came from my Town's play center I was

going to play the sh**t the Hoops

basketball game but somebody was already

there playing it oh this girl that I

just can't figure

out two girls were playing and I was

next but one of the girls was really

good she kept getting extra points and

extra time to play her friend went off

somewhere and I thought they were f

finished so I went up to

her um excuse me but uh I was wondering

how long you were going to

play um I said how long are you going to

play I'd sort of like to have it turn

myself you know it's not very nice

you're not the only one here you

know look you really should let other

people have a

turn okay fine fine if you want to hog

the game go ahead I've got better things

to do

anyway so I gave up and came back here

oh Sky you know some people can be very

shy maybe this girl is shy too well I

think you can be shy and still not

ignore

somebody I know look let's go back and

try to meet her together I'm very good

at talking to shy people maybe I can be

your coach my coach yeah yeah yeah maybe

deaf she's deaf yes that's the reason

she didn't turn around and talk to you

but she's really nice guy and also her

friend is really nice so come on let's

I'd like to Kiki but I feel terrible I I

mean I was kind of mean to her you were

not mean Sky she just didn't know she

know Kiki I mean I wish I knew more

about deaf people I mean I'd like to

meet this girl but I don't know what to

say or even how to say it well I know

someone we can ask about this guy so

wrong well there's this girl who has

playing the sh**t the Hoops game and I

want to meet her but uh I don't know

how why does you know how Sky well I

don't know how because she's deaf she

can't hear me so how can we be friends

if she can't hear what I'm

saying wait a minute Kiki you said

Marley was deaf so how come she can hear

what we're

saying okayy K is right I am d i can't

hear what you're saying but I can see

what you say I can read lips read

lips yes I'm watching how your mouth

makes the sh with words when you talk

you watch my mouth when I

talk it takes a lot of practice but some

death people can read lips can this girl

read lips well um I don't know if she

can read lips I talked to her friends

and then the two of them spoke by the

moving their

hands they were sign Lish here at the

United States we use American sish

a lot of De people use sign

language is it hard to speak in Sign

Language it doesn't have to be try this

guy say hello to me but don't use your

mouth use the

head don't use my mouth but

uh very good Sky you just use a simple

kind of Sid

that was sign language but I just waved

it is still sign language now try this

use sign language like

this no there are different kinds of

deafness and people become deaf in

different ways oh Marley how do you say

Kiki she said my name is Jane oh hi nice

to meet you Jane Wendy you are extremely

good with the sign language yeah yeah

did you learn it in order to talk with

Jane I learned it to talk to a lot of

people I'm deff too what what but but

you can hear us yeah or or are you

reading our lips yeah I have what's

called partial hearing I can hear some

of what you say they're a different kind

of deafness Jane can hear nothing and I

can hear a little plus I use a hearing

aid see oh and why doesn't Jane use a

hearing aid I'll ask her why don't you

use a hearing

aid she says it wouldn't help she's been

deaf since birth oh oh um can she talk

like you mhm you want to know if you can

talk I can c a little oh um Wendy uh

some of Jane's words are a little hard

to understand um why does she say them

like that remember Jane has never heard

anyone talk before never even heard

herself talking it's hard for her to

know how words should sound oh well it's

sure not hard ER to play the sh**t the

Hoops game she's

awesome the Hoops you want to play with

me oh yeah that be great yeah come on

Skye wow oh good thank you oh wait uh

thanks no welcome oh you said you're

welcome H it's nice that you guys are

playing with us some kid won't even try

to talk to us especially

Jane yeah I mean uh when Kiki told me

that Jane was deaf I was a little

worried I didn't know what to say or or

how to say it it happened all the time

Sky just remember we're death we just

can't feel like other kids some kids

don't understand it makes them afraid of

us it happened to other de kids too

right when I

sign people stare at

me and I feel shy I use this microphone

to help me hear and what I really hate

about it is when the kids grab it and

say like hi Mar can you hear me and they

know I hate it some

sometimes people say what that thing in

your ear and I get

embarrassed I can do anything the same

as hearing

people see but hearing kids remember

that death can do pretty much anything

they can do like playing video games

Boogie boarding and

dancing ready

go that's Michael and Brian Michael can

hear the music and dances to it that

way Brian is deaf he can't hear the

music but he can feel it

I feel the music and I look at the other

people and that's how a death kid can

move that's

all I feel the vibrations in my

bones and it moves throughout my

body in this dance class some of the

kids can hear and some are

deaf that's their teacher

Adrian

stop I love to dance because it's

exciting when you dancing with someone

and then you have like a few minutes

when Adrian is doing a dance and you you

know how to do the dance already you

could teach your partner how to do the

dance really

[Applause]

I love to dance because it's exciting to

perform and it surprises me it's

exciting with the music I feel something

and then without it it feels different

and so I know the freeze

[Music]

I like dancing with like um de people

cuz it's like a new adventure it's like

wow I can't believe I'm doing

this when hearing kids and deaf kids get

together like this they not only perform

some great

dances they also become

friends when I first met my death

partner it was scary because when they

try to say something to you you'll be

like

oh no I don't know what they saying now

that we've been working together like

for at least five months it's feel

normal because now they won't like try

to make fun of you because you say

something wrong in Sign Language or

something because they know you and

they're your friends and they like they

like really like

you hearing kid means a de

kid don't be

afraid they'll teach you how to learn

how to

[Music]

sign and then later on they can become

your

friend maybe even your best friend

pingpong you want to know how we play

are you saying she says that she's good

she's deaf that means she can't hear but

she uses this language called American

Sign

Language right right Sky I talk with my

hands so people who can't hear can see

what I'm saying you know what Marley I

speak another language too Apache and I

want to teach you how to say friend in

Apache it's

us oh yeah in American Sign Language the

sign for friend is

this ah

we speak different languages we can

still be be friends
