is from my first "Voice" win.

-You won your first season on "The Voice"?
-I absolutely did.

That looks fake.

We're still the new guys around here.

We could use a little bit of help
from a seasoned vet.

Chance, you know
this is my ninth season, right?

Hey, "Voice" world.

Yeah, I might be the oldest contestant.

Pushing 50.

I'm Bryan Olesen, 49 years old,
from Lincoln, Nebraska.

There's a lot of life I have left,
and I'm here to live it.

I'm here to take a risk on this
and see where it goes.

I was the lead guitarist

for a really big Christian band
called the Newsboys, which was incredible.

They were Grammy-nominated,


one of the biggest bands
in Christian music.

It was a wonderful experience.

But the past couple years,

I had come up
from a pretty heavy season in life.

My marriage ended after 24 years,

and my divorce was the hardest thing
that I faced yet.

And for me,
it kind of took me out of the game...

for a little bit, and, um, it was dark.
You know, it was really heavy.

Really, one of the things
that I remember pulling me through

was my daughter, Jadyn.

You're gonna do great.

You've done this a million times.
A million times.

Being here on "The Voice"

is a way to show my kids
that, man, life's gonna...

It's gonna hit you,
but you gotta keep going.

And I feel like I've gotten good
at helping artists figure out

what their passion is,

and then how to just help them
plan out their performances.

You truly look like a superstar.

One comparison I thought of was Bono,
not because you sound exactly like him,

but just the way
you carried yourself and your range,

and you have so much chops

and everything you need
to be a great superstar.

Hi. I am Frank Garcia.

I am 19 years of age,
and I'm from New York City,

but I'm originally from Roma, Texas.

[Dan] Amazing.

Frank, I was just blown away
by your speaking voice.

'Cause, no, you have, such a cool control
of your lower range when you're singing,

and it's very, like, full and round.

And it's just a testament
to your vocal ability,

and probably how much you've been training
and working at singing.

Do you perform out a lot live?

Yes, I did mariachi for, like,
almost all my life, so we perform a lot.

-That's incredible.

Being Mexican, I'm so proud of my culture.

Back at home throughout
most of the valley in Texas,

mariachi music... It's a big thing.

Around the age of ten I did La Voz Kids,

which is The Voice Kids Season Four,

and I made it to battles.

But this is, like, the big leagues.

Oh, my God.

I am just super nervous,
but also really excited,

because today my genre
leans mostly towards R & B.

I feel like it really helped me
embrace myself.

Even though I love mariachi music
and it's my culture,

it did feel very restrictive.

I just couldn't be who I wanted to be.

♪ Sometimes you're misunderstood ♪

♪ When your intentions are good ♪

[Frank]
Since I was little, I knew that I was g*y.

Because we do live right next
to the border of Mexico,

there does tend to be
a lot of conservative ideologies

and traditional views.

It was really hard for me to grow up.

Most of my life, I felt like
I just couldn't be myself.

But I just remember the day
that my dad came into my room,

and I just told him that I was g*y,

and-and he just told me
he was gonna be there for me,

and he loved me.

And that just felt so comforting.

Having their support, I was finally free.

And I finally feel like I'm beautiful.

I'm comfortable with who I am.

And I know
not every Latino g*y kid has this.

And so I'm just so thankful.

my family's history goes back generations.

And the property that I live on
is what we call a Hawaiian homestead.

It's land specifically dedicated
for Native Hawaiian people.

This is the family. Everybody say "hi."

Right now we have four generations
living on that property.

And every Sunday, we have a big party.

Tutu, tell us the secret
to a good roast pork.

[Kamalei, in English] Music and hula
are two of the biggest things

that mean the most to us.

[singing in Hawaiian]

[Kamalei, in English] At a college
prep school on the island of Maui,

I teach Hawaiian studies,

and one of my favorites
is traditional Hawaiian music,

music that's sung
in the Hawaiian language.

My brother and I...
our quartet, Na Wai 'Eha,

we released a few albums.

We were nominated for a Grammy
for Best Regional Roots Album.

We've been able to accomplish a lot,

making it more popular
so that the younger generation

will continue to sing these songs.

Singing on "The Voice,"

now is the time because my wife said so.
[laughs]

My biggest reason for wanting
to make a team is for my family.

I want my daughter to know
when she watches this one day

that her dad was brave enough...
[clicks tongue]

...to leave the comfort
and the love of his family.

You've got to work hard
to make a living in Hawaii.

[person] Here we go!

[Kamalei] It's really expensive, and
a lot of us are pushed out of our homes

because we can't afford it.

-I'm excited.

They are the most important thing to me.

These are tears of joy
because I love and miss them so much.

I'm doing this for them.

There's a cultural connection there.

My people... We've been through
a lot of the same struggles,

reminds us to set yourself free.

for something really specific.

how you represent your culture.

in front of millions of people,

it brought something out of me.

It's a very radical song,

and it means a lot to all
oppressed peoples around the world.

and representing
Pacific Islanders, Indigenous people,

Hawaiians, like, people around the world,

I think it's really important
for the show to have.

That's the goal of being here,
is to represent all Native people.

How old are you guys?

-Thirty-five.

-It really sucks I look older than you.
-You look like you're 24.

-I was college in 2010.
-I was 1995.

I graduated in the 20th century. [laughs]

Oh, my God.

This is what I'm talking about.

And guess what size they are?

A ten! [laughs]

My name is TEN, like the number ten.

I am 37 years old.

I live in Atlanta, but I'm born
and raised in Chicago, Illinois.

Basically, my name is Tenette,
and half of my name is TEN.

Who don't want to be a ten? Right?

After I graduated from high school,

I got a full scholarship
to play basketball

at a really awesome community college.

For some reason,
I was singing in the locker room,

and they were like,

"TEN, you should sing
the national anthem."

And after I would sing, people were like,
"Can I get your autograph?"

And then a light bulb went off,
and I was like,

"Oh, wow. I think this is something
I can really take serious."

But I was still kind of iffy
because my mom used to always say,

"Well, singing don't really
pay the bills," you know?

So I had to get a job. [chuckles]

I moved to Atlanta,

started working for
one of the biggest airlines,

and that really started to give me
the finances I needed to invest in myself.

I saved my money,
and I ended up leaving my job.

Went out and I joined a band.

I started singing at the open mics.

That was a turning point in my life,

and I'm just looking
for the next big opportunity

to present who I am and what I stand for.

[announcer]

My name is Ashley Bryant,
I'm 26 years old,

-Me too. How long you been singing?

I've been singing my whole life.

Professionally, just about four years.

I got into a car wreck
a couple years back,

so I'm 30% hearing in my right ear.

-Oh, wow.
-And here I am.

-[laughs]
-[John] Yeah!

[Ashley] Once I made the decision
to pursue music full-time,

you know, I thought everything
was gonna go good.

And then my world got flipped upside down.

In April of 2019,
I had got into a car wreck.

The airbags didn't deploy,
and the seat belt didn't lock,

so I pretty much broke my face
on the steering wheel.

I had a fracture in my nose,
stitches in my mouth.

My right ear suffered the most injury,

and then eventually I lost my hearing
in my right ear because of it.

When she had her accident,

uh, I was at work.

And, uh, so I got that call, you know,

and that's the last call
you ever want to hear.

If she would have waited five more seconds
from that stop sign and pulled out,

I don't think she'd be here today.

I'll take the loss of hearing
before the loss of her.

[Ashley] I absolutely worried,

"Am I gonna lose my hearing completely?

Am I gonna be able to sing?"

So it was definitely a scary thought.

It's been a huge adjustment to my life.

Not only did I have to learn
how to read people's mouths

and try to understand what they're saying,

then I also had to learn
how to sing with an imbalance.

Music has helped me
get through hearing loss.

You know, it continues
to push me to learn things

and step out of my comfort zone
and take risks

and learn to love myself
the way that I am.

I love your energy and your enthusiasm.

I had an artist named
Maelyn Jarmon. Season 16.

She won "The Voice,"
and she also had significant hearing loss.

Just so you know,
like, the sky's the limit

for what you can do on this show.

And I know it's a challenge
you have to work through,

The minute I heard you
start singing that song,

I was looking down the way,
looking at Queen Reba,

and I was like,
"That is the perfect match."

I'm a little bummed out

[Asher] Growing up in Selma was amazing.

There was so much history around me.

Civil rights movement occurred in Selma
with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

And we lived right down the street
from the famous Edmund Pettus Bridge.

Like, my grandma
was a part of Bloody Sunday.

That is when they marched
across the bridge.

Every year, Selma have
a commemoratory celebration

where they honor the ones
that started the civil rights movement.

Just randomly, the mayor
of the city knew I could sing,

and he just kind of called us up
and was like,

"Hey, can Asher come sing
for the President?"

We're like, "The president of the school?"

He was like, "No, the President
of the United States of America."

They invited President Barack Obama
to be the keynote speaker.

So up until that point, I was just singing
in church and talent shows.

That was my thing every weekend.

So when I got the experience
to sing for Obama,

yeah, I was holding my bladder.

Singing those civil rights songs,
and now here I am,

standing on the same bridge,

singing the same songs...
"We Shall Overcome."

It's just absolutely amazing.

I come from a place
where no one ever makes it out.

Never really been out of Alabama.

Traveling just wasn't an option.
But what was an option was singing.

So most of my life, this is all I've done.

I never, ever thought
I would come to California.

I never, ever thought
I would see a mountain.

I never, ever thought
I would see an ocean.

And to be here is the grandest thing
I've ever experienced in my life.

I'm excited that my entire city
will be able to see this.

I pray I make them all proud.

so kids can relate to it.

I didn't have a lot of confidence
when I was performing,

and it would be me and my mom.

We used to sing at church together
when I was ten.

And I kept my hands to my side
the whole time.

I didn't move.

trying to be invisible.

Around middle school,

I started posting videos on social media,

and what comes with that
is also hate comments.

Instead of people
commenting on me singing,

they would be commenting on my weight.

It hit me so hard.
I retreated into a shell,

and I didn't leave that shell
until I was 17 years old.

It wasn't until I saw Lizzo
for the first time

that I saw someone who was bigger
and just, like, k*lling it.

My whole worldview shifted.

It gave me that confidence.

I genuinely... I love what I look like,

and now I gig as much as I possibly can
all around New York City.

It's wonderful to see
how far that she's come

because I've seen you go
from very shy to super outgoing.

I'm a really big fan of "The Voice"

because it doesn't matter
what you look like.

It just matters how you sound.

I was so excited to be able
to have this opportunity

because I feel so confident
on the stage now.

I used to be afraid of it,
and now it's like...

I belong here.

I could not have imagined
being here two years ago.

What kind of music do you like to sing?

Pop soul. I absolutely admire Adele,

[artist] I grew up in the Appalachian
Mountains, and I am 100% a mountain girl.

We played in the woods
like eight hours a day.

We'd get so far up in the woods,
we'd be like, "Which way is home?"

"I don't know, let's holler
and see if Mom answers."

I'm Summer Brooke, I'm 30 years old,
and I'm from Sylva, North Carolina.

Everybody on my mom's side of the family
played bluegrass music.

So every time you went
to a family gathering,

there were banjos, guitars,
fiddles, mandolins.

And I can remember
all of us cousins as kids,

you know, we would gather around the piano

and sing a bunch of hymns
that we would sing at church.

My family and I officially formed
The Mountain Faith Band in the year 2000.

We started in a lot of churches,

and it quickly turned into
playing three and four times a weekend.

Once we got into high school,

we were starting to go
to bluegrass festivals.

That led to opportunities
to play national anthems for the NFL

and Major League Baseball.

And I also had the opportunity
to live out a dream of mine

and play the Grand Ole Opry.

Everything really seemed to be lining up
like this was gonna be my career.

I remember being so excited
about the calendar for 2020.

There were so many cool things

that we were gonna get
to mark off the bucket list.

In three days' time, all of them canceled.

At that point, the band fell apart,

and everybody just decided
to do their own thing.

I feel like I was born to sing,

and I thought I never would
have the opportunity again.

When the band fell apart,
I went into teaching.

I taught second grade for a year.

The kids had a huge impact on my life.

Stuff I'll never forget.

But at the end of the day, like,

my lifelong dream
is to be out here singing.

and this is the very first time
I'll ever be onstage by myself.
