well this morning I have a problem of course I have many problems but this is

one that you can help me with have any of you ever seriously thought about what you're going to be when you

grow up the kind of job I mean or the business that you want to go into oh I like to be

an FBI agent I want to be a fireman

well have any of you ever thought of going in for farming Dairy farming well I have sort of so am I uh how can a girl

be a Dairy Farmer anyway if I can I can marry one can I

well Sammy would you mind telling us why you thought of canary farming well lots

of movie guys have ranches and Farms look at Joe McRae he's got a big Ranch well Alan Latin Bing Crosby he's got one

in Nevada so I guess it must be pretty good doing it because those guys are no dummies with a buck

now Annette would you mind telling us what gave you the idea well when my mother was a little girl she lived on a

farm it was my grandfather's farm and I spent a couple of vacations there I loved it well here's what I'm driving at

the American Dairy Association has made arrangements for a boy and a girl who are interested in farming to spend two

weeks at a dairy farm in Wisconsin

[Music] it's a great opportunity for you to find what it takes to make a successful Dairy

Farmer now all the arrangements have been made so by Saturday at the latest unette and you Sammy will be on your way

to the McCandless dairy farm in Wisconsin

youngsters your own age imagine I hope the boys get home before they arrive they probably won't leave

business keeping a bull in his past we all know that Linda but it's his Bull and his pasture so we can't do anything

about Mr knucklemeyer but we can do something about the two of you

now children don't forget that Annette and Sammy have always lived in Hollywood they probably

don't know anything about Farm life so I'd like you to show them just as much as you can about a dairy farm sure Mom

he's one of the first settlers in this part of the country of course we've added on to it and remodeled it well I

belong to 4-H club yeah we belong to the Pleasant Valley club and the club's gonna give a party in your attic before

Sammy well it's a good healthy business and they say if you use the old noodle you can make a day off yeah but it's

plenty hard work running a big dairy farm like this boy you've got to work hard at anything if you want to get

anywhere yeah I guess so hey Sammy come on over here I want to show you something

this is Hannah's House well who's Hannah she's Moochie's 4-han she's a band

oh that figures yeah I didn't know you were old enough to belong to 4-H club he isn't really he's just practicing on

Hannah till he gets old enough where is he old girl I guess you went

out for a walk what's the idea leaving the door open so she can go wandering all over the place you better find her

Whopper what do they have silos on farms to keep the silage in silage that's the cow's food chop the

pay and stuff The Silo preserves and cures it cheers it what's the matter is it sick

sure would be if we didn't have it right it'd spoil [Music]

cool what's with the Tails I always thought cows Fender calves direct they do they nursed until they get enough

classrooms but that only takes three or four days then we bucket feed them colostrum what's that colostrum's the

first milk of cowgis after she drops her calf drops it oh the poor little thing

how come she does that how dumb can you be that's what they call it when a cow

cats you know like when a horse goes oh colostrum's got everything in her

newborn calf needs to give it a good start in life it has a lot of stuff in it that helps keep the cast from getting sick for Pete's sakes quicker yeah

they kept falling flat in their faces they're purebreds plops out of Miss Burke Ormsby by King Ormsby Homestead

and King is a champion boy this doll's in better shape than my

bed and went home we have to change the bedding every day to keep them clean they're so greedy they nibble everything

in sight yeah just like moochie always stuffing I don't need my bedding do I Linda of

course not moochie Jimmy's just teasing would you like to feed one of that oh

boy they sure do a good job on that shower we have to be honestly careful not to oversee them it's no it snows

raising calves more goofy things can happen to them especially in their first months like puppies huh yeah only worse

but if you can get them past the first three months you've got a pretty good chance of winding up with a real milk cow what if they're white cows you mean

bulls flap is one what are you gonna do with them we'll show them at the County Fair in September we'll probably sell

plop when he gets big enough we should get a fancy price for him too for a little run like that he's no run he's a

purebred hosting for Pete's sake are you gonna stand here and yak all day are we

gonna go do the other chores ah keep your shirt on till we finish feeding the calves

well a lot of you youngsters think of the dairy farm so far I'm gonna say one thing the food's great

it's wonderful out here in the country everything's so fresh and green and pretty and there's so many things to see

and do you can say that again Annette especially the do hey Mom

you bet Annette you think you'd rather be a Dairy Farmer than a musketeer well it's

kind of fun being a Mouseketeer we can't be Mouseketeers in that but we

do have all the things that you folks in the city enjoy radio TV good schools

churches movies and Neighbors and cows and cows

what's the matter moochie we haven't heard a word out of you will you keep telling me not to talk

with my mouthful that's right dear I forgot

Sammy want to see Romeo Romeo Lucy Hannah's husband guys no he's our

Bull and he's a real tough guy [Music]

there he is any a tough looking guys it's me he is

kind of mean looking isn't he Jesse's a little depressed we've only had him a couple of days and he's not used to it

here yet most animals get upset when they're moving especially Cows and Bulls too

what's the matter tough guy you home sick you know something Sammy I don't think

he likes you you may be right moochie oh he's just a little temperamental they get peevish once in a while just like

people do he kind of kind of cater to him that is if you want to keep him healthy and happy

Romeo that's a funny name for a bull oh how'd you come and name him there mom

named him you know that didn't Shakespeare Romeo and Juliet oh yeah

poor guy he sure looks lonesome oh he's got plenty Julius about 40 of

them there they are now coming in from the pasture [Music]

you mean all those are his girls sure on a dairy farm the cows are half the herd

the Bull's the other half we're here [Music]

a singing group called edelwai Stars maybe before you go home Paulie will get him to sing for you they sure can sing

all by himself sure I sometimes help them or at some jobs oh it's not so bad

as soon as they get in the bar we'll show you how it's done boy they sure take their time don't they

um hey Paulie that was a neat yodem that

you were doing there yeah but I guess it sounds a little foolish going around the old link to a bunch of cows it sounded

wonderful yeah it was great real great sure was my grandfather he teached me

when I'm a boy back in the old country always be your little to the cows sometimes I think they kind of like it

the cows I mean I don't blame them I wish I knew how to do it it's not hard to do I assure you

helps them get more milk besides he probably likes music

that's the milking machine you mean you milk the cows by Machine sure do take the hours to milk and hurt

as big as ours by hand with the machine each colony takes a few minutes you want a milk one

what can I lose here

hey how's the schedule work anyway oh you just put on the cups and the Machine does the rest the cups Oh you mean these

things yeah oh I get it one on each huh yeah but

first you have to wash the other the other one I made it funny the utter is

the cause milk bag pop calls it the business end of the tile all right Young fella I wash the other

for you

how often do you milk them once a week oh no we milk them twice a day in the

morning and the evening Sundays too yep Christmas and new year's Halloween and

even the Fourth of July cows don't know anything about Sundays or holidays [Music]

I massage the other for you too so she let down her milk

letting down the milk means getting it started and you have to be Mighty careful too because if the cow gets

excited or worried or anything she's liable to hold it up temperamental Huskies aren't they yeah as soon as the milk is let down you

have to start milking But first you take a sample of the milk to check it

[Music] then you put on the machine

all right Young fella you ready sure now you know how it goes sure right into the

cows crankings [Music] here

oh I get it Now put on the cup

easy now dog let's look this out together shall we oh she didn't mean anything you must have pitched her or

something oh Bessie wouldn't hurt anybody it's all right now this

here better let me milk her it's bad for calling to wait around after she's left out her milk

all we have to do there is go out in the back porch ring in the bottle open it up and drink it

oh that's how that works huh yeah this lever pushes the milk into the

pipeline and sends it onto the cooler tank in the milk house that way the milk never comes in contact with the air the

school in our tank keeps it fresh until it's picked up by a truck from the factory and there it's inspected

pasteurizing bottles ready for delivery direct your doorstep just like I said all you have to do is go out in the back

porch bring it in and drink it [Music]

that was pretty loose wasn't it yeah yeah how much are we got

okay hop on where are we going Jimmy out in the field Pop's gonna show you and

Sammy a few bits about crop raising and cultivating and stuff like that I thought all you did on a dairy farm was

milk the cows you not only have to milk them but you have to feed them and raise

them and raise them to make any money you have to raise your own feed to feed

them to raise them yeah you want to go around again
