make their way to their chairs,

Let's meet
the night's first artist.

My name is tamar davis, i'm 35,
and i'm from houston, texas.

Growing up in houston
was amazing.

There was theater,
there was pageants,

There was competitions.

I just would try everything.

At 11 years old,
i joined a group,

And it was called girl's tyme.

That was my first time, like,
recording professionally,

Working with other females.
-Wow.

We traveled,
and then girl's tyme

Became known as destiny's child.

So you were
in the first incarnation

Of what became destiny's child.
-Yes.

Kelly, beyoncé, latavia...
-Uh-huh.

And then it was two dancers,
which is nikki and nina.

-Okay.
-And so it was six of us.

Wow.

Being a part of girl's tyme,

We were typical girls.

We had slumber parties,
we played jokes on each other,

So it was like having
five other sisters.

But then my parents decided
to take me out of the group,

And it was very hard for me.

We weren't ready.

We wanted her
to get an education.
-Right.

And so we pushed her
in that direction.

I remember just crying.

I remember being just mad
at my parents.

Destiny's child becoming big --
it was hard for me

Because i would see them, like,
living out their dreams

And i felt like
maybe i blew my chance

At becoming a recording artist.

But looking back,

I tell my mom and dad
all the time "thank you"

Because it changed my life
for the better.

After high school,

I attended university
of southern california

On a partial scholarship,

And i majored in music business.

I joined a lot of organizations,

But i was really mainly focused
on just school.

After graduating,
i really wanted

To pursue music full time.

I started making a little extra
income by doing some demo work.

And so i started singing
around town.

I started singing background,

But then i ended up meeting
the legendary prince.

I sang for him, and i ended up
singing in his house band.

Prince gave me a surprise

To go and see tyler perry's
"madea goes to jail"

And then i was able to meet
mr. Perry himself.

So from there, prince was like,
"you got to hear her sing."

And i ended up booking a role
in "the marriage counselor."

Mr. Perry kept saying, "you've
got to audition for 'the voice.'

You've got to audition
for 'the voice.'"

Here i am, and i'm so excited.

I think tamar deserves
this opportunity

Because she's paid her dues.

You are a star.

Ahh! [ laughs ]

Tamar: I've had many brushes
with success,

But being able to work with
any of these superstar coaches

Would take me to the next level.

Today, i'm feeling anxious,
and i never feel anxious.

I feel like
i have something to prove.

I don't think i've ever
taken a chance this big.

I always put myself
in the background,

Never coming to the front.

To be in this moment,
i'm gonna give it all i have.

I started traveling with prince

At universal studios hollywood.

Let's meet our next artist.

My name is jessica crosbie.
I'm 21 years old.

I'm from cornwall, england,

But i'm living in atlanta,
georgia.

My mother is american,
and she met my dad.

They fell in love, and then
they moved back to england,

So that was where i grew up.

She was constantly singing,
and she made life really fun.

In primary school, i was in
all the choirs and the musicals.

I picked up guitar
when i was 15,

And i started to write
my own songs,

But i never thought about
playing them to anybody.

We have a local pub, and they
put on an open mic night,

And i went down.

That was the first time
i realized --

If i could do this forever...

I knew that cornwall
was not going to be able

To offer me what i wanted.

My mother's youngest sister
was living in georgia,

So i moved to atlanta.

I'd only ever visited america
on holidays,

So it was definitely
a culture shock.

I started playing
at really small bars,

And everyone there
was so welcoming

And so encouraging,
i ended up staying.

I haven't left yet, so...
[ laughs ]

I came from a very small town,

And musically,
my scene was tiny,

And to come to america and have
this opportunity is amazing.

I would love to work with adam.

Growing up in england,

I listened to maroon 5
all the time.

Their album was
hugely inspirational for me.

For my blind audition,

I'll be singing
"viva la vida" by coldplay.

I'm changing
the arrangement of the song,

So it's true to the melody,

But it's a lot slower
and it's more delicate.

If i could turn a chair,
it would mean

That somebody huge
in this industry

That i admire
believes in me.

It would be world-changing.

My name's justin whisnant,
i'm 28 years old,

And i'm from bearden, oklahoma.

Growing up in bearden --
it was, like, 200 or 300 people.

The town has actually gotten
smaller since i've got older.

Maybe i'm just getting bigger.
I don't really know which one.

My parents separated
early in my childhood,

And i was raised
with my grandparents.

My grandfather was the sound guy
for our church,

So he would bring
all the p.A. System

And we'd set up
in the front yard

And just have
a little family concert.

I feel privileged
to be influenced by that.

I hope you get big.

Me and grandma will
just come drive the bus.

I first started singing
in grade school.

We would travel around,

Sing at different churches
and things like that.

It was a lot of fun.

Right after high school,

I started a job
in the oil field.

I saw that as a smart move
at the time.

I made a good living doing it,
but i worked six days a week.

Hot in the summer,
freezing in the wintertime.

It completely consumed my life.

I'd been juggling trying
to play music at the same time.

My boss gave me an ultimatum --

"you can either work
or you can play music.

You can't do both."

I told him that, you know,
i would just have to do music.

Welcome to moonshiners.

If we ain't friends yet,

We probably will be
by the end of the night.

The name of the band i'm in now
is cold water county.

I've been playing
a lot of shows,

Trying to push it really hard
on social media,

But, i mean, it only works
to a certain extent.

Auditioning for "the voice"
is a huge opportunity for me

'cause it seems like, you know,
the older you get around here,

You start fizzling out,
and i don't want to be that.

It means a lot to me

To be able to sing
in front of four superstars.

I think that everybody
could learn something

From each one of them,
even if that's not your genre.

For my blind audition,

But i'm also enriched
in other things, like r&b, soul.

I take pride in my versatility.

And i've given up stability
financially.

It probably wasn't
the smartest choice,

But i had to do it

i didn't play it safe

My name is jackie lipson,
i'm 25 years old,

And i am from south windsor,
connecticut.

I'm mostly a pop singer,
i'd say, a little bluesy.

I love doing ballads.
I love to belt.

I grew up a very heavy child.

I was about 266 when i was 13.

I had some trouble in school

And being made fun of
and just being left out

And feeling like
i didn't belong anywhere.

Growing up, jackie did have
self-esteem issues.

Yet, at the same time,
she's always had

A really wonderful,
outgoing personality.

I always felt like my outside me
didn't reflect my inside me.

And i think i've always kind of
rejected who i was.

[ voice breaking ]
and, um...

[ sniffles ]

I felt like...
It wasn't good enough.

College was just where
i really started to grow up.

I was in new york city.

I love theater, i love broadway.

I started performing
and being in front of people,

But in order to really have
the confidence

To fke i belonged
in that world,

I needed to make a change.

In total,
i've lost about 103 pounds.

I gained
a whole new self-confidence

And really felt
like i was becoming me.

I try and make some money
singing with cover bands

And doing solo shows,
but it's hard to come by.

I am here for a reason.

This show is about the person.
It's about who you really are.

I am singing "exes and oh's"

It just has so much girl power,
especially.

It's a very empowering song.

I have 90 seconds to prove
to that little girl inside of me

That it does get better.

That's exactly
the proof she needs.

When i was 8 years old,

My mom bought
a christina aguilera album,

And i would like practice
singing, like, "beautiful."

And she was telling her friends
one day, like,

"oh, my god.
He sounds just like christina."

And i'm like, "mom, i'm a boy."
like, "no, i don't."

When i was younger,
i really didn't do much music.

We always played sports.

I think my music career started
when i was in middle school.

My dad encouraged me
to play the trumpet.

My oldest brother,
he played the tuba.

My little brother
played the trumpet.

We're kind of a little
brass section, i guess.

What made you even want
to start singing?

I was screwing around on the bus
one day

On the way back
from band camp,

And my band director, he said,

"you should
really keep doing that

Because you sound really good."

And he said if i,
like, really took it seriously,

I could maybe go somewhere
with it.

After high school,

I went to the university
of michigan school of music.

Taking opera class
was really an experience.

I wish
they had a master's degree

In michael jackson
and justin timberlake.

They are the epitome of music
and performance.

That's just what i want to
be like one day.

It's hard for a kid
in a small town from michigan

To get out to los angeles
and get on the big stage,

So i've been basically
trying to build myself to this

For the last seven years.

I'm gonna starting crying.

You know, you look at people
and you say,

"i could do what they're doing."

It's like you never really get
the chance to go out

And, like, try to do what your
dreams are telling you to do.

And this show's given me
one chance

To like kind of prove to myself

That this is
what i was supposed to do,

That are literally at the top
of the country world,

The r&b world, the pop world,

It's like something
you can't find anywhere else.

About a year and a half now.

My dad had a band in the '70s.

John denver recorded a lot
of his songs.

John saw us and he heard
a song i wrote called

And said,
"can i record that?"

And he said,
"do you got any more songs?"

And i showed him a song called
"take me home country roads,"

And that was his
first chart record.

And i put my own band together
called the starland vocal band.

When i was 5 years old, i heard
my first dixie chicks cd,

And that was it.

I wanted to be a singer.

I've always had a love
for performing.

I started cheerleading
when i was 5 years old,

And i've been
a cheerleading coach

Since i was
a freshman in high school.

a really, really busy life.

I work full time
for a textbook company,

And i am studying to be
a teacher, because i love kids.

But out of everything i do,

Singing is by far
my greatest passion.

My first singing competition
was in middle school.

It really taught me

That i actually love performing
in front of people.

That's when i thought, "well,
maybe, you know, i can do this."

My mom got me into
local competitions.

I joined choir.

Anything that could just
make me a better singer.

I have such an awesome mom

Who allows me to turn our house
into a music sanctuary,

Where i can practice with
my guitar player in one room

And my voice coach
in the other room.

I probably wouldn't be anywhere
without my mom.

I couldn't be more proud
of brittney being here.

Knowing that the example
she's setting to so many girls

Not to give up on what you want,
i think that's awesome.

I need "the voice" because
i think it's the only true show.

They don't see the person.

The decibels in here

What crazy power
you have in your voice.

I mean, your tone is just
spot-on.

But i didn't really get much
of a sense of your vibrato.

So i would love for whoever

To work with you,
because, honestly,

Vibrato on top of
everything that you have already

Makes you a monster.

I think it was probably harder,
what you did,

To not throw in the vibrato,
to just hold the note.

I can agree with that.

My name is matt tedder.

I'm 20 years old,
from weatherford, texas,

But i'm currently living
in nashville, tennessee.

When i was 5 or 6 years old,
my sister and i

Were playing a game
of hide-and-seek,

And i chose to hide
under my parents' bed.

I saw an electric guitar.

Like, i just
fell in love with it.

♪well, i roll and i tumble ♪

♪cried the whole night long ¶

When i first started
playing guitar,

I was, like, listening to
all these blues greats,

And i'll never forget that time
i met b.B. King.

His vocals, his guitar-playing,
it was just so powerful.

And i wanted to emulate that.

but i still had a voice

That was like this high.

[ normal voice ] so i wasn't
too comfortable about singing.

So around 14, i was like,
"i'm gonna try it."

I got a band together
and i began to play,

Like, clubs out in fort worth
and dallas.

And it kind of, like,
started taking off.

When i graduated high school,
i had my mind made up

That i'm gonna make music
my full-time gig.

I just told my parents,
"i want to move to nashville."

I've lived in nashville
for three years now.

I live in a house
with four other roommates.

I live in the basement.

We've kind of turned it into,
like, this little studio.

-Yeah.

I spend most of my time
teaching lessons.

I go out and busk a lot.

And i play as many shows
as i can.

I have no fall-back.

So to have the opportunity
to be on a show

That embraces artistry
is awesome.

I definitely took a leap of
faith to go to nashville,

Leaving my family behind,
leaving friends behind.

But there was always
that something that was

Right beside me,
and that was my music.

Today, i'm singing

By muddy waters.

For a coach to turn around
on this song,

It would be so self-fulfilling

Because i love the blues
so much.

I'm just really excited

To give it all i can
there on that stage.
