Post by bunniefuu »

the following is a special presentation

of Zoom commemorating the anniversary of

September

11th you might want to watch with your

family

even after a year I still feel sad about

what happened on those days I think 9/11

kind of brought me into reality a little

bit more I don't know I guess I'm just

more aware of things going on in the

world now than I was before and I watch

the news more often and I'm more

involved in current events than I was

before like I never thought about what

was going on in other countries I just

always thought you know about what was

going on in America and it was really

surprising to learn that people could

hate someone else that much I think the

world would be a better place if more

people learned patience patience with

each other's cultures and patience with

each other in general since then I feel

much closer to people because I feel

like we all have something to relate to

and we're all we were all brought

together it didn't really matter about

our race there were so many acts of

kindness right afterwards and I really

worried that those acts of kindness are

fading we just all cared for each other

um it we always always want to say that

the world would be a better place and so

I hope that we can definitely make that

one

day Zoom America's kids

remember funding for this special

program is provided by The Corporation

for Public

Broadcasting the Annie E Casey

Foundation the William T Grant

foundation and by contributions to your

PBS station from viewers like you thank

you

it's been a whole year since the

t*rror1st attacks and a lot of kids are

still thinking about what happened that

day 9911 has changed all of us in some

way some of the changes have been good a

lot of you are helping others or writing

poetry or feeling closer to your friends

and family but some bad stuff is

happening too some of you are being

hassled because of your race or religion

or worrying about another attack in this

special show we want to look back at the

year and talk about how we've been

feeling and remember all the people who

suffered because of that day we also

want to think about what we can do to

make the world a better place so do you

guys remember where you were when you um

heard about the planes hitting the World

Trade Center that memory the morning of

September 11th is so vivid in my mind

like I can remember every single thing

about it and today just sticks out so

much in my mind and I was really scared

and I think the reason that I was scared

came out of not knowing what was going

on and really confusion I think that the

most memorable image was watching the

tower CL collapse live and that's when I

just got the chills and I that's when I

started getting scared and for the rest

of the day when I heard planes or any

sound I would I would start thinking

about it and I thought about where my

parents were and I just started thinking

about everyone I knew in New York and

like I started thinking so much more

about the people around me watching it

on TV I felt like it was happening

worlds away like it it was happening so

far away and that it wasn't happening in

my right in like a different world but

in for the people who were living in

those cities it did happen in their town

and it happened in their world and that

must have been so scary hey folks once

again Le clear the street if you saw the

show we did last year you might remember

Gemma who made cookies for all the

people helping out at the World Trade

Center appreciate thank you thank you

thank you very much Jemma lives in

Tribeca so the planes crashed right down

the street from her we wanted to see how

she's been doing and what's been going

on in her

neighborhood so how have you been since

last year when we saw you well well I've

been all right it was tough for a little

while but mostly things have been

changing around to be good because

everyone's really thinking about each

other and there's a lot of positive

changes this is a journal I made in

November about the World Trade Center

tragedy yeah this is from the end of my

block and there's the base of the twin

towers and that's my old

school um this is some art that I made

after 911 oh wow you drew that yeah this

is a flag I made in wow I think it was

late September it's all made out of

words that I cut out from that time and

that showed Big Ideas like strength and

standing together I also wrote some

stuff we all know that nothing will ever

be the same but normal is going to have

to be redefined life will be out of the

ordinary but we still are here and

together

[Applause]

so like in my neighborhood my part of it

basically normal but as we get closer to

the site there's going to be more

constructions cuz they had to fix

everything and change everything around

this is St Paul's Church where there are

some memorials for people that died and

thanks to people that helped

amazing the peace

creams they're beautiful there's so many

of them

look at the

flag to all those who gave so much at

the site wherever we are we still send

you love respect

thanks this is where the World Trade

Towers were wow it's so hard to believe

because it's so empty that Towers W

stood here it's very changed here it

is oh

wow look at that what's left of the

buildings mhm

over there on that building you can

still see some damage it's amazing so

this was my elementary school building

right here it got totally covered in

Smoke and Ash on

911 right now I'm participating in this

thing called the sunflower project for

New York City and we're planting

thousands of sunflowers to represent all

the people that died and all the people

that helped after

911 only an inch down it's an art

project and a community project

project to me it's a symbol of life and

Rejuvenation and there aren't just facts

there are real feelings behind doing

something like this on for for

[Music]

peace so there's going to be sunflowers

coming up it's going to be beautiful

the dust of September a poem by

Christine of

Ohio the dust of September the dust the

smoke the clouds from the dust of

September the sadness the sorrow the

darkness from the dust of September the

pretty sights are gone the love the

death from the dust of September the

families the lives taken away from the

dust of September our country is sad but

our country still stands in the dust of

September our flag still waves through

the dust of September we will never

break we will stand together through the

dust of September people hurt Hearts

broken but we survive in the dust of

September right after the planes crashed

people rushed to help they gave blood

collected money wrote letters and

cleared the rubble it made a lot of

people feel good about America seeing

people help out like that and of kids

joined in to help too we are only kids

and we felt we needed to do something

third graders at the Red Cedar

Elementary School in East Lansing

Michigan made pins and sold them to

raise money for the Red Cross Relief

Fund and kids from the Francis Marian

Intermediate School in Marian Iowa made

a paper quilt and sent it to kids in New

York City to let them know they were

thinking about them but it hasn't

stopped there since September 11th kids

all over the country have been inspired

to find ways to make their own

communities

stronger students at Sims Middle School

in Pace Florida collected over 2,000

items for a local veterans

hospital

we and kids from the York theater in New

York City showed their appreciation for

their local firefighters by singing them

a

[Music]

song kids are finding lots of cool ways

to volunteer they're raising money

collecting food and cleaning up their

neighborhoods let's meet a 16-year-old

volunteer who's come up with a creative

way to make a difference in his

community hi my name is Clayton I'm here

in Seattle I've been working on this

meal for the past month is a dedication

to all the firefighters that died in

September 11th and to commemorate all

firefighters that have ever died in line

of

duty well even before we started the

meal we met one-on-one with the

firefighters to see how they wanted us

to portray them we're really trying to

show the whole aspect of the fire

starting with the call with the

operator coming up the

ladders using axes saving the babies you

see the smoke and the fire

everywhere I guess in doing this mural

it feels like more or less I'm um doing

something for the fire

department I like giving back to the

community I like enriching communities

making them look better taking a boring

looking type building and turning it

into something that people will stop and

actually look

at and I like expressing my ideas and

feelings through artwork

paint when people look at this mural

they'll see their firefighters doing

what they do

best you always hear about like like

t*rror1st attacks in other countries but

you never think about it in America um

we have an email from Lindsay of

Willowwood Ohio and she said that I

think the events of September 11th have

definitely changed the way I think about

our country I always thought that

nothing bad could happen to us now I

realize that we're all mortal and I'm

afraid like I thought that too like I

always heard about like tragedies

happening in other countries but I

always thought oh America's you know

strong and and nothing will ever happen

to us but things can happen to us and

now I am afraid and like whenever I see

a plane I'm always like you know you're

always it's like always in the

yours you yeah I'm not as afraid as I

was on around that that week of

September 11th except when I go to

certain places or do certain things cuz

I've been to a the airport a couple

times seeing all the security measures

that they have um that reminds me of of

it of the attacks and um that's when I

get a little nervous there's so many

procedures to go through because now

they almost think that anyone could be

involved and it's just like I wish we

didn't have to go through all that and I

had a hockey banquet this year at an

army lab and before we went in they had

to check all of our stuff they had to

look under the car for bombs and

everything and it's like this never

would have happened before and it's

almost just like all these extra steps

need to be taken now do you think it's

good that they're doing that or I mean I

think it helps people feel safer in one

way but then in the other light it's

almost like oh I wish we didn't like

just we didn't need this no one trusts

each other anymore I remember on

September 11th I felt so much confusion

and I didn't know what was happening and

I think with time comes more

understanding and so I'm more I'm not as

afraid as I was then because I

understand the situation more and so I

think that's what really calmed my fears

and about the whole terrorism in other

countries it's all it used to be just

news to me like in the newspaper and

everything but after September 11th you

realized that it happens daily in like

the Middle East and you kind of start

feeling what they feel every day and

that and all the emotions so it not only

connected us to people in America but it

also kind of made us feel what people

feel around the world and it kind of

opened me up to current events and now I

watch the news much more and know much

more about what's going on around the

world and I feel much more part of it

yeah lately we've been thinking a lot

about kids whose parents are in the

military and serving overseas let's meet

one of them hi I'm Dante I'm 13 years

old I live in naval station mport in

Jacksonville Florida my father is a

first class P officer in the Navy he's

been away for 6 months in the Arabian

Sea off the coast of

Afghanistan sometimes I worry about my

father cuz he's in a dangerous place and

I'm scared he'll get

hurt I miss my dad because when he's

here he plays basketball with me he

plays video games and he takes my

brother and I fishing

[Music]

my father's coming home tomorrow and I'm

so interest to see him cuz I haven't

seen him in a long time okay Dad we're

ready for

[Music]

you when my dad first sees me I wonder

if he's going to think I've

grown the name of my fathership is a USS

way city which protects the gfk aircraft

carrier and w youres

I think I see him right there with the

[Applause]

rose oh I'm glad to be

home been a long

time Bo y already got so

big I hope my dad doesn't have to go

back but if he does I know it's for the

good of our country

[Music]

we've been getting emails from kids who

have been having a hard time lately

mostly they're getting picked on because

they're Muslim or Arab to be blamed for

something you didn't do to be hated for

who you are is one of the worst things

ever here's what a girl in New York told

us my name is Shelina and I'm 11 years

old on the morning of September 11th I

was at home sleeping when all of a

sudden my dad came rushing in saying

that two planes had crashed into the

World Trade Center when I heard that

t*rror1st Muslim people did it I was in

shock because I'm a Muslim too one boy

in my class started saying that I was

happy about it and that I had planned

the attacks to be honest I didn't want

to go to school anymore it must be

really hard having your friends pick on

you after you've known each other for

such a long time on the outside you're

probably just laughing along with it but

on the inside you're probably like

you're my friends why would you treat me

differently yeah so if you saw a kid

being picked on for his background what

would you do I'd defend him even if I

how like well it kind of depends if he's

being made just made fun of you I'd

probably just step in you know probably

you know tell tell the people that are

doing it you know lay off he hasn't done

anything to you I have the same opinion

like I try and put the person who's

doing the bullying in the other person's

shoes and you know make them understand

that they're just the same as they are

and they're just a regular kid have you

ever seen that happening and been afraid

to stand up to the person like you

thought people would be like why are you

standing up for them it's really

confusing it's hard cuz what if like

your best friend was making fun of

someone and and you were afraid that if

you stood up for the person who they

were making fun of you lose then you'd

lose your friend yeah but I think it's

important to know your own mind and know

what's right and what's not and even if

it is your best friend if they're doing

something wrong then they should be

stopped or they should and if if they're

your real friend then they'll like

listen to you and like respect you and

say yeah I guess I was doing something

yeah do you guys have any ideas about

why people stereotype I think people

might stereotype out of fear probably

because uh they're they're afraid

something else is going to happen but

they don't want to show their fear so

they take their fear out on someone else

so no one thinks they're really afraid

they actually are I also think

stereotyping might come from people with

insecurities because they think that if

they pick on the minority they'll put

themselves into part of the majority and

be liked by more people and that like

that instinct forces them or causes them

to um take it out on other people but

that's really not right at all yeah you

have to learn how to deal with it though

and like rise above

it being kind to people can make a huge

difference it's really important to find

ways to deal with disagreements without

fighting or hating somebody you stole my

money what are you talking about you

lent me the money you practically gave

me the money in schools across the

country kids are learning new ways to

work out their disagreements it's called

Pure mediation let's meet a pure

mediator who can tell us about it my

name is Dan K and I'm 13 years old and I

live in Vista California near San

Diego do any of you guys want to tell me

what happened a p mediator is someone

who helps people who are having

conflicts me and Noel were discussing

our grade and then Noel doesn't believe

that I can get that good a grade so she

you accuse me of cheating the whole

point of P mediation is to resolve the

conflicts before they escalate to

something else like violence or anything

dangerous like that so how does that

make you feel that she accused you of

cheating it makes me feel bad because um

we are good friends and I don't feel

good when friends like accuse you of

doing something some of the issues kids

come to us with have to do with teasing

cheating on homework sometimes there's

racial issues almost anything so you

more or less think that he didn't really

study for the test at all and he just

copied off of your paper yeah how does

that make you feel like like he can get

away with not doing any of the work and

get the same grade well Timmy did you

cheat I didn't okay so maybe do you

think that you could have um talked to

Timmy maybe or yes when the kids come to

us with the mediation they can have

trust in us and they also feel like we

can relate to them maybe next time we

make a plan to study um I'll keep my

promise and go like study with her next

time I won't accuse you of things you

don't do until I'm 100% sure I know you

didn't do it okay well thanks for coming

to comedian will you guys please shake

hands kids can help get closer to World

Peace by just resolving their conflicts

peacefully I mean just every little bit

helps here are some tips that can help

you solve your conflicts cool down and

take a deep breath and take about 10

seconds to think about what you're going

to say next try to put yourself in

another person's shoes because everybody

has a different perspective no put Downs

don't say anything negative to the other

person because if you do then the

problem just

escalates try to find a win-win solution

and that means a solution that both

people are happy with when I have

conflicts in my life I do use the steps

that we tell the kids to use I really

think about it especially when I'm

getting into fights with my sisters when

they say something I I take deep breath

and I try to think about what has just

been done and then I think about my next

action and it

helps it takes a lot of practice to

think before you speak but once you do

you come out so much better cuz it's

always better to come out looking like

the bigger person an argument don't you

feel so much better about feel so much

better about yourself afterwards if we

can figure out like ways to Talk Amongst

ourselves or you know solve like an

argument we can probably get up to like

a bigger level between countries how do

you think they could resolve like

conflicts like Wars or battles between

countries it's really really hard

because like w*r that's really hard to

solve yeah w*r is just like a gigantic

fight countries and nobody's ever going

to be willing to say okay you know what

fine you're right it's especially

countries they're not like okay yes and

also big arguments like that don't just

deal with

a matter of opinion it deals with money

and power and religion and race and

that's when it gets really tough and a

lot of times countries fight because

they think God is on their God is on

their side and um one big problem is

what happens when two countries both

think that God is on their side it's

like a religion w*r I think that's hard

because religion is really important to

people cuz people don't want to be wrong

in their beliefs and they really believe

it can't really change that person can't

change that I think it's better to just

leave religion out of arguments if

countries look at things on a strictly

political level and a factual level and

leave religion out of it but it's tough

to do when you believe in something

strongly I guess I think leaders of

country sometimes act act a little

immature like they're big little kids

yeah who are fighting over what they

have and give me this give me that

that's mine not yours kind of thing

if I could wish upon a star a poem by

Heather M of

Utah if I could wish upon a star I would

wish to go AAR to a place in my

imagination where there is a peaceful

nation everyone big or small is treated

kindly no doubt at

all thinking about what happened to our

country on September 11th brings up a

lot of feelings we looked for some books

that would help us sort out our emotions

and build a better understanding of what

actually happened on that day here's the

first one the bread winner is a

fictional chapter book written by

Deborah Ellis in this book you meet Pana

a girl who lives in Afghanistan under

Taliban rule she cuts her hair and

dresses as a boy so that she can leave

her house and walk around Cobble freely

to earn money for her family through her

experiences you learn about the strength

required to live life under the

Taliban and here's the next one fire the

Heroic Adventures of the John J Harvey

by Myra colan this is the story of an

old fireboat that is called into action

when New York City was facing the

challenge of September 11th this one

feathers and fools written by me Fox and

illustrated by Nicholas Wilton is a

fable about a pride of peacocks and a

flock of swans through their story you

learn about the importance of looking

past differences to see what we all have

in common we made a list that includes

even more books some of the books are

about serious things that happen to

people some are about how people can

work to get along and some are about

making the world a nicer place you can

see the reviews of these books on the

zoom website at

pbskids.org there are a lot of ways to

express how you feel about something you

can talk about it you can write about it

or you can do what we did we decided to

create a new kind of flag that

represents the world we want to live in

and then you could have different things

for the Stars yeah that would be really

cool so first we talked about what kind

of world that would be and how we would

show that people hands shapes heart then

we looked up pictures of other flags for

inspiration what if we had hands cuffed

in the middle that's good and they have

like the world in the middle a face with

like all different colors that would be

cool really then we all do some designs

I like that idea of the two faces on

either side yeah exactly that's really

good finally

we are ready to start making the

flag all right so now do you want to

draw out the

continents here's how it turned

out really good I think each part is

very important like everyone played a

really important part in making the

whole and I think it's really cool how

we didn't use just one person's design

how we incorporated everyone's into one

big design like a piece of

everyone's um drawing of what we thought

the flag should look like came into the

big flag I think we got just enough

symbolism and simplicity and simplicity

at the same time like everything in it

has meaning um like when we made the

world like when we used a different

piece of cloth to show how um each part

of the world is different but at the

same time it's the same because it's

like all green yeah and I think it's

cool I think it's cool how like the

Earth is in the hands there so it's kind

of like just resting there it's kind of

like peaceful yet it's still a

responsibility every

it's our responsibility and then how

like the people are two different colors

but they have parts are the same in them

like they have the same it's like ying

and yang kind yeah and and they're not

like distinctive colors like it's not

like black and white yeah it's kind of

like showing that everybody's different

not just they cide black and white and

next to the red person there's like a St

silver and it has like a little gold

thing sh**ting out of that and that's

our Wishing Star and it almost looks

like um like the yeah like he's blowing

into the sky world like and all the

stars kind of represent like the

universe beyond the Earth it's cool and

the sun kind of came in at the end we

kind of had a space and we were like

what should we put there and Sun kind of

represents like optimism cuz it's a

sunny day you know like everything's

happy so I think that was a really good

idea to put that at the top and have the

Rays coming down on over the Earth

that's really neat that's

cool what kind of world do you want to

live in design your own flag and send a

picture or video to zoom box 35 Boston
