I'm 27 years old,
And I'm from philadelphia,
Pennsylvania.
My sister would tell me
That I literally started singing
Before I could talk.
The type of stuff he would sing
Would be the type of stuff
My grandmom had on --
Old-school all the time.
I love my motown --
Love my motown.

My singing outlet growing up
Really was school choir.
I sang a little bit too much
In the house.
My brothers and sisters --
They'd always be like,
"Shut up!"
All throughout the house
'Cause I was singing constantly.
After high school,
My dad was like, "what do you
Want to do with your life?"
And it just
Came right out of my mouth.
I was like, "I want a career
As a professional singer."
My dad's a train conductor.
And he was like,
"You know, I see these guys.
"They sing in the train station.
Maybe you should go down
And give it a shot."
I've been a street performer
For about the last seven years
In philadelphia and new york.

My name is gabriel wolfchild.
I'm 26.
I'm from seattle, washington.
Choosing a name is part
Of the tradition in my family.
Since I was a kid, my parents
Would go to this thing
Called the rainbow gathering,
Which is
An international festival.
Part of the tradition
At the rainbow gathering
Is discovering your true name.
My brother goes by
"Elion truthheart."
My dad goes by
"Blue mountain."
I became wolfchild.
My parents run
A nondenominational church,
Which is a place where people
From all religious practices
Can meet and celebrate.
Growing up,
I was kind of resentful
Towards my alternative parents.
I was like, "oh, my
God. You guys are just
A bunch of hippies."
But, you know,
Now I really see the beauty
In the family they've created.
Their mom, mirayah delamar,
Is a belly dancer from honduras,
So she brought
Her own catholic upbringing.
I'm jewish.
But we shared some spiritual
Understanding of the world.
Gabriel: unfortunately,
Mom couldn't make it out.
She really wants to be here,
Though.
Daly: cool.
When does music come into this
Whole thing for you, gabriel?
I guess it happened
In art school.
I'd be playing guitars
In the hallways.
People would kind of
Give me crap about it.
Why?
They'd be like, you know,
"Why are you at an art school?"
You know,
"You should be playing music."
And I realized,
Maybe they're right.
Gabriel: I do kind of
An indie-folk thing.

On the road quite a bit.
I play in coffee shops.
I play in venues.
Whether I'm selling cds
Or people are just
Donating funds for my cause --
I'm not making a lot of money,

And the acting was great.

To do that since that day.
I would put on shows for myself

Turn on karaoke tracks
And sing as much as I can.
Our whole family's
Jealous of brooke,
Because she has
A really good singing voice,
And we're all proud of her.
I grew up in georgia,
And I just moved to florida.
It's been tough because
All my friends were in georgia.
And, also, I have curly hair,
And it's really humid.

So that's kind of a bummer.
Sadly, there's not
A lot of music programs
At my high school --
I really wish there were.
But I'm trying to get back
Into the swing of things.
So I perform
At an italian restaurant
And some mexican restaurants.
During the day,
I get tipped a little bit,
Like, from people
And their children.
But if I go at night
And I perform,
Then I get really big tips.
I love tips.

My mom is really supportive
Of my music.
We moved to florida
Because she was diagnosed
With lupus about four years ago.
Georgia's winters
Were getting really cold,
And it was getting really hard
For her to function.
We've had a lot going
For the past couple years,

But this has been -- I think it
Just brought our family closer.
She's really strong,
And she keeps her humor
Through everything.

That it would be so awesome
To turn a chair for my mom.

He's a film composer, and we

My parents divorced
When I was 2 or 3 years old,
And my father was always
Financially there for me.
But throughout
My entire childhood,
I wouldn't see him that much.
Music was the reason why
I got through all those years.
I went to
Berklee college of music.
I just finished my first year.
And over the summer,
My father told me
He didn't want to fund
My college experience anymore.
I was just devastated, but I
Didn't want that to be the end.
So I went to downtown burbank
With a sign that said,
"Trying to raise money
For my second year at berklee,"
With this cute, little
Rectangular guitar.
And that's actually
How the opportunity came up.
Someone on "the voice"
Was walking by,
And he dug what I was doing.
Dylan has not let anything
Get in the way,
And I am very proud.
I've definitely
Seen my rough days,
But things
Are really looking up.
And I'm just so grateful
To be here.

Drew:
My name is drew parker.
I'm 23 years old,
And I'm from covington, georgia.
I grew up
In a really small town.
Literally, we have one stoplight
In the little community
That I live in.
As a kid, I wanted to be
A professional baseball player,
But on the weekends,
I was singing in churches
All over the southeast.
It turned into this dream
Of playing music for a living.
One day,
Music may not pay the bills,
And so I've kind of put my music
On the back burner
For a little while,
And I'm currently working
As an x-ray technician.
If I'm getting
An x-ray --
Yes, I would take
Your x-ray,
But, also, I've kind of
Ventured into angiography.
And we do
Interventional procedures,
Like put picc lines in,
Or we also, like, look
For blockages in the heart --
No kidding.
You're like a doctor.
Well, not even close.

I got my passion for serving
People because my brother,
As a kid, had terrible asthma
And was in and out of the
Hospital during my childhood.

I definitely grew up
With family in music.
My grandmother was in a big band
With my grandfather,
And then my mom
And my uncle came along,
And they got in a band together.
When I was 8 years old, my mom
And my uncle asked me to sing
One of my first blues songs,
So it started there.
We got a band together for me.
I am the lead vocalist.
My uncle's a guitarist.
My mom sings.
And since I am 15 years old
And still in school,
On the weekends, I'd go play --
I wouldn't want
To go to the mall all the time
Or watch a movie.
I want to be out there,
Singing onstage with my band.

My name is blaze johnson.
I'm 23 years old.
I'm originally
From nassau, bahamas,
But I currently reside
In columbus, ohio.
If I actually really wanted
To go back into my accent,
[ Bahamian accent ]
I could just do it like that
And say, man,
What's happening, soldier?
[ Normal voice ] but now
I could just switch right back.
My dad wanted to make
A better life for us,
So he moved us to the u.s.,
To columbus, ohio,
And we just started
To really rebuild our lives.
What brought you guys
Here, to the states?
Well, my dad felt a call
In his life
To go back to school
And go to bible college
And then go to ohio state
University to get his degrees.
What was that like -- I mean,
Coming from the bahamas,
Going into columbus, ohio?
It was kind of rough as a kid
Because my dad was a janitor
At the school that I went to.
Kids would make fun of me
In front of my dad
And make fun of my dad
In front of me.
It just used to break
My heart.
That must have been
Hard for you, huh?
I said to him
One day that,
"This is the lowest
We ever been in our life,
But anywhere
From here's up."
The first thing
I tried to do musically
Was audition for a solo
In the school play.
But the fact that I was
This little kid
From a different country --
Everybody was like,
"Oh, we can't have him do this."
I could have the most beautiful
Voice in the world,
But because of where I'm from
And because of what I look like,
They were never
Gonna accept that.
I was like,
"I'm done with music.
Forget it."
And my dad -- he said, "son, be
Better than what I am right now.
Don't stop.
Don't quit."
My family decided
To move back to the bahamas
After I graduated high school,
But I'm currently staying
In columbus
Because there is better
Opportunities in america.
And I live with my pastor
At the rock church columbus,
Where I help lead music.

Bryan: I'm bryan pierce.
I'm 39 years old, and I'm from
Charlotte, north carolina.
Being on "the voice" --
It is an opportunity
To challenge myself
Beyond anything I've ever done.
My dad was military.
My mother and my father
Separated when I was probably 2.
My mom was single,
So I was raised pretty poor.
But it was the cards
That were dealt,
And we played them as we could.
For a number of months,
We went and camped
In regional parks,
Lived in tents.
And I know what it's like
To eat out of a garbage can.
But growing up,
If things weren't so great,
I always knew I could
Go find a place and sing.
Babies have pacifiers.
I have songs, you know?

I did construction for 11 years,
But it wasn't satisfying.
I kind of had a pact
With myself, and I was like,
"One of these days,
I'm gonna pay my bills singing."
So I just kept singing
And kept singing
And started to put
An album together.
And every sunday night,
I hosted karaoke
At a place called snug harbor.
It's a pirate bar.
It's karaoke,
But I get to sing.
I'm starting
The engines up again, you know?
When I was doing construction,
They kind of went dormant.
I took a step in faith
And just leapt,
And now I'm going back
To my original love.
You know, singing is, like,
In my soul.
Being on "the voice"
Is definitely the biggest
Opportunity I've ever had.
