disqualified from
St. Petersburg.

- This is the first time
in 100 plus year history

of IndyCar racing that a winner
will lose the win for good.

- There's no doubt that we were
in breach of the rules.

I failed my team miserably.

It's embarrassing. It's an
embarrassing thing to get wrong.

- Did it make you, at least
for a moment or two,

think back to 500 last year
and how that went?

- It's easy, then,
for people to question,

you know, what happened
before that. What else?

- It's a [bleep] set-up.
[Bleep], [bleep].

- As a result of
the disqualification,

Newgarden's win
in the Grand Prix

was denounced and given
to Pato O'Ward.

- So you are the new winner
of St. Pete.

- You know, a win is a win,
we'll take the points.

- There's all this drama
happening off track

for the Penske drivers.
How are they going to respond?

- Any driver is going to be
sensitive to people

questioning their integrity.

- McLaughlin's first week
started with controversy.

He has answered it emphatically.

McLaughlin wins at Barber
and Team Penske back on top!

- We're four races in,
it's been an exciting season,

four different winners who had
some off-track scandal.

The hype around it is
as high as it's ever been.

And we haven't even
got to May yet.

That's when the excitement
really starts.

What did you miss?

Well, you missed
a very tumultuous

second couple hundred days
of the year.

Yeah. Life exploded.

- Conor Daly has enjoyed
several good years

with Ed Carpenter Racing,
but that time is up.

- Basically, everything
in life changed

except for, like,
the important stuff.

Like, I still have my girlfriend
and my family is still alive,

so that's good.
[laughs]

- He lost his ride late in 2023.

Ed Carpenter Racing was not
having the results they wanted

and they decided to try
something different.

- The news came to me
as a complete shock.

I had no idea.
It was a gut punch.

Literally like you ripped away
my entire career and it sucked.

- Even though that stung,
I'm sure,

I know that he believes he can
still be full time in IndyCar.

- I don't know what they
were trying to do.

Basically, you try to
figure out who was to blame

for the cars being slow.

Hey, Hinch.

Cool.
Good luck, Hinch.

You got to always fist bump
Hinch before you leave.

It's just a Canadian,
you know he's Canadian

and that's got to be good luck,
I feel like.

[laughs]

And then every weekend
when that 20 car continued to be

very much at the back,
it turns out it wasn't me.

[upbeat music]

In 2024, his only confirmed
race is the Indy 500,

with a different team,
with Dreyer & Reinbold

and Cusick Motorsports.
And it's a good ride.

- I could probably do
this drive my eyes closed
to the race track.

This is a drive that
I have done so many times.

Shout out to our captain,
Josef Newgarden,

America's hero, Indy 500
champion for all of us.

I don't know if we're allowed

- Coming back here every year
is super special

as the hometown kid.

And he's a fan favorite
for sure.

He's such a character.

It 's a big opportunity
for him.

But there's also a lot
of pressure

because he needs to perform
and show people

that he's still capable
of wheeling an IndyCar

quick enough to deserve
a full-time ride.

How are we looking?

- Good.

- I never like talking about
last shots,

because there are so many
unknowns in this sport

and I've seen some
crazy things happen.

But there's no doubt
that a strong performance

at the 500 this year is going
to help Conors's future

in a big way.

- This is where everyone comes
to try to be the best

and to win this race means
the world to anyone.

But this is where I grew up.
Like I live here.

I grew up here.
I was born in the hospital

that I can see
from this race track.

You know what I mean?
Like, I love this event.

And when you offer a driver
like myself,

a chance to get back
in that race again,

it's better than Christmas.

All I have in front
of me is the Indy 500.

There isn't a worry
about anything else

other than showing up in May
and giving it

everything we've got to win
the greatest race in the world.

And I would love
to win for that crowd.

has taken the lead
of the Indianapolis 500.

- Just kind of tripped
into the lead.

I guess I was like,
"Oh, there's no more cars left.

Like this is it.
I'm in the lead now."

- Everybody standing
and waving for Conor Daly.

- I still will never forget
the rush of adrenaline

that flowed through
my whole body.

I bet if you would have
shot me with a g*n,

the b*llet would have
bounced off at that point

because, like,
I felt invincible.

- He has never led a lap
at the Indy 500 until today.

I think Conor Daly
likes leading this race.

- We could have won if we didn't
have the tire hit our car.

- Oh, Graham Rahal!
- Big crash.

- Rahal lost it
out of the pits.

- Tire rolled out into
the middle of the track,

bounced off the wall right
into Conor Daly's path,

and he hit it like a football.

- It haunts me late at night,
and I hate to think about it,

but the fact that now
I've proven to myself

that I can run up front, that
I know how to race up front.

I'm going to be up front
at some point in the Indy 500.

- If personality
was all you needed,

then Conor would have a ride
for the rest of his life.

- Well, I guess
we'll try again...

- Unfortunately,
he ends up bouncing

from ride to ride to ride,

just trying to string together
whatever he can.

And it's not because
he's a bad driver.

He's just not an elite driver.

- And if you're not
an elite driver,

you're never going
to get into a car

the job security

that you need to become
a Scott Dixon.

- I don't know

I've been with the team
for 20 plus years

and get to drive IndyCars fast,
which is fun.

Kit, what's your favorite car?

- A Lamborghini.
- A Lamborghini?

Wow. It changes daily.

You know,
it sounds really cliche,

but his first word was car.

I feel like people would think
that you make that up,

but it really was actually.

- Kit is car mad, though.

- Yeah.

My dad raced. He did dirt track.

He did road course racing.

The transition for me
was watching my cousins

race go-karts
at the age of seven.

Then I was just relentless
for weeks until, you know,

I started racing myself.

I just want to go faster
and meet new people.

I left New Zealand probably
around the age of 15 or 16,

and then to Australia,
then to America.

So big shift.

- We met in 2006,
and then we got engaged

in that following December,
and we got married in England

the following February.

- We had Poppy in 2009,
Tilly in 2011,

and then Kit came along many
years later in 2019.

And I guess for them it's,
you know,

they're pretty much
a racing family as well,

that's kind of all
they've known.

- We've kind of always
just, like, gone with him

and been there for the races.

- It really is fun.

It's a good adventure
as well.

I love being...

- Yeah. We go to lots
of cool places, don't we?

- Yeah.
- Travel.

Stay in the motorhome.
- Yeah.

- Got the bunk beds
in the motorhome.

To have 20 consecutive years

of winning a race
is pretty special.

Chasing records. Um...
it's been exceptional.

It's very fast.

- It's all about Scott Dixon.

- The defending series champion
in a league of his own.

- Scott Dixon is a six-time
IndyCar champion!

- He is the greatest IndyCar
driver of this generation.

If you poll the other drivers
in the paddock,

"Who's the best,
other than you?"

It's almost going to be
unanimously Scott Dixon.

- He's the winner of the

- Dixon won the race in 2008,

but when you compare it
to the rest of his resume,

six championships,


to only have one 500,
it almost seems like a travesty.

- Winning the 500 is so special,

it's only a matter of time
before it happens again.

Like even just to have won it
once is really, really special.

Like some people never
get that opportunity.

- Yeah, I think that's
the better way to look at it.

Like even to be at
the race is pretty special.

And then to be on a shortlist
of, you know,

maybe 70 people or less.
- I know.

- It's very significant.
- Yes. It's amazing.

- But that's what makes
you want it more.

- I feel horrible saying it.

I actually hate that race, I do.

What has Scott got? Four second
places at the Indy 500?

But that race has caused us
so much pain.

- I was drinking the milk.

I was like, "Oh my God,
it's happened. He's done it."

We're coming
to our last pit stop.

There's nothing
that can take this away.

- Oh, Dixon locks up!

Is that going to be
a pit speed violation?

- Scott Dixon,
after leading 95 laps,

he has to do
a drive-through penalty.

- Absolutely devastating.

The man that's led more laps
around the Indy 500

than any other driver in history

sees his chance for a win
absolutely disappear.

- I thought that broke him,
actually.

I thought,
"Oh God, I'm not sure

what the recovery is from this."

That night was the first time
we got into bed

and he said nothing.

So I just put my hand across,
on his chest.

Oh my God.

It makes me actually
so emotional now.

But I've never seen him cry.

But I felt that he was crying.

- That was probably
one of the most painful things

I've ever seen happen
to another driver.

He went over the speed limit
by 0.1 miles an hour.

And that's the difference
between another Indy 500

or a 20th-place finish.

- That's what winning
is all about.

You know,
it's about the downtimes,

learning from those downtimes,
turning them into positives.

And it's going to help you
in the long run.

- I've got something I've been
meaning to give to you

when you do it again.
- Mm-hmm.

- It's just a rock
that I painted like,

a couple years ago. It says
"Indy 500 winner Scott Dixon".

- Aw.
- I need to give you that.

- That sounds really cool.
- Oh, gosh.

I spent four years trying to
teach you how to eat nicely.

Why did you do that on

- I think he knows
what he's doing.

- The beauty of Scott Dixon
is that the racing Scott

is a completely different guy
to the behind-racing Scott.

- He is just a born racer.

That's why you've seen
this guy and everyone's like,

"Why hasn't he bloody
left the sport yet?" you know?

- Last year
there was people saying,

halfway through the season,
"Is it time for Scott?"

And I was like, no, no, no.
And then sure enough,

he bangs out three wins.
I was like, "I told you."

- Scott Dixon is going
to be a winner again.

- Last year was kind
of a reminder.

Scott Dixon's not done yet.
He still got some fire left.

- Scott Dixon, two races
in a row in Victory Lane.

That's number 55,
all time for the Iceman.

- His 56th career win

will be his third
in the last four races.

Scott Dixon closes out
the season by winning

the Firestone Grand Prix
of Monterrey.

- His peers and competitors,

asking the question:
"How does Dixon do it?"

- Dixon has shown us
time and time again

that you just never
count him out.

Long Beach was another
example of that.

- He's gonna go back
to the winner's circle!

if you're not winning,

you're going to be removed
pretty quickly.

I think it gets to a point

when you're maybe not
enjoying it as much.

And, you know, I haven't really
had a glimpse of that yet.

Goals, you know, they're
the same every year, man.

That's first to win
the Indy 500,

and secondly to win
the championship.

- Who bloody knows,
I'm just going to be honest.

I don't know.

I really... I would love him to
more than anything.

And I'm going to tattoo
the Indy 500 on my booty

if he wins, I promise you.

I'm saying it live on camera

because it's such
a special feeling.

- I think Will is the one that's
always talked about retirement.

So, you know, I think
he brings it up himself.

- Why all these retirement

As long as I keep going,
I think Dixon will keep going.

These are the different

nothing for granted.

and the resulting fallout.

is best time of year.

For this month,
our lives kind of shift

to inside of the race track.

During this month,
I think if you're a driver,

it feels like
you're a superstar,

it feels like you're a
superhero, just in this town.

And that's a very special thing.

Like, that's a really
cool feeling.

It's the most special time
as an Indycar driver.

- Throughout the season,
IndyCar is kind of like
a traveling circus.

Month of May is different.
This becomes home.

- You literally move into
this little city

that is the speedway and
you live there for three weeks.

- There's a golf course
at the speedway.

- There it is.

- Different drivers
hang out together.

- There's just a lot of fishing,
over yonder.

It's such a cool time
to be in Indianapolis.

And it's even more cool
to be a driver, right?

Not many people are like, "Oh,
I'm super excited for May."

But for us, it's like, this is
the coolest time of the year.

- May 1st hits
and all of a sudden it's like,

oh yeah, like someone's life
is going to change

at the end of this month.

- There it is.

Not a bad little space
when we get some lights.

I mean, this is perfect,
honestly.

We got everything you need
as a young adult

to cook, now,
with an air fryer.

I don't know where
I'm going to put this stuff.

My GP weekend isn't as exciting
as it normally would be.

Indy GP is one
of my favorite road races.

I've done pretty well here
in the past in the Indy GP,

so I'm going to miss racing

It's the worst feeling in the
world being at a race track,

specifically the Indianapolis
Motor Speedway

and not racing
in an IndyCar race.

Um... I hate it.

I hope these next few days go
by as fast as humanly possible,

and then they all slow down.

Your thoughts as you enter
another month of May here

at Indianapolis Motor Speedway?

- Yeah.
It's been a great start.

Interesting.
Lots of things going on on track

and off track, but I'm excited
for this May to start.

- Obviously, I think everybody's
excited to kick off

the month of May
and it is actually fun

to kick it off
with the road course.

So looking forward to that.

- Everybody's got the Indy 500
in the back of their mind,

but they still need to focus
on what they're doing and

try to win the Indy GP.

And there have been several
that have won the GP,

gone on to win the Indy 500,

and they all feel like
the momentum carries over.

It's a way to get the month
started the right way.

An incredible show lined up.

A wild one.

So, Chase, how are you

Right off the top of the show,

we should probably
get into Team Penske.

They have announced
some suspensions.

Luke Mason,
number 2 race engineer,

Ron Ruzewski, managing director,
Team Penske, IndyCar,

Tim Cindric,
president of Team Penske,

and Robbie Atkinson,
senior data engineer,

will be suspended
from Team Penske

for the next two IndyCar races,
including the Indianapolis 500.

They've literally taken away
some of their smartest people

for the most important month
of our sport.

To all those folks that
wanted blood in the streets,

well, you got it.
So there you go.

- We're okay?

- Yup.

- You know, for me personally,
you know, I was embarrassed

and to see this happen
to our team because I've tried

to set a standard in the sport
for many years.

And this certainly doesn't
show that

when you think about
the situation overall.

The drivers, all three of them
were penalized

with loss of the wins
for Newgarden,

the points for both McLaughlin
and Power, they were fined, etc.

So the league
took care of that.

But that wasn't probably enough

and I had to look inside
our organization.

And when you look at the facts,
it was an issue of process

and it was an issue
of communication.

And once I understood that,
you know,

we made our decisions
on penalties

within the organization
and we moved on.

There was no malicious intent
by anybody on our team.

But I'll take the penalty
and I'm certainly embarrassed.

- It's go-fast day
for the Sonsio Grand Prix

and ideal conditions
for qualifying.

- This is a huge blow to Josef

because he's losing
the top strategist

in the entire sport as
he tries to defend his victory.

He loses his strategist
and his engineer

for the biggest month
of the year.

And unfortunately for Will,
the guy who loaded the software

onto the three cars
works on his crew.

And the IndyCar team manager
is his strategist.

So now he gets screwed
for the whole month of May,

and he didn't do
anything wrong.

- So that's an engineer
and a strategist

from both of those stands.

Those are arguably the two most

important positions
on pit wall.

And we are heading
into the longest,

most strategically difficult
race of the year.

That also happens to be
the biggest race on Earth

in the Indy 500.

Not having your best guy
on the stand for that?

Huge blow.

- All drivers want to get
the month of May

off to the best possible start.

Well, that starts right here.

- Will Power
has a lot of confidence.

Could it be another pole
and maybe another win

for Will Power
at the Indy GP.

- His wife Liz is healthy.
He's happy at the track.

to know that I just matched

really good sign for Dixon

at a track where he's won,

try to bump his way in.

you're fighting for hundreds.

The margins are razor-thin
here to find those precious,

of a second that you might need.
