are in for a historic night.

Hi everybody, I'm Chris Rose.

Here with one of
the most feared beards

on the entire planet, legendary
UFC star Kenny Florian.

Kenny, we're back.
Chris, I am so excited.

I've been waiting
for this for two years.

Hey, we can't wait
to break it all down

but first, you have
to hear how this works,

because the competition
has been completely flipped

upside down.
That's right, from now on,

just like any other
sports league,

there will be an entire
season of match-ups

battles and throwdowns.

We're talking 55 robots
with a chance

to fight up to four times each.

Their goal,
to build a body of work

strong enough to earn
a top-16 ranking

and qualify
for the post season,

where we'll have
a winner-take-all tournament

to crown the 2018
BattleBots champion.

This is BattleBots

Now, each night this season,

will be stacked with all
the monster match-ups

that we're dying to see,
and tonight we have

possibly the greatest
fight card ever assembled.

KENNY:
Yeah, Chris,
the matchmaking gods

have blessed us,
look at tonight's main event.

We got the two baddest robots
on the planet,

Tombstone and Minotaur,
the first time

they've ever fought at 250
pounds inside the battle box.

We don't have to wait for
a tournament to make it happen,

it happens tonight.

CHRIS:
And if that weren't enough,
we also got the runner-up

from 2016, Bombshell,
and he is facing a true legend.

Donald Hudson means
all business this year.

His bot Lockjaw
got a nasty surprise inside

for anyone who actually
gets close enough to see.

We've also got a bot
named Huge,

a rumble featuring three robots
in the box at once,

and to kick things off,
the 2015 world champion

Bite Force
is locked and loaded,

and ready to take on
the fire-breathing hammer

of Blacksmith.

It's the Jersey boy Al Kendall.

Told us his dad helped him
build his first combat robot.

He said winning
BattleBots would be like

winning the World Series.

In the blue square,
straight from the dark side.

who you're messing with.

Here to lay you out,
it's Bite Force.

[CROWD CHEERING]

CHRIS:
Paul Ventimiglia
and Bite Force,

the 2015 world champion
looking to start his run

toward a second title tonight.

For more on this
heavyweight match-up,

let's hear from
the builders themselves.

We're not too concerned
about Blacksmith's weapon,

it's not that powerful.
It's really cool looking.

But we're very worried
about the reliability

so they're hard to knock out.

So I might have to try
to get them towards the wall

and hit them
out of the arena,

see if we can damage
something inside.

Our strategy is going to be
to try to keep the spinner

away from the front
of our hammer assembly

that is slightly exposed.

We're going with
our heavy forks,

we're gonna try to keep them
away from our front.

We want to come out
of the gate with a win.

We want to do well
in the rankings,

and we don't want to start
in the hole with a negative,

with a loss,
so that's very important

to make a good impression.

ROBOT:
Robots, activate.

CHRIS:
For those of you
that need a refresher,

each battle will consist
of a single three-minute bout.

The goal is pretty simple,

to completely destroy
or disable your opponent.

If you can't do that,

the panel of judges
will declare a victor.

And it's not just their opponent
they'll have to worry about.

The box is a minefield
of hazards.

Screws, hammers controlled
by the other team,

and k*ll saws
that become active

in the final minute
of the fight.

The season-long campaign
to crown a 2018 world champion

begins now.

[CROWD CHEERING]

ROBOT:
Robots, are you ready?

ROBOT:

Ready.

AUDIENCE [CHANTING]:

CHRIS:
Let the bot battle begin!

Here comes Bite Force
on the attack.

The flame is already-- Oh, no!

Al Kindle and Blacksmith
gets thrown into the screws.

He's gotta get
outta there, Kenny!

KENNY:
Oh, Bite Force just ramming him
up against those screws,

and right now those forks
on the front of Blacksmith

is doing a good job
of not allowing

Bite Force
to get underneath him.

Oh, bit hits there
from Al Kindle.

Bite Force ripping open a piece
of that AR-500 armor.

CHRIS:
And he's got Kindle
backed up into the corner.

Oh, my gosh!
KENNY: That's gonna hurt.

CHRIS:
The first power shot
delivered by Bite Force.

getting in on the action.

throwing a lot of flame

but also eating a lot of sparks,

Blacksmith landed the shot,

but he looks like he snapped

and throws the hammer,

Has Blacksmith lost his flame?

KENNY:
Yup, that flame
is certainly gone now.

Blacksmith looking to punch

and the former champ!

KENNY:
And now Bite Force is getting

that spinning weapon
back up to speed.

Blacksmith is a survivor, man.

There you get a good look
at Paul Ventimiglia,

seeing the damage
that was being done to his bot.

CHRIS:
Yeah, Blacksmith landing
a ton of shots,

but I'm not sure how much damage
he's really inflicting.

Damage such a huge portion
of what the judges

take into consideration
in these fights.

KENNY:
Both bots looking
a little punch drunk

as we near the final stretch
of this fight.

CHRIS:
And Kenny,
the box hazards are active.

And with both of these bots'
weapons disabled,

it's the box that may
very well decide this one.

Oh, one of those k*ll saws
just got up into Blacksmith.

KENNY:
Chris, this has been
a back and forth fight so far.

Too close to call,
one of these guys

need to take advantage,
and make a statement here.

Oh, Blacksmith gets thrown
onto the screws!

He's not going to be able
to get up,

but he will not be counted out

while everyone suffered

a grisly amount of damage
in this rumble,

Duck impressed me
by being both aggressive

and pretty darn durable.

I'm just glad
I'm not the one

who has to make sense
of what happened.

CHRIS:
Now that the smoke has cleared,

let's go to Faruq
with the results.

Hey, if you're
an aspiring bot builder,

and we gotta give credit
to Hal Rucker because,

he basically let the other bots
kind of destroy themselves

and then he kind of
went in for the k*ll

at the very end,
really smart strategy.

CHRIS:
Man, this fight card
is off to a great start.

And it's the perfect time
to meet the first team

in our blockbuster main event,
coming up later tonight.

because Minotaur is going to be
very deadly,

We've got SubZero
taking on Huge.

It's got 40-inch wheels. [/i]
KENNY: Yeah, it's insane.

In an era where most bots are
compact and low to the ground,

Jonathan Schultz
has built his bot

out of ultra-high
molecular-weight polyethylene.

It's flexible, it's very tall.

He's betting that opponents are
going to have a lot of trouble

figuring out
how to attack it.

CHRIS:
Jerry Clarkin has
got a bot called SubZero.

He's been doing this
for a few decades,

and he's bringing his
flipper bot to the party.

KENNY:
Yeah, SubZero is what we call
a pneumatic flipper.

It uses compressed gas
to trigger its lifting weapon.

And it's looking to launch
opponents into the air.

Jerry says he has a plan
to get underneath Huge.

He actually attached forks
onto his flipper

to try to get
some more elevation.

I don't know
if it's going to work,

but I want to find out.

Let's go inside

SubZero goes on the attack!

for that defensive bumper.

Huge gets shot to the head
of SubZero.

And one from the pulverizer

That spinner in
the middle of Huge

is doing some damage, Kenny.

KENNY:
Yeah, it certainly is!

FIGHTER 1: Hit him, man.
FIGHTER 2: Hit him again!

CHRIS:
Oh, big hit there by Huge!

That weapon is devastating.
The arm's gone, dude.

[KENNY & CHRIS EXCLAIM]

SubZero's driving tactics here.

I mean, he's just happy

to drift right
into that big blade.

Oh, there it is again!

KENNY:
SubZero just has not found a way
to get underneath Huge.

Chris, that lifter seems to be--
CHRIS: c*ck!

KENNY:
Yeah, it's not
connected right now!

Nice hit by SubZero,
into the screws.

CHRIS:
Uh-oh, both bots
are up on the screws now.

KENNY:
Huge really isn't
moving very well,

not as mobile as it was when
it started, that's for sure.

Get him, Logan.

CHRIS:
SubZero making
a little push here,

doing anything he can
to get back in this fight.

KENNY:
Huge catching major air
off of SubZero's back,

but he sticks the landing.

Now, SubZero hasn't really
used its main weapon, in part,

because it's nose
looks kind of like yours

after a UFC fight, Kenny.

KENNY:
It's barely
hanging on right now.

And how that thing flips--
CHRIS: Ow, ow, ow, ow!

CHRIS:
SubZero's taking a licking.

KENNY:
He's pretty rocked.

He doesn't know where he is
in the battle box.

He doesn't know up, down,
left, right, and uh--

Uh-oh, he's coming
right for him!

Jerry Clarkin and SubZero's
looking us right in the eye.

What do you got, customer?

Uh-oh, look out!
Huge is-- Oh, no!

Just chopped off SubZero's tail.

So now less than 20 seconds
to go in this one.

It's right in front of us.

He's got those evil eyes
that are looking at us.

KENNY:
Yeah, they're kind of
crooked right now.

But Huge has turned SubZero
into tin foil.

CHRIS:
Less than 10 to go.

There will be
no knockout today,

but Huge coming up big time
against SubZero.

KENNY: Wow.
[ALARM BLARING]

Huge, one of the wackiest
designs we've seen in years,

putting on an impressive show,

in its first ever
BattleBots fight.

KENNY:
Chris we had
some great action early.

Huge hits there,
no pun intended,

as he was able to get
on top of SubZero.

CHRIS:
Kenny, the main problem was

SubZero just couldn't use
that flipper.

Yes, he utilized the battle box
to his advantage,

but man, just couldn't get him
up in the air

more than one or two times.

Huge with a couple of special
deliveries for SubZero,

who comes out
of the corner, Faruq!

The results
from the judges are in.

CHRIS:
Kenny, any questions about Huge,

definitely answered right there.

Yeah, we have our answer,
size matters, okay.

We knew it was going to be
tough defensively,

just based on the size
of the wheels

but that bar spinner really did
a lot of damage as well.

So offense and defense for Huge.

CHRIS:
All right, coming up next,
our fight card rolls on

with Bombshell verses
Lock-Jaw, but first,

let's hear from
the reigning champion.

Looking to make a statement
in tonight's main event,

it's the one and only,
Tombstone.

We got a good one coming up.

It's Bombshell versus Lock-Jaw.

CHRIS:
Kenny, I think Bombshell
surprised the world in 2016

with a run all the way
to the final.

In fact, Mike Jeffries said

he kind of surprised
himself as well.

Now is he feeling
a little bit of pressure

because he's one of
the big dogs here?

KENNY:
He's definitely got
a target on his back.

But Mike Jeffries is a guy

obsessed with refining
the tech on his bot.

He's gone with a lightweight

vertical spinner
for this fight.

He can get that
up to speed very quickly.

And that's critical
when facing a driver

as talented as Donald Hudson.

CHRIS:
No surprises with
Donald Hudson and Lock-Jaw,

except there is
a big surprise waiting,

even though it looks
like the same old bot.

KENNY:
Chris, true to form,

Donald continues
to push the envelope.

This version features
two independent lifting forks,

and right in between those

where there used to be
a grappler,

he's added
two vertical disk spinners.

So he'll be looking
to get underneath Bombshell,

potentially flip him
over completely.

It's going to be
a disk-on-disk battle.

here to get down and dirty,

from the ATL, it's Bombshell!

CHRIS:
Mike Jeffries and Bombshell.

His bot's name,
an ode to his work

with b*mb disposal technology
for the government.

this bot's never met
a jawbreaker it couldn't bite.

between me and Bombshell

is just going to be

so whoever loses control

Let the bot battle begin!

Lock-Jaw spinning
that disk spinner

up to high speed--
And oh,

taking a shot at Bombshell,

which is on its head already.

KENNY:
That was a perfect hit there
from Donald Hudson,

who now is making mincemeat
of Bombshell.

Bombshell tipped.

CHRIS:
What's Bombshell going to do?

Can it self-right?
Can it do anything?

Donald Hudson pushing it
into the screws.

Perhaps a sign
of good sportsmanship,

trying to continue this fight.

Flip us, keep going.

MAN:
You gotta show me
some kind of movement.

I'm going to have to count you
down, you don't show movement.

CHRIS:
Bombshell has got to do
some sort of movement.

MAN: Nine. Eight.
It's already being counted out.

What's Donald
going to do, Kenny?

Does he risk flipping him over?

Or does he take
the quick knockout?

Oh, wait, there's a little
movement, we have movement!

Actually, Donald Hudson
has saved Bombshell

with two seconds left
on the count.

Lock-Jaw has done
the unthinkable

to keep this match alive.
And oh!

Bombshell launching himself
over Lock-Jaw.

We are back in business!

KENNY:
This is exactly
what Donald Hudson wanted.

He wanted to get that angle,
and get Bombshell on its side.

Bombshell, not operating
the way he wants here.

Just flipped upside down.

CHRIS:
The fight is still going.

Bombshell, the very last
second had a chance,

but now he's in the corner,
can he right himself?

Can't be too comfortable
fighting upside down.

KENNY:
Yeah, this is
not what he planned for.

CHRIS:
Lock-Jaw with a taste of blood,

he's stalking Bombshell,
lining him up-- Oh!

Could that be the knockout blow?

Bombshell lifeless
in front of Mike Jeffries.

You gotta show me
you got some movement.

You gotta try to move.

CHRIS:
Donald Hudson and Lock-Jaw

stamping his authority on this
competition early on, Kenny.

The old guard is back,
and he's sending a message

to every bot that he is bigger,
he is badder,

and better than ever.

KENNY:
Donald Hudson and Lock-Jaw

showed some compassion
before, Chris,

but I think Bombshell
is all out of favors here.

Two, one, knockout!

[HORN BLARES]
CHRIS: That is it.

Bombshell avoiding
an earlier knockout,

flipping over
at the last second,

but now Lock-Jaw gets it done!

KENNY:
Very, very impressive.

That is a robot that can go
all the way, Chris.

Yo, what a start. I mean,
one and done pretty much.

You knocked him back up
and kept going again?

I kinda went kinda quick
and I thought you know,

he's got a lot more in him,
so it was a fun match.

You know,
we put on a good fight,

and I'm just happy
to have made it.

The robot is a brand-new robot.

Hopefully, the next competitor
is, um, ready for us.

First fight,
always a nervous one.

Are you feeling a little bit
more confident now,

now that you know
how quickly your bot

can take somebody out?

You know what,
it actually did go a lot faster

than I thought it would.

I thought it was going to be
more of a knockdown drag out.

when he was a kid.

that can eat fire, no problem.

to see his bot fight.

Well, this guy has a bot

that's 85 percent
recycled parts.

He really has a beautiful
bot, really cool.

Devil Egg that has
a 70-pound drum spinner,

so that could do
some serious damage.

And then there's Kraken.

Matt Spurk,
you better watch out for him.

KENNY:
Yeah, absolutely, he believes

that he is going to have
the most powerful

and fastest crusher
in BattleBots[/i] history.

We don't have a rooting
interest in this thing.

No.
However, we are big
fins of Sharkoprion.

Let's get inside the box.

if this bot was a holiday,

it would be fangsgiving.

Here with the side
of candied slams,

get ready for a big helping
of pumpkin die!

It's Kraken!

here to enjoy the festivities.

In the blue square,
when it goes in for the k*ll,

it will rip through at will.

[HUMS "JAWS" THEME]

It's Sharkoprion!

[CROWD CHEERING]

Yeah!

In the green square,
omelet you finish,

but this robot
will leave you shell-shocked,

and that's no yolk,
it's Deviled Egg.

CHRIS:
Kenny, the BattleBots
investigative team

just found out something
very interesting about Kraken

and Matt Spurk.
KENNY: That's right.

We know Matt Spurk really
wants to win this rumble.

How do we know,
because he made an alliance

with Ed Robinson of Sharkoprion,

but he also made an alliance,
with Zak Hassanein

from team Deviled Egg as well.

He's a double agent?
He's a double agent.

[CROWD CHEERING]

ROBOT:
Robots activate.

[♪♪♪]

ROBOT: Red team, ready? [/i]
Hit that button.

Blue team, ready? [/i]
Hit it.

[CROWD CHEERING]

CHRIS:
Only one will survive.

[BUZZING]

Let the bot rumble begin!

[KENNY & CHRIS EXCLAIM]

Sharkoprion using that tail.

KENNY:
Offensively, Eddy ramped
right into Kraken.

Deviled Egg trying to get in
on the action as well.

CHRIS:
So far, the primary weapon
is not doing much damage.

But really,
Sharkoprion the most aggressive

of the three bots.

KENNY: Yeah, no doubt about it.
CHRIS: Oh!

Gets pinned in with that saw.
Kraken got a nice hold.

Really trying to attack
the tires of Sharkoprion.

CHRIS:
Now he can drag Sharkoprion
around for 20 seconds

then he has to let him loose.

And now Deviled Egg trying
to get in on the action as well

with that massive drum spinner.

KENNY:
You can actually see the teeth
of Kraken already bent there.

CHRIS:
Oh, and a big piece has
fallen off one of those bots.

With three of them in there,
it's hard to tell who.

Look at Kraken's wheels, though!

Kraken's wheels--
We're gonna need a spare

on the back left side.

KENNY:
Deviled Egg just kind of
floating around out there.

What a huge hit
from Sharkoprion.

CHRIS:
Deviled Egg has been
flipped over on its head,

and I guess it's scrambled.

Now Sharkoprion
caught in the teeth of Kraken.

Is it a two-bot race now?

KENNY:
Kraken needs a dentist.

Look at the teeth.
It's right in the battle box.

He lost that huge fang.

Sharkoprion doing some
serious damage out there.

CHRIS:
And Deviled Egg
in the meantime,

over cooked, well done
and out of this thing.

So it's down to two.

Kraken's gotta let go
of Sharkoprion.

And he finally does.

KENNY:
He's gonna need some
dental work, look at that.

You gotta show me
some movement,

You gotta show me
some kind of movement.

[CROWD CHEERING]

CHRIS:
Doesn't even have its
primary weapon to use.

KENNY:
Yes it is, and I think

he's the only bot
that's moving right now.

He's gonna count him down!

REF:

KENNY: Sharkoprion wins!

CHRIS:
That is a double K.O.

I make the joke frequently
it's kind of like

a dysfunctional family reunion.

We get together
once or twice a year,

and we break each other's toys.

I'm just better at it
than most of them.

It'll look even cooler
carrying the giant nut

back out of the arena, right?

There's sort of this
love-hate relationship

between me
and the other builders.

[LAUGHS]

I know everybody in the pits
has made plans

specifically for me,

and the only thing
I can tell everybody,

is you're gonna lose
fighting me,

that's just the reality of it.

We are ready
for the main event.

It is the fight we have
been waiting for all night.

Minotaur taking on
the 2016 winner

of the giant nut, Tombstone.

And Kenny,
Ray Billings told us,

hey listen, I don't have
much to worry about.

I'm at the top of the mountain,
they got to come get me.

KENNY:
Yeah absolutely. Listen,

this guy wants to win
and he wants to win very badly.

Billings going in
with a shorter blade,

one that's a little bit
more low to the ground,

to try and combat
that very dangerous

drum spinner
of Minotaur.

CHRIS:
What do you expect
out of the Brazilian team?

KENNY:
Well, obviously,
we talked about

the surgical precision
of Daniel Freitas

and his amazing driving.

I expect him to try
to go around,

attack those tires
of Tombstone,

maybe attack
from the back as well.

Can we stop talking
and get to some fighting?

Let's do it.

[CROWD CHEERING]

Ladies and gentlemen,
are you ready?

Time for tonight's main event.

CHRIS:
Kenny, en route
to winning the title in 2016,

Ray Billings and Tombstone
fought six matches,

won by knockout in five of them.

KENNY:
It's good to be the champ,

to see and feel
and hear the crowd.

They're going nuts
for Tombstone right now.

[♪♪♪]

[CROWD CHEERING]

CHRIS:
Oh, the team from Brazil!

Minotaur led by
Marco Meggiolaro.

They love the enthusiasm
in this place.

KENNY:
Absolutely, and how about
the destructiveness of Minotaur.

That is one nasty, nasty bot.

[CROWD CHEERING]

In the red square, please
rise for the reigning king.

The prince of pain,
the duke of death.

Hear ye, hear ye,
his royal die-ness.

The one, the only, Tombstone!

[CROWD CHEERING]

Hi. Yeah, yeah, whoo!

We're gonna get them.

In the blue square,

♪ Olé, olé, olé, olé, olé! ♪

When this bot sees red,
you're, well, dead!

It's fast, it's mean,
it'll bust your spleen,

it's Minotaur!

CHRIS:
Kenny, these two have been
fighting one another since 2006

but never in the heavyweight
division at 250 pounds.

KENNY:
That's right,
these are two bots

with a tremendous amount
of kinetic energy.

Two big knockout punchers.

This is like taking Mike Tyson
and George Foreman,

and having them fight.

ROBOT:
Robots activate.

[CROWD CHEERING]

[♪♪♪]

Red team, ready?

Blue team, ready?

[CROWD CHEERING]

[♪♪♪]

I love this sport.

CROWD [CHANTING]:
Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight!

[BUZZING]

CHRIS:
Let the main bot event begin!

Oh, those weapons are fired up
to full speed already!

Oh, we got a collision already!

Minotaur taking a couple
of knocks to the front side.

He's flipped over,
but look at him self-right.

Whoa!
What a hit!

Holy smokes!

CHRIS:
It sent Tombstone
across the battle box,

and he took a chunk
of the floor with him.

Sorry about your floor.

KENNY:
How many bots on Earth

can withstand
this much punishment?

CHRIS:
Oh, Minotaur gets shot
three feet in the air.

Come on!
Here we go.

They're squaring up.
Minotaur with a huge hit.

KENNY:
Every time
these bots collide!

[KENNY & CHRIS EXCLAIM]

CHRIS:
We got serious sparks
inside the battle box.

KENNY:
There's been some
tremendous hits here, Chris,

it's gonna be
all about durability.

Wow!

CHRIS:
Tombstone just delivering
shot after shot!

Is Minotaur's drum spinner
even working, Kenny?

That thing looks
down for the count.

KENNY:
It is not working
and that is a huge disadvantage!

CHRIS:
Oh, big-time spin,
but Minotaur keeps on kicking.

With no weapon,
he's got to hurl himself

to Tombstone front-on. Oh!

KENNY:
These hits are just devastating.

This is crazy!
Minotaur sacrificing himself

to use Tombstone's kinetic
energy to destroy itself.

CHRIS:
Uh-oh, Minotaur
nearly gets hung up

on a piece of broken floor.

Tombstone's plate is now
dragging on the ground.

It's been angled down
for a little bit, whoa!

We got shrapnel
hitting the battle box.

We didn't catch
the battle box did we?

KENNY:
Chris, are we
sure this battle box--

Oh, my goodness.

CHRIS:
Look at this.

The drum spinner
for Minotaur is dead!

KENNY:
Tombstone, taking a bite

out of the box right now,
he's still hungry.

It's over by us.
Chris, get in front of me.

CHRIS:
No, Kenny, you're the former
fighter, get out there.

Wow! Look at that!

Minotaur is not moving, oh my.

He's hung up
on a piece of the floor

that Tombstone tore up.

[LAUGHING]

KENNY:
I think that's going to be it
for Minotaur.

CHRIS: This could be it.
Wow!

I need to see you move.

CHRIS:
Under a minute to go.

Minotaur,
no transitional movement,

no primary weapon function.

And 10, nine, eight,
seven, six...

CHRIS:
His wheels
can't tough the floor.

This is the end, Kenny. Wow!

[WHOOPS]
Three, two, one, knockout!

[SIREN BLARES]

[CROWD CHEERING]

KENNY:
That was a classic!

CHRIS:
You need only one word
to sum up this fight, violence.

These two heavy hitters
tore up the battle box,

taking chunk after chunk
out of the floor.

Then Minotaur lost
his primary weapon

after a deluge
of Tombstone hits.

KENNY:
At that point,

Minotaur's only option
was to hurl itself

into Tombstone
and try to break Ray's weapon.

But check this out,
Minotaur actually

gets hung up on a piece
of that jagged floor

that Ray ripped up
earlier in the fight.

It was high centered,
and that was all she wrote.

[CROWD CHEERING]
INTERVIEWER: Ray, well done.

What a debut.

For a while there,
I was nervous.

You guys were pretty
perfectly matched.

Yeah, pair of really tough
robots, really tough robots.

[LAUGHING]
And it was a great match!

It was a fantastic match.

Do you guys-- Has Tombstone ever
taken hits like that before?

Well, we've had some
rough matches before,

but that's gotta be
the hardest hits it's ever seen,

That's right there
at that 10 level, sure.

So how does this set you up
for the rest of the season?

You know,
I just had to come in

and remind everybody
who the champ was,

and I think that's what we did.
