Kelsey was the premier
party girl for our scene.

They like the limelight,

and they're catered
to everywhere they go.

But girls like Kelsey
can definitely get caught
up in this lifestyle.

One of those things
that he would do
is to find women,

that were good looking
and befriend them.

[Leila Barghouty] She had
a feeling that something
was wrong,

and she had been
calling law enforcement.

What it looks like here
is someone committed
a violent crime...

...and they're now
fleeing the scene.

[David Kohlmeier]
You just didn't really
know at the time,

was she a suspect
or was she the victim?

At one point, he threatened
to eat the male detective's
soul.

Just because there's
one victim...

...doesn't mean
there's not another.

[Barghouty]
On March 3rd, 2019,

officers show up to a house
in suburban Nevada.

There's watch communication
with Las Vegas Metro Police

over a woman in California

in regards to welfare checks
of the home.

They're checking on a home

where 25-year-old model,
Kelsey Turner, is staying.

But nobody answers the door.

And they notice that
the mail's piling up,

there's a package on the door.

No one's at home,

but the lights are still on.

[Randy Sutton] Officers saw
that the windows were open,

and that there were
signs of a struggle.

[Katelyn Newberg]
So, because one
of the doors was unlocked,

they go inside,

and there's just cleaning
supplies all over the garage.

It smelled really strongly
of ammonia in there.

[Sutton]
When the investigators began

the actual search
of the residence,

they found
signs of violence...

...including a door that was
actually broken down.

They found blood spatters
and smears on the door.

[Kohlmeier] They made
it a crime scene,

and Kelsey Turner was missing.

[Madison] Kelsey Turner
is a stunning blonde

who appeared
on the Playboy Italiawebsite

on May 10th, 2017.

Kelsey looked like
aPlayboy Bunny.

She looked like what
you would think of as, like,

the typical playmate
with the long platinum
blond hair

and the voluptuous body.

Kelsey Turner was originally
from Jonesboro, Arkansas.

[Newberg] She went
to Arkansas State University,

and she majored in Sports
Medicine and Exercise.

Uh, she also had experience
doing freelance modeling.

A lot of swimsuit modeling.

She moved
to California in 2014

to pursue a modeling career.

[Talon Reid] I met Kelsey
through mutual friends

just out at one
of my shows in LA.

I run a lot of events.

Seven nights a week.

She would always hit me up,

and I would set up a whole
night full of activities

for, you know,
her and her girlfriends.

She would get her
group of girls together,

and I would host
them for the night,

and make sure that they all
get taken care of in the club.

[Barghouty] Kelsey was going
for a very specific vibe.

She's always glammed up.

She was trying
to show this persona

of somebody that is fun

and living this
party-girl lifestyle.

Kelsey was the premier
party girl for our scene

and for what they
expect us to have

out at the clubs for,
you know, for the shows.

You know, your blond hair,
light eyes,

uh, one-piece
stretched short skirt,

high heels, you know, um...

...skinny model chicks.
[chuckling]

That's really what they
like to see at the club.

You know, it's, like,
the Hollywood nightlife chase.

[Madison] Kelsey had done
lots of modeling work,

but she was finally
starting to break through.

[Barghouty] From early on,
Kelsey is posing in lingerie
and swimsuits.

She even does a couple
of low-budget films.

Watch it, a*s[bleep]!

[Barghouty] She's really
trying to pursue this
modeling thing full-time.

[Madison] So, Kelsey was
getting regular modeling work.

Not just online, but she was
also a published model.

She had been in Maxim
and several other
different publications.

But it was Kelsey's dream
to be aPlayboy centerfold.

When you can attach
the Playboyname to yourself,

that could have been
a big door opening for Kelsey

because so many people
would have seen her photos,

and she was on the right
track to that.

So, Kelsey is this
aspirational model,

she's trying to get more
lingerie and swimsuit work,

and in May of 2017,

her dreams come true
when she's chosen

to appear inPlayboy Italia.

[Madison] Playboy
was a huge brand

with so many
international editions,

and one of the most
recognizable brand names
in the world.

Posing for a foreign
edition ofPlayboy

could definitely get
you in the door

to becoming a centerfold.

This is a big break
for Kelsey.

Being featured
on Playboy Italia

is a little bit
like being featured

as, say, a Playboy
Cyber Girl here in the States.

You're on the website,

you're photographed
beautifully,

you're portrayed as, like,
this beautiful, sexy woman.

[Barghouty] Kelsey was quoted
inPlayboy Italia, saying,

"I love thrills and fun,

I'm living my life fully aware
that I only have one."

[Madison] She was doing
everything right.

She was on the right track.

Playboy Italiacould have been
a big door opening for her

because so many people
would have seen her photos.

[Newberg] In December of 2018,

Kelsey moved to Vegas
from California.

[Meghan Sacks]
She moved to Las Vegas
to pursue her dreams.

Further her modeling career.

But she also began working
for a party promoter.

Playboywas the perfect brand
for Las Vegas in many ways

just because,
you know, it's Sin City,

everybody wants to party here.

You know, you think, "Sexy"
when you think of Las Vegas.

It's definitely a place
where Kelsey could come,

and possibly make some inroads
into the Playboyworld.

[Newberg] Kelsey moved
into this house in December
of 2018,

living with Diana Pena,

and Diana cleans
in exchange for free rent.

Diana Pena works
as a bartender in a casino.

[Newberg] And then,
in February,

Kelsey ends up dating
Jon Kennison,

and Jon moves
in pretty immediately.

So, all three of them
are living

in the upstairs floors
of this house together.

[Madison] Kelsey
was a party promoter.

She would try
and bring people in,

and bring business
into hotel casinos
and nightclubs.

She starts spending nights
at some of the city's
hottest clubs,

hanging out with some
of the most exclusive guests.

[Madison] She was
deep into the lifestyle

where you're hustling 24/7,

and just always putting
forward this image
of yourself.

She would often be
hired as a model

to host different events.

Whether it be nightclub
events, charity events,

and she would be
considered the feature draw.

Like, it would be her
photo on the flyer.

And being considered
aPlayboy model,

that was the draw, that was
why people would hire her,

thinking it would bring
people to the nightclubs.

The girls that I have had
relationships with that
work at Playboy

love being a part
of that community.

They like the limelight,
they like the attention,

and they're catered
to everywhere they go,

so, it's like, "What's not
to like about it?"

Anything you can
imagine anywhere else,

multiply it by, like, 100,
and there's Vegas.

People who go to Vegas,
it's another level.

It's like that emoji
with the brain exploding.

That's Vegas.

[police siren in background]

There is a lot of violent
crime here in Las Vegas

of the whole gamut.

m*rder, sexual as*ault,

armed robbery,
aggravated as*ault,

uh, you know,
batteries with weapons.

[Madison] Playboy
and Las Vegas definitely
have that in common,

where there's a lot
of glamor on the outside.

Girls like Kelsey can
definitely get caught
up in this lifestyle.

But there can also be
a lot of dark secrets.

[police dispatch]
911 operator,
what's your emergency?

[Newberg] It was
9:30 a.m. on March 7th,

was when the 911-call came in.

Somebody who was out driving

near the Lake Mead
National Recreation Center

had seen this car
on the side of the road

with a busted window,

and they thought
it was suspicious.

[Barghouty] It's this new car
in the middle of the desert.

And if you've ever driven
down a desert highway,

you know that you don't see
things for miles and miles.

So, the fact that this car
was just sitting there

sort of on the side
of the road was
really peculiar.

[Newberg] Once police
get there, they try
to open the door,

and they just notice
the smell from it.

There's latex gloves
on the front seat,

and there's blood all over
the back seat of the car.

[Sutton] They looked
in the vehicle,
they checked the trunk,

and when they
checked the trunk,

they made a very,
very grim discovery.

[Newberg] In the trunk,
they find blue and white
striped towels...

...and a human body.

[Kohlmeier] So, when officers
arrive at the scene,

the first thing they
notice about this car

was the windows lowered down,

which is not normal
for anyone leaving a vehicle,

even by the side of the road
if you were hiking.

They then notice
blood on the seats.

So, the officers
definitely felt

that something was
unusual and suspicious.

As they're doing some
search in the vehicle,

they open up the trunk,

and inside the trunk they
find some different items

where it looked like clothing.

They actually didn't
see the body at first.

It took a little bit to work
through some of the clothes

to actually uncover that there
was a body inside the trunk.

If there's no identification
on a body,

we try to check
on the registered owner.

[Sutton] That is somebody
that they have to look at

as a person of interest
in the homicide investigation.

Because what is this dead body

doing in this car?

[Kohlmeier]
At that time, when they
run the license plate,

it does come back to a person
out of San Francisco.

[Sutton] When police contacted
the registered owner,

he explained that he had
actually sold the car

to a buyer that he had
met on Craigslist...

...Kelsey Turner.

This guy said that he had
made an arrangement
with Kelsey

whereas Kelsey was gonna
make monthly payments
on the car

until they could transfer
the car to her name.

[Sacks] So, technically,
he was listed as the owner,

but the real occupant

or the real everyday
user of that car

was Kelsey Turner.

I think it was definitely
a little bit suspicious,

but the registered owner
was in China

at the time of the m*rder.

And he did have
paperwork to show

he was actually, like,
subleasing that car

to a Kelsey Turner,

so, that cleared him of being
involved in the m*rder.

When the coroner started
the investigation and looking
at the body,

they noticed blood
trauma to the head.

[Newberg] There were
defensive wounds on the arm,

and the teeth were
knocked out as well.

[Sacks] Despite
the brutal injuries,

investigators are eventually
able to identify the victim

because multiple credit cards
were found at the crime scene.

Police are able
to identify the victim

as 71-year-old
Dr. Thomas Burchard.

He's a child psychiatrist
based in Salinas, California,

visiting Las Vegas.

Dr. Burchard works at
some of the country's most
prestigious hospitals.

He works at Cincinnati
Children's Hospital,

Mass General, UCLA.

Eventually, he goes on to work
at the community hospital

of the Monterey Peninsula
in California.

He's very popular at his work.

They even give him
the nickname "Santa"

because he looks
like Santa Claus.

[Sutton] Once the victim
was identified,

the detectives
were quick to learn

that for three solid days,

the police had been trying
to locate Dr. Burchard,

and determine about
his wellbeing.

Dr. Burchard came to Vegas
on March 1st of 2019,

and March 2nd was the last
day that his partner, Judy,

had received a text
message from him,

and it said something
along the lines of,

"I'm excited to come home."

But at a certain point,
Thomas's phone is
completely turned off,

and she calls him,

and other people
had tried calling,

but he's just no answering.

She had a feeling
that something was wrong,

and she had been
calling law enforcement

to try to figure out why he
wasn't answering his phone.

Judy mentions to the police

that she thinks he might
have been with a woman
named Kelsey Turner.

We don't know exactly how
Dr. Burchard met Kelsey,

but at one point
in California,

they were living
in the same small town.

As detectives were conducting
their investigation,

information from Judy
led them to believe

that Thomas Burchard
would find women

that were good looking women,
and try to befriend them.

[Sacks] Dr. Burchard was
particularly known
for helping young women

who were hard on their times.

He would kind of come
in and be their savior
as it were.

He liked to help.

He kind of liked the hero
complex, Judy would say
later on.

[Madison] Judy thought
of Dr. Burchard's relationship

with these women
almost like charity.

Like he was trying to help
women who needed assistance.

Whether it was a case of love

or relationships
or just a friendship,

information from Judy
led to believe

that he was giving
money to Kelsey.

[Sacks] Kelsey's been featured
in different magazines,

she's very active on Instagram
as a swimsuit model,

and she has developed
into that persona...

...but she's also
struggling to pay her bills.

In California,
Thomas had been paying

for Kelsey's rent,

and he had been
paying her bills.

Their relationship worked out
well because Kelsey was
living with her mother

in California where she
recently lost her job.

Dr. Burchard was financially
supporting Kelsey and her
family.

He would pay for her
and her mother's expenses.

Their rent, Kelsey's car,

and pretty much
anything they needed.

[Sacks] He had been
subsidizing her lifestyle
for a long time.

Judy told the police that
Thomas had already spent

over $300,000
on Kelsey Turner.

[Madison] After Kelsey
moved to Las Vegas,

Dr. Burchard kept
paying her rent,

and was sending
her money weekly.

He doesn't want her out
on the street or having
a hard time.

That seems like a really
generous thing
for Dr. Burchard to do,

but things like that
can get complicated.

Sometimes in relationships
like that,

there's all kinds
of expectations on either side

that go unspoken,

which can lead to all
kinds of disagreements

and conflict further
down the road.

Judy was pretty forthcoming...

...but she never really
elaborated what the nature
of the relationships were.

If I had to guess, I'd say
there was something that
happened

of a sexual nature.

It could also just be
sexual innuendo

that Kelsey had
presented or...

and maybe possibly,
you know, led him to believe.

[Kohlmeier]
And Judy felt endangered
by the relationship...

...and Judy definitely
was nervous, upset...

...and maybe somewhat
jealous of the situation,

especially a much
younger woman

who's a model
and very attractive.

There was a moment
where Judy was very clear.

She gave a bottom line.

She wanted Thomas
to stop supporting Kelsey.

[Madison] Even if this was
a transactional relationship,

that doesn't mean that he
didn't necessarily care
for Kelsey

or want to make sure
she was okay.

Those things aren't
mutually exclusive.

[Barghouty] So, Dr. Burchard
traveled to Las Vegas

to see how Kelsey
was spending his money,

what the situation was,

to see if she was
telling the truth about
how she was living,

and what she was using it for,

and to potentially stop
funding her lifestyle.

[Kohlmeier]
So, as the investigation
continued,

police realized that there
were several calls that came
in for welfare checks.

to check on Thomas Burchard.

[Sacks] And they're able
to trace his location

to the residence where Kelsey
and her roommates lived.

His phone revealed
that he was there

on March 1st and March 2nd.

But after that, on March 3rd,

his phone is turned off
and no location can be found.

[Newberg] Police do
welfare checks

on March 3rd, 4th and 5th
at Kelsey's house.

This was a house where
there was always somebody
at home,

but it looked like
this house had been vacated,

and then everyone had
mysteriously vanished.

On March 8th,
police eventually are able
to get a search warrant

for Kelsey's home.

[Kohlmeier] Neighbors feel
something's wrong,

and they're also suspicious
for the fact that

it's been several days,
and there's no major
activity at the home.

Even with getting
information from Judy,

doesn't mean that
Kelsey herself

could not be in danger.

In the middle of the floor,
investigators find two piles
of laundry,

and the towels in one
of those piles of laundry

matches the ones
that were found

with Dr. Burchard's body
in the trunk of the car.

They immediately notice these
towels have blood stains.

[Kohlmeier] Also, there were
various fingerprints

that were located in the car.

So, of course, crime scene lab
will actually take all those
fingerprints

to identify
who the fingerprints were.

[Newberg] And they find record

of Kelsey's roommate
Diana's fingerprints
in the car,

and her boyfriend
Jon's fingerprints
are in there as well.

In Las Vegas, it's very common
to be fingerprinted

for many different jobs.

Diana Pena worked
at a local casino,

so, her fingerprints
were on file

because she would have had
to get that done to work
at the casino.

[Sacks] Jon Kennison
had a few drug offenses
on his record,

and he had been fingerprinted
at his last arrest.

At this point, investigators
can't be sure if Kelsey's
a victim.

They can't be sure
if any of the other
roommates are a victim.

They have two crime scenes...

...and everyone is missing.

[Kohlmeier] There was
no major reason to clean up...

...they weren't
vacating of house...

...so some type of altercation
and clean-up took place.

That's why
the clean-up material

was definitely very suspicious
to Las Vegas Metro Police.

[Sutton] So, detectives
interviewed the landlord
of the property,

and the landlord
explained to them

that Dr. Burchard

was actually the one
who paid the rent

on the residence

even though Kelsey Turner
was the occupant
of the residence.

And the lease was
actually going to expire

later on in the year
during 2019.

What it looks like is someone
committed a violent crime.

Probably the m*rder
of Thomas Burchard,

and they're now
fleeing the scene.

[Sutton] But just
because there's one victim,

doesn't mean there's
not another.

[Kohlmeier] When they were
conducting the search warrant,

they also did attempt
to trace and tap the phone

that Kelsey had to find out
the areas that she was at

over the last few days
or where possibly she was.

[Sutton] Investigators
looked deeply

into Kelsey Turner's
phone records.

They found that she
had utilized the phone,

and she was in the area
of the home from the 1st
to the 5th...

...but after the 6th...

...nada.

There was nothing.

On March 7th, the records show
that Kelsey's phone had been
turned off.

[Kohlmeier] This definitely
seemed suspicious.

We just didn't really
know at the time,

was she a suspect or was
she a victim and kidnapped?

You just don't wanna say,

"Oh, I think Kelsey
m*rder*d someone"

just because a family
member or a friend

or a partner of Thomas's says,
"He's in danger."

[Sacks] However, as Judy began
to encourage him to pull back,

Kelsey began threatening
to call professional
associations,

threatening to report Thomas
for unsavory behavior,

and so, as that
began to happen,

he was scared.

So, Thomas kept
on supporting Kelsey

against Judy's advice.

[Sutton] So, they were gonna
be checking the records

of the doctor's phone as well.

And there were calls made,

and the phone had
been utilized

up until March 3rd.

And then, after March 3rd,
there was nothing.

[Sacks] The last time Judy
heard from Thomas Burchard

was when they exchanged texts,

and when he expressed
that he was excited

to finish his business
and come home.

But here's where
it gets really interesting.

Dr. Burchard's phone was
actually in the possession...

...of the Las Vegas
Metropolitan Police
Department.

The phone had been
impounded prior to this.

On March 6th,
one of Thomas's friends

is trying to reach Thomas,

and he calls him, and this
guy named Jonny picks up.

[Kohlmeier] So, the friend
speaks to Jonny,

"Please take that phone
and bring it to the police
station."

Which, to me, I am shocked

that this guy actually went
into the police officers,

the impound, whether it was
for safekeeping at the time

or for investigative purposes.

[Newberg] So, the police
have the phone now.

On March 12th, this is after
Thomas's body has already
been found,

detectives track down Jonny,

and they go and meet with him,

it's a male detective
and a female detective.

So, this man said that
he just found the phone
lying around.

And suddenly Jonny...

...he actually confesses
to involvement

in Dr. Burchard's m*rder.

Jonny turns out to be
a transient guy around town.

The Las Vegas Metro Police
detectives locate Jonny

who found the phone
that was either lost

or thrown out of a window
or who knows what.

[Sacks] Well, look,
detectives, if they
immediately find a man

who's in possession
of a phone of a victim,

and he confesses,
they probably thought
he was involved.

And detectives have a really
combative interview with him.

He's yelling at them.

He was not being
friendly in general,

which led the police
to believe that maybe
he had information.

At one point, Jonny threatens
to eat the male detective's
soul...

...and he tries to attack
a female detective.

He had some mental issues
and emotional issues

that caused him to want to,

uh, let's say, uh...

...talk about his involvement
when it actually didn't
happen.

[Sacks] After taking some
time to observe him
and question him,

they realized that he
was a false confessor.

They were able to determine
that he had nothing to do
with this crime,

and that he was
very unstable, unfortunately.

But it was this phone that
gave them new evidence

to be able to trace
Dr. Burchard's steps.

To be able to trace
his last known movement.

They're also able to look
at Thomas Burchard's
phone records,

and they're able
to trace his location

to the residence where Kelsey
and her roommates live.

His phone revealed that
he was there on March 1st
and March 2nd.

After that, on March 3rd,
his phone is turned off,

and his whereabouts
are unknown.

So, with all this
evidence piling up,

it's been nearly a week
since Thomas's body
has been found,

the police don't know where
Kelsey is, but they're
actively looking for her.

[Kohlmeier] At this point
in time, has she been
kidnapped,

is she in danger
or was she involved

in the m*rder
of Thomas Burchard?

On the 21st March,

the case took
a very interesting turn.

The Rio Hotel in Las Vegas,

security contacted
the Metro Police

to let them know that they
had some personal items

that they believe that
the police might have
an interest in.

[Kohlmeier]
Most security works well

with the local police
department in Las Vegas...

...and they always
have a conversation,

and they're always
sharing information.

[Newberg]
And with casinos out here,

it's pretty common that people
leave stuff in your room,

so, the Rio had
collected these bags of...

...of articles and items
from somebody

who had stayed at
the hotel and just
abandoned.

From the Rio lost and found,

police find medication bottles
belonging to Diana Pena.

They find some documents,
they find this little black
book

with Thomas's handwriting
in it that had his bank
account information.

And they also find Kelsey
Turner's driver's license.

It was just so much evidence

in regards to the situation
in the car

and fingerprints and blood
in different locations
in the home.

Judy had a bad feeling
about Kelsey Turner,

and she had asked Dr. Burchard
to end that relationship

and to stop sending her money.

Judy tells investigators

that Kelsey had been
extorting Dr. Burchard.

That she had threatened
to spread rumors

that could end his career,

and that she was taking
advantage of Dr. Burchard's

kindness and generosity.

Judy was growing more
concerned about Dr. Burchard.

She saw his mental
health declining.

He had signs of possible
early dementia,

and she really felt that
he was being taken advantage
of by Kelsey.

She wanted him
to cut Kelsey off.

She felt that Kelsey was
trying to take him for every
penny he had.

But there was no way
Kelsey was letting this go.

[Sutton] With all
of the evidence that
had mounted up...

...that Kelsey Turner
was involved in this crime,

this became critical
information.

Investigators know
they have one victim...

...and Kelsey Turner has
disappeared at this point.

So, on the 21st of March...

...the Metropolitan Police
actually submitted
for an arrest warrant

for Kelsey Turner.

[Barghouty] There were
so many questions.

Why were they on the run?

If there's no wrongdoing here,

why would you keep
trying to escape?

It's been radio silence.

Nobody knows what
happened to Kelsey,

no one knows where she is.

The Metropolitan Police
Department detectives
went to a judge,

and had arrest warrants issued

for conspiracy
to commit m*rder

for Diana Pena...

...and Kelsey Turner's
boyfriend, Jon Kennison.

On April 12th, Diana Pena
gets with her criminal
defense attorney,

and she turns herself in.

[Newberg]
She immediately tells police

it was Kelsey and Kelsey's
boyfriend, Jon,

who were responsible
for Dr. Burchard's m*rder.

[Sutton] Diana is employed
at a local casino.

On March 3rd,

the doctor and Kelsey had
arrived to pick her up.

So, Kelsey has Dr. Burchard's
phone in her hand,

she's looking at the GPS
to try to figure out
their way back home.

[Newberg] Diana says
that as they're driving,

Kelsey is looking
through Thomas's phone.

She starts to get angry,

and then it starts to get
pretty heated in the car,

and they're, like,
yelling at each other.

[Sutton] The argument
became actually physical

between Turner and the doctor

to the point where Diana
had to intervene,

and try and calm
this situation down

and take control of it
so that they could get home.

Diana was saying that there
were pornographic photos
on Thomas's phone.

This sends Kelsey reeling.

She's extremely upset.

[Sutton] Kelsey Turner
somehow discovered

that there were
nude photographs

and sexually explicit
text messages

between the doctor

and Kelsey's mother.

[Sacks] Thomas knew
Kelsey's mother

because the previous apartment
he had rented for Kelsey

in Salinas, California,

she resided there
with her mother.

But Kelsey didn't see
this as a good reason

for the two to be
exchanging messages.

[Barghouty] So, they get
back to the house,

and Kelsey keeps getting
madder and madder,

and, at this point,
Dr. Burchard keeps telling her

that she needs to cool off,

and that they can keep
talking about it

once she's had a second
to sort of gather herself.

But Kelsey just keeps
getting more and more angry.

[Madison] Kelsey discovered
that Dr. Burchard

was exchanging explicit
photos with her mother,

and she threatened
to expose him

if he didn't continue
to bankroll her.

[Barghouty] She's going
to blackmail him,

and try to get him fired
from his job or even worse

by accusing him of some
sort of wrongdoing.

[Madison] I think Kelsey
thought she was
on to a good thing,

and was going to hang
on to it any way she could.

[Sutton]
The argument continues,

and Kelsey is
haranguing the doctor,

and the doctor is saying,
"I don't want any part
of this anymore,"

and Kelsey Turner tells him

to go upstairs while
she calms down,

but she continues
to go up there

to where the doctor is
to attack him verbally,

and this continues to escalate

into even more argument.

So, Kelsey, during this
heated argument,

basically extorts him
to give her

his bank account information

so that she can get
money from him

as a way of payment

for not making a report
to the authorities.

[Sacks] And this
infuriates Thomas

who then goes into the room
and slams the door behind him.

[Newberg] At this point,
Kelsey's boyfriend, Jon,

starts to get involved
in the argument.

Diana tells police that
Jon runs upstairs

to where Thomas
had closed the door

and tried to lock
himself in this room.

And Diana says that Jon

is armed
with a baseball bat...

...and is trying
to break down the door.

Diana sees Jon
go into the room
with the baseball bat.

Diana says that,
at that point,

Dr. Burchard was
clearly injured,

his eye sort
of black and blue.

[Newberg] There's a large
bruise on Dr. Burchard's head,

and that he's
clearly disoriented.

So, he starts to say that,

like, "I need to go
to the hospital."

[Barghouty] Diana told
investigators at this point

that everybody agreed
they were gonna
go to the hospital

so, Dr. Burchard gets
into the car.

[Newberg] He's still
bleeding at this point,

he saying he wants
to go to the hospital,

but he's telling Kelsey
and Diana and Jon like,

"Look, I can say
that I was mugged

so that you guys
don't get in trouble.

I can just say that
I was mugged. It's fine."

So, Diana at this point

is thinking that she
is going to drive him
to the hospital.

Kelsey and Jon end up going
back inside the house.

As Kelsey and Jon
are inside the house,

Diana said that she is
talking to Thomas.

At that time,
Thomas tells Diana,

"Look, I think that
Kelsey's gonna k*ll me."

Diana is scared because she
doesn't know what's gonna
happen to her

after she just witnessed
a traumatic event

of this person being severely
hurt or even k*lled.

[Barghouty] Diana says
at this point that Kelsey
tells her

they need to clean
up the house first

'cause it's in such bad shape.

So, Diana goes
back into the house
and starts cleaning.

[Sutton] So, Diana was
inside the house...

...and she hears that

the violence is
continuing in the car.

So, she goes down to try
and quell that.

[Kohlmeier]
Diana overhears Kelsey say,

"Hey, Thomas is a b*tch,

you need to knock him out."

Diana tries to go
back out to the garage

to see what's happening.

Kelsey meets her halfway
and says, "It's too late."

Jon comes out of the garage...

...there's blood all
over his arms,

all over his hands,
there's some splatted
on his face.

And then Diana says...

"...You guys have
just ruined our lives."

[Sacks] That night,
Kelsey, Jon, and Diana

decided that they
had to leave the residence.

So, the three of them left,
and headed for the Rio Hotel

where they spent the night.

At one point,
Diana says Jon leaves,

and he says, "I need
to get rid of Thomas's phone."

They end up staying at
the Rio for at least two days,

and it's at this point
that they start to get

notifications on their phone
that the body has been found.

They're seeing news reports.

[Sutton] The next day,
Kennison and Kelsey

grab Diana and say,
"We gotta go right now,

we gotta get
out of this hotel."

They all just leave without
taking any of their stuff,

and they get in a taxi,
and they go.

[Sutton]
Over the next few days,

they bounced around
from small motels

to friends' houses,

and, eventually,
a few days later,

Kelsey got a ride out of town.

[Kohlmeier] Las Vegas
Metro Police received a tip

stating that Kelsey Turner
was in Stockton, California.

The FBI goes out to Stockton,

and they locate Kelsey Turner,

and she was arrested

for the m*rder
of Thomas Burchard.

A Playboymodel
has been arrested

in the case
of a California psychiatrist

who was m*rder*d
in Las Vegas earlier
this month.

Police arrested 25-year-old
Kelsey Turner

for the death
of Dr. Thomas Burchard.

[Sacks] When Kelsey's
brought in,

she points the finger
at roommate, Diana Pena,

and says that she
and Jon had nothing to do

with the m*rder
of Thomas Burchard.

Kelsey claimed Diana
was just a snitch,

and that she had
everything to gain,

and, uh, she was the one

that committed this
very violent crime...

...because Diana, basically,
snapped when she learned

that the doctor wasn't
going to pay the rent anymore

and that she couldn't
deal with that,

and that was her motivation
for k*lling the doctor.

[Newberg] So, Jon's
arrested in April,

and, at this point,
all three of them are
in custody.

Jon's attorneys argue

that even though
Jon was the one

who might have
wielded the baseball bat,

it was Kelsey's cries
of bloodlust,

and her anger at Thomas

was the reason
why he was k*lled.

[Sacks] After Diana
cooperated with the police,

she worked out a plea deal.

And the agreement was that
she would plead guilty

to accessory to m*rder,

and she would
receive probation.

[Sutton] In June of 2022,

Kennison plead guilty
to second degree m*rder

and conspiracy to commit
m*rder with a sentence

of 18 years to 45 years
in a state prison.

In November of 2022,

Kelsey took a different
kind of plea...

...called an Alford plea.

It is, basically,

"I'm not gonna say
I did it and I'm guilty,

but I will say that
the state has enough
evidence to convict me,

and I know that
I'm going to prison."

Ms. Turner, in accordance
to the laws of the state
of Nevada,

you hereby are judged
guilty of second degree
m*rder, a felony,

you hereby are sentenced
to 10 to 25 years

in the Nevada Department
of Corrections.

[Kelsey] Thank you,
your honor.

[judge]
This court's adjourned.

[officer] Court is adjourned.

[Sacks] In the end, Judy Earp,

who had warned
Thomas for so long,

found some type
of dark validation

with the sentences
of Kelsey and Jon.

[Sutton] This was
a crime of passion.

The people who did it were
absolutely morally bankrupt.

This was a very violent action

that was perpetrated
against an old man.

Cruel, horrible.

[Kohlmeier] There was just
emotional domestic violence

that took place here
on an extreme level,

and as stress and anxiety
come into play,

it leads to the complete mess
that you have with the m*rder
case.

[Reid] I was definitely
surprised to know

that someone I know
was capable of...

...that kind of, like,
you know, cruelty, but...

...you know,
it's a crazy world.

[Madison] Las Vegas
andPlayboy are both
very glittery,

flashy, glamorous things,

but there can also be
a lot of dark secrets,

and they both try
and keep them hidden.

Things could have been
really different for Kelsey,

but it took a darker turn.

She had become
accustom to the lifestyle

that Dr. Burchard's money
was providing,

and she wasn't gonna
say goodbye to that.

This is a horrible story

about someone trying
to help someone else

and it going terribly wrong.

They say the love of money
can be the root of all evil

because people can just
get so caught up

that everything else
falls to the waste side,

and it turns into the ultimate
worst-case scenario.
