At 17 years old,
I jumped into this rock tribute band.

[Donny] Back in Florida, I was playing
a lot of island music like Jack Johnson,

stuff that you could just listen to
on the beach.

But once I moved to Nashville,
you play country music.

When you're coming back down,

I'm a dad of four girls. We had a son.

He was born and passed away
on my birthday.

speak for me, sing for me.

with the high heels I'm wearing.

What I love most about Reba is her ability
to put the room at ease,

whether she's in front of thousands
of people in a stadium

or she's, you know,
sitting with two good old boys

from the Southeast trying
to work through a song.

I never would have thought
that at 35 years old,

this girl dad would have
a chance at a music career.

And so, knowing that there's a chance

that I could make the knockouts,
it's really just caused me

to dig my heels down deep
and do the homework.

Just laying low and writing songs.

What instrument do you usually write on?

I really switch it up.
I try to start with piano,

and then I'll, like, go to guitar or bass.

I only play piano, so I have no choice.

I felt like you could both sing
kind of similar songs.

And I settled on Bruno Mars for you.

Are you into this? Are you feeling it?

-Feeling it.

At first we're like, okay,
this was an interesting choice.

I feel like it's soulful,

it's kind of bluesy, and it's still like
a big pop song still at the same time.

and I think it'll work.

For this song, I am definitely channeling

all of my feelings from my first love.

I grew up in Liberty, South Carolina,

a very small town... Like 2 or 3 stoplights,
a church pretty much on every corner.

I had never seen
a g*y relationship in person.

I had no one I could look up to,
no one I could call and ask for advice.

I did make a lot of errors along the way.

So I'm singing this song
from a standpoint of,

"I hope he does right by you,
because I couldn't."

[John] Ronnie, I think you're doing
all the right things right now,

so it's just gonna be pitch

and, you know, breathing
and all those things.

I think, Gene,
you're such a great vocalist,

so I'm not worried about you
actually hitting notes.

Like, I'm worried more
about making people feel it.

And right now you sound very good,

As someone who gigs all the time,

it's kind of easy to not always be

in the mode of really connecting
with the lyric.

It's just plug in and go.

I did a national tour
of "Man of La Mancha."

I hopped on some cruise ships.

I was singing about six nights a week.

That was one
of the most challenging experiences.

So, what I have to do

is basically push
the technical stuff aside

and really just bare the soul a bit more.

about working with John Legend

is that he's incredibly honest.

You always want to be teachable.

He's a brilliant musician
and I just want to keep learning.

Gene, when you started off,
there was so much theatrics

in your vocal and your hand movements,
everything about it.

When you hit that vibrato,

one of the most perfect vibratos
I've ever heard.

There were some notes
that you were hitting

that I don't think are legal
in California.

[Dan] There was a moment when, Ronnie,

you turned to the side
and hit a high note.

I was like, oh, man,
this is neck and neck.

One of the coolest parts
of the performance,

the wiggly wave, when you guys were
in the "ooh."

You guys did something with your hands.
It was absolute fire.

And doing it together, it was like this.

I mean, it was just like...
It was like waving.

You need to do that.

We gotta practice that.

We'll credit you guys on that, yeah.

family at its root.

Our language, our music,
our food especially.

It's like an unspoken pride in who we are,
to have a platform like this

and to sing in front of millions of people
and get to do it in my language.

Honestly, I just kind of over the years
of playing out, gigging.

I have a band. There's four of us.

We've been playing as many venues

country, pop, a lot of crowd-pleasers,

'cause we just like making sure
people have a good time.

Back home, I'm used to being on the farm,
baling hay, feeding cows,

and then the next day,
I'm with Dan and Shay.

What excites me the most
