coming after us

and looked at us and opened
its mouth.

Perhaps this leads to a story
of something stranger
going on in these woods.

This place is just teeming
with bugs and life and flora
and fauna and...

Sounded like a woman
screaming but...

[Ronny] Last night's audio
was amazing.

We got different sounds
throughout the valley
and from different areas.

I feel like I have a very,
very good pinpoint
of where it came from,

and that's the ridge
directly opposite of me.

That is my next target.

[Bryce] Wow. Whatever
moved this trail camera,
it looks like it has hair.

[Mireya]
Wow, Bryce, that's crazy.

You guys are obviously
very close to what
we're looking for,

so just stay on track.

Looks like a heel.
You want to point it out?

I cannot say that
it's out of the realm
of human possibility.

We are going to cover up
the print

so that we can come back
tomorrow morning and scan it.

We're getting a step closer
to getting the answers
to what we're looking for.

Whatever made this print
is a big animal walking in

Crazy storm just
came out of nowhere.

into their investigation,

when we covered that one

the rain came down
a lot heavier this time.

We really can't see
the definition of that
arch anymore.

excited to see this
and peeling it away

and seeing that it was gone,
my heart just sank.

That is frustrating.

But sometimes the things that
happen aren't things you want.

you cannot let your emotions
overrun you to the point

where you risk

forward in order to find

There's definitely
some action. It's here.

They're completely pushed down
in that direction.

Something stepped on this.

When I'm out
tracking gorillas,

one of the ways in which
we're able to find them
once they've moved

from one location to the other
is by looking
at the vegetation.

Something came through here,
and actually from here,

you can see that its path
was in this direction
where the footprint was.

Whatever was coming through
that area was rather large,

leaving a trail that we could
actually follow.

The fact that we didn't see
this yesterday means whatever
made it

may have been here
in the last few hours.

[Ronny]
I think it makes sense.

Gonna make our way
up to the top.

We're not too far
from the top here, so...

to the top of the ridge,

where he believes one of the
howls they heard two days ago
may have originated.

[Russell] I think one of those
sounds is coming from the
ridge right across from us.

Now that I'm up at the top,
I'm hoping there's some
evidence left behind.

And who knows?
Maybe whatever made that sound
is still here.

I smell such a strong smell
right now.

I smell something
really, really gamy.

Right now, I'm walking
southeast along this ridge,

and one thing I will always do
is walk into the wind.

I can smell what I'm walking
into, but it can't smell me.

That's definitely the best
method of actually moving
out here.

You don't want to give up
your presence.

You don't want to give
yourself away, especially
when you're tracking

something that can be close
by and potentially dangerous.

Look at that.
That's interesting.

This stuff is actually...

Looks like a big tuft of fur
or hair, but it doesn't match

what I know is deer,
elk or bear hair.

So I think I'm gonna get
my tweezers out and bag that.

Interesting.
That's a lot of hair.

It's in an evidence bag.
It's sealed.

We can put it
under a microscope

and run it against
the database to see
if it has earmarks

of either human DNA
or primate.

Before we come into an area,
we make sure to put the word
out in advance.

Sort of like a tip line,

And, you know, that gets
directed right to my phone.

So I've been receiving
all kinds of text messages
and e-mails

about things people have seen
in the area,

and I'm actually
kind of looking
for a place I can pull over

and check some of these out.

So I get tons of these emails,
people sending me what looks
like evidence

that they think is worth
investigating.

Here's one of a possible
footprint.

It's hard to make out.

"Bigfoot tree structure
right outside my window."

That's interesting, although
relatively inconclusive.

"I took this photo
in my backyard.
You should come investigate."

Not much to see there.

I mean, that's the thing.

Even some of the best
Bigfoot photos and videos,

it's hard to see
what people are talking about.

I've never seen before.

does Bigfoot have claws?"

Okay, here's... Oh, wow.

Bigfoot with claws,

but I mean, that certainly
looks like a human hairy hand.

I think this is worth
showing to the team.

to know what you guys think.

claws, it actually looks like
a human hand.

don't have claws.

We have fingernails.

And this thing very clearly
has claws.

We're thinking this thing
is bigger than what it is.

I mean, this could be
a raccoon's hand, right?

If you look at the knot
on the plastic bag, it
gives you a slight reference.

So it does look big.

Ronny, let me ask you,

have you ever heard
of any type of Bigfoot stories
about those creatures

having claws
or anything like that?

You know, when it comes
to Bigfoot hands, right,

no one's actually seen
the hand

to know if there's claws
or not. It's kind of a mix,

so there's some people that
believe that they have claws,

there's others that believe
that they're more humanlike
and have more fingernails.

So the jury's out on that.

let me do some research
and see what I can find out.

Makes me wonder, what is this
creature with humanlike hands

and claws that are
roaming the hills
of southeastern Kentucky.

I don't know, but we
definitely need to find out.

from the tall grass

that appeared to have been
pushed down by a large animal.

through that area
was rather large

and had trampled
all of the vegetation
in that area,

leaving a trail
that we could actually follow.

If whatever pushed down
that grass is still using
this trail,

there may be some evidence
still left behind.

[Ronny sighs] Do you see
any tracks or anything?

-[Mireya] Not yet.
-[Ronny] Nothing, huh?

-We'll never find prints with
the understory like this...

...so we're gonna need
to find something bigger,
like tree structure, nest.

[narrator] According to
researchers, there are two
types of structures

that Bigfoot are believed
to build. First are nests.

These possible habitats,
like the one they found last
year,

may contain valuable evidence.

[Ronny]
This is a [bleep] nest.

Ideally, we'd want to be able
to collect anything
that could provide some DNA.

[narrator] The second
are what researchers call
tree structures.

These are large branches

or sometimes entire trees
arranged in unnatural
patterns.

Oftentimes they appear
like teepees

but have been reported to
take on a variety of shapes.

There are several theories
as to what purpose they serve.

When it comes
to tree structures,

there's some different schools
of thought.

A lot of researchers,
including myself,

believe they're a form
of communication.

These are almost
like road signs.

We think
they could be indicators

that the area has some
importance to them.

Last year, Russell found
what looked like

were the remnants
of a tree structure.

Oh, wow. Do you see that?

[Bryce] And later that day,
he found the nest.

So us finding the tree
structure would be huge.

A lot of different
tree structures,
they'll use live trees

that are still rooted
and bend them over...

and then interweave it
with other types of trees.

-Look at that.
-Right.

Yeah.

When you're going through
and you see one or two trees
leaning and falling,

you just have to let that go.

Yeah, that's not
a tree structure.

But then you start to see
things that may have four
or five intertwined.

That's the stuff
that we're looking for.

-What's that up there?
-Whoa!

-That looks freshly broken.
-Yeah. Peculiar, right?

That doesn't look much like
a tree structure,
but maybe a nest.

[Mireya]
What have we got here?

Good little spot
to hunker down, right?

Just gonna see if there's
any prints or anything
that I can see easily.

A nest is very likely
to contain some sort of
physical evidence

and one that was built
and had an intention
behind it,

hands needed to put things
together, would be a great
find.

It's a interesting mixture
of obviously old fallen stuff

and then what looks like
freshly broken.

There's not a lot of evidence
of an intention
to make a structure down here.

And if anything
was bedding down,

we'd probably see
little bit of hairs
getting snagged.

That's what I was looking for.

the area where he believes
a Bigfoot howl originated,

Russell hears sounds
of a large animal walking
towards him.

Something just passed by,
not more than 20-30 yards
from me.

Something ran through
the bush. Whatever it was,
it just moved...

from back behind the camp
and just kept going straight
out.

Now it's moving away from me
to the east, getting further
away every second.

I need to follow it.

[Ronny] Did we find the trail?

-[Mireya] Yeah.
-[Ronny] Jeez.

[Mireya] It's unbelievable how
fast you could get lost here.

[narrator] For eight miles,
Ronny and Mireya
has been following the trail

that led directly from
an area of pressed down grass.

The team is using red light
technology,

which has far less impact
on the eyes than traditional
flashlights.

That means they're much less
observable from a distance.

It's such an advantage
to be nocturnal.

I mean, you realize
how much we rely
on our vision...

-and how poor
our night vision is.

As I got closer, that smell

-We seem to have stumbled upon

a bear den on the trail,
and it has me on high alert.

I'm waiting for something
to pop up right behind
those rocks.

We've been at this
for hours here.

-And this trail seems
to go on forever.

We are up against
an incredibly dense population
of black bears here.

And we can see that this trail
goes on for miles and miles.

Why don't we call it a night?

It's just too dangerous.
You can't keep going.

Starting to feel that way too.

It sounds like you guys
are frustrated, but I do have
a contingency plan.

I have a contact
who has access to some
military-grade equipment,

and it's a little bit
experimental.

But if what I understand
about this tech is right,

not only can it locate
living things,

but it can tell you
and discern exactly

what those living things are
and where you can find them.

I mean, perhaps we're dealing
with some sort of sub species

of Bigfoot that's
unique to this area.

And if that's the case,
then there has to be some
sort of record of it.

Luckily for me, I found a
local historian, and she has a
collection of Bigfoot stories

that goes back 100 years.

So I can't wait to talk to her
and see if I could make heads
or tails

of what that picture is of.

-Throughout the years,

they see 'em,
lots of human-like creatures,

primate creatures,
Bigfoot creatures.

you're so knowledgeable about
the history of this area.

How far back
does the record go
of people reporting large,

hairy bipedal creatures
in these mountains?

Um, I'm going to say they go
back into the 1800s.

There was actually a newspaper
article where there was

a, um, a hairy man,
a wild man.

And people described him
as human-like,

but covered with hair,
gigantic.

That's incredible.
Is a record of that or...

Yes. Actually, there is
a newspaper article

This one says, "A wild man,

There seems to be
a distinct sound in this area

that no one can attribute
to anything,

bears, elk, whatever.
The closest I can come to

-is a coyote
that verges on human.
-That's incredible.

That sounds exactly like
what the team heard
in the field a few nights ago.

-I want to just read
a little bit of this here.
-Sure, yeah.

"A party is being organized
to explore a cave
where the creature

is believed to have his lair
and attempt to capture him."

That word "lair"
sticks out to me.

I know there's a lot of cave
systems and abandoned mines
around here.

Do you think that this
creature is possibly using
these caves

as a place to hide out?

The cave systems,
the old mine shafts
will be the perfect place...

-Mmm-hmm.
-...to, uh, stay safely,
sleep safely.

And just another way
that this creature
has remained undetected.

This is incredible.

I mean, it sounds crazy,
but according to that article,

perhaps Bigfoot in this area
have claws.

And if that's the case and
this photograph is exactly
what we've been looking for.

Based on this story
of Bigfoot's hand

and all the other stories
you've collected,

it sounds like Southeastern
Kentucky is a hot spot.

The mountains holds
so many mysteries,

and there's all these accounts

throughout the years
of something being here.

There's just so many places
in this area

-that people haven't explored.

I do think that there
has been a presence

of these creatures in Kentucky
for hundreds of years.

but they're also putting

anything that's organic,

that putting out an
electromagnetic signal.

If it's within range and
it's got any kind of energy,
we can pick it up.

a highly-advanced system

that scans the area
for electromagnetic waves
given off by living organisms.

Because each type of animal
gives off electromagnetic
energy

at a unique frequency,

this system can locate animals
at a great distance
and identify the species.

the hollers with the most
activity so that we can hone
in on those.

So if we find a lot of prey,
we can find Bigfoot with this.

deer will show up
at a frequency
of around three hertz,

elk at five hertz
and bear at six hertz.

From this position, they'll
be able to search hollows
within a two-mile radius

and any pockets that contain
large amounts of game
will be revealed.

This is pointing and in
a particular zone right now,

so we can determine if there's
any life there, any activity

and just reposition it
to find where we need to go.

Yeah, and right now
we're looking right
down the holler.

something moving through

at this particular holler.

Can we reposition it

it up and move it

a mysterious structure.

like weaved and stacked
on each other,

it's like this is not
dead fall,

and you have to ask yourself,

"why would a human being
do this?"
It doesn't make sense.

This tree structure
stood out like a sore thumb.

And we got really excited
because it was one
of the first

real big pieces of evidence
that we had,

aside from that footprint
that just got washed away.

Where did this come from?

That is a big frickin' branch.

It looks like it came
from here,
but how did it get there?

There are also
a lot of other signs
around the structure.

my guess is there's probably
another one close by, too.

a very unusual structure
in the woods.

It looks about 10 feet high.

A bunch of different,
uh, limbs and everything
put together.

It looks like a classic
tree structure.

so I could get eyes on it?

Oftentimes,
tree structures
are an indicator

that there's something
else important nearby.

and it's really difficult
to tell

if there's any tracks
or footprints.

So the game plan
is to come back
during the day

when we can
actually look for this stuff.

My fear is that trying
to do that now

may actually compromise
the site.

I want to make sure
we don't contaminate anything,

so that we can, in fact,
take any DNA sample

or look for hair samples
that might be there.

Mireya, what's your impression
of this?

Have you ever seen
anything like this before?

[Mireya] Wildlife that I know
that is out here,

none of those
would have made it.

No, but it's not
like a random tree structure
that some kid set up.

I mean, put it this way.

The moment I saw it, I really
knew what Ronny had been
looking for all along.

This thing looked so out
of place, like, it was really
purposefully built.

Something with intelligence
made this.

And it could be
right next to you guys,
and you wouldn't even know it.
