will jump start her career.

I'm danica shirey.

I'm 25 years old, from York, Pennsylvania.

I grew up listening to a lot

of Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey,

and I like to sing r&B,
soul, just anything with soul.

Have you had, like, a
breakout moment so far?

Actually, I got the opportunity
to sing for the Apollo...

Wow.

When I was 15. That's amazing.

When I stepped out onto the Apollo stage,

my heart was in my throat.

A lot of people were like, "oh, wow,

it's a little short white girl.
What is this?"

They actually put me in the
adult category, and I won.

What did you do after that?
I came out to California.

I recorded a five-song demo.

Wow. And these are all the sorts of things

that could make one believe

they're really making it in music.

Right.

How difficult has it been since then?

It's been hard for a long time.

I was a daddy's girl growing up,

and I was never nervous
singing my entire life,

and I feel like it was
because I had my dad there.

He was diagnosed with
cancer three years ago.

He ended up passing away.

My dad was pushing so hard for
me my whole life to do music,

but since then, I haven't been performing.

He's here, and I can feel him,
but it's harder without him.

and right now, I am
just a stay-at-home mom.

I love "The Voice."

I have watched it from season one,

and I'm like, "you know
what? I can do this, too."

I can take that time and
be away from my daughter

and know that it's all
gonna turn out awesome.

I want this for danica very badly,

and I know it would make her so happy,

which would make me very happy.

I just really want
to provide a better life

for my daughter, aslin.

I want her to look back
at this day and say,

"hey, my mom did this for
me and I'm proud of her."

I need a coach to believe in me

because I haven't stepped
on a stage in 3 years,

and just go out there and give it my best.

Our next singer hopes to prove
he is ready for his big shot.

My name is Joe kirk.

I'm 17 years old,

and I'm from Nashville, Tennessee.

My parents got divorced when I was 1,

but they stayed close.

When I was about 10 years old,

my mom got a job offer

to be a professional singer at a resort,

and so my whole family,

including my dad, moved to myrtle beach.

They called us the
modern-day partridge family

because all my children

ended up coming up
onstage at different times,

singing different songs together.

Almost every day, I
would get up and sing with her.

I loved it, and so I've
just been singing ever since.

I couldn't have done this without you guys.

Like, thank you.

It means so much for you guys to be here.

We lived in myrtle
beach, South Carolina,

for about six months,

and then after that, my brothers said,

"hey, we're gonna take music
a little bit more seriously

and we're gonna move to Nashville."

I was like, "wow,

they're actually, like, chasing a dream."

And so they packed up and went,

and about a month later,

we packed up our stuff and moved with them.

At first, it was a hard adjustment,

but I didn't want to
live without my brothers.

They're really my inspiration.

We played in several bands
together, Justin and I,

and he would come to
the shows and just watch,

and I'm really, really proud
to see him where he's at.

Ever since he saw "The Voice,"
he's wanted to be on it,

and we get to switch
roles sort of, you know?

We get to come across
country to be with him,

so this is really cool.

I want to make my entire
family proud, especially my mom.

She quit her job as a professional singer

for us to go and pursue our dreams.

I am very proud of Joe.

For him to be realizing this
dream at such a young age,

There's
no greater moment for me.

I'm going to be a senior
in high school this year,

and so far, I've only sang with my family

at school events and fairs.

So being on "The Voice"
would be a huge opportunity.

If a coach were to turn around,

it would mean my biggest dream come true.

Next, a singer who's
LMNG out a family dream.

My name is jimi milligan.

I'm from Philadelphia,
and I'm 35 years old.

I've been a musician since I was 13.

Here, there's Adam.

My father was a singer in an oldies genre.

We would go to family parties,

and him and his brothers
would sit and sing doo-wop,

so I was always influenced
by my dad and his brothers.

I was very close to my dad.

He died when I was 19,

but to be here and LMNG his dream,

I want to make my father proud.

Say high five, daddy.

Been with my wife for
just about eight years now.

We have two children together,

and I have two children with my ex-wife.

Being a father is everything to me.

He's the best father.

Nobody loves his kids more than he does.

I wake up at 6:30 with the babies,

have them till about 2:00 in the afternoon.

I drop them off at my mom's house.

I drive an hour out to my
older son's to do homework.

I get home about 7:00. I go to my gig.

So, my band I've been in for 18 years

is called the big house band.

We play about 250 dates a year.

I can't tell you how many
times I've heard people go,

"you're a big guy. I didn't
think you could sing like that."

I'm like, "what, fat people don't sing?

Come on, man. Of course we do."

This is the show for somebody like me.

They don't see you, they hear your voice,

and hopefully, you know,
I'm gonna sing to a point

where they're gonna say, "hey, man,

let's see what this guy's about."

This is the moment.

If a chair turns for me,

I'll know that all the
hard work that I put in

over the years was worth it.

It's not like I'm some young kid.

The future's now for me.

This is like everything I've ever done

for my whole life boiled
down into 90 seconds.

My first live performance

was a festival in my home
town when I was about 8 or 9.

There was, like, this feeling of joy,

I love school.

I used to play sports,

let the sports thing go
to focus mainly on music.

Not seeing her on the
volleyball court anymore,

that was hard,

but it's worth it because I
know that this is her path.

Well, high-school volleyball's one thing.

I was 16 when I started playing music

in my youth group at church.

In 2011, I started a band named the canes.

We're an indie rock band.

We had a bunch of success in
a really short amount of time,

and then in march of

and be the kind of father
that I wanted to be.

So, you know, we had to hang it up.

I'm a graphic designer,

and so my wife, Nikki, and I

started an event-design company,

and our business is doing really well.

But I also collect Pez dispensers.

A Pez dispenser is a type of...

how you got into singing.

When I was in elementary school,

I joined the choir at my catholic school.

I knew I wanted to be a singer,

but to be in a choir, it
was not something I enjoyed.

I wanted to stand out.

My teachers would tell
me that I'm too different.

I really took that personally,

but I really enjoyed singing
and I didn't want to stop.

At 15 years old, I started
gigging at the local mall.

I had to be able to draw in
people while they were shopping.

It really opened my eyes
to what performing is.

My name is Taylor brashears.

I'm 21 years old,

and I am from Nashville, Tennessee.

I'm a cashier on a food truck
on riffs fine street food,

and it is probably one of the coolest jobs

My brother is in charge of the food truck.

He does everything.

I'm mainly the cashier. I deal with people.

my real passion is music.

When did you start getting into music?

When I was 8 years old.

I saw Sara Watkins play the fiddle,

and I was like, "whoa, this is amazing.

I was like, "I have to do this."

The next day, I got fiddle lessons.

Lots of fiddle lessons. Wow.

I started playing
violin when I was little,

and my mom said that she
started to hear a transition

from strumming on the fiddle
to singing along with songs,

was gonna take the back burner

I started my own band
right out of high school.

I've got three guys backing me up.

I would describe my music as retro country.

Everyone in my band has a job.

We only have very limited time in the week

to practice and play shows,

so right now I have the opportunity

to put everything into my
music and make it something big.

This next artist has faith

that now is his time to make it in music.

I'm Andy cherry. I'm 28 years old.

I'm from Charlotte, north Carolina,

and now I live outside Washington, D.C.

I started singing at church,

and for the first time, I got
to spread my wings musically.

I've been a worship leader at church,

but I also had to work at a coffee shop

to help pay the bills,
and one day, I was there,

and in walks what would be my wife,

and I turned to my co-worker and I said,

"that's the most beautiful
girl I've ever seen in my life."

I never in a million years

would've thought that that Friday morning,

I would've met the love of my life

and would've become his wife.

About two or three months
before we got married,

I got signed to a Christian record deal.

Immediately, we started
working on my album,

and I wanted to please everyone

rather than being true to the vision

that I'd had all along for
what I wanted to create.

At the end of it,

record sales were
disappointing to the label,

and to me, too.

And it was at that time

that the relationship with
my label kind of dissolved.

When I got let go from my record deal,

it was one of the lowest days of my life.

I got a job at a retail store,
and we were really scraping by.

I told him, "you can't quit.

"We've got to just work through this,

"and, you know, we'll come
out... we'll come out smiling

on the other side eventually."

My wife is the one who said,

"you've got to go
audition for 'The Voice.'"

it's inspiring because
she believes in me so much.

The Blind Auditions
now are my second chance

to have a career in music.

If I get a chair to turn today,

it would mean that not gmng
up was the right decision.

there was a little bit of a
lack of control in some areas,

and it was a little bit dramatic for me.

Maybe because I'm so married

I think every time you would
play with the melody at all,

the melody police would come and be like,

"no, no, no, you can't do
that to the song," you know,

'cause you were doing a
little bit of vocal Olympics

on parts where I thought
should be more straight.

But you have a really good voice.

It's like a little
twang and a little twist,

like a little yodel.

When it gets played with to the point

where it starts to become too different,

it can kind of lose you,

so I was a little thrown by that, too.

But million points to you for
coming out here... amazing.

And being who you are and
saying what you have to say

in your own sense of melody
and what you wanted to do.

my personality shine
through what I was doing,

and I guess tipped the scale a little bit

and was not as faithful to the
original as I could've been.

For maiya Sykes, the night's last artist,

music runs in the family.

My mom backup sang for
earth, wind & Fire,

meat loaf, and Neil diamond.

My dad's a saxophone player and a singer,

and also a percussionist.

So, I've come from a very
performance-based family.

Education was important
to my mother especially.

She wanted me to go to one
of these Ivy league schools,

but I didn't know how
we were gonna pay for it.

So she worked three jobs pretty
much all throughout high school

and college to help me.

I went to Yale and I triple
majored in music composition,

political science, and
African-American studies.

She gets into Yale and she
wants to make a life of music?

And that's okay.

Doesn't that make you
want to pull your hair out?

No. No.

I initially went

because I wanted to be a lawyer,

and my mother said,

"you know, do you really
want to go to law school?

Maybe you want to see how
this music thing works out."

How long you been singing?

Let's just say a long time.

Really?

I do a lot of session work.

I do vocal-technique coaching.

I backup sing.

I've sung at a lot of Armenian weddings.

If you've gotten married
in the last five years

in California and you're Armenian,

I probably sang at your wedding.

I am so proud of the work that she does.

Her musicianship is just fantastic.

She is a wonderful human being.

There's no one who can tell you different.

I live with my mom 'cause she lost her job,

so I've kind of been doing
the heavy financial lifting,

and it's so hard for her

because my mom sometimes
thinks that she's my burden,

and she's not, she's my mom.

So, there's that, and now I'm gonna cry.

I've been working for the
better part of two decades

as a professional singer,

but a part of me just said

there's got to be something else.

There are lots of heartbreaking experiences

that you will encounter as
you go on this musical journey,

and this is my one really
big shot to launch myself

in a way that I've never
had the opportunity to do.
