01x04 - Peng vs. Peng

Post by bunniefuu »

-Yi, I think that
spot's clean now.

-Oh, sorry, I was thinking.

-Exhausting, right?

That's why I don't
think anymore.

-The past few days have
been pretty amazing.

-Helping Fèng huáng
and Sewer Koi.

- Epic!
- Yes! But also no.

I mean, we've had
some close calls.

My and Everest's
magic is unstoppable,

but also very
stoppable, you know?

Because we haven't mastered it.

We need to learn
how to control it,

to command it, to sharpen it.

-Oh-hoo, I didn't know I
knew Shaolin stick fighting!

-So far, we know I
can summon creatures

and Everest can summon nature.

When we were down in the sewer

and Everest made
the water swell,

I almost, in a
way... directed it.

-Until you didn't.

-Exactly. But I did...
for a hot second.

So I... I'm thinking we
just need to figure out

how I can direct nature better.

-I think you guys just need
more practice and I can help.

I mean, come on, look at me.

This didn't just
happen overnight.

- Practice makes perfect, am I right?
- Perfectly delusional.

-My basketball coach said
practice makes improvement,

not perfection.

But then he said, "You just
got to know when to stop."

And that I shouldn't practice
my alley-oops anymore at all.

Because... I must be
perfect at it already!

-Nai Nai! Zao...

-Shhh.

-What are we doing?

Should I be scared?
I'm feeling scared.

-Mr. Lung, the famous candy-maker
from down the street, closed up shop.

-What? This is scary!

His candied fruit sticks
were my childhood!

Which means my
childhood is over.

Which means I'm
no longer a child.

Which means, I should
be eating like an adult!

-Shh. We don't have time for
your mid-mid-mid-life crisis.

-So... why are we hiding?

-Now that Mr. Lung is
out of the picture,

there's a hole in
the candy market,

and I want to fill that hole!

But so does Mrs. Chen
from across the street.

I need to beat her to market!

-Whoa, Nai Nai.

I didn't know you could roll
like that! You are super nimble.

-Tai Chi, hot water with
lemon, and the desire to win.

-Noted.

Mr. Lung's Splendid
Candied Fruit Gift Box?

-My childhood is not dead.

-These are not for eating!
These are for research!

I've tried three different recipes
to recreate the candied fruit,

but they all failed.

The secret is the
candy-colored dust.

I haven't figured out
what it is... yet!

But I will, before Mrs. Chen.

-You have to. For
all the children!

-The thing is, every time I
make a new batch of candies,

the next day they are gone!

And I know Mrs. Chen
is stealing them

to stop me from selling
them before she does!

I just need proof.

-What is everyone doing?

-Spying on Mrs. Chen.

-Talking about Mrs. Chen
being a nimble lemon.

- Aiya,Ma.

I can't believe you still think
Mrs. Chen is stealing your sweets.

I'm pretty sure there's
a simpler explanation.

Like rats.

-Oh, that is not
simpler. It's grosser.

-I think we should just
get a security camera

so we can see what's going on.

-I already have a
security camera.

-I'm talking about a
camera that actually works.

-My camera works!

You put it up, people
come, they see it,

they think someone is watching,

so no funny business!

Except Mrs. Chen, she's all
about the funny business.

That's not even funny!

-That's my point!

This way we can catch Mrs.
Chen and her unfunny business.

-I don't need a camera
to know it's Mrs. Chen,

but I'm not above
proving you wrong,

so go ahead and get your
fancy camera that "turns on."

-Can we get up now?

-I'm pretty comfy here.

We are ready to train!

So, uh... how do we do that?

-Well, the times Yi's
magic worked best

was when she and Everest
were totally in sync.

Like when a band plays music.

They have to be on the same page
and have the right chemistry...

-Waa! Can I be in that band?
I'm in insane cowbell-ist!

-I have broken down Yi and
Everest's practice session

into three parts.

Getting in sync.

Everest's magic with nature.

And three: Yi's magic
directing Everest's magic.

-Great! Let's start.

Okay, um, Everest can
hum for the water to rise

and I can direct it into a wave.

-But first things first,

like starting with number
one: getting in sync.

-Oh, right. Got it.

-March third. Yi and
Everest's magic practice.

Session one. Attempt one.

-Aaah!

Aaah!

-Practice attempt one:
complete and total failure.

-Aaah! Aaah! Aaah!
Aaah! Ah-aah! Aaah!

Ooh, oh!

-Practice attempt two:
failed due to wind...

and an odd attraction to Peng.

Hey, Yi... Yi!

- Aah!
- Ah!

-Practice attempt three: failed due
to... I don't even know anymore!

But hair and face... in place!

-Why can't we do
anything with water?

I mean, somehow the
wind keeps butting in.

-And it's got some
kind of beef with me.

Why do you hate me, wind?

Yi!

Show me Mrs. Chen
stealing my sweets.

I can't figure out how to
work this "turn on" camera.

O-M-G! You're kidding me.

So? Is it Mrs. Chen?

-Oh, uh... actually, for some reason,
the video is, uh, uh, glitching.

So I have to take it
to the shop to fix it.

I'll be able to get it back to
you by, um... tomorrow morning.

-Hah! My old camera
wouldn't glitch.

-Everest! You're the one
taking the candied fruit?

You've been caught on tape
sneaking Nai Nai's treats!

Nai Nai can't know
about Everest.

In fact, we can't let
anyone know about Everest.

What do we do?

-Can't you just tell her that
you saw rats on the video?

-Yeah, but she'll still
ask for video evidence.

You know she doesn't
let things go.

I have an idea. We
recreate the footage.

-How are we supposed to do that?

-We sneak in after closing, film
one of us taking the treats,

and then show Nai Nai
that it wasn't Everest.

So... who wants the
wrath of Nai Nai?

-Not me. I want to live.

-I live with her, so I'm
already at my wrath limit.

-Fine, I'll do it.

I will sacrifice myself and
play "Candied Fruit Thief One."

I am great at taking
things and eating them.

Plus, Nai Nai is always mad
at me for something anyway,

so it'll just be
like any other day.

-Because the camera loves me and
I love the camera, I'll sh**t it.

-You have to be behind
the camera for that.

You can't just sh**t yourself.

-Ah, you're right!

I'll do a selfie dump after
so my face will get jealous.

-Great! I'll direct.

And... action!

Cut!

-I think we got it.

-Great, that's a wrap.

-I hate to be "that actor,"

but I'm feeling like I could
try it a different way,

uh, to give you options!

-I think you've eaten
all your options.

We better get out before
Nai Nai catches us.

-When I commit, I commit.

Mmm, sweet!

Extra sweet!

- Who do you work for?
- Aah!

I... I don't know what
you're talking about!

Am I dreaming?

-You wish! Did
Mrs. Chen send you?

-No, no. It was just me.
I'm sorry, Nai Nai...

-You're not allowed
here ever again!

-Uh, when you say ever, is
that more like a day or...

-What's going on?

-Ask the traitor.

-Esh, I don't feel so good.

-That's your guilty conscience!

-Or the amount of
sugar you ingested.

NAI NAI: "Candied
fruit coming soonest."

That's not even a
word, Mrs. Chen.

That's it! I'm going to
use my secret weapon.

Wood ear fungus.

-Wood ear fungus? Sounds
like a deadly secret weapon.

- Dui!It is the secret to
many delicious Chinese dishes.

And maybe,just maybe...

it's the key to Mr. Lung's
surprisingly hard-to-replicate candies.

Not to mention, wood
ear keeps things moving,

if you know what I mean.

-That would definitely ward off
Peng from your treats. Right, Peng?

Peng?

Peng! What's going on?

Everest, what happened?

Don't dribble
basketball and run?

-No, we don't eat
basketballs, Everest. Sorry.

-Hey! Get back here, Peng!

-Peng!

Peng!

Peng!

-How is he so fast?
He's never fast!

-Stop!

- Got him!
- Hold him down!

-Aah!

Yeah, nope!

-Ugh! Ew, gross!

Magic practice sidetrack
number... I lost count.

-Whoa, whoa, Peng! Calm down.

What's wrong with you?

-What's wrong with his eyes?

-I don't think this is Peng.

-What do you mean?

-I think Everest is trying to
say Peng isn't being himself,

which I guess is not playing
basketball and not eating dumplings.

-There's a creature
inside of him!

The creature is taking
over Peng's body.

It's gotten bigger
since my last scan.

-Maybe I can tell the creature
to stop taking over Peng's body.

-We didn't practice that!

Because it's not on your
list of magical skills!

-Nah, I'm just gonna play!

-Help me.

I'm scared.

-How did the
creature get in you?

-I don't know! I hope
not through my ear holes.

-Oh, the creature's
activity has slowed.

-Yeah, but we need the
creature to get out of Peng,

not stay in Peng.

The creature's sugar
level is through the roof!

-Aah! Aah! Aaah!

-I think Peng's trying to
fight the creature out!

-Come on, Peng, you can do it!

-No, Peng! Stop!

That's not very good.

-We have to do something!

-I'm losing!

You gotta contain me!

-Everest!

My music is only calming
the creature momentarily.

-We need to get it out
before Peng beats up... Peng!

-I don't know how.

-There must be another way!

Medically speaking, one could say
Peng has a parasite-like organism

feeding off the sugar in his
body. And if that is the case,

then the quickest way to remove the
parasite from its host would be...

- surgery.
- That's a no!

Maybe we can get it out
in a more natural way...

like Nai Nai's wood ear fungus!

She said it "moves" things.

If we can get Peng to eat it, maybe
the creature will get pushed out.

-Uh, well, but my way would be faster,
but sure, yeah, let's try your way.

-Everest, can you hum
up some wood ear fungus?

-Come on, Peng!

If you wanna get the creature
out of you, you have to eat it.

-And fast, before the
creature takes over entirely.

Fun buddies. Fungus buddies.

Okay, someone get a bucket!

-Ah, that didn't work. It just
made the creature way more angry!

JIN: He's running
on pure adrenaline!

And he wants more sugar!

-Peng! Stop!

Wind!

Everest, summon wind!

Aah! Ah! Ah! Ah! Aah!

-Get out of Peng's body!

-Ugh!

Is he okay, Everest?

Peng! I'm so glad you're back.

Oh, no, you don't!

It's losing strength without
a host, but still aggressive.

Probably due to the
high sugar intake.

This was the creature
in your body.

- How did you get it out of me?
- Well, Yi and Everest did it.

They worked their
magic together,

and Yi commanded
the creature out.

-I was able to channel my anger
to match the creature's anger

and tell it that
I meant business.

-But I couldn't have done
it without you, buddy.

-Yi and Everest magic session
one. Attempt six: success!

-It was a team effort.

-I'm sorry for
attacking you, Everest.

-Uh, guys, hate to break
up love fest, but...

-Cover your ears!

-Aw, we... we have to help
them. They're... they're scared!

-Uh, you're definitely channeling
the wrong emotion here.

They tried to take
over Peng's body!

-Don't be fooled by their
cute, adorable, innocent faces!

-Guys, they're still
creatures who need help.

And we help creatures.

Who knows what
they've been through?

I know when I'm
scared, I can lash out.

Don't worry, xiao peng you. We'll
figure out what to do with you.

- Look! They're shedding.
- Colorful dust?

-Wait. Could this be the powder
on Mr. Lung's candied fruits?

If it is, does that mean that
Mr. Lung knew about these creatures?

This is Mr. Lung's shop.

Hmm. No creatures here.

-Looks like Mr. Lung
left in a hurry.

-If I had a candy shop,
I would never leave.

Or leave really slowly.

-Hamster wheels?

-Mr. Lung must have kept
these creatures and fed them.

- I wish someone would keep me and feed me.
- Isn't that what your mom does?

-And he must have put them on these
wheels so they could shed dust.

And in order to shed dust,
they had to be fed sweets.

That's why, at HQ, when we fed them
the candied fruit, they shed dust.

-These creatures must have had a
symbiotic relationship with Mr. Lung.

He gave them a place
to live and eat.

The little guys gave Mr. Lung
candy dust to put on his treats.

-And he found the
perfect balance.

- Too little sugar makes them weak.
- I feel that!

- Too much makes them go crazy.
- Oh, I feel that, too!

-But since Mr. Lung's gone,

they have nowhere to
go and nothing to eat.

-Which is why, out
of desperation,

the creature invaded Peng's
body for his high sugar content.

But it... it was too much,

which is why he lost control
and became a monster.

-Moderation is key.

O-M-G, did I just
say that? So wise!

-I wonder what
happened to Mr. Lung...

Look, a drawing of our creature.

Looks like parchment
of some sort.

Let's see if we can
find some more pieces.

"Minticon." We need to
put all these together.

-The analysis shows that the
age of the paper fiber and ink

is more than 300 years old.

-This documents the Lung
family's history for generations.

Which means Minticon might've
been around for generations, too.

But I don't see any stories in
here about them. From what we have,

I can't tell when or how the
Minticon came into the family,

or even if the family is still
around so we can return them.

-And we can't set them free either.
They'll just invade another human.

-No, thank you!

-Whatever their story is,

there definitely are
other people out there

who not only see creatures, but
also have a relationship with them.

Th... That's huge.

-They had their own
secret creatures.

-Like Everest is
our secret creature.

-The most important thing now is
to find the Minticon a new home.

Let's grow these
guys a new home.

-Are you sure, Yi?

I'm really happy being
Plain Jane Peng right now.

-Trust me.

Go to your new home, Minticon.

- What are those plants anyway?
- Sugar cane.

-Candy comes from vegetables?

-Oh, come on! I'll be moderate.

-They're happy now.
They have a new home.

-And a new purpose.

NAI NAI: "Almost just
like Mr. Lung's..."

-You win, Mrs. Chen, you win.

I thought I banned you!

Oh, who cares, there are
no good treats here anyway.

-Your dumplings are
still the best in town.

-Sweet tooth, sweet mouth.

I've tried every
ingredient known to man,

but I couldn't recreate
the candied fruit!

Mr. Lung took his
secrets with him,

which is a move I respect.

-Do you think this would help?

-Where did you get this?

-Um...

Long story.
