- [dance music playing loudly]

- [clamoring]

[men laughing outside]

- [distorted voices]

- [laughter echoes]

[man speaks indistinctly]

[loud gasp]

- [music cuts out]

- [fire crackling]

- [crickets chirping]

- [Socks purring softly]

[unsettling music rises]

Wake up! Wake up!

Get your brother! Go downstairs! Now!

[thunder rumbles, fades]

[Judy] Watch out!

Watch out! Álex! Watch out!

[thud]

[crickets chirping]

[footsteps approaching]

- [Judy] Are they asleep now?

- [Álex exhales]

Yeah. It took 'em a while.

You scared them quite a bit.

Yeah.

[sighs]

Listen.

What did you mean earlier

when you said you were dead once?

What you saw about me

is something that really happened.

- [sighs]

- I don't get it.

What I mean is

I was dead, just like you described it.

THE LAST NIGHT AT TREMORE BEACH

[crickets chirping]

EPISODE 4

FOR JUDY

[Judy] I don't even know where to start.

It happened a long time ago, and I

If you hadn't told me what you saw,

I would have probably never told you.

[sighs] My nightmares started

after a real nightmare.

[bells tolling]

[gentle music playing]

[Judy] Eight years ago,

I was looking forward

to taking the world by storm.

I wanted to enjoy life

and just meet people.

[indistinct chatter in French]

[Judy] And I chose to do that,

in Toulouse.

- [woman] Good morning.

- [Judy] Morning.

Are you Judy?

- Yes.

- Okay, these are your keys.

Your apartment is over there.

[Judy] I've never been afraid

to start over.

- Very good.

- Bye.

- Bye, thank you.

- [Judy] I didn't before because of my mom.

We really only had one another.

She raised me on her own.

[gentle music continues]

She died of cancer

a month before I moved to Toulouse.

She was sick for half her life.

I probably became a nurse because of her.

[monitor beeping]

It's perfect.

[Judy] I learned that life

and death always go hand in hand.

And being aware of how short life

can be made me enjoy the little things.

The doctor says to the patient,

"Good morning, sir."

"I'm sorry,

but you don't have much time to live."

"No time to live?"

"May I do anything at all

in order to gain more time?"

"Yes. You can count slowly."

- [Judy] Is that it?

- [group laughs]

[upbeat French song playing]

- No, Miray! That's bad!

- Is it bad?

[Judy] Her name was Miray,

and she was my best friend in Toulouse.

[speaking indistinctly]

[softly] Try to order.

- [Judy] Should I do it?

- Yes.

[in French] Um, two

two croissants, please.

[Judy in English] She helped me

feel at home.

She was always there for me.

There are two guys right there.

Go ahead. They're right there.

- Stop that.

- [laughs]

[Judy] I left home looking

for other ways to live and feel.

- The wines from Rioja are the best for me.

- [Miray] Cheers to the wines of Rioja.

- Judy, where are you from, exactly?

- From Santander.

- I'm all out! I'm done! That's it!

- [Judy] Whoa!

[Judy] And little by little,

I started shaping my new world.

[Miray laughs] You lost too!

Want to see it?

[Miray] What? You won!

- [guys groan]

- [cheers]

- [chanting] The T-shirt!

- [guy 1] Okay. Here we go.

- [women laugh]

- [guy 2] Whoo-hoo!

[Judy] A world very different

from the one I'd grown up in.

Miray was one of those people that

[French song fades]

you should always have by your side.

[Miray] Oh, how I love this park!

- [birds singing]

- [Miray] Do you?

- Little pigeons! [kisses]

- [pigeons coo]

- We should have a picnic later.

- Here?

[Judy] We tried to

enjoy life to its fullest.

Which is something

we should all be trying to do.

- Oh, Mimi

- Mimi

[Judy] I was very happy in Toulouse.

Oh! This one looks so cool.

Oh, that place is amazing.

Oh! Until 4:00 a.m.?

That's promising. [chuckles]

Sounds like fun.

[Judy] Until this one night

changed everything.

- [dance music blasting]

- [excited chatter]

[women laughing]

[Miray] Thank you very much, my dear.

- Oh my God! This party's insane!

- [laughs]

[Judy] I want a drink!

[Miray] Oh, get ready my friend.

You're gonna love this.

[both laugh]

[guys] Drink, drink, drink, drink!

- Ugh, this sh*t is nasty.

- Come on, Judy. Let's have some fun.

[Judy] Miray, you're crazy.

I know, honey, but I love it. Mwah!

[both laugh]

[speaking indistinctly]

[Miray] Come on.

I feel like having a drink.

[guy cheers]

[Judy] There's so much, right?

[Miray] Oh my God, this rave is enormous!

[music building]

We won't be leaving till the morning,

I'm telling you!

[both laugh]

[energetic dance music continues]

[ravers cheering]

[both laugh]

[speaking indistinctly]

[Judy] We met these guys.

[music fades]

- I'll never forget their names.

- [dance music resumes]

- Alphonse.

- Claude.

- Kadir.

- Clément. My friends call me Clem.

Pierre.

[Judy] Pierre.

- [music fades]

- He said his name was Pierre.

He was the one I liked.

I liked him a lot.

- [Claude laughs]

- [Alphonse] Three, four, five. Five.

And what brings you guys

to the party tonight?

Oh, for what reason? I question that too.

[laughing]

'Cause our little wolf here

is getting older.

He just turned 26.

- Oh, who's a big boy now?

- [guys laugh]

[guys] Happy birthday to you! ♪

[Judy] They were doing a road trip

in their trailer.

- It was some kind of tradition.

- [music dies down]

Pierre, he looked at me, and he said

"Do you wanna come dance?"

[dance music thumping]

[group cheers]

[Judy laughs]

[Pierre] Should we continue

somewhere else?

Yes.

[Judy] I had shut myself off

from the world for a long time.

- [Alphonse] Hey, have fun!

- [Judy] So on that night, I broke free.

That night I danced.

- [music cuts out]

- We then began to to kiss.

[takes a deep breath]

[electronic music continues]

- [music fades]

- [fire crackling]

[takes a deep breath]

Miray made out

with a guy she had met on the dance floor.

And he invited her over to his place

Before leaving, she asked me

if I wanted them to give me a ride.

[Miray laughs]

Excuse me?

Miray [laughs]

Should we drive you home?

[music fades out]

I said something to Miray that

that I won't forget ever in my life.

[muffled dance music playing]

"I will regret this tomorrow."

[echoing] I will regret this tomorrow.

Ha! We only live once. Right, baby?

[sniffles]

Okay. I'll see you tomorrow

at the hospital?

- Yes.

- [both laugh]

- [music fades]

- And then she left.

- [electronic music continues]

- [excited chatter]

[Judy] And then Pierre got closer,

and he whispered to me.

Shall we continue this somewhere else?

Shall we?

- Yeah?

- Yeah, okay. [laughs]

- [both laugh]

- Come on.

[Judy] We explored

every corner of the house.

- [music fades out]

- Until we got to the

[sighs softly]

the basement.

- [Pierre breathing heavily]

- [Judy laughs]

[dance music continues]

[Judy laughs]

[Pierre laughs]

[music grows unsettling]

[Judy] Hold on, hold on.

The door.

- I'll go shut it.

- Quick, quick, quick.

[dance music continues faintly]

He knew perfectly well

what he was doing to me.

And I liked all of it.

[both panting]

I love kissing you.

I'm loving this.

[kissing]

- [Judy grunts]

- [both laugh]

- [Judy moaning]

- [Pierre breathing heavily]

[kissing]

[Judy laughs]

[both laugh]

[zipper opens]

Hold on, hold on.

What? Would you rather go to the trailer?

No. Do you have a condom?

[sniffles]

[sighs] I just was feeling so free.

All I wanted was [sniffles]

to have fun with him.

[dance music continues faintly]

[both breathing heavily]

- [moans]

- Oh, you're so beautiful.

[Pierre groans]

[Pierre moans]

[both panting]

[Judy, softly] f*ck.

[both moaning]

[kissing]

[both moaning]

[Pierre] f*ck. f*ck.

[Pierre exhales]

[high-pitched ringing]

That's when I saw it.

[Pierre moaning] I'm coming. I'm coming.

I'm coming.

- [Judy] What are you doing?

- [Pierre panting]

- What's up?

- Were you filming?

- Were you filming me?

- I didn't film you.

- What's wrong with you?

- I didn't film. I didn't record.

- You did film me.

- I didn't press record!

- Give me the phone!

- Want the phone?

- Give me the phone!

- Hey!

- Do you want the phone?

- Yes.

Ask for it politely.

[scoffs]

- Do you want the phone?

- Yes.

- Do you want the phone?

- Yes!

You want the phone? Here. Take it.

Go on. Take it.

- Now get the f*ck out.

- as*h*le.

What did you say?

- You b*tch.

- as*h*le.

You b*tch!

[electronic music continues]

Go and f*ck off, now!

- Dickhead.

- Just take your bag and get out!

Get out! Get out of here!

- Hey! What's going on here?

- Hey!

[music fades]

[exhales shakily]

[Clem] Don't tell me

you've already finished.

[Kadir] Stick around.

[Pierre] She wants

to leave the job half done.

- [group laughs]

- No. Where are your manners? Come on.

You need to finish what you start.

Don't leave things half-done here.

Huh?

[Clem] Don't let her go.

[guys] Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

- Hey, what are you doing?

- Come on. Where are you going?

Let me leave.

Take it easy.

- Let me leave.

- No, no, no.

I wanted to leave that place

but didn't know how to do it.

- Don't worry. We're just gonna

- [screams]

- Hold her breath.

- Hey. What the hell?

I couldn't. It was it was impossible.

- [Judy screams]

- [guys speaking indistinctly]

[sobs]

[Pierre] Settle down!

- Hold still already!

- [laughs]

And one of them

suddenly pulled down his pants.

Come closer.

- [laughing]

- Hey, guys. I'm first, okay?

- I'm gonna go next.

- What are you doing?

[Judy] And, in that moment, Pierre

said something that gave me goosebumps.

[Judy's groans echo]

"Get in f*cking line. I was here first."

[muffled scream]

Shh. Quietly. Quietly, I said.

[hushes]

Hey! Quietly now. Quietly.

I told you to be quiet, yeah?

You're too loud, hey!

And right outside,

I heard some girls that were passing by.

- [girls speaking indistinctly]

- Shh, shh.

- [muffled scream]

- [hushes] You, go guard the door!

- What?

- Guard the f*cking door.

[speaking indistinctly]

I thought that they might

- [sighs]

- [girls speaking indistinctly]

Be quiet. Just stay quiet now.

- Uh no, the party is upstairs.

- [Pierre] Just shut up. Shut up.

[Pierre] Shh.

[door closes]

I'll do it slowly, okay? Super slowly

I'll be gentle. Don't worry.

[laughs]

Go ahead. Come on!

- Come on.

- Yeah!

- Amazing.

- Breathe. Just breathe.

[Alphonse] Do it, man.

I'm recording it. Do it!

Come on.

- Come on, man.

- [grunts]

[exhales shakily]

[muffled scream]

[muffled scream]

They all r*ped me, Álex.

They all r*ped me.

They all r*ped me. The five of them.

- [high-pitched ringing]

- [Pierre panting]

- [dance music continues faintly]

- [Pierre panting]

- [sniffles]

- [music cuts out]

[sighs shakily]

[sniffles]

[Judy gasps]

[Judy] When they were done,

they just left me there.

[Judy gasping]

[guys laughing]

[Judy] They started watching the videos

they had recorded with their phones.

[muffled laughter and chatter]

Did you see the face he made?

- Guys, I'll go get some drinks upstairs.

- You think I should be a director?

[Judy] I tried to grab mine

so I could call for help, but

[Judy gasps]

Pierre, he saw me.

[grunts]

- [Judy] And I was just so scared that

- [Judy strains, groans]

Hey, beautiful. What are you doing here

all by yourself, baby?

that I couldn't defend myself.

Hey, guys! Look who's up now.

Oh, yeah.

You woke up, my love?

Come on, now.

Join us. Come on, now.

[Alphonse laughs]

I think you're really beautiful.

Wait, how do you say that in Spanish?

- Yeah, you've just learned.

- Oh, she's so adorable, isn't she?

[laughing]

Go ahead, lie down.

You've earned it, baby.

- My little lizard.

- [laughing]

Pay attention. Hey, hey!

Look, look, look, look. Hey, hey!

- [Judy gasps]

- Oh, that's so disgusting.

There wasn't any water left,

so I brought some beers.

[Clem] Are you thirsty?

[Judy] I remember thinking

"This can't be happening."

[exhales]

- Were you sleeping, beautiful?

- [Judy gasps]

- [laughing]

- Ah, yeah!

[Judy] My vision started to go blurry,

and I passed out.

I have no clue how long I slept there.

[Judy sobs]

[Judy] When I woke up,

I thought it would finally be over.

Did you not see?

- Everybody upstairs is leaving the party.

- [laughing]

- [Alphonse laughs]

- [Kadir] You suck at this.

Hey.

Good morning, sleeping beauty.

Did you sleep well?

By the way, we're taking your phone.

Wait, guys. Hold on, hold on, hold on.

[somber music playing]

But just then

[Alphonse] Hold on, hold on, hold on.

[Judy gasps]

Well, here we are, just us.

The thing is,

I think I still have a hard-on. [laughs]

[Judy] One of them

decided that he wasn't finished.

Nobody

No one stopped him

from raping me again. No one.

[guys laughing]

I couldn't take it anymore.

[Judy groaning]

I couldn't take it anymore.

- [muffled chatter]

- [Judy sobbing]

[Judy] I grabbed a bottle

And and I hit that son of a b*tch.

[Judy grunts]

- [laughing]

- [bottle clatters]

[Pierre laughs]

[grunts weakly]

- [Judy strains]

- [thuds]

- Oh sh*t!

- [laughing]

- Whoa.

- Did you see that?

All of them just started laughing

until they realized he wasn't moving.

One hell of a blow, right?

Dude, he fell on his face.

- [guys continue laughing]

- [Alphonse] Did you see how hard he fell?

[laughs]

[laughter stops]

[birds singing outside]

Are you okay?

Go check if he's breathing.

[Judy exhales]

Hey, man.

[tense music swells]

f*ck, is he dead?

[Judy] I didn't want

something like that to happen.

- [Pierre] Oh my god.

- [Judy] But

He deserved it, though.

[crying softly]

I will

I'll feel the guilt

for the rest of my life.

[tense music continues]

- Hey, man. Come on.

- [Alphonse] Holy f*ck.

- Oh, sh*t.

- Hey, this isn't funny!

Hey, this is not funny!

- Hey, look at me!

- Clément?

Then they started

to get extremely nervous,

and no one knew what to do.

- [retches]

- [vomit splashes]

[sobs]

f*ck this!

[Judy groans]

[Pierre] You f*cking b*tch!

What are you doing?

I I'm calling an ambulance

If you call an ambulance,

we'll all go to jail. Then we're f*cked!

What should I do? He's dead now!

You'd better not say anything about this,

you b*tch!

It doesn't matter if she hears us.

When the bodies are found,

they'll know their names.

The police will catch us!

Look at me now!

Look at me. We are not f*cked!

Don't make him pay for it.

- Go upstairs and get rope and a knife.

- And where the f*ck do I find that?

- With that mess, it should be easy.

- Shh, shh.

Come on, move it! Move!

- [sobs]

- [Pierre] f*ck!

f*cking hell!

What the f*ck are we gonna do?

Be patient!

[Judy] The guy who went upstairs

came back with a knife and some rope.

Pierre was freaked out.

[sobbing]

- Her hands!

- No, no. No. No.

- Shh!

- [Judy] I tried to resist, but Pierre

would push me down.

And he said, "Stop."

[sighs]

"Stop moving or you'll make it worse."

[Pierre] Stop moving,

or you'll make it worse.

- No!

- [Pierre] Stop moving like that.

- No! No!

- [Pierre] I told you to stop moving!

God! You b*tch. f*cking b*tch!

Hold her hands.

[sniffles]

- [Judy groans]

- [Pierre panting]

You asked for it.

[tense music swells]

[Judy groans]

[music dies down]

[fades]

[Judy breathing shakily]

That's the image of me that you saw, Álex.

They left me there, after all of that.

They left me alone

in that [sniffles]that basement.

In front of that dead body.

They had left to get some food,

and when they got back,

Miray called me on my cell phone.

[cell phone vibrating]

- [Judy exhales]

- [footsteps approaching]

[cell phone beeps]

Your friend is worried about you.

Tell her your dad just died.

Or your mom, and that you'll call her.

[weakly] Yeah.

You give me the sign I'll hand it over.

[sighs] Miray won't believe it.

[breathing shakily]

She knows me too well.

I have no one left.

My entire life is here.

[Alphonse] So? What the f*ck do we do?

[Pierre] We'll stick to the plan.

Without leaving a note?

The only important things are the bodies.

If there are no bodies,

there's no crime.

We're gonna choose randomly.

Whoever gets the black ball.

[Kadir] Wait, Yannick.

I don't think it's a good idea.

[Pierre] Don't call me that, you idiot.

She's gonna hear it.

[Kadir] He's right. It's better

if we don't use our names.

[Alphonse] Come on.

Let's all pick a f*cking ball.

They planned on k*lling me

then burying me with their friend.

And they were choosing randomly.

[labored breathing]

[sobs]

[unsettling music playing]

[Judy gasping]

[shakily] Leave me. Leave me.

[breathing shakily]

I I'm begging you.

Don't k*ll me. I'm begging you.

[panting]

[Judy exhales]

[knife clatters]

[unsettling music building]

[groaning]

[choking]

[Pierre breathing shakily]

- [Pierre panting]

- [Judy choking]

[music stops abruptly]

[Judy]The brain's

main priority is always survival.

When you run out of air,

it goes into survival mode to save oxygen.

That's why you faint.

And my brain

turned off my body,

and they thought I was dead.

- But they were wrong.

- [gasps]

Those b*stards f*cked up.

[coughs weakly]

[tense music playing]

[Judy panting]

[moaning]

[sobs]

- [footsteps approaching]

- [Kadir] What do we do with her?

[Pierre] Find a reservoir.

Throw their bodies in.

[footsteps going upstairs]

[sobs]

[sobs]

[crying]

[glass cracking]

[cries out]

[screams in pain]

[sobbing]

[panting]

[breathing shakily]

[birds singing outside]

[strains]

[broken glass clinks]

[dogs barking in distance]

[tense music swells]

[nearby chatter]

- Yannick, what do we do?

- [Pierre] Don't say my name!

[Alphonse] What the hell do we do?

[Claude] We need to get out of here.

We need to get out now.

- [Pierre] Help.

- [Alphonse] Move!

Grab everything.

Do we have everything we need?

- [Pierre] How far away is the reservoir?

- [Alphonse] Two hours. The farthest one.

[tense music swells]

- [Alphonse] Louis.

- [Clause] Yeah?

[Alphonse] Come on, now.

Do you have the stuff for cleaning?

Let's clean everything up

and load the bodies.

[Pierre] Let's go.

Let's go, let's go!

[panting]

[dramatic music playing]

Help! Help me!

Help!

Help!

Help!

Help me!

Help me!

Help me!

Help! Help! [crying]

[dramatic music continues]

I thought the worst would be over

once they were arrested.

But they forced me

to relive it all over again.

You've no idea how many times.

I had to tell it,

with every single detail,

how each of them r*ped me.

Until the trial took place.

[man coughs]

[Pierre] I don't know what I'm doing here.

I'm not well, and I'm taking medication.

It's true that she didn't explicitly say

that she wanted to

but she'd been flirting

with the five of us all night.

[Kadir] From the moment she arrived,

she wouldn't stop

trying to turn us on.

Then she finally managed

to get with one of us.

And after that, she asked all of us

to join in and film the whole thing.

When she realized that that we had sent

the video to some friends,

she felt embarrassed.

She got really violent.

[hesitates] She wouldn't stop drinking.

Uh, she drank a lot

and smoked some joints and

[inhales deeply]

uh, she grabbed a bottle, and then, uh

She hit him really hard.

She was really angry.

That's the worst moment of my life.

I will never forget it.

Clément

[inhales shakily]

She She then took me to the basement.

[murmuring]

- [sniffles]

- [gavel bangs]

[murmuring dies down]

[Judy] The day they testified,

they r*ped me again.

In front of all those people.

[lawyer] Do you recognize this object?

[Judy] They had to prosecute four rapists

who had tried to k*ll me

and who wanted

to get rid of their dead friend,

but their defense

quickly turned it around.

Tell me, then. Do you recognize this?

Yes, I do.

[Judy] And they stopped

talking about the r*pe.

They talked more about whether I used

the bottle with homicidal intent

than about what they did.

So were you the one who hit him?

As claimed by the four witnesses present?

[hesitates] Ye Yes.

To stop him from raping me once more.

[Judy] The defense of those b*stards

succeeded in twisting

everyone's perception of me.

I felt like I was blamed

for defending myself.

For not being the perfect victim

that I was supposed to act like

to be deserving of justice.

[Miray] The jury believed you, Judy.

When you were telling what happened,

I could see it in their faces.

And what if that's not the case?

We can appeal if necessary.

And we'll win, Judy. I promise.

[unsettling music playing]

[indistinct chatter]

[unsettling music building]

[woman] In the name of

the nine members of the jury,

after deliberating and voting,

we declare the four defendants,

with six votes in favor and three against

culpable.

Guilty of the kidnapping

and g*ng raping of Judy Garmendia.

[gentle music playing]

[relieved laugh]

[sniffles]

Thank you.

[Judy] They were declared guilty.

But they destroyed my life.

[music grows unsettling]

[Bea] Dad!

Dad, Dad!

[music fades]

[Bea] Dad!

- Dad!

- [Álex] What's wrong?

It's Bruno. He's having one

of his weird moments again. Come.

- Quickly.

- [Álex] Where is he?

- Relax.

- [Bea] Let's go. Come on.

Come on.

[suspenseful music playing]

[urinating]

[Álex, softly] Bud.

Hey buddy.

[music fades]

Can you hear me? Hey.

Don't worry, okay? Papa's here. [kisses]

It's okay.

- What are you doing, Dad?

- [Álex] We shouldn't wake him up.

- [Bea] But he peed himself.

- I'll take care of it. Don't worry.

Mom and Niels never do it like that.

Well, I don't care how they do it.

- You're all crazy, all of you!

- You need to understand I'm your father.

Lower your voice.

[Bea] Whatever!

[somber music playing]

[breathing shakily]

[footsteps approaching]

You don't need to go.

[Bea] Are you gonna break up with him?

I don't know how you stand him.

I'm not like this because of him.

Are you sure?

I'm sure.

Come here.

[sighs]

Can I ask you something?

Sure.

What's wrong with my dad?

Are you still scared?

- [gentle piano music playing]

- Yeah.

[Judy] Me too.

Whatever he's going through,

I'll help him.

How?

[Judy] I won't leave him alone.

Don't worry.

And I won't stop

until he lets himself be helped,

I promise.

Promise me something.

Don't let anyone

ever

silence you.

Do you promise?

- I didn't know what I was doing.

- Yeah, I know.

You were sleepwalking.

And you were half-awake for a while.

But it's no big deal. Everything's fine.

- I did it at your age too.

- But did you remember it?

What?

I remember what I was dreaming about.

It was the monster again.

The one from the cave?

He wanted to hurt us.

He was wearing a ski mask,

so I couldn't see his face.

[thunder rumbling]

A ski mask? Really?

And he was here. In this house.

[music fades]

[thunder rumbling]

[thunder rumbling]

[Bruno] It didn't feel like a dream.

I was very scared.

- As if it were real.

- [Álex] Yeah.

And um

That fear, have you ever felt it before?

What does it feel like?

That something bad will happen.

- [unsettling music rises]

- Huh.

[thunder rumbling]

[exhales]

Okay, here's what we'll do.

Let's not tell Mom

about this for now. Okay?

If it happens again, you tell me. Okay?

Try to get some sleep.

Close your eyes, sweetie.

Close 'em.

That's it, bud.

[sighs]

Hey

[music subsides]

- I'm sorry about what happened.

- You always say that, Papa.

But you never do anything.

[Judy sighs]

[pensive music playing]

[Judy] Every kid dreams

about monsters at some point.

I did. I'm sure you did too.

Maybe Bruno's episodes aren't dreams.

And what if he's seeing what I'm seeing?

No one can predict the future.

Or see things that happened in the past.

But I couldn't possibly

How could I have guessed

about you being tied up like you were?

How could I have known that?

I could've said something in my sleep.

You could've heard it

while you were asleep

and included it in your dream.

I didn't dream it.

But none of that matters now.

How are you?

How are you?

We're both going through some heavy stuff.

I know you're worried about Bruno.

And you're worried about me.

But that's not right.

You have a lot on your plate.

Álex, you gave him a big scare last night.

That's not good.

Him and Bea.

[Álex sighs]

Judy

[breathing shakily]

Álex.

What do I do?

[Judy] Álex

I think

it's time for you to get some help.

And I know someone

who can help you. Trust me.

[gentle music swells]

After everything

that happened to me, I [sighs]

started having some awful nightmares.

[horns honking]

[Judy] I decided to leave Toulouse

and go back to Santander.

[indistinct chatter]

[Judy] As if running away

would fix everything.

Judy.

[intense music playing]

[elevator bell dings]

[panting]

[distorted scream]

[laughter]

[muffled scream]

[muffled scream]

[knocking on door]

[intense music subsides]

[Judy] A work colleague who had gone

through a rough patch told me that,

just like for me,

there was a time when getting out of bed

was unbearable for her.

Until she saw a psychiatrist.

Dr. Kauffman.

Going to her

was certainly the most important decision

I've made in my life.

I wouldn't be here if it weren't for her.

[uplifting music playing]

Judy Garmendia? Shall we?

[Judy] Her method is intensive.

After a just month,

I was able to heal a lot.

[Judy] I'm doing much better.

I feel more at ease.

And, um I sleep better.

- The nightmares haven't

- The nightmares will stay, Judy.

Maybe forever.

Keep in mind that they're

the scar of a very deep wound.

[Judy] She was right.

But at least I was finally ready

to move on after a long time.

[uplifting music building]

[Judy] I quit my job,

moved out of my apartment

I only kept a couple of things.

And I left so I could find myself.

[bird calling]

[wind whipping]

But before I could get a fresh start,

first, I needed to discover

who this new Judy was.

I hiked

and traveled alone,

without direction.

On my journey or in my life.

And I started rebuilding myself.

Little by little.

Without rush.

[crickets chirping]

[gulls calling]

[Judy] With every step forward,

I felt like I was leaving behind

what had happened to me.

The wounds were still there.

They'd changed me.

[triumphant orchestral music swells]

And then one day, I discovered something

that changed my life forever.

[music subsides]

Hey! Join us!

It's okay, come on! [laughs]

[hens clucking]

[Judy] They lived on a farm

they'd restored,

which was surrounded by nature.

And they invited me to spend

a few days with them.

[indistinct chatter]

[Judy] A lost paradise

where they could cultivate

body and soul.

[donkey braying]

- [woman] The noise sounded like a

- [Judy] That's where I met Aurora,

Who became my best friend after some time.

- Three eggs, Aurora.

- Ah, three? Perfect. [chuckles]

[Judy] And as time went by,

the fear started going away.

- I started to feel safer.

- Those the cookies?

Aurora's the only other person

who knows about my story.

She invited me to her hometown,

a little place on the coast.

Where time went by in a different way.

[gulls calling]

- It's gorgeous.

- Right?

[Judy] Aurora ran a hostel, but she wanted

to retire and move to Tenerife one day.

- [Aurora] What do you think?

- [Judy] I think it's beautiful.

[Aurora] I'm glad you think so.

Good morning.

[Judy] What was meant to be a few weeks

turned into a few years.

You'll be staying in room number five.

[man] Great.

- [Judy] Welcome.

- Thanks.

Good morning.

[Judy] Over time,

she gave me more responsibilities,

Like coming up with our daily menu

and running yoga classes.

And before I knew it,

we were both starting a new life.

[keys jangle]

[tender music playing]

[Judy sniffles]

Your home.

Thanks, Aurora.

- [car door closes]

- [engine starts]

JUDY'S HOSTEL

[Judy] I fit in with Tremore.

Peaceful.

Not too many people.

[indistinct chatter]

The perfect place to make sure I had

control of who came into my life.

I focused on being happy.

My only ambition was to enjoy every day.

Morning.

- [door opens]

- [bell dings]

[Judy] Until four months ago.

[door closes]

- [Judy] Hello?

- Hi.

All of our rooms are booked,

so we're closed.

Uh It's not that.

I just need to connect to the Internet,

and my neighbors told me

I could do that here.

Oh, yeah. Sure. Come with me.

- By the way, I'm Judy.

- Álex. Nice to meet you.

Come on.

- You can sit here.

- [Álex] Thanks.

Hi. How's it going?

[Judy] The day we met, I felt something

I hadn't felt in a long time.

[typing on laptop]

[Judy] Before Kauffman,

I wouldn't have been able

to be alone with a man.

[indistinct chatter]

[Judy] That talk made me open up

like I'd never opened up before.

- For you. It's made here, in this town.

- Thank you.

Try it.

[laughing]

We were talking all night,

until the sun came up.

[gentle music continues]

- We were two strangers.

- Mm-hmm.

Who suddenly connected.

[chuckles]

- Even though we tried to hide it.

- [gasps]

No, no. Watch out.

[Judy] You came to Tremore

to decide what to do with your life.

You were lost.

Just like I was when I came here.

When I ask myself, "Why you?"

The answer is very simple.

Because I understood you.

[tender music swells]

[music fades]

You are the strongest woman that I know.

Your mother would be proud.

[music ends]

Kauffman would say that

we're all equally strong.

But we need to find that strength in here.

You're worried Kauffman

will tell you something that

you don't wanna hear?

If you decide you don't wanna try this out

and see it through,

whatever's been happening to you

might end up causing the harm

you're trying so hard to avoid.

Don't waste time.

[uplifting music resumes]

[birds singing]

FOR ESTRELLA

[music fades out]

[Estrella laughs]

[playing gentle melody]

[plays wrong note]

[plays wrong note]

[plays wrong note]

[mother] Did you compose it?

[unsettling music playing]

[chuckles softly]

Come on. Play it again.

[metronome ticking rapidly]

[music fades out]

[knocking on door]

- [grandfather] Hey! [laughs]

- [kids] Grandpa!

- How are you?

- [Bea] Good.

[Álex] You made it, huh?

Not bad for someone

who's never used a GPS.

Well, that's the thing about having

a good old map.

You never get lost. [chuckles]

I see you're still trying

to starve the barbers in town.

- Well I guess so, yeah.

- [Judy chuckles]

I'm Judy.

You're the "friend."

- Nice to meet you.

- [Bruno] Hey, Grandpa.

- They're a couple. They sleep together.

- Hey!

- [Bruno laughs]

- [Álex] Hey! What was that, huh?

Let's go, come on.

[grandfather] Well

Where are you taking me?

[Bea] I'm showing you around the house.

[ominous music playing]

Okay.

This is provisional, okay?

Just until they fix the landline.

So you don't have to go to the lighthouse

to get a signal if something happens.

- And you say I'm old-fashioned?

- Remember how it works?

I understood the first time, son.

The second was one too many.

[Álex] Are you sure?

- Man

- Fine, fine, fine.

There's dinner in the fridge

and some snacks. You know.

Oh, they're fixing the basement tomorrow.

Don't go down there. It's disgusting.

Álex.

Relax. We're gonna be fine here.

Will you be okay?

Yeah. I think so, yeah.

It'll be good to talk

to someone different.

Someone with more technical knowledge.

Yeah.

And does Judy know her well?

The The doctor, you know?

What?

[sighs]

The whole thing with your mother,

from one doctor to another

Each of them with their own treatment

and their own theories.

I got sick of it all, Álex. And

I don't know.

They think they know everything,

and yet, they took a lot of shots

in the dark with your mother.

Well, I just thought you were

as disappointed in them as I was, so

But anyway yeah.

I'm just gonna try, Pop.

- If you think it's a good idea

- I've made my decision.

- You just have to respect it.

- Sure.

Of course.

But I mean, if you need

if you need me to talk to the doctor, uh

about your mother,

or about you as a kid,

or or or whatever

Thanks, Pop.

Sure.

Well, I uh

I wanted to ask you something, actually.

What?

Leave Bruno out of all this, please.

Paula's taking him to the psychologist.

This whole thing about the night terrors

They're not night terrors.

Álex. Bruno is just a kid

who's far away from his dad

and living in another country.

- Dad.

- [Judy] Álex.

We have to leave.

- Santander's an hour away.

- Okay.

Dad.

They're not night terrors.

I know you agree with me.

And if you'd taken my sleepwalking

as a kid more seriously,

maybe I wouldn't have smashed my hand

with the piano.

[Álex scoffs]

I'm gonna go say bye to the kids.

Kids I'm leaving.

Move that leg, man.

[grunts]

[indistinct chatter on TV]

- [Álex] Are you still mad at me?

- No.

[Álex] Behave, okay?

Take care of Grandpa.

- Can we sleep in front of the TV?

- No.

- Please let us.

- No.

Yes, and you can take us upstairs

when you get back.

[Álex] Negative.

- But why not?

- Because.

Fine.

It's a deal.

[grunts] No!

- No! [kissing]

- [kids laughing]

[Álex] No.

Give me a kiss.

Come here. [kissing]

[somber music playing]

[engine starts]

Try to get some sleep.

[unsettling music playing]

[sighs deeply]

[crow caws]

[birds singing]

Álex.

[Álex takes a deep breath]

[gently] It'll be fine.

[sighs]

[engine starts]

[footsteps approaching]

[Kauffman] Mr. De la Fuente?

Victoria Kauffman. Come with me.

- How are you?

- [Álex] Good.

Well, Mr. De la Fuente,

I won't say your case is unusual.

I've heard of similar things.

But more fragmentary, I'd say.

Yours is like a big opera.

You have an interesting brain, really.

They said that about my mother.

What you call "visions"

are simply explanations

that your brain, for some reason,

gives to your nocturnal wanderings.

"For some reason"?

[chuckles]

You're looking for answers

to everything that's been happening.

I understand that.

But I've only just met you.

I don't know

why your mind's playing tricks on you yet.

However, what I do know

is that everything

in life can be explained scientifically.

You think so?

[inhales sharply]

Are you a man of faith or of science?

[takes a deep breath]

You don't have to answer me now.

I'm just asking you to think about it.

Have you ever read

Interpretation of Dreams by Freud?

No.

There's a story in it

about an average man who had

a dream about curing animals

with a medicinal plant.

He woke up

and remembered the plant's name,

Asplenium ruta muralis.

Later, he found out

the name he dreamed of not only exists,

but it's the name of

an actual medicinal plant as well.

The moral of the story?

Sixteen years prior to that,

that man's mind,

during a trip to Switzerland,

had registered, filed away,

and forgotten the name of that plant.

Until one night,

while his mind was coming up with

a new dream,

he recovered that detail

from a dusty corner

to present it under the spotlights

of the current state of his mind.

Asplenium ruta muralis.

That kind of thing happens a lot.

And the first thing

that comes to mind, every time,

is a paranormal explanation.

Past lives, reincarnation.

And also Messianic visions, like the ones

you think you're suffering from.

But why me?

You probably have more chances

than most people.

We're talking about a mind

that is creative.

A mind which is accustomed to expressing

deep and unconscious feelings

through something as abstract

as musical notes.

And we can't forget about your accident.

The aftereffects of an electric shock

in your brain

may be a decisive factor

in these episodes you're having.

When it comes to the form they take,

their symbolism

we could spend an entire year

in psychotherapy just to try to fathom it.

Your case is far from simple,

Mr. De la Fuente.

Is that all you can offer me?

Have you heard of clinical hypnosis?

- I'll be hypnotized?

- Don't worry.

You won't lose consciousness.

[monitor beeping]

[Kauffman] You're a little tense, Álex.

- [Álex clears throat]

- [Kauffman] Try to relax.

[Álex exhales]

[Kauffman] Perfect.

Your heart rate is stabilizing.

Don't be distracted by all this equipment.

It's actually very simple.

You only need to do two things.

Relax and let me guide you.

Guide me? Where to?

[Kauffman] Hmm.

We haven't started yet,

and you're already doing

one of the two things wrong.

Try to relax, please.

[loud pulsations]

[Kauffman] I want you

to let your mind go blank.

Focus all your attention on the lights.

[Álex breathes deeply]

Now, I want you to picture yourself

standing before a door.

[exhales deeply]

[Kauffman] There's no rush.

[inhales deeply]

- [Kauffman] Do you see the door?

- [Álex] Yes.

[Kauffman] You're in front of that door,

and behind it is a memory

of your choice, the one you select.

Choose a moment in your life.

I'll count to three,

and you'll open that door.

- Do you understand?

- Yes.

Whatever moment you've chosen

whatever's behind that door,

we'll discover the truth.

Let's get started.

One.

- [loud pulsations]

- [screams]

[Kauffman] Two.

- [laughing]

- [crash]

- Three.

- [electricity crackles]

[intense music swells

to a terrifying crescendo]

- [plays wrong note]

- [music stops abruptly]
