Hey everybody and welcome
to a BattleBots

Fight Night Special Event.

The Win and You're In
Desperado flash tournament.

Tonight, one bot will punch
its lucky ticket

to the playoffs
for the 2018 World Championship

and become the very first team

with a guaranteed shot
at this year's title.

I'm Chris Rose,
here with a man who has faced

some of the most fearsome
fighters on earth,

UFC legend, Kenny Florian.

Thanks, Chris.

I've seen some tough
fights in my day,

but nothing compared
to what the bots here

are up against tonight.

This is gonna be epic.

CHRIS:
Here's how we got here,

at the midway point of the year,

anyone who felt like
their chances of

making the top 16
were starting to fade

threw their hats into the ring.

Out of that group,
eight robots were chosen

and slotted into a bracket.

Now in order to win this thing,

it'll take three hard-earned
victories all tonight.

Losers go back to the field to
finish out the regular season,

but I gotta tell ya,

they're facing
nearly impossible odds

at earning a playoff berth.

Way to put
the pressure on 'em.

It's a huge reward.
It's also a huge risk.

You're gonna take
a lot of hits.

One too many,
and you could be knocked out

of commission completely.

CHRIS:
So let's take a look
at our eight teams.

We have a varied field
of experience and design.

Relative newcomers,
like Valkyrie and Double Dutch,

chiseled veterans
like Hypothermia and Lucky,

and legends like Gigabyte
and, of course,

winner of six Giant Nuts,
Donald Hutson and Lock-Jaw.

We've got seven fights tonight.

We'll show you two opening round
matches in their entirety

as well as highlights
from the other two.

And you'll see every second
of the semi-finals

and finals in all their glory.

But let's kick things off
with our number-three seed,

Lucky versus the sixth seed
multi-bot Gemini.

Faruq, the original Desperado,
take it away my man.

[AUDIENCE CHEERING]

Ladies and gentlemen,
are you ready?

[AUDIENCE YELLING]

It's robot fighting time!

[APPLAUSE AND CHEERING]

In the red square,

you might as well call
these bots the Olsen Twins

because they're Scary Kate
and Smashley,

it's about to be a Full House
of robot parts.

It's Gemini!

CHRIS:
Kenny, Gemini is one of
the lesser known participants

who's had
only one fight this year.

KENNY:
Yeah, Chris, they felt
they haven't had a chance

to fully showcase
what they're capable of

and see this tournament
as their best opportunity

at making the top 16.

FARUQ:
In the blue square,

whatever happens
in the Battle Box,

slays in the Battle Box.

Watch out or you're crap out,

it's time to roll the dice
against Lucky!

CHRIS:
Here's Lucky
coming off an epic rebuild

against Son of Whyachi, Kenny.

KENNY:
Yeah, Lucky has a reputation
for being extremely durable.

Winning three fights
in one night is gonna take

a top-notch crew able to handle
even the toughest rebuilds.

This tournament is gonna be
won and lost in the pits,

and team Lucky might just
be up for the challenge.

The Desperado Fight,
it's a chance at redemption.

We started off really bad,
lost a couple of matches.

This is a chance, in my view,
at redemption

and getting right back in there.

We have a very limited parts
library for rebuild,

but we're very good at making
new parts on short notice.

We're confident
we can take them.

ROBOT:
Robots activate.

CHRIS:
Gemini versus Lucky.

What's the strategy here, Kenny?

KENNY:
Well, because Gemini's
multi-bots are of equal weight,

Lucky has to disable both
to get a knockout.

It has to stay squared up
and avoid getting flanked.

Gemini wants to use its agility
to overwhelm Lucky.

And remember,
this is single elimination.

Not only do these teams
have to win,

they have to survive
and rebuild.

ROBOT:
Red Team, ready?

Blue team, ready?

[AUDIENCE APPLAUDING]

[ROBOTIC MELODY PLAYING]

CHRIS:
It's the Desperado Tournament.

Win three fights
and you're in the top 16.

Who's gonna grab
that golden ticket?

Here we go.

[BUZZING]

Let the bot battle begin!

And here comes Lucky
out of the gate,

driving backwards saying, okay,

which of you is coming at me?

Which one? Which one?

KENNY:
Lucky sizing up
the Geminis, Chris.

A little tentative to begin.

Lucky doing a good--
Whoa! Nice flip!

[KENNY EXCLAIMING]

Taking a nice bite out
of one of the Geminis,

but it's still working.

Sizing it up the other one--
Yeah get out of my face!

KENNY:
Oh, wow!

CHRIS:
You get out
of my face, too, bro!

Yeah, you want some more?

KENNY:
Tossing bots
left and right, I love it.

CHRIS:
What a way to open
the night, come on.

Dude, it's like
a Dwayne Johnson movie

where they just keep
attacking ya.

Come on, I'll take you on.

KENNY:
This is the most effective
we have seen Lucky

and that flipper
almost got another one.

We know these
pneumatic flippers have

a limited number of shots,

but Lucky not pulling
any punches so far.

CHRIS:
Whoa!

That red Gemini's lucky
to still be in box, Kenny.

Lucky almost doing
a bronco there.

Are you surprised neither
of the blades of the Geminis

have done any damage
to Lucky yet?

KENNY:
Well, that wedge
has been working very well.

How smart is this from Lucky
to use the box behind him?

Who's coming? Who's coming?
You gotta engage.

CHRIS:
Excellent driving by Kurtis.

Nice job there. Yeah!

KENNY:
Next time two guys
try to attack me,

that's what I'm gonna do.

I'm gonna keep
the wall behind me.

CHRIS:
Lucky's flipper
looks a little stuck, Kenny.

That could be a problem.

KENNY:
Why aren't both bots
going at him

at the same time?
CHRIS: That's what I'd say.

KENNY:
It's like a movie
where I'm going,

why don't both guys
just attack the good guy?

CHRIS:
They've been watching too many
Bruce Lee movies, Kenny.

KENNY:
That flipper
has suffered some damage.

It is stuck.
CHRIS: Yeah.

It's not getting in
the down position,

so now Lucky's
kind of a sitting duck.

Whoa, and now they're
starting to chop away.

Lucky losing a wheel.

KENNY:
Seems like Gemini may have
been playing the long game here.

It might be paying off.

Now going after Lucky,

but Lucky changing tactics here,
leading with his rear.

With that flipper down,
team Lucky is improvising.

CHRIS:
Well, I think you mean
the flipper's up, Kenny.

But we get the point.

Oh! Nice shot there.

Oh, Gemini out, just aided--

Oh, did it again!

Uh-oh.

KENNY:
Maybe that's why
they didn't attack

at the same time, Chris.

They don't wanna
k*ll each other.

CHRIS:
Maybe they've got
relationship issues?

I'm getting out
of the way, go for it.

KENNY:
Well, one of the horizontal
spinners is out--

Both of them are gone.
KENNY: Oh, wow.

Both of them
are useless right now,

and I think it was that hit
when they hit each other.

CHRIS:
All three main weapons,

the flipper on Lucky
and the horizontal spinners

on Gemini are dead.

Whoa, the Pulverizer's
taken a chop

out of one of the Gemini.

KENNY:
This is some amazing driving
here from Lucky, though.

I am really impressed.

The way he's backing Gemini
into the wall is genius, Chris.

His weapon is down,
so he's using his strength

and the box to his advantage.

Great strategy here.

CHRIS:
Only one Gemini left standing
as Lucky pushes him away.

Uh-oh, get off those
k*ll Jaws, Lucky.

You could be in trouble,
but it's not gonna matter.

What a tasty fight
to kick things off here

as it goes the distance.

It keeps the crowd
on the edge of their seat.

[BUZZER BLARING]
REF: We're done, guys.

CHRIS:
The judges will
have a lot to think about

knowing how crucial
their decision is

in shaping this tournament.

And there they are.

Naomi Kyle, Derek Young,
and Alison Haislip.

Kenny, I was getting
pancake hungry

with all the flipping
I was seeing out there.

KENNY:
Lucky absolutely
launched these multi-bots

all over the box.

CHRIS:
How about the driving
by Kurtis of Lucky, right?

KENNY:
Amazing driving, both
offensively and defensively.

Driving his backside at Gemini
allowed them to hit each other,

and that was pretty much
the end for Gemini.

CHRIS:
So let's go to Faruq

to find out who our first
official semi-finalist is.

The results
from the judges are in.

[AUDIENCE CHEERING]

Lucky!

[CROWD CHEERING]

Kenny, I'm really happy
for Mark Demers and Lucky

because that was the best they
have performed in BattleBots.

KENNY:
By far.

CHRIS:
So after punching
Gemini around the box,

Lucky moves on to the next round
and is now one step closer

to earning that automatic
playoff berth.

Now we'll travel
to the top of the bracket

to see the number eight seed,
the crusher Kraken,

take on the number one seed,
the legendary Lock-Jaw.

And Kenny, I didn't
expect to see someone

with Donald Hutson's pedigree
in this tournament.

KENNY:
Yeah, the 20-year veteran
is sitting at 1-2

after a couple of tough losses
in the regular season.

But with his strength
of schedule,

another quality win
and a 2-2 record

might have given him
a shot at the top 16.

But this guy knows the pits,

and he's decided
to bet on himself

and his ability
to win three fights

and capture an automatic
playoff berth.

His first test is against
the number 8 seed

the crusher, Kraken.

Let's take it inside the box.

[AUDIENCE ROARING]

In the red square,

this snake is straight
from the Garden of Beatin',

bringing a fight
of biblical proportions,

and that's the gospel truth.

It's Kraken!

CHRIS:
The 0-2 Kraken looking
for the upset here, Kenny.

KENNY:
Yeah, Chris,
they were ineffective

in their two rumble losses

and they'll have their work
cut out for them here,

but if they can utilize those
jaws at just the right moment,

they have a chance to make
things interesting.

FARUQ:
In the blue square,

this bot is no punching bag.

It's tough, it's a stallion,
I don't think it's Italian.

[AS ROCKY]
Yo, Adrian, it's me, Locky.

[NORMAL VOICE]
Give it up for Lock-Jaw!

[AUDIENCE CHEERING]

CHRIS:
First time this Desperado event
has happened, Kenny.

Are you surprised other
big name bots like Lock-Jaw

didn't take the opportunity?

KENNY:
Well, Chris,
it's always a gamble

trying something unfamiliar
like this Desperado Tournament.

But Donald has been an engineer
for over three decades.

He's a math and science guy
and this is a calculated risk.

He has two robots and is well
prepared for this journey.

There is a reason
he's the number one seed.

The matches I've lost so far
have been just weird situations.

But Kraken has been
having their own issues,

so we're both kinda
in the same boat.

Not gonna think about it.

One match at a time

and just gonna take
these opportunities

to try and advance.

The Desperado is
for robots like ours.

We get in here and we just
had one problem after another.

This is last chance,
just go at it.

If we can just get
one good bite on him,

then it's over for him.

ROBOT:
Robots activate.

CHRIS:
Tale of two strategies
here, right Kenny?

KENNY:
Absolutely, Chris.
Lock-Jaw is multi-dimensional.

He can flip you into the screws

or he can flank you
with his driving skills

and attack you from all sides.

But with Kraken,
it's all about that crusher

and staying upright.

It doesn't have that
self-righting capability

that Lock-Jaw has,

so he needs to keep Donald
in front of him at all costs.

[ROBOTIC MELODY PLAYING]

CHRIS:
Lock-Jaw, Kraken.

This is the Yankees versus

the triple A team
you've never heard of.

But tonight, they both have
a chance to win three fights

and capture a spot
in the top 16.

Let the bot battle begin!
And here comes Kraken!

Uh-oh, is Donald having
driving issues already?

Oh-h*, he's got
teeth issues as in,

he's got a Kraken's grill.

KENNY:
Lock-Jaw in trouble.

This is a nightmare
start for Donald.

Kraken has got the jaws.
CHRIS: Oh, he's sinking it in.

KENNY:
And it's right into
that primary weapon, as well.

CHRIS:
That's right, Kenny.

Those fangs are awfully close
to that weapon belt.

This could be an upset
in the making.

KENNY:
This is exactly what
Donald Hutson wanted to avoid.

It was a perfect bite
there from Kraken.

CHRIS:
That's 20 seconds,
so Kraken has to release.

Donald survives.

Let's see if there's any
lasting effects from that bite.

Scary stuff for Lock-Jaw.

Let's see how Donald's
weapon is working.

It's firing up.

Donald trying to get
to those tires, Kenny.

h*-h*, look at that driving.

Knocked forward. Uh-oh!

Ooh, he avoids another
chomp down of Kraken.

KENNY:
Great driving
for the veteran there.

CHRIS:
Now Donald's
got ahold of Kraken.

Takes him into the rail.

KENNY:
Lock-Jaw using those forks
to his advantage.

CHRIS:
Oh, and that's a little damage.

That spinner caught
Kraken in the air.

KENNY:
Kraken wants
to avoid those screws.

CHRIS:
And again,
get Kraken off balance.

KENNY:
This is exactly what
Donald Hutson wanted here,

to get that angle he's got.

Be careful with those fangs
of Kraken, though.

Trying to bite down
on those tires.

CHRIS:
So Kraken holding
his own against Lock-Jaw.

No real damage to speak of,
but he ain't afraid.

Oh, Kraken's got
a hold of Donald,

but he gets away.
Such good driving.

KENNY:
Nice uppercut
from Lock-Jaw there.

CHRIS:
Oh, Kraken
stopped for a moment.

That might have been
Lock-Jaw's opportunity.

KENNY:
Lock-Jaw struggling to connect
with that spinner, Chris.

Kraken doing a decent job
of evading that weapon.

CHRIS & KENNY: Oh!
CHRIS: Huge hit right there.

KENNY:
Kraken's so close to biting
down again on Lock-Jaw.

Lock-Jaw with a couple hits,
no real damage though.

CHRIS:
So just over a minute to go
and Kenny, you have to say,

this is closer than we expected.

KENNY:
My score card is
really even at this point.

Whoa!
CHRIS: Oh!

Rear end, hit.

We spoke too soon, Kenny.

Oh, Kraken cannot self-right.

Will Donald Hutson and Lock-Jaw,
just let him sit there?

Hit it! Hit it!

CHRIS:
Matt Spurk is
begging Donald Hutson

to turn him over
and help him.

Hit it!

CHRIS:
So as the countdown begins,

I got news for ya, Matt.

It's Desperado time.

The chances of Donald
helping you here are zilch!

One! Knockout!

[BUZZER BUZZES]
That was close.

CHRIS:
Donald Hutson
with a crushing blow

in deciding not to help
his fallen opponent.

And the top seed
in the Desperado Tournament

advances to the semi-finals.

Kenny, Donald Hutson really
had to work in this fight.

KENNY:
Yeah, absolutely. He needed
every trick in the book

as far as his driving skills go.

Kraken really surprised me.

Even though it lost this fight,

this was its most
impressive performance.

Those fangs were locked into
that primary weapon on Lock-Jaw.

CHRIS:
Never really allowed
Donald Hutson and Lock-Jaw

to clamp and lift in the air,
which I thought was impressive,

but it was that one shot
that finished it off.

KENNY:
Exactly, attacking from the back

was the right choice there
from Donald Hutson and Lock-Jaw.

We knew if he had that shot,
if he was able to flip Kraken,

Kraken did not have
the ability to self-right.

And with this
Desperado Tournament,

he was gonna let Kraken be.

CHRIS:
So the first two slots
in the semi-finals

are now filled as Lock-Jaw
advances along with Lucky.

The Desperado
Tournament continues

with our next
quarter-final matchup.

The two seed, Gigabyte,

versus the seventh seed,
Double Dutch.

[CHEERING]

CHRIS:
Kenny, Double Dutch is 2-0.

So why are they here?

KENNY:
Well, they haven't faced
the strongest competition,

and without quality wins,

you can go undefeated
and still miss the top 16.

They are looking
to prove themselves here.

FARUQ:
In the blue square,

this colorful bot
spins to eliminate grins.

Boom goes the dynamite.

You're gonna die tonight.

It's Gigabyte!

CHRIS:
Gigabyte looking
to turn things around

after losing their only
regular season fight

against Tombstone.

KENNY:
For sure, Chris.

That full spinning body
of Gigabyte

can wreak havoc on its opponents
with its kinetic force.

Just need to make sure
it stays away

from the sides of the box.

CHRIS:

And it's lost a wheel, Kenny.

KENNY:
And there goes
another wheel, Chris.

Not a good start here
for Double Dutch.

CHRIS:
Oh!

KENNY:
Gigabyte picking it apart.

CHRIS:
Are you kidding me?

Oh, there goes the bottom blade.

Which one were
they saving, Kenny?

KENNY:
Uh, I don't know, but
they got the top blade working,

but I don't know for how long.

CHRIS:
So, Gigabyte up to full speed
and looking dangerous.

Oh! Oh no!
Oh, man!

Oh, that was--
But it's still moving, Kenny.

It's still moving.

KENNY:
I don't know
how he's moving, Chris.

CHRIS:
Remember, Gigabyte
wants to finish this.

Oh, my God!

KENNY:
It hit the box.

CHRIS:

with that huge hit that

sometimes full body
spinners stop working.

KENNY:

KENNY:

Well, finally,

somebody's come to their senses.

an emphatic victory

and one the box cleaning crew
is not too happy about.

CHRIS:
What a performance by Gigabyte.

CHRIS:
My goodness.

Hell of a bot.

CHRIS:
So Gigabyte moves on

to face Lucky
in the semi-finals.

featuring the horizontal
spinning fourth seed, Valkyrie,

versus the grappling, scrappy,
fifth seed, Hypothermia.

Veteran Fuzzy Mauldin,

KENNY:
Hypothermia will be looking
to get back on track

by using that wedge
to shield itself

from that horizontal spinner
of Valkyrie,

then grab ahold and use
the hazards to its advantage.

In the blue square,

she's no Queen of Hearts,

but her high power spinner says,
Off with your dreads!

Here comes the percussion
of destruction,

the conductor of carnage.

It's Valkyrie!

CHRIS:
Kenny, young newcomer
Leanne Cushing

and Valkyrie coming into this
tournament with a 1-1 record.

How does she capture
her first Desperado victory?

KENNY:
Well, Chris,
she'll be aiming to use that

horizontal disc spinner
to attack Hypothermia

where it's most vulnerable,
on its wheels

as well as in the back.

[ROBOTIC MELODY PLAYING]

AUDIENCE [CHANTING]:
Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight!

[BUZZER BLARING]

CHRIS:
Let the bot battle begin!

Valkyrie, Hypothermia

in the center of the box.

We got some sparks.
KENNY: Oh, big sparks!

CHRIS:
Man, Hypothermia
can take a licking.

KENNY:
Holy smokes, oh.

CHRIS:
Right on the nose! A huge shot

in Valkyrie's direction.

KENNY:
Fuzzy Mauldin
and Hypothermia

hoping to have Valkyrie
destroy itself with that wedge.

CHRIS:
Oh, uh-oh.

We got serious sparks
inside the Battle Box going.

A huge hit! Something just
flew off Fuzzy Mauldin.

KENNY:
It was a tire, the tire's gone.

CHRIS:
Wow!

But it's still moving somehow.

KENNY:
Well, he had a lot of confidence
in the durability of his bot.

He's taking a lot of big hits.

The back part of Hypothermia's
about to fall off, Chris.

CHRIS:
That tire on the left side
has just been shredded,

but somehow it's still
actually functional.

What, uh-oh. Valkyrie has lost
its primary weapon,

but she did a ton
of damage early.

Let's see if she can last
to the bell.

KENNY:
Yeah, and Hypothermia
isn't able to work.

That right tire is
about to fall off, Chris.

CHRIS:
Oh, no, so now it's become
a pushing and shoving match.

KENNY:
Hypothermia, got
a couple flat tires there.

CHRIS:
He's gotta a new GPS,
he's still walking around like

those penguins
in that commercial.

KENNY:
He's heading
to the mechanic shop

after this one, that's for sure.

CHRIS:
The fans calling
for them to fight,

but neither bot
can get it going.

Oh, here we go.

KENNY:
Limping around
the Battle Box right now,

trying to get ahold of Valkyrie.

CHRIS:
Trying to use
the weapons inside the box.

And uh-oh, getting caught
near the screws with Valkyrie,

but she gets away.

KENNY:
This is kind
of when both fighters are

just exhausted
and just kind of throwing

slow haymakers at each other.

This is what's
happening right here.

CHRIS:
Valkyrie's
gotta be ahead on points.

She's just gotta
outdrive him now.

Ah, but look
at Fuzzy Mauldin trying to

get Valkyrie into the screws and
can't get a good hold of her.

KENNY:
Yeah, this is the end of
every Rocky movie right here.[/i]

CHRIS:
Okay, ah, the k*ll saws
are now active

with under a minute to go.

KENNY:
Oh, Valkyrie somehow
dodging a k*ll saw.

CHRIS:
Kinda caught me sleeping there.

KENNY:
Hypothermia hanging on,
trying to get ahold of Valkyrie.

CHRIS:
Uh-oh.

KENNY:
And trying to avoid
those k*ll saws.

CHRIS:
Now the right wheel after
the k*ll saw got ahold of it

is real wobbly on Hypothermia.

KENNY:
If Valkyrie can hold on,

they might be able
to pull this off.

You can see Hypothermia
in bad shape right now.

Visually does not look good
if this goes to the judges.

CHRIS:
And the one chance
for Fuzzy Mauldin

and Hypothermia's
to grab Valkyrie

and throw her into the screws,

only has 10 seconds
left to do it.

As the crowd starts
the countdown

in a frustrating encounter,

this one will be
heading to the judges.

[BUZZER BLARING]

who the last member

in the semi-finals will be.

So the fourth seed, Valkyrie,

the number one seed, Lock-Jaw

as our semi-finals are now set.

and, Kenny,
what's the story here?

KENNY:

looked absolutely terrifying

in its first Desperado match-up,

showcasing their destructive
force against Double Dutch.

However, they took
some damage to their

self-righting mechanism
on that final hit.

They think they've fixed it
with a weld,

but unfortunately the real test
will come inside the box.

CHRIS:
And what about Lucky, Kenny?

Pretty exciting show
they put on earlier.

KENNY:
Yeah, spot on.
With Lucky, he was finally able

to orchestrate
his primary weapon,

flipping Gemini around
the box like ragdolls.

With his durable frame,

he captured his first
victory of 2018,

however he also sustained
some damage

denting that flipper
and losing some wheels.

Let's see if they made
any changes.

They had some work to do.

Let's get to it.

[CHEERING]

In the red square,

Kenny, it looks like Lucky has

changed their
configuration a bit.

Talk to me.
KENNY: Yeah, they've added

a new, larger armor plate

covering the entire front
of their bot.

They've also beaten that flipper
into more of a puncher

because of that previous damage.

FARUQ:
In the blue square,

CHRIS:
Kenny are my eyes right,

or does Gigabyte look
slightly different as well?

KENNY:
You're not that old, Chris.

Gigabyte has lost some length
on that self-righting mechanism,

they have installed a new piece
that's been fused together

with that quick weld
we mentioned.

What are your plans for

securing your position
in the top 16?

I don't think there's
anything, um, different.

We're gonna try to use
some really sharp blades,

come in and dig it.
Uh-huh.

And, uh, dig right in
and throw 'em around.

How difficult is it
to straighten your flipper?

Oh, it's crazy.

We cut it, we re-welded,
we hammered it,

heated it up,
we did everything we could.

But we got a little bit of
retraction issues on the weapon,

so we gotta get this done
in two or three hits, right?

[CROWD CHEERING]

ROBOT:
Robots activate.

CHRIS:
Man, I'm excited, Kenny.

KENNY:
Yeah, both of these bots
are not 100 percent, Chris.

This one is
a coin toss for sure.

I can't wait.

[ROBOTIC MELODY PLAYING]

[BUZZER BLARING]

CHRIS:
Let the bot battle begin!
It's Lucky on a charge.

Trying to get into Gigabyte
before it spins to full speed.

He already delivered
a shot!

KENNY:
That's where
Gigabyte needs to be

in the center of the Battle Box.

They don't wanna be
up against the edge.

[AUDIENCE GROANS]

CHRIS:
Let's see how much damage
that does to Gigabyte.

He's actually okay.

Wow, but he's up
against the screws.

Major rams for Lucky!

KENNY:
That's one flip so far, Chris.

CHRIS:
Uh-oh, Gigabyte near the screws.

Can Gigabyte self-right?
It's trying.

KENNY:
It's lost that
self-righting pole, Chris.

Yes!

CHRIS:
But without that pole,

Gigabyte's just a spinning top.

This could be a K-O!

Look at it spinning.
It's spinning.

Is it getting counted out yet?

Gigabyte, trying
to get back on its front.

KENNY:
Team Gigabyte
trying to spin it back up.

CHRIS:
Holy smokes!

This reminds me of the final
scene of Inception.

They're getting counted out.
Six.

CHRIS:
They're trying to self-right.
Can they get there?

Will Gigabyte wake
from this nightmare?

One, knockout!
They cannot.

Winners!

CHRIS:
An amazing shot by Lucky,

does in the favorite, Gigabyte.

[♪♪♪]

KENNY:
Wow, after sustaining damage
in that first-round fight,

Lucky knew they had limited
chances to use that flipper.

But they made each one count.

There he is getting underneath
and flipping Gigabyte.

That was the first one.

CHRIS:
Eventually,
when he got Gigabyte over,

the full body spinner lost
its self-righting mechanism.

As you can see, it bent off

as he was trying to twirl
itself back over.

So it basically had a nub

and Gigabyte was doing
everything he could

to get that spinner
back on its wheel,

but it just didn't work out.

Kenny, isn't it great
when you end up in a fight

and the strategy
works to perfection?

KENNY:
I mean, you gotta
give it up to Lucky.

That wedge
and weapon modification.

That's what it's all about.

Perfect game plan,

and it's earned them
a trip to the finals.

Ready to watch
the second semi-final?

CHRIS:
And Kenny, Donald Hutson
really had to work

in that quarter-final match-up,
but once he found his lane,

Lock-Jaw looked dangerous.

KENNY:
Yeah, Chris.

Donald handled his
business against Kraken

like the number-one seed he is

and, with very little damage,
he's looking good

heading into his
semi-final match-up.

What about his opponent
tonight, Valkyrie?

She seems to be gaining
some steam, right?

KENNY:
Yeah, Leanne Cushing
came to this tournament

fresh off of a rumble win
with a 1-1 record.

She continued that momentum
as Valkyrie looked solid

in its opening-round win
against Hypothermia.

This bot is armored
with a body of titanium

and tank steel
and features a low slung,

horizontal spinning weapon.

Valkyrie has a tough
challenge against

the veteran Lock-Jaw here,
but Leanne is feeling confident.

And remember, the beauty

of tonight's
single elimination format,

anything can happen.

Let's get it cracking.

In the red square,

in his last match
he took down the Kraken.

Let's see if he can lock down
another shellacking.

It won't settle for a draw.

It's Lock-Jaw!

CHRIS:
Kenny, it looks like Lock-Jaw

has changed up
its configuration here.

KENNY:
Yeah, Chris. He's using
his lighter vertical discs,

and he's added a wedge
to the back

for some extra armor
to combat Valkyrie's weapon.

In the blue square,

in her last battle she scored


Critics gave it four scars

and said the soundtrack
was k*ller.

Prepare to take flight.

It's Valkyrie!

CHRIS:
Valkyrie and company

switching up
its weapon here, Kenny.

KENNY:
Yeah, she's going with
her heavier bar spinner

this time around
to try and counter

that added wedge armor
of Lock-Jaw.

CHRIS:
As we said earlier,
this is gonna be a w*r

that's won back in the pits.

So we sent Jessica inside
to check in on the builders.

What we did is, we have
a interchangeable design.

Basically,
the weapon is lighter.

It's gonna hit
a little bit less,

but then that allowed us to put
on a little defensive shield,

you know, as any good
gladiator would do.

A little shield, a little sword.

We also are switching out
what weapons we're using.

We have a Spirit of Boston,
which is just a bar spinner.

More of a Tombstone-y
type of look to it

to see what chunks
we can take out of him.

And get under or get at him,
try to take him out.

ROBOT:
Robots activate.

CHRIS:
Kenny, what does each squad have
to do to reach the final?

KENNY:
Well, Chris,
Lock-Jaw will want to lead

with that wedge
to blunt the force

of that heavy bar spinner
of Valkyrie.

And for Valkyrie, she needs
to get that bar spinner

up to speed as fast as possible

and try to get around
to those vulnerable flanks.

[ROBOTIC MELODY PLAYING]

CHRIS:
The winner between
Lock-Jaw and Valkyrie

will be one win
from punching its ticket

into the top 16.

[TIMER BUZZING]

Let the first semi-final begin.

Here comes Lock-Jaw,
taking a serious shot.

Right on the top, and that armor
coming in handy, Kenny.

KENNY:
Yeah, they're trying to jam up
that horizontal spinner

right from the get-go.
CHRIS: Oh!

KENNY:
Broken! He has broken the
horizontal spinner of Valkyrie.

Not a good start
for the team from Boston.

They are completely
out of control.

CHRIS:
It's weebling, it's wobbling.
Look at this thing.

And Lock-Jaw staying
on the offensive.

Donald Hutson's
not messing around.

KENNY:
Valkyrie in serious trouble
here, flopping like a fish.

Lock-Jaw wants to finish
this thing.

CHRIS:
And he rips off
another piece of that blade!

KENNY:
Lock-Jaw destroying
Valkyrie piece by piece.

CHRIS:
Oh, they'll go all the way
to the top of the Battle Box

and here comes the Pulverizer.

Take a little of that, Valkyrie.

KENNY:
What a start from Lock-Jaw,

just a man on a mission
right now is Donald Hutson.

CHRIS:
Not even a minute
into this bout--

KENNY: Oh!
CHRIS: He's in complete control

as he tries to push
Valkyrie into the screws.

KENNY:
And he's allowing Valkyrie to
destroy itself that much more,

getting it up against
the Battle Box.

CHRIS:
Unbelievable. Can Valkyrie
even move at this point?

KENNY:
Oh, it's gonna be
a knockout, Chris.

CHRIS:
Donald fighting
the perfect fight,

hanging back now.
Ten, nine, eight,

CHRIS:
Donald Hutson happy
to return to his square

after making quick work
of Valkyrie.

And the number-one seed
looking like a top-dog

in the tournament so far.
One, knockout.

[BUZZER BLARING]

CHRIS:
That'll do it.

Donald Hutson and Lock-Jaw

headed to the Desperado
Tournament final.

Donald, congratulations

You added that rear bumper

and that seemed to work out
perfect for you.

Yeah, I mean part of
my strategy is always to,

in the design, be very modular.

And adding a spinning weapon
with the jaws

and being able to switch up
to a bumper

is brand new for me,
but I'm starting to

feel pretty good about it.

It's a very well rounded robot.

My goal is to climb
right back up this ladder

and go get that Nut.
I am here to win it.

I was a little bit surprised.

Gigabyte's
a very powerful robot.

But Lucky, at the same time,
he is strategic.

He has fought these
spinners before

and he knows what to do.

So, we're just gonna give
it everything we got.

This is our chance
to get back in it.

We're gonna do it again,
twice in a row.

CHRIS:
All right, you ready?

Because we are getting
all-set

for the final
of the Desperado Tournament.

The winner between
Lucky and Lock-Jaw

punches its ticket
to the top 16.

And what a relief it would be
for one of these two teams.

KENNY:
Yeah, Lucky
and Lock-Jaw's seasons

didn't start the way
they planned,

and with a narrowing path
to the top 16,

they threw their hats
into the ring

and the first year
of this tournament,

and here they are
one win away

from becoming the first
to qualify

for the 2018 World Championship.

KENNY:
Lucky is a grizzled veteran,

been through some wars
just to get here.

Can it survive
just one more round

and get to the big date?

CHRIS:
And the one seed
of the Desperado Tournament,

Donald Hutson and Lock-Jaw,
wins over Kraken and Valkyrie.

KENNY:
Chris, Donald Hutson is heading
into this final with momentum.

Two impressive fights

from one of the best drivers
in this competition.

He just needs one more.

In the red square,

riding a hot streak
and already doubled down,

took Gigabyte,
flipped it upside down.

Let's see if this bot
can hit the jackpot

'cause it's feeling Lucky!

CHRIS:
Kenny, does Lucky have anything
left in its tool chest?

KENNY:
This is his last weapon
and his last wedge.

He is staying
with the same configuration

as the last fight,

but he can't have too many flips
left in that weapon, Chris.

This is what tournament
survival is all about.

In the blue square,

from San Diego,
Locked in and ready to go,

trying to win three in a row.

Will it strike a fatal blow?

It's Lock-Jaw!

CHRIS:
Kenny tell us about
Lock-Jaw's final modifications.

KENNY:
Well, Chris, he's switching back
to his previous configuration,

losing the wedge,
adding the arm,

and going with his heavier
vertical discs.

Now with the ability
to self-right,

he'll be all offense,
all the time.

CROWD [CHANTING]:
Lock-Jaw! Lock-Jaw!
Lock-Jaw! Lock-Jaw! Lock-Jaw!

ROBOT:
Robots activate.

CHRIS:
All right, Kenny.

What's it gonna take
to get this done?

KENNY:
Well, Chris, for Lucky,
he needs to use that wedge

to feed Lock-Jaw
into his weapon.

For Donald,
he's already lost once

to a flipper this year
in Bronco,

so he'll need
to drive cautiously

and use those lifting arms
to get under Lucky.

ROBOT:
Red team, ready?

Blue team, ready?

[CROWD ROARS]

[ROBOTIC MELODY PLAYING]

CHRIS:
Does team Lucky have
one more fantastic flip in him?

Or will the number one seed,
Donald Hutson,

be the first member
of our top 16?

[BUZZER BLARING]

CHRIS:
Let the bot final begin!

A hush comes over
the crowd, Kenny.

You could cut the tension
with a knife.

Both drivers moving around
nicely at this point.

KENNY:
Oh! Nice hit for Lock-Jaw.

CHRIS:
Donald Hutson on the attack.

Uh-oh, he's gotten Lucky
right where he wants him.

Trying to lift him up,
and couldn't quite do it.

KENNY:
He was able to get underneath,
that's a good sign for Lock-Jaw.

There he goes again.

CHRIS:
And now he's got Lucky cornered,

but some Kurtis with a K
drives its way out.

KENNY:
Doing a good job
of avoiding that lift.

And, oh!

CHRIS:
Oh, nice flip there!

KENNY:
Lucky on the attack.

Wonderful timing there.
Watch out, Donald.

CHRIS:
But of course, Donald Hutson
can drive either way.

He gets flipped over,
it's no big deal for his bot.

Trying to fire up
that spinner in the middle

and then do some damage.

KENNY:
Donald Hutson driving well.

Lock-Jaw looking fresh.

Locking horns now, Lock-Jaw
getting underneath again.

He's gotta be careful
with that wedge.

Lucky looking for another shot.

How many flips
does he have left?

CHRIS:
Is that like
how many times it takes

to bite to the center
of a Tootsie Pop?

KENNY:
Well, that's
what he wants to do.

He wants to cut into
the center of Lucky.

CHRIS:
Oh, nice!

Lucky gets thrown up
by the screws.

Good job by Donald Hutson,

but he couldn't quite
get a handle on it.

KENNY:
Lock-Jaw gave him
a free ride there.

Now trying to ram him up against
the screws again

on the other side.
CHRIS: And so far,

that flipper
has only done it once.

We heard he had maybe only one
or two good flips in him,

that Lucky.

KENNY:
Lock-Jaw is trying to lift up,

but Lucky doing a good job
of evading his advances.

Lock-Jaw's gotta
be ahead on points.

CHRIS:
More than halfway
through the final,

winner heads to the post season.

KENNY:
Uh-oh.

Left side's jammed.

KENNY:
Lucky struggling a little bit
with some driving.

[KENNY & CHRIS EXCLAIM]

KENNY:
Big hit by Lucky!

CHRIS:
I think that
was Lock-Jaw, Kenny.

Getting underneath.

Lock-Jaw backed into the corner,

but Lucky can't maneuver.

Somehow, Lock-Jaw
just avoided the Pulverizer.

KENNY:
Despite some of the problems

that Lock-Jaw has had--
CHRIS: Whoa!

Lock-Jaw gets underneath again
and slams Lucky into the wall.

Under a minute to go,
so the k*ll saws are now active.

Under a minute to impress
the judges or get a knock out

and earn a berth in the top 16.

KENNY:
Well, Chris, Lucky
in all sorts of trouble here.

It's barely showing
enough transitional movement

and Lock-Jaw is
taking full advantage.

CHRIS:
Nice work by Donald Hutson.
Oh! You're right, Kenny.

Lucky may not be doing enough.

The referees will be looking
at that transitional movement.

Is it enough?
REF: Ten.

Nine, eight, seven,
No, it's not!

Here comes the countdown.
Six.

CHRIS:
Lock-Jaw can smell the victory.

Four. Three.
Lucky's luck has run out.

Two, one.
Lock-Jaw's gonna win

by knockout!
Knockout!

CHRIS:
And be the first robot
in the top 16.

KENNY:
Donald Hutson has done it.

Wow!

The team clearly disappointed,

but a great showing for Lucky
in this Tournament.

They have nothing
to be ashamed of.

CHRIS:
Kenny, Lock-Jaw had a plan
and stuck to it perfectly.

KENNY:
Yeah, absolutely
brilliant driving there

from Donald Hutson,
and he did it against another

excellent driver from Lucky,

able to get underneath
with those forks,

attack at the proper angles.

He was patient,
he was persistent,

and really threw Lucky
around that battle box.

CHRIS:
And I think that
he knew Lucky had

only one or two
good flips in him,

KENNY:
It's a battle
of attrition out there.

And with this tournament style,

you really want to get in
and get out in your matches.

Lucky was in some wars
just to get to the finals.

He was an injured warrior
out there

and Lock-Jaw
took full advantage of it.

[CROWD CHEERING]

A lot of pressure off your back

now that you have

Uh, no.
I think if anything,

it's just raised the bar
a little higher.

I got a comfortable robot
that seems to be doing okay.

That, for me, makes me
kind of double down

and just start working
a little bit harder.

It's almost there, I can see it.
