[suspenseful music playing]

[Ginny] Do you ever wake up from a dream…

and you have the feeling
that you've had that dream before?

[dramatic sting]

-[Matthews] Order, please.
-Objection.

[Matthews] Order, please.

[Foley] Objection.

-Overruled.
-[crowd murmuring]

[suspenseful music playing]

Austin…

what do you mean?

[Austin breathing shakily]

We were
playing hide-and-seek… [pants, inhales]

…and I was hiding in the cabinet.

[Austin breathing shakily]

And I saw my dad put…

a pillow over his face.

[crowd gasps, murmurs]

[softly] Oh my God.

[breathes deeply]

[footsteps departing]

[breathing deeply]

[dramatic sting]

[whispers] Austin.

[tense music playing]

[whispers] Come here.

Ginny, what are you doing here?

Simone doesn't think Mom has a chance.

Oh.

Gil's taking you away.

What?

[inhales] He told me

once Mom goes to jail,
he's moving you to Michigan.

Forever?

[inhales] He's not a good guy, Austin.

[Austin gasps]

He did that?

-What do we do?
-You remember what the fancy lawyer said?

It's a m*rder trial.
We have to give them a m*rder*r.

That's Mom.

Maybe.

Who?

Cynthia?

What if Gil was there that night?

[tense music continues]

We already know that he's violent.

He has a criminal record. He'd be perfect.

But we don't have a motive.
Why would he do it?

[exhales]

-Austin, I know.
-[breathing shakily]

But it's your dad or your mom.
You have to pick.

[Ginny] It's like a video game hack.

Like I've dreamed this before.

So, what used to be a nightmare,

I know the twists and turns.

[Simone] Did you block
his apartment application?

Well, yes. But--

Did you know
that Gil had a history of violence?

I suspected it.

-You hate Georgia Randolph.
-[Cynthia] What? No.

But you blocked her
from the neighborhood club.

You've accused her
of stealing funds from her job.

You've even been heard
saying that she's trash.

That she was, quote, "an evil wh*re

who used an accent and a V-neck
to bag the mayor," end quote.

Okay, I may have said, um--

You know, this defense has argued
that Tom rolled himself into the pillow.

But a medical examiner said,
without any uncertain doubt,

that a m*rder took place.

It couldn't have been an accident.

But Georgia did not place that pillow.

Did Gil often pick up Austin
from playdates?

He had from time to time.

Is it possible
that in your confused state,

in your deep grief,

that perhaps you forgot to mention
that Gil was there?

No.

Could he have been?

Is it possible that maybe he showed up
and you maybe didn't notice?

[suspenseful music playing]

Could he have heard you tell Georgia that
you blocked his apartment application,

and then he went
and took it out on your husband?

Left, only to show up at Georgia's house

and then physically threatened her.

[suspenseful music continues]

Just asking

if that could have happened.

[dramatic sting]

[insistent knocking on door]

[Cynthia] Ginny.

I saw my mom do it.

And maybe now…
maybe now you can understand

why she is the way she is.

I mean, she has to make hard decisions

to take care of the people
that she cares about.

And she cares about you.

She-- In her own twisted way, she does.

Ginny, this is inappropriate.
You need to leave now.

Well, if she didn't care,

why didn't she tell everyone
you were having an affair with Joe?

That makes you look really bad.

But she hasn't.

How did you know about that?

Okay, you need to go now.

[suspenseful music playing]

[inhales] You don't care
about her or us, fine.

But there are cameras at Blue Farm.

I have the footage.

I could give it to her lawyer,

and then suddenly,
things look really bad for you.

My mom might not drag you down
with her, but I would.

[dramatic sting]

[suspenseful music continues]

[Simone] Cynthia, could
that have happened?

[suspenseful music swells]

[Yang] And now,
I'd like to introduce Virginia Miller

of the Boston Youth Poet Laureate Contest.

[crowd applauds]

Woo-hoo!

Yeah!

[Ginny] The name of this poem…

[door closes]

-[chair scraping]
-[Ginny chuckles]

The name of this poem,
because names are very important…

[chuckles]

The name of this poem is "Beginnings."

Here we are, starting fresh

But I don't remember
What it feels like to feel whole

How do you fix a hole in your chest?

A Band-Aid? Cold compress?

If a tree falls in the wood

Would it make a sound
If no one was around to swing the axe

To cut off my head
And stop the train of thoughts

To derail the track
And divert from the one-track mind I have?

Having to go through things
That make you strong weakens you

It's a catch-22
So, what do you do?

The flame, the heat

Licking at my skin to a beat
A rhythm, a release

The flame consumes me

I eat the pain, or it eats me

A cavernous, carnivorous beast
With an insatiable appetite

And I'm just a bite, and I'm gone

As who I once was goes up in flames

[inhaling]

I'm trying to change, to grow

To tie this all up in a neat, tidy bow

But I'll never know right and wrong
Weak and strong

A binary that already has complexities
And shades of gray

And I just want to be okay

I can't keep burning through life this way

Will it ever stop?

There can't be more shoes that drop

I need hope that all will be well

That my heart will swell and fill the hole

I need to accept what I can't control

The secrets are told
There's nothing new to learn or unfold

I need peace
To gather the pieces of my soul

Or I will burn until there is nothing left

[exhales]

[crowd applauding]

[crowd murmuring]
