gonna get to do my two songs.
I'm just gonna be

And they said,
"Because Dolly Parton
just pulled in the parking lot
and she's gonna take
one of your songs."
And I said, "Well, sh**t,
she can take both of them.

about 200 shows a year.
You know, and being
able to travel is awesome,
especially coming
from such a small town.
We don't even know our
neighbors, which is hilarious.

to get four people
that I absolutely look
up to, to turn around.

When I was just a little
kid, I was in a tornado.
It ripped through Missouri.
We were actually in my
parents' business at the time.
It ripped the roof off and blew

just everything exploding.
We got out.
We made it to our car
and we made it home.
After being in the tornado,
it gave me really bad
separation anxiety.
I couldn't be away
from my parents.
Being able to play has
really been a release for me,
and now I'm like 100% better.
I credit music for that.

taking myself back

For me, I think about my
grandma that I lost a few years ago.

My grandpa actually passed
away the year I was born,
and I think that's why
me and my grandma
had such an incredible bond.
My grandma was my best
friend, my number-one supporter.
She was everything to me.
Even to this day, I miss
her every single day.
She would just
tell me to have fun
and go do what I
know how to do best.

what she would say.
You know what's so cool
is to hear your style of voice

I felt like that was
super understated,

in school talent shows
and stuff as a kid.
I know that 12-year-old
me would be over the moon
to be singing an Ed
Sheeran song on TV.

I go through in my life,
my wife really supports me.
I met my wife in math class.
We got married
when we were young.
I was 21 years old.
My wife and I moved to
Alabama two years ago
for my wife to go to
physical therapy school,
so it's been a grind
just making music work
because I'm actually
traveling to Nashville
multiple times a week.
But to see her doing
well is really inspiring.
And I'm able to
chase my dream now,
and it's really exciting 'cause
I ended up at "The Voice."

What excites me the most

out here in California.
My hometown is
Richlands, Virginia,
in the Appalachian area.
It's a small town of
about 5,000 people.
I've tried to hide my
Appalachian accent
being here in L.A., but
people notice when I sing.
The music that I would
hear on the radio as a kid
riding around with
my grandfather
has been a huge
inspiration to me.
The storytelling
aspects of country music,
that falls right in line
with what I'm trying to do.

Honestly, one of my
favorite types of voices
that you could
find in the Earth.
I love a gravelly
growl like that.

For me to actually get

For a long time of my life,
I struggled with just not
feeling like I deserved
to be in certain
places with my music.
When I was a kid, I
was very sheltered,
so I didn't get the
normal social situations
that most kids go through
when they grow up.
And even to this day, sometimes
I have a hard time fitting in.
So, to get advice
from one of the best artists
in the industry right now
kind of, like, freaks
me out a little bit.
But, you know, at the same
time, it's like I'm meant to be here.

I think I would connect with

I am at a point in my life

And "The Voice" is helping
me to see that I'm worthy.
As a songwriter
and as an artist,
I feel there's deep connection
to the way that Billie writes
and the way that
I aspire to write.
It draws back from that
inspiration of the '60s
and '70s where songwriting
and folk music was alive.
I cover a lot of
classics, and it's like,
oh, now I get to
reach an audience
that I've never been
able to reach before.
This song, it's
absolutely perfect.
The lyric that when I first
heard it, I started to cry...
There's that one
lyric where it's like...
