[Ted] My name is Ted Scott.

I'm a PGA TOUR caddie.
This is my 25th year.

The caddie-player relationship
is really important.

Caddies have one of the
hardest jobs in golf.

[Rapaport] They're not hitting
shots, but they're directly tied

to the golfer's performance.

That rough, just it's gonna
be very hard to judge.

[Rapaport] If the golfer plays
like sh*t, they get paid like sh*t.

You told me on Tuesday you were gonna
make a million dollars this four weeks.

Well, we gotta get after it.

Sometimes, you're a psychologist.
Sometimes, you gotta build them up.

The right caddie can
break you or make you.

[commentator] One of
the all-time seasons.

[commentator 2] Number
one in the world.

No one would disagree

that this year has been the season
of Scottie Scheffler and Ted Scott.

Hey, Teddy!

[Ted] He's not really
thinking about legacy.

It's more like, "If I'm
playing the tournament,

I wanna destroy you."
And that's what he loves.

[Dethier] What Scottie and Ted have
been able to accomplish is historic.

Every other player-caddie combo

is hoping somehow to
replicate that success.

My name is Carl Smith. I
caddie for Sahith Theegala.

I've been caddying
ten years now.

And I've experienced
the highest of highs.

[commentator] Sahith Theegala
is a winner on the PGA TOUR.

And the lowest of lows.

- [woman] I'm sorry.
- It's okay. It's okay.

[Carl] I think the last few
years have been preparing himself

to elevate his status in
the game even further.

I really believe he
can get to number one.

[Rapaport] The question is, does
this team have what it takes

to make this a breakout year?

[dramatic music playing]

[gentle music playing]

[Scottie] Don't film me eating
the Doritos. My wife will be mad.

[man] How would you describe
your guys' relationship?

Me and Teddy's? Difficult.

[Ted] Bromance.

[Scottie chuckles] Bromance.

[Ted chuckles]

- [Scottie] Sure. Sure.
- [Ted] Sure.

[Wilson] In the whole sport,

you're not gonna find a
more solid relationship

than Scottie Scheffler
and Ted Scott.

[Scottie] What do you
think, Teddy? Seven iron.

My guess is a seven.

[Wilson] And people
may not realize

just how important that relationship
has been to Scottie's success.

[crowd] Oh!

[Wilson] Four years ago, Scottie
Scheffler wasn't the super Scottie

that we see him as today.

[crowd] Oh!

[Wilson] He really
struggled with his putting.

And he actually showed a lot
of emotion on the course.

I'm so tired of this, man.

It's such an easy putt.
It's such an easy putt.

I don't feel like I hit a bad putt.
I can't even hit the freakin' hole.

[Scottie] My mechanics
were a bit off, and so it…

At times, I think I was just ingraining
the wrong stuff into my putting.

I used to fight anger issues.
I used to get too frustrated.

Golf was too important to me.

That's where I placed my
identity for a long time.

- [commentator] Don't bend that putter.
- [commentator 2] That was extraordinary.

[Scottie] I try not to change much,
but I needed to change something.

[commentator] Ted Scott here
with his man Bubba Watson.

[Zuël] Ted Scott is
an incredible caddie.

He has had a wonderful, storied
career with many big names,

including 15 years
with Bubba Watson.

They had two Masters Green
Jackets, multiple PGA TOUR wins.

In November of 2021, I
split with Bubba Watson.

I think Bubba and I had
spent so much time together,

we really weren't
growing together anymore.

And so I was like, "I just wanna
move on and do something else."

And basically, a friend of
mine approached me and said,

"You're about to receive a phone
call from a really good player."

"This guy's really
good, like really good."

I had never really met Scottie

other than the fact that we played
with him in the New Orleans tournament.

And I saw that he was
kind of feisty, you know?

And so that was one of the questions I
actually asked him when he called me.

I said, "I don't know if I wanna work
for you, 'cause of your attitude."

I posed that question to him.

He said, "That's
a fair question."

"And that's something
I'm willing to work on."

All I need is a little hope,
and I'll get behind anybody.

So I decided to take the job,
and here we are. [chuckles]

[Ted] Man, I'm like…

What's a good analogy for something
that's really broken down?

- That's what I'm like.
- [Scottie] A caddie?

[Ted chuckles] A caddie.

I'm like a caddie that's been
working for 25 years on this tour.

Oh, I have. That's why I'm
broken down. [chuckles]

What most of the public
thinks about caddies

is they just show up in a parking
lot, they grab a heavy bag,

and they go carry it
around and get some snacks

and maybe tell a funny
joke every now and then.

But there's a lot more
to what they provide.

[Dethier] A lot of
caddies on the PGA TOUR

were serious competitive players
themselves, or they were coaches.

And so they bring a level of expertise
to planning out course strategy

or reading greens
or picking clubs.

[Ted] You might have a
player that's very technical,

and he wants somebody to
be looking at his swing.

You might have someone very
emotional. Some wanna know the course.

So you're always just trying to
figure out what gaps to fill.

[Dethier] Ted Scott had
some experience to draw on,

but maybe the most
important thing

that he brought to his
relationship with Scottie

was an attitude check.

[Ted] I'll take credit
for planting the seed,

but that was really a cool thing that
Scottie was willing to work on that.

And that was exciting for me.

I was like, "Man,
this could be fun."

[commentator] Scottie Scheffler
is the king of Bay Hill again.

[applause]

[commentator] Yes, Scottie Scheffler
is the 50th Players champion.

Into the night with
an amazing par.

Scottie Scheffler has won six
times on the PGA TOUR this year,

including his second Green
Jacket, his five other top fives.

And just for good measure,
he won Olympic gold.

Scottie. [chuckles]

Like, he's doing everything
better than everybody.

The thing that Scottie's done for
some of these guys, it's like,

yeah, you could play
good every week.

It's like there's only one other
guy who's played good every week

in… you know what I mean?

[commentator] I
don't believe it.

[Rapaport] It's all of a sudden
having an impact on other players

that we really haven't
seen since Tiger Woods.

[cheering]

[Ted] Go back to Tiger, 2000.

We all like the idea
of, like, a superhero.

And so Scottie's having
that kind of run this year.

And you see it in the
kids and the people

that want selfies and
pictures and things like that.

The star is growing
at a scary rate.

[commentator] Pure domination.

[Ted] I don't think it
ever really felt real.

As far as being the face of the sport,
I… I don't really think much about it.

[Scottie laughs]

- [Ted] Who's that?

[Scottie] I love competition, I love
playing, and I also love going home.

You know, I love my son more
than anything in the world.

I don't even really remember what life
was like before. It's kind of wild.

He's doing great.

I can sit there and stare, watch
him stretch, laugh at him all day.

I think a lot of people could have a baby,
and it'd actually slow down their season.

But, uh, he's very
well-equipped at that.

He handles that stuff
really well, surprisingly.

[Rapaport] This week's TOUR Championship
is an opportunity for Scottie

to put a bow on his
incredible year.

But this tournament, in particular,
has eluded him in years past.

[Zuël] For the last two years, he's
come in as the world number one

and has been usurped by Rory
McIlroy and Viktor Hovland.

We have this situation with Scottie
where perhaps this is his white whale.

[Scottie] Gosh dang it, Teddy.
That was supposed to go in.

[suspenseful music playing]

[cheering]

Uh, you need anything, boss?

All good, Ross. Thank you. I
kind of want to hit another one.

Sahith Theegala has been a fan favorite
since his rookie year on the PGA TOUR.

And this season, he's playing
the best golf of his career.

[cheering and applause]

[man] He's really good.

He's had seven top tens,

two solo seconds in
signature events.

And it felt more
consistent this year.

Sahith Theegala, the field
is f*cking terrified.

The question now is, does
he have the right stuff

to break through and
take on that top spot?

So this is a book from the Theegalas
after Sahith's first win at Napa.

Fun to see me smiling for
once. That's a rarity.

First met Sahith when he
was entering high school.

[Sahith] Carl was the
assistant coach in Pepperdine.

And I felt like he was there

at every event that I
played as a junior golfer.

[Carl] I was recruiting.
And I saw him play.

And I was like, "This kid
knows how to play golf."

[Sahith] He probably believed in me
more than I did in myself back then.

I knew that was somebody that
I wanted as one of my coaches.

Unfortunately, that never happened. He
never got to coach me at Pepperdine.

I left to start caddying
before he got to school.

- Don't be afraid to get it back there.
- Yeah.

[reporter] The Pepperdine
men's golf team

are the 2017 Southwestern
Invitational champions.

Leading the waves in the
invitational with Sahith Theegala.

[Carl] And I got a call from
the Pepperdine head coach.

And he was like, "Sahith
wants you to caddie for him."

What I saw in him
at 13, 14 years old,

I honestly think he can be
number one in the world.

[woman] She's ready for her close-up.
[chuckles]

- [man] Ivy, you're gonna be on TV.
- [woman chuckles]

[man] Isn't that crazy?
You're gonna be on TV, Ivy.

[chuckles]

She was made for TV. Look how…
look how pretty she is. [chuckles]

[Sahith] This year was awesome because
I had a really nice regular season.

It's nice to feel I'm in the middle
of the pack and try and contend.

[Juju] This picture frame
just came in the mail.

And the first thing,
Sahith opens it.

He goes, "I got Justin
Thomas's signature."

[all laugh]

It's funny. Playing with
Jason Day and Padraig…

- Yeah.
- We grew up watching these guys.

And now I'm playing against them.
It felt kind of, like, awkward.

Like, what am I gonna talk
about with these guys?

[Rapaport] It's entirely possible
to have a really nice career

in the middle of the pack.

But is that what Sahith wants? I
think Sahith wants to be the best.

[Zuël] When we look at a
player's PGA TOUR career,

year three seems to be
when the magic happens.

[commentator] Ted Scott
and Scottie Scheffler.

[Dethier] If you look at Scottie
Scheffler's third season,

that's when he won four
times, including the Masters.

Now we're getting to the end
of Sahith's third season.

And if he really wants to
make this a breakout year,

he needs a win.

[Sahith] It's like, "Okay, yes,
I'm very happy to be here."

But there's still a lot of,
like, bad golf in there.

It's like, "Oh, it's okay.
You've made it here."

I'm like, "No, it's not okay."

[Carl] Good tournament
or bad tournament,

you always say, "I can
get so much better."

- [Sahith] Yeah.
- [Carl] That makes you a little different.

Sahith has not been playing
great golf recently.

He was tied for 46th at the
FedEx St. Jude Championship.

[commentator 2]
Back-to-back misses.

[Rapaport] He was dead last
at the BMW Championship.

And he's running out
of chances to win.

[commentator] It has been a
rough week for Sahith Theegala.

[Sahith] Yeah, um… I…
I didn't play too well,

but definitely gives me some
extra fuel to the fire this week

going into the
TOUR Championship.

This is six, the par five. The
second shot's like way uphill.

They took one of the
bunkers out there.

If we're playing a week,

every year we come here,
the course is the same.

I don't have a ton
of homework to do.

If we go to a Major, a place we haven't
played in five years or ten years

or we've never been to, I'm gonna
see it as many times as I can.

My job is to know
the golf course.

Um, you said they made
some changes to the course?

Yeah, comparing it to my
yardage book from two years ago,

it's like they've
changed every hole.

I'm like, "I'm not even
sure what hole this is."

It is always kind of nice knowing
no one's gonna have an advantage

of, like, "I've made the TOUR
Championship the last however many years."

It's drastically different.

I got my book for the week.

Always got my range finder.

Got my sunscreen. Need that.

The TOUR Championship is one of the
most important tournaments of the year

because the opportunity
here is massive.

[woman] Like


Yeah.

[commentator] The season-long race
comes down to this week and this place.

The East Lake Golf
Club, a familiar place

that now brings a
whole new challenge.

We're thrilled to be back in Atlanta
to crown our FedEx Cup champion.

I am excited for the world to
see this course restoration.

Man, they really just opened up
that right side, haven't they?

[commentator] Even though the
greens are in similar spots,

it's not remotely close to what
they're used to playing at East Lake.

I think this is my fifth year here.
It's literally not the same golf course.

[commentator] Number one coming
in. He's held that position

throughout much of
the FedEx Cup season.

[commentator 2] The
advantage Scheffler will have

is he and Ted Scott, his caddie,
know how to pick apart a golf course.

And I think that's
gonna be a big benefit.

[commentator 3] The 30 best in 2024
on the PGA TOUR, they are here.

Everybody vying to put their
name on the FedEx Cup trophy.

Looks like someone
already had one.

[woman] So who are
you staying with?

Um, with Ted Scott and John
Limanti and Brandon Parsons.

I think John's still
asleep. Teddy was out early.

So luxurious.

We just live out of a suitcase.

I don't think I've ever unpacked
it once on the road, ever.

[Joel] I love the caddies.

I love hanging out with them. They
have a great perspective on life.

They're putting in the
time and effort, traveling.

They're staying in hotels. They're
staying in houses together.

Let's see if they have, like,
to-go cups or something.

[Joel] It's not easy when your paycheck
rides on someone else hitting a golf ball.

They go through the same
emotions that we go through.

[Carl] Nope, out of luck.

Being on the road, it is lonely.

I've missed a lot of things.

I've missed a lot of birthdays,
a lot of friends' weddings.

You need a nice support
system around you

'cause if not, I think
you just go mental.

Okay, let's see if I can do
this without burning my mouth.

Mm.

No, still a little hot.

[Sahith] I haven't had a great couple
weeks, but I think Carl does a good job

of kind of keeping me focused.

I feel like I'm kind of due
for a good week, in a way.

[Carl] I think Sahith's best asset
is the ability to move on from stuff.

But Sahith specifically does
not like a rah-rah cheerleader.

Like, that doesn't fire him up.

I know when he plays bad, it
fires him up, that's for sure.

[indistinct chatter]

- You're the best roommate ever.

- [Ted] Yeah.

- Are you sure?
- Yeah, dude.

- I've only seen you there one time.
- You've seen me. I just let you in.

I think that's about
as far as we got.

I do this every week, even if
I've been to the course ten times.

You and your yardage book, for
me, there's nothing better.

Some just assume we show
up, and our guys are so good

that we just tell them where to hit
it, or they know where to hit it,

but there's prep work on
where to go, where not to go.

[Carl] So I made a note,

drawing in the basic
undulation of the green.

Put a red X just because
if you went long there,

you would have no chance
to that back left pin.

I'm gonna check out
these bunkers too.

[woman] Do you caddies kind
of stick together, then?

I would say, for
the most part, yeah.

But at the end of the day,
everyone wants to win.

[upbeat music playing]

[Rapaport] The top 30 players
in the FedEx Cup standings

qualify for the
TOUR Championship.

And first place comes with
a 25-million-dollar payday.

Now, the TOUR Championship
has a special set of rules.

The number one player starts at the
top of the leaderboard at 10 under par.

The number two player
starts at 8 under.

And the stroke advantage
decreases from there.

To no surprise, the person sitting
at the top of the leaderboard

is Scottie Scheffler.

I'm gonna come to Dallas
National with my new move.

Right here, get low, I
guess, and then rotate.

No, but us…

I can beat you at Dallas.

I got four months to get my
seven-stroke handicap down.

[Scottie] You're supposed to dream
at night, not during the day.

My seven-stroke handicap.

[Sahith] Scottie is on one of the
most historic runs ever in golf.

The beauty of the game is it feels like
if you have a great day and he doesn't,

you still feel like you
could beat him that day.

But the problem is, he doesn't
have very many bad days.

Your guy is so good, and he
kinda hasn't played as good.

He should play good… He's
like better than everybody.

I think…

I think he's figuring it out a little
bit as far as the pacing himself.

Yeah.

Yeah. Um…

'Cause we've had a couple little
nagging things here and there.

So I think he's figuring it out.

[Sahith] It's funny. The
relationship between me and Carl,

now that I'm on the PGA TOUR,
has really not changed too much.

I'm very lucky and thankful
for our friendship.

And I know that's not the
most common thing out on tour

because it's cutthroat.

When it comes down
to it, a job's a job.

And you know, you can be
best friends with somebody,

but if you feel like they're not doing
the job to the best of their ability

and it's costing you, then you've
got to get rid of that person

and get a new guy.

But Carl's one of the
hardest workers I know.

And he doesn't take his job for granted.
Doesn't take our friendship for granted.

And I don't either. Or I
don't try to, at least.

There have been times where, maybe
when things aren't going as well,

I get a little too loose out
there and just start joking.

But, honestly,
for the most part,

there's not really any disadvantage
of… of being too close.

[man] Look at Teddy. He
looks like an old man,

wrapped up in a towel with
his shower flip-flops on.

It's cold, man.

But, you know, we've seen guys
give him a run for his money.

You don't want to put him

My mental game is probably the strongest
part of my golf game, to be honest,

but need to sack up and prove it to
myself that, you know, I do belong there.

[Sahith] Good morning, guys.

[commentator] And that first bounce
went a little harder than he thought.

This is a big putt for
momentum early in the round.

Oh, he made a tour
around the edge.

Scottie's third shot did not
check up the way he expected.

Up on the green,
Sahith Theegala.

At the second for birdie.

He got it there and
had it read perfectly.

A rare two at the
second for Sahith.

Sahith Theegala to
stay at 13 under.

[Rapaport] Sahith's off to a solid
start. He gets to the third hole.

He's in a bunker, but, you
know, all good, normal.

[Rapaport] He hits a shot,
and then we see him walking

right over to a rules official. And
you're like, "What's going on here?"

Uh, I was near a lip, and on my backswing,
I noticed I clipped a piece of sand.

[commentator 2] Sahith, he feels that
he touched the sand on his last hole

when he was taking
his backswing.

Now, it is a penalty if you touch the
sand while your ball is in the bunker.

So it's gonna be a
two-shot penalty for him.

[Dethier] Nobody else
sees the sand move.

Nobody in person, nobody up
close, nobody watching on TV.

Even when the 4K
cameras zoom in,

you can't tell for sure
that any sand moves.

- [commentator 3] I don't see much there.

[commentator 3] I'd be arguing
with Deuce again when I got done.

round, and all of a sudden,

[Zuël] There has been many greats
of the game of golf in the past

who have been in similar situations
and have not done the same.

To be able to do that
with millions on the line,

that just shows what kind
of a guy Sahith Theegala is.

But for him, you just feel heartbroken
that it's happened now of all times.

[Sahith] I come across as pretty easygoing
and let stuff slip off my shoulders,

but inwardly, I'm really,
really competitive.

I hate losing.

It bothers the hell out of
me when I hit a shitty shot

or… make a stupid mistake.

[Carl] As far as the penalty,
yeah, I mean, it's cost us,

but maybe adds a little
more fuel to the fire.

And we're just gonna
keep playing hard.
