Deep in the southern hemisphere

lies a mystical island

created by

the raw forces of nature.

The Maori call this place

Aotearoa--

land of the long white cloud.

The rest of the world knows it

as New Zealand.

And high above its deep ravines,

its raging rivers

and plummeting waterfalls

towers a mountain,

thousands of feet high

with Antarctic winds

carrying a call far and wide,

an invitation

to reach the summit.

(helicopter blades whirring)

It's a call 16 ordinary

Americans have answered.

If they can climb the mountain

in 14 days,

they'll earn their share

of a million-dollar prize.

But if they miss that deadline,

they'll be sent home

with nothing.

In this vast

and unforgiving landscape,

they will have only

themselves to rely upon.

Oh!

MANU:

As they brave

miles of elevation

-Don't let go. (grunts)

MANU:

traverse Arctic lakes

and cross deep chasms

Before we start,

I'd like to acknowledge

the people of this land

we call the Tangata whenua,

who historically occupied

this area and still do.

I just want to acknowledge them.

Let me ask you,

Great adventure.

Your challenge

is to reach the summit.

To reach a what?

JENNYE: We have to climb

a freaking mountain.

I'm feeling the weight

and the gravity of what

we're about to do.

-Wow.

-(others murmuring)

ROSE:

This is crazy.

Honey, that is a big

(bleep) mountain. (laughs)

MANU: Each of you brings

your own reason for being here.

Your reason is what's gonna

drive you up that mountain.

You have tears in your eye.

Can you explain why?

AMY:

I'm here for myself

because I've done

so much for my family,

and I'm here to do this

to prove to my family

that I can do it.

(crying)

So I just got super emotional.

I'm gonna add something

to your motivation.

Please step forward.

Want to open that bag?

(gasps)

(crying)

-That's crazy.

-Oh, my God.

That's insane.

-There's a whole bunch more.

-(all laughing)

That's a million dollars.

Take that with you

and put it in your backpack.

You're gonna carry this

to the summit.

That's a lot of money.

I've never seen that much money.

And I work at a bank.

Each of you will carry an equal

share of the million dollars,

and that prize will be shared

by the few

who make it to the top.

If anybody quits,

that money disappears.

It's gone.

There's one more catch--

you must travel together.

You'll only be as fast

as your slowest member.

If you miss the 14-day deadline

to reach the summit

you will all go home

with nothing.

(gasps)

(bleep) just got real.

NICK:

It got serious pretty quick.

What concerns me

the most is probably,

uh, the time limit.

14 days to get to the summit.

We cannot have people

falling behind.

It's not gonna be easy,

but everyone needs to keep up.

You're going to need this.

We need a map.

(laughs)

You are now the leader.

(cheering)

MANU:

On that map,

you're going to find

checkpoints

with food and shelter,

crucial for your expedition,

that you're going

to need to reach

before sundown each day.

Otherwise, you'll be left

on the mountain

exposed to the elements.

I got you all.

-JEANNIE: Yeah!

-You better.

But I have to warn you,

there's something

you won't find on that map.

Something more sinister

that's gonna be out there,

lurking, keeping an eye

on your every move.

We call it

the mountain's keeper.

It has its own way

of sorting out who is worthy

of reaching the summit

and will force you to make

some tough decisions.

Uh-oh.

This mountain has eyes.

GEOFF:

What-what did

He said the hills have eyes

or something like that?

That something's gonna be

watching us?

The Mountain's Keeper is gonna

determine if we're worthy.

I have no idea what that means,

but I'm kind of scared.

Are you ready to go?

-ALL: Yeah.

-Let's do it.

I wish you a safe journey.

(exhales)

Your time starts now.

-I'd get moving.

-(bleep)

Who knows how to read a map?

(laughs)

Yeah, baby!

-To the summit.

-(cheering, whooping)

JEANNIE:

Summit, here we come!

PUNKIN:

My gosh. Look how gorgeous.

It's like Romancing the Stone.

Remember that movie?

(laughter)

Okay, does anybody know

where we're going right now?

(laughter)

MANU:

Traveling as a group,

they've only got 14 days

to trek over

100 treacherous miles.

Starting in a deep valley,

the group's endurance

will be tested

right out of the gate.

They face a 2,000-foot incline

to reach a precarious ridgeline

for their first checkpoint.

From there, they will then

make a steep descent

before scrambling back up

to higher altitudes

where they will have to contend

with an alpine lake crossing

and a dangerous

glacier traverse.

All before they tackle

the final icy ascent

up thousands of feet

to the summit.

JEANNIE:

This is gonna be insane, guys.

Are we there yet?

(all laughing)

-BECKYLEE: What's your name?

-DENNIS: Dennis.

BECKYLEE:

Dennis. Beckylee.

-Beckylee? (laughs)

-Yeah. Nice to meet you.

DENNIS:

At this point,

I'm here for the money.

My strategy is going to be

to win people over,

make people laugh

-Ah! (laughs)

-(laughs)

But they don't realize

that I am willing

to take manipulating,

deceiving and cheating

to the furthest extent.

I'm breaking a sweat here

too, buddy.

-Don't worry.

-Oh, dude, I'm always sweating.

DENNIS:

I'm gonna be surprised

who makes it on top.

I don't think a lot

of the other contestants

have ever faced

something like this before.

My family, they're

so excited for me.

They think I'm a cool mom.

DENNIS:

I see a lot of moms.

(laughs)

I didn't expect that.

JEANNIE:

Yeah, this is awesome.

AMY:

My husband's like, "You lie,

you cheat, you steal--

it's a game."

-I'm like, "I can't."

-Yeah, I know.

You know why?

'Cause that's who we are.

We got to motivate

each other, man.

-Mom squad.

-AMY: Yeah.

AMY:

I'm not like

your average mountain climber,

hiking, camping girl.

(laughs)

Oh, who didn't sink the fastest.

I've never seen

mountains, hardly.

Never seen snow,

except once in my life.

And here I am climbing

to get to the top of the summit.

I think Amy today is

a little safe.

That's just the mom in me,

I guess.

I met a man 16 years ago

who had three kids.

He was single dad-ing it.

And those little humans

needed me.

And I just did

everything I could do

to make them safe and secure.

And that's who I am.

A middle-aged mom

who put herself

on the back burner for 15 years.

But I think Adventure Amy

got on that plane

and just said,

"The hell with it."

Let's just, let's go!

We're doing it.

We're doing it.

I never thought I'd be doing

something like this, ever.

I mean, who dreams this big?

And I know it's gonna be hard,

but I'm gonna do it.

It's gonna be so worth it.

I'm just following

right behind you, girl.

It's great to have moms

on the trip.

-ROSE: Mama's got you.

-AMY: Yeah.

(laughing)

Dude, how are you feeling

about the group?

THERRON:

People are cool,

but I don't think

people are strategizing yet.

And I think they think

this is about to be

a "we're all in this together"

kind of game.

-It's not.

-And it's definitely not.

Alliances,

that's how you win games.

You can't do anything alone.

And you have to be strategic

with who you choose.

I'm noticing some of the moms,

Jeannie, Amy and Rose,

getting together.

We do not have time

to waste around.

I don't want anybody to think

that we're close, though.

-Yeah, yeah, yeah.

-I think it's

gonna be too obvious.

THERRON:

SHWETA:

I'm very strategic.

I feel like I'm gonna

run circles around

everybody else here.

And I'm smarter than

people think I'm gonna be.

If you don't think I'm a threat,

you're just not

paying attention.

PRODUCER:

Small, but feisty?

Yeah. It's not about the size

of the dog in the fight.

It's the size of the fight

in the dog.

And I got some fight.

-We got, uh, swampiness, y'all.

-Oh, God.

Oh, (bleep).

-Is there a better way?

-I'm no geologist, Bo.

(bleep)

JEANNIE:

It's quicksand!

My feet are soaking wet.

ROBERT:

We'll do a sock thing.

What do you think?

TONY:

Yeah.

We're going to squeeze out

socks really quick.

Does anybody need more water?

DUSTY:

Oh, no. I really don't want

to have to take breaks.

Robert has a little bit too much

fake camp counselor energy.

I'm telling you all,

your feet are your wheels.

Don't get a flat tire.

"Hey, guys, listen up.

Just listen to your body.

It's gonna be okay."

And I'm sitting here going

"I'm 28. I'm not 12."

I was a camp counselor

for many years, so (laughs)

I-I work in the education field.

I love helping those kids who

don't see how

they fit into the world

and helping kind of guide them

and find a place

and find who they are.

Especially junior high kids

because they're at that age

where they're still moldable.

They still need

a good role model.

It's just the best job

in the world.

It really is.

AMY: Hey, Rob,

I think you're right, there.

My feet feel so much better.

-Right?

-AMY: Good job.

-JEANNIE: Thanks, Rob.

-AMY: Good call, Rob.

-DUSTY: Yeah.

Either way-either way,

we got to move.

I think something

people are forgetting is

we are supposed to get up

to the summit in 14 days.

At this rate,

I'm really concerned

with our ability to be able

to make it up there.

Guys, we got to pick it up.

DENNIS:

Jennye, you think we, uh,

we got to pick up pace here

a little bit?

-I think we absolutely do.

-DENNIS: Yeah.

JENNYE:

Therron, I think we got

to pick up the pace, hon.

-DUSTY: Yeah.

-JENNYE: On the, the walking,

like, actually,

-'cause we're not gonna make it

on the first day.

-Yeah. Okay.

We need to go up this path

straight across from us.

Looks perfect to me.

JENNYE:

Let's do it.

(grunting nearby)

ROBERT:

Don't fall.

This incline is gonna get

some folks.

Come on.

You just got to say,

"I have no choice."

I'm gonna get

in front of you, hon.

We needed to get

to that checkpoint today.

Y'all, we got to pick up

the pace if we want to make it

-to the good camp.

-(grunts)

We got to make it

on time, y'all.

Right now there are

two groups forming.

-One slow

-Side your feet in.

Side, not toe, side.

There you go.

-JENNYE: and the other fast.

-It's bad.

It's horrible.

Just keep going.

JENNYE:

I usually fall in the front

so that we can kind of push

and keep the pace.

(grunts)

I'm okay.

SHWETA:

Are we going or what's going on?

JENNYE:

We got to go, honey.

Like, we got to go.

"Let's go. Let's go."

That's not motivating.

(panting)

Feel the burn.

(grunting)

You got everyone? I think

we're still waiting for a few.

-You good?

-Yeah.

We can go catch up with them.

AMY:

All I got to think is,

I'm gonna rest at camp.

I picked a hell of a first time

to go camping.

THERRON:

Sticker bushes above us.

GEOFF:

We're gonna have to,

uh, army crawl.

-Just keep going.

-Yeah.

You guys, you're gonna have

to crawl up here,

and there's a lot of,

like, uh, pointy things.

BO:

It can cut like a knife.

JENNYE: Be careful,

the pointy things behind you.

-JEANNIE: Careful.

-(grunts)

PATI:

It just keeps

going up and up, man.

THERRON:

Yeah, Tony.

TONY:

We're spending some time trying

to climb through,

and Therron's taking charge

with the map and

this doesn't look

like we're going the right way.

Okay, y'all,

so here's the thing.

We thought this was

the right way,

but it's a dead end.

We were here, so then we thought

that this little water bin

right here was here.

This looks like this.

Four hours into the hike.

It's a (bleep) show.

We went the wrong way

for probably 45 minutes.

You see the distance that we

made in the wrong direction,

so I think everybody's

getting kind of peeved.

It's day one.

45 minutes is a lot

of draining energy.

That's a lot. Yeah.

BECKYLEE: We have 14 days

to get this done,

and I feel like now

we have to double-book it

to make up for this mistake.

I'm extremely worried

that we're not gonna make

checkpoint.

-Guys, are we going back down?

-THERRON: Yeah.

-Ready?

-All right.

(Amy groans)

ROBERT:

When you go down,

kind of keep your feet sideways.

AMY:

Sideways, all right.

ROBERT: It'll give you

a little more traction.

AMY:

Thanks, Rob.

SHWETA:

Come on.

(breathing heavily)

Tony, you got it.

TONY:

I have not climbed

a mountain before.

I mean, I've watched

Lord of the Rings,

uh, but I've never

seen anything like this.

JEANNIE:

It's just all uphill.

-Way harder than I thought.

-Me, too.

TONY:

I can't believe that I'm here,

about to embark

on this incredible journey.

For me,

it's definitely a huge change.

I've always been the fat kid.

Kids would have pool parties

all the time, and

ugh, I wouldn't even want to go

to these pool parties

with my friends

'cause I couldn't-- like

I-I didn't-- you know.

I didn't look like

all the other kids.

I never really liked

who I saw in the mirror

for most of my life.

I mean, it's hard to enjoy your

life when you're 406 pounds.

It held me back a lot,

my weight.

The biggest event

that has changed my life was

my wife got pregnant

and my, and my son was born,

and I was just like,

"I can't be a good father

and be this heavy," because

I just could feel myself dying.

So, I'm like, "I can't

I want to see this kid grow up."

I just knew I just had

to do something, and I did.

I started eating healthy

and I started working out,

and just-- I mean,

my workouts were walks.

And that turned into,

"I'm gonna run a marathon,"

and I did.

I went from that

down to 260 pounds,

and just like, really embracing

this, like, new body

and what my body could do.

And now I'm here for my kids.

-CHILD: Da-da!

-I'm here for my wife

and I'm here for the

ten-year-old version of myself

that thought

he wasn't worth anything,

'cause I'm gonna

prove him wrong.

MANU:

The group is only five hours

into their trek,

but the mountain

is quickly taking a toll.

(exhales):

Oh, my God.

I mean, where the hell

is this camp at?

MANU:

If they don't dramatically

increase their pace,

they won't make it

to the checkpoint before sunset.

(bleep)

JEANNIE:

I'm just going without stopping.

I think that's the most

easiest way to do it.

This is much harder

than I thought.

There's no path.

Either you got to step

on a bush

BECKYLEE:

I'm just pushing you.

Don't stop.

or step in a sinkhole

Ooh, ooh, ooh,

do not put your foot there.

JEANNIE:

Watch out here, too.

It's a big hole.

or step on top of a rock.

I was hoping there'd

be some kind of path here,

but there's nothing.

(panting)

Look how far we got, man.

DUSTY:

Hey, Dennis, one sec.

DENNIS:

Hey-hey, guys, I-I don't

even think we're halfway up.

We-we got to keep going.

Guys, we not gonna make it

if we don't go.

-Let's go. They'll pick it up.

-JENNYE: Suck it up.

I know it's hard.

-(grunts)

-JEANNIE: I'm so exhausted.

TONY (panting):

We got this.

We got this.

My backpack is so heavy.

-(both panting)

-TONY: Yeah.

You're doing good, man.

One step at a time.

Whoa.

-Tony?

-We're good.

(grunts)

Come on, Tony. Right here.

Tony, don't get hurt.

I'm good.

DUSTY:

Good job, Tone.

I could definitely tell

Tony was struggling.

He was doing a good job

of hiding it verbally,

but he was struggling,

and I fe-- I really feel bad.

It's the last little push

right here.

BECKYLEE:

Are you okay?

Tony? Tony?

-Hold on! Wait, hold on!

-(overlapping shouts)

-DENNIS: Hey, guys, Tony's down.

-NICK: He all right?

BECKYLEE:

Tony? Take his pack off.

JENNYE:

Uh-oh.

-BECKYLEE: Take his pack off.

-AMY: Pour some water on him.

PUNKIN:

Tony? Tony, can you hear us?

AMY:

He's shaking. Oh, God.

(wind whistling)

(Tony panting)

DUSTY: It's the last

little push right here.

-PUNKIN: Are you okay?

-No.

-Tony? Tony?

-PUNKIN: Hold on.

-DENNIS: Hey, guys, Tony's down.

-(overlapping shouts)

PUNKIN:

Uh-oh.

-Hang on.

-Is he okay?

-Just got to give him

some space.

-Pour some water on him.

BECKYLEE: Take his pack off.

-Wait, who is that?

-JEANNIE: Tony. Tony.

SHWETA:

ROSE:

AMY:

Oh, God. He's shaking.

-ROSE: Is he okay?

-MARK: Hey, how we doing?

MARK:

JEANNIE:

I don't know what to think.

So I'm just sitting and waiting.

I don't even know how to feel.

CLAUDIA: The biggest concern

is that this is your heart

causing the pain, okay?

TONY:

JEANNIE: The way Tony did this,

persevered, and look at this.

Like, we got to just get there.

I think they're coming

GEOFF:

when it's something

as serious as that,

you can't mess around.

Ultimately,

it's the doctor's call.

And I'm watching Tony

watch his money

just dissipate just like that,

and that-that's crushing.

Just wanted to do more.

MANU:

As the first member of the group

is taken off the mountain

he was carrying.

The first casualty

of the grueling trek ahead.

AMY:

JEANNIE:

Bye, Tony!

Wow.

BO:

Tony didn't quit.

His body quit on him.

-ROBERT: If you're hurting

-PUNKIN: Yeah.

BO:

I mean, that hit home,

because that could easily be me

or any one of us.

So, uh, that gave me

a cue to, uh,

watch what my body's telling me.

-Let's do this for Tony, guys.

-JEANNIE: Yeah.

-Hey, we got new motivation now.

-JEANNIE: Yeah,

-we definitely do, man.

-THERRON: Absolutely.

We got a reason.

JEANNIE:

Watch your footing coming up.

NICK:

When Tony goes down,

it's a wake-up call

because this is definitely

not easy.

My legs are giving out,

my calves are tightening up.

This is pretty difficult for me.

Being an ex-athlete, I've been

through a lot of stuff,

uh, physically and mentally.

At how uphill

this is gonna to be,

this is gonna be pretty tough

for Amy and Pati today.

And I'm thinking,

"This is only day one."

I'm not sure

how long they're gonna

make it in this game.

THERRON:

Are y'all serious? Okay

-What the hell?

THERRON: Oh, God.

Okay, positive thoughts.

The back is moving

a lot slower than the front.

Bo has been slowing

the group down.

-We're almost there.

-BECKYLEE: You good, Bo?

Yeah. Little breather.

THERRON:

We're taking five-minute breaks

every 12 steps.

If I don't make it

to the checkpoint today,

I'm gonna be very devastated.

You can't walk across

New Zealand so easy.

I'm trying not to show

signs of weakness,

but I'm struggling right now.

-Hold up!

-Hold up!

Uh, you know,

I'm a little older, I'm sore.

My muscles are aching

a little bit,

but I am not gonna quit.

Don't necessarily want

to stand out,

but I want people

to notice, "Hey,

there's something different

about that guy."

I'm from g*n Barrel City, Texas.

I'm a basketball coach

and I'm still teaching,

but I'm looking at retirement

at the end of the year.

I like spending time

at the house with my family,

on the sofa watching TV

and my three mutt dogs,

Fatty, Red and Deedee.

Get that.

I'm taking on this challenge

to show that I still got it.

I mean, I got calves enough.

I can hang with

these young bucks. (laughs)

ongoing journey.

PUNKIN:

your first checkpoint.

I feel for you,

but I did tell you,

this mountain is not a joke.

Now, do you see the sun?

It's already on its way down,

and there's a canyon there

that you're just not going

to be able to cross tonight.

It's too dangerous.

You're gonna have to sleep here,

on the trail, in the dirt,

drinking from the stream

and eating only

the freeze-dried food you have

with you in your backpacks.

If that keeps happening,

you're not going to make

the 14-day deadline.

Do you understand?

Tomorrow it gets harder.

So settle down,

have a good sleep if you can.

this is just a game,

If we don't make it up

the summit in 14 days,

nobody makes any money.

We leave here with nothing.

I really think we could have

been here, like,

two, three hours earlier.

the way you've talked

to people and made them feel.

I'm a military spouse,

and that's just kind of how I'm

trained to communicate.

I never even considered

that my name

was gonna be brought up.

I wanted everybody to think

but maybe I should have been

my military experience.

There's a lot more to it,

I-I think you guys

would all agree,

than just getting checkpoints,

But personality-wise

and toxicity-wise,
