Dakar: Race Against the Desert (2025)

The Dakar started in 1977

as a rally race from Paris

to Senegal in Africa.

It's moved

all around the world since,

but it's been in Saudi Arabia

for the last few years.

The rally consists

of multiple time stages,

and at the end, we add it all up

and the person with the best

time wins the whole race.

So, of course, you can win

the stage and that's awesome,

but it doesn't mean much

outside of the whole.

Uh, we have multiple separate

categories of vehicles.

They race each other

but don't mix.

Cars versus cars.

Trucks versus trucks.

Buggies versus buggies.

Just at the last possible...

We don't mix categories.

I personally race

in the motorcycle category.

Price, the Dakar leader...

To be the first Australian

to win the Dakar, it's insane.

Toby Price,

taking over at the top,

winning his second Dakar title.

We do it the old-fashioned

way using a roadbook.

There is a very real chance

of getting lost

in the middle of the desert,

or worse.

Toby Price in the lead again,

on Dakar 2020.

It's with a heavy heart that

we begin with the tragic news

that Paulo Gonalves has died

after crashing

in today's seventh stage.

Price stopped to help

when he came across the scene.

The entire Dakar family

would like to extend

its sincerest condolences

to all of Paulo's family

and friends.

It's known

as the most dangerous race

in the world, really, cos we...

we cover so many kilometers

over so many days, and...

we never get to see the track.

Every day, we go into a track

completely blind and...

we're expected to go speeds

of up to 170, 80 kilometers

an hour.

Unfortunately, we normally have

one casualty

and one fatality each year.

It's... yeah, it's quite tough

on the riders and drivers.

Last time I won it,

I did it with a broken wrist.

I've paid the price for that.

I have quite a lot of scars

on the body.

Let's have you

move this thumb now.

My broken bone tally

is up to 30.

Injuries definitely

take their toll.

It's a little tight, but...

Sainz was over the moon.

Throughout the day,

Sainz changed gear 2,066 times.

with Sainz eventually winning

his first Dakar.

This is

my 17th time racing at Dakar.

It always changes.

Why am I still doing this?

My kids are grown up.

My son is a professional driver

himself, but he races F1.

He hasn't raced Dakar yet.

more extreme than this.

But I do have a new challenge.

This year, we'll race

an all-electric car.

Every other team in T1

is still petrol power.

Stphane Peterhansel

has been doing this

even longer than I have.

We've been on many

different teams as rivals,

but Audi wanted

the most experienced drivers

to race their electric cars.

So now we are teammates.

An old driver

in the newest machine.

This is a big test.

But we're not off

to a good start.

It's only

my second time at Dakar.

I'm going up against

the legends of the sport.

This is what it's all about.

I haven't won

a single stage, I'm doing OK.

My times are good.

I'm number four.

For me,

it's all about consistency.
