On sundays, when I was a kid,
My parents would have,

Me and my siblings
Would perform.

Music was a big part of it,
But it was also comedy.

In 2006,
I started a country blues band.
My husband, ian,
Played bass guitar.
We moved down to nashville
To work every night
On our music together.
To make ends meet,
I work as a waitress
In a restaurant
That ian works at as a cook.
It's a lot of struggle
To try to be an artist,
And ian has been there
Through every single step.
And he's there for me right now.
I was 14 years old
When I saw him the first time.
He had long hair
And bell bottoms.
And I was like,
"I'm gonna meet that guy."
What's it gonna be like to
Watch her in the blind audition?
I'm just proud of her
For putting her all

What she believes in.
I'm extremely happy with
What she's doing with her life.

With parkinson's disease.
I told him that I was scared.

The first influence of singing
Was my dad and my uncle tony.
My dad grew up
Singing in church,
And now he is a businessman.
I kind of come from
A long line of businessmen.
But uncle tony decided
To get a degree in opera.
He has consistently pushed me
To new heights
As far as music goes.
My junior year of high school,
I joined an a cappella group.
You know, it just brought
A new life to me.
And now the artist
That I want to be is
This new r&b and kind of soul
Mixed with this old,
Sort of jazzy crooner.
I feel like if I have the
Guidance of one of the coaches,
That it could help me with that.

When you hear his voice,
You don't expect it to

She was kind of my inspiration.

In my family

My mother's a stay-at-home mom,
And my father's a contractor.
They can't sing a lick.
I've always loved to sing,
But I didn't really get into it
Until I was 16 years old.
I sang "feliz navidad"
In spanish class.
And that's what started it all.
At 17, I started doing shows
At different bars.
After I graduated high school,
I went on to bluefield state
In the nursing program.
I was actually the first person
In my family to go to college.
And I got a scholarship.

Was a blessing.
You know, we're just a normal,
Average, working family,
And I was just overwhelmed
With pride.
My mom won't be able to come,
But she always thought
That I would go somewhere
With my music.
I never flew before
Until I come out here.
As the plane's taking off,

And I really feel like
This is my one opportunity
To see if I can make it.

My name's treeva gibson.
I'm 16.
I'm from frederick, maryland.
I grew up with two deaf parents,
Which means
I learned sign language
Before I could even speak.
Growing up,
I just liked to listen
To a lot of music on the radio.
And I really like singing.
Even though my parents
Couldn't hear my voice,
They could always understand
Why I wanted to sing,
And they always understood
The emotions I felt.
Now they get to see
What I can do.
My parents are deaf.
Right.
So my sister's gonna be
Interpreting for them
Most of the time.
Okay.
What is it like
To watch your daughter
Pursue a talent
That you can't
Necessarily appreciate?
At first, she thought,
Like, you know,
"It's just play, for fun
Kind of thing, enjoyable,"
Until people started coming up
To her and were like,
"Oh, my god. Your daughter's
Voice is wonderful."
And now she's here.
Treeva: both of my parents
Have master's degrees.
My mom teaches at the maryland
School for the deaf,
And then my father teaches
At the university of pittsburgh.

So it just really goes to show
That you shouldn't judge a book
By its cover.
I'm sorry.
When I was 13, I lost my hearing
In the mid-tone range.
My audiologist assured me that
It's not going to get any worse,
But I still do have to rely
On lip-reading.
When I listen to music,
I can't hear the singer as well,
But I hear all the instruments.
I feel like it gives me a really
Unique perception of music.
Being on "the voice"
Is a really good opportunity
Because this is one of the only
Ways I can make myself be heard.
I think being able
To make a career
Out of something you love
Is the most important thing
You can ever do,
And so, I want the coaches
To hear the passion that I have.
My parents not being able
To hear me was difficult,
But getting a chair turn
Would let them know that
This is something that I can do.

I was
The goat-tying champion.

I'm the male lead vocalist
At the west point band.
Right after katrina,
We lost everything.
Music has been truly a healer.
Daly:
Whatever their backgrounds,
These singers are hoping
To make a name for themselves.
Our next artist
Has already done just that --
Meghan: for many years,
I was a part of a duo
Called steel magnolia.
It was me and my boyfriend josh.
We were struggling musicians
Trying to get a break.
After years of playing
Little bars around nashville,
We ended up signing
A record deal.
My life completely changed.
We immediately went on
A radio tour,
And our first single ended up
Going top 5 on billboard,
Which was...incredible.

We were the opening act
On the brad paisley tour,
Bob seger, and reba.
I opened for blake shelton.
It was pretty crazy.

In 2011,
Because of all the craziness

It was pretty hard.
It affected my entire life.

I started playing guitar
When I was 13.
I think that it was
A bar mitzvah present.
We had a huge record collection
At home.
And I would just kind of go

And the stuff that really
Spoke to me was old blues tunes.
Into my college years,
I got together with a band.
We played folk music.
So, when I was done with school,
I was able to just do that
Full time.
High-five.
Five it.
Oh, yeah.

I met my wife in college.
We've been together 12 years.
She's incredible.
We had my daughter in 2005,
And I found ways
To stay close to home
And stay busy with music.
My wife and I have
Another baby on the way,
And that makes me want to

And I'm really proud of him.
And, um,
I'm his biggest fan.
I definitely think
That the coaches will turn
For my dad
Because he's really unique.

Group called highlands voices.
We won nationals in new york.
We're first in the nation,
Which we worked really hard
To get that tile,
So we're very proud of it.
Bryce, tell me how you got
Introduced to singing.
Previously,
I was really into ballet.
I studied with american
Ballet theatre in new york.
Wow.
But it wasn't really
Until high school
When I realized
That singing was
Really something I wanted to
Pursue seriously.
At nationals, I actually sang
The solo on "happy" by pharrell.
It definitely helped
Boost my confidence levels,
And I feel very ready
To go and do this.
My family has always been
Super supportive of music.
My dad's from scotland,
And he always says,
[Scottish accent] "just remember
That they'll love you."
I can't really do it,
But it's something like that.
[ Scottish accent ] bryce gives
Me a hard time about my voice,
But at the end
Of the day,
It's really bryce's voice
That matters.
I'm so nervous
I'm gonna cry on stage.
I started watching "the voice"
And seeing that it was such a
Good show for aspiring artists,
And these coaches have so much
Experience under their belts.
And I think that they'd
Really be able to help me
Become
A more comfortable performer.

I will have in my life,

It's been really nice,

'Cause there's lots of freedom,
But it is a lot of work.
My two brothers and my dad
Are still doing hay season

When I do my chores,
A lot of times, I start singing,
