was?

My only explanation would be
that that was most likely bigfoot.

But then there was these two gentlemen
who told me about this bigfoot behavior

that we've never
experienced before.

You know, I've, I've spent enough
time in the woods, ever since I was a kid.

- And I don't get spooked, you know?
- Mmm-hmm.

But, there's, sometimes, there's
things that just aren't quite... Right.

There is a, there is a tree, that's, that's,
stuffed in the ground upside down out there.

The roots are right up upside down, and there's
no way that a logger, helicopter, anything,

would've put it right there.

- So it had been uprooted, literally, and...
- Turned upside down.

- ...turned upside down and stuffed back down...
- Stuffed in the ground.

- ...in the ground.
- And there's no machine marks on 'em.

There's nothing, you know?

You think those are markers
of a sacred place?

Definitely.

Expedition after expedition, we've encountered
tree manipulations and tree structures.

But we're in Alaska now.

Everything is different here.

What if these upside down trees
these guys were talking about

is the Alaskan version
of a tree structure?

Either way, this is definitely
something worth looking into.

Sure.

Had you guys
ever gone up that way?

No. I don't go there at all.

This is about
where I heard the scream.

And as it was moving through,
it left behind

These plants here
are called devil's club.

And it covers the entire area.

The spikes on them
are incredibly sharp.

People have lost eyes
inadvertently walking into them.

But these new dangers here in Alaska
are providing us with new evidence

that we may not be able
to find anywhere else.

And it is incredibly useful
because it's a bit of a DNA trap.

I mean, what's really
interesting, Ronny, is that

these are a lot lighter.

- Look at how white that is.
- Yeah.

You know, there's reports, right,
when it comes to bigfoot in certain areas,

that they are black, more dark.

Northwest, more reddish-brown.

But they've also
seen white ones.

- White bigfoot?
- White bigfoot.

Like a yeti?

Yeah, like the yeti
in the Himalayas, for example.

The yeti is a legendary
white-haired bipedal giant

that has been reported in the snow-covered
mountains of the Himalayas for thousands of years.

Eyewitness accounts describe a
towering presence with a face of a monster

and a terrifying scream
that can be heard for miles.

So, to me, it's almost like the
different regions have different species.

I mean, animals can be
in the same species.

I mean, look at humans, right?

There's all sorts of
different hair color.

So many animals really
blend in to their environment.

So, for example, there are primates that live in
the cloud forest that are completely all white.

So with all the snow in Alaska, who's
to say that's not happening with bigfoot?

You know, the fact that
we have this water source.

And we have these strange hairs
being caught on this devil's club.

I mean, this could be their spot
that they're coming to to hunt, to fish.

And then you came across
those deer bones last night.

And then we heard those screams.

What if we're in
their hunting grounds?

Hmm, that's interesting.

Predators don't like it when something
comes between them and their prey.

And I think just like those
loggers running for their lives,

we're encroaching
on their hunting grounds.

And it's not a coincidence that we
both heard that scream in the night.

But one thing that I've learned is when
something is trying to push you away,

that means that you're on
the right track.

I mean, this area feels
like this is the spot.

This place is just as scary in the
daytime as it is in the nighttime.

Two miles east of base camp, Russell
is investigating the area where last night,

he found what appeared to be an
animal skin hanging from a branch.

What the hell was this thing?

Whoa, check it out,
look at this, look at this!

Look at that. That's hair.

Six feet up on the trunk
of this tree, hair samples.

If there's any DNA on this,
this could be amazing.

What's gonna be out here
that's white?

I wanna collect that
and take it with us.

And the big question is, is that

whatever was hanging there?

Or is that what put it up there?

Look at this.

Something stepped right here.
That's a big track.

This looks like a drag mark.

And that moss
has been pushed down.

That's obvious as it gets.

Something from this area stepped through and
it was dragging something in that direction.

Step, step, drag.

That defies all logic.

From what it looked like,
what we were chasing

started dragging that thing
across the forest floor.

Already in such a short amount
of time that we've been in Alaska,

things are starting
to bust wide open.

Now, the chase is on.

This is where it gets fun.

It's headed this direction.

Whatever it is,
it's time to follow it.
