[news reporter] We begin tonight
with a historic storm hitting the west.

Southern California is being inundated

with life-threatening flooding
and mudslides.

Residents have been advised
to keep travel to a minimum.

The historic rain has turned streets
and streams into raging rivers,

taking down trees and power lines,
damaging vehicles and homes.

More rain is expected tonight,

as the atmospheric river
is still passing over Southern California.
