N! Both: LIGHT 'EM UP, UP, UP
Light 'em up, up, up
I'm on fire
Last week on "The voice"...
Next to me oooooooh
...the battle rounds began.
Li-I-I-sten
Ohhh
To the song here in my heart
And our original superstar coaches were blown away...
To the song herethatmis how you battle.
Last week, it was the grammys. It was awesome.
It was a real legitimate battle.
We just got our asses whooped out here.
Whoo!
When that chemistry is happening,
It's like containing lightning.
It's unbelievable. Really wonderful performance.
Both you girls won this battle, to be honest,
Because you did the homework and you dug deep.
...leaving them with the agonizing decision...
THE WINNER... Adam: SOMETIMES PEOPLE HAVE TO GO HOME
That don't deserve to go home, and it breaks your heart.
...of which artist would remain on their team.
Christina's in tears.
Yeah.
Adam, you screwed up so bad.
But the steals gave the most deserving artists
A second chance.
Blake used both his steals to win two showstopping singers.
The other coaches got to be sitting here worried
Knowing that I got two more b*ll*ts for my g*n.
What I love about battles is people can really surprise you.
I loved it.
Giving them another shot. That's what it's all about.
Christina and cee lo each used one steal for their teams.
Cee lo green steals.
This is a great show that gives second chances,
So I'm looking forward to see what she can do in the future.
Only adam has yet to use a steal.
I haven't pushed my button, but I've been very impressed.
And I want to just continue to explore.
Hey, fellas.
Oh, my goodness!
Tonight, our superstar coaches
Have recruited some of the biggest names in music
To help prepare their teams
For a head-to-head vocal battle that only one can win.
This guy's gonna be the best coach
You could possibly have for this tune 'cause it's his song.
Battle rounds are really crucial.
You only have so many spots on your team,
And it just comes down to who outperforms the other.
Everything is on the line.
This could be my last chance.
This battle -- it's life or death.
One of us could go home.
I've come this far,
And it would be sad for it to end.
I'm going to leave everything that I have onstage.
I'm not ready to go home yet.
See ya. Good luck, man. Good luck.
The battle rounds continue right now.
While our coaches get settled...
...let's meet christina's first battle pair of the night.
Versus 27-year-old michael lynch from chicago, illinois.
Before coming to "The voice," Josh logan was balancing
Performing six nights a week with being a dad.
If I can turn a chair or two,
I could really support myself and my son.
And it feels like I am just too close to love you
His soulful performance of "Too close"
Earned him three button pushes.
I am interested in you because you would be different for me.
I think I got to go with christina. Oh!
Landscaper michael lynch came to the blind auditions
Hoping his latin flavor would win over a coach.
I moved to mexico city,
And I actually use music as a way to learn the language.
Bailamos
His performance of "Bailamos" Won over three coaches,
And he ultimately went with team christina.
Te quiero,ohh, oh, oh
Hello, hello.
Hey.
This is the fabulous ed sheeran.
Nice to meet you. When I walked in, I saw ed.
I've always been a big fan of his.
I know that he's worked with artists
Such as taylor swift and one direction.
I definitely had the butterflies.
Michael, even though I know
That you came on the show doing "Bailamos"
And you have this whole passion for latin music -- yeah.
We got our little salsa moment. Exactly.
It was really fun. That was awesome.
That song actually is very rock/pop driven.
Josh, I know that you can tap into that zone, too --
Kind of like your dips and slides.
These guys have a lot of soul to their voice,
AND I ACTUALLY THOUGHT MAROON 5's "HARDER TO BREATHE"
Would be a perfect fit for both of them
To be able to explore and bring their own energy to the table.
How dare you say that my behavior's unacceptable
So condescending...
Josh is very, very suited to this song.
He has just a very gravelly, yet smooth voice.
You'll understand what I mean when I say
There's no way we're gonna give up
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
I'm not -- yeah. Keep going.
Monster that lives in her dreams
It's a fantastic song.
It's a bit of a mouthful, though.
It's a wordy song for sure.
I'm a little shaky with lyrics
Just because this is one of the maroon 5 songs
That I'm not as familiar with.
I need to just listen to it over and over,
Practice it, and perfect it.
Don't follow the cover. Just make it your own.
Okay. You don't have to stick to all the ad libs
'cause everything is da, da, da, da, da, da.
The way this song's lyrical structure is set up
Is extremely jam-packed.
What you are doing is screwing things up inside my head
You should know...
These guys definitely have that capability,
But I also wanted to give them the freedom
To do their own thing.
The song is a perfect setup for...
The other person goes...
Whoa
Okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah
It's like little answer-back things.
You guys will do your own things with that idea.
It's gonna be fun.
After taking in their feedback,
Josh and michael meet with christina and ed
To continue working on their performance.
So condescending, unnecessarily critical
You want to stay, but you know very well I want you gone
Not fit to even tread the ground that I am walking on 148 00:05: 00:05:39,071
Little girl cries in the face 149 00:05: 00:05:41,573 Of a monster that lives in her dreams
Michael, play with me. Come on.
Is there anyone out there I'm an audience!
'cause it's getting harder and harder to breathe
Whoo!
What you are doing is...
Both josh and michael were just kind of laying back,
And I wanted to get their attention,
But they were kind of giving me nothing,
So I was getting frustrated with these guys.
You kept putting your eyes on the paper,
And I'd stop being audience
'cause I realize they can't look at me
Because they don't quite know all the lyrics yet.
Do you know what I actually think you do know the lyrics.
I think if we took the lyrics away from you, you'd know it.
I've never been much of a super performance-strong guy,
So christina and ed are pushing me out of my comfort zone,
And I want to be pushed.
I didn't come here to just go through the motions
And do everything I do back home.
I came here to grow.
Screwing things up inside my head
Should know better, you never listen to what I said
Coming in to band rehearsal today,
I still didn't know all the lyrics to the song,
So definitely know I have my work cut out for me.
I want her to have no choice but to pick me as the winner.
It's getting harder and harder to bre-e-athe
Mm-mm-mm-mm.
You're in battles. You have to push yourselves.
You know, you got the guy sitting in front of you
That wrote the song -- impress him.
This is a really well-written, clever song.
Adam did a good job, so find a connection to it. For sure.
This is a pissed-off guy singing this, you know
You need to kick its a*s a little bit.
I wouldn't ask you to give it if I didn't think you had it,
So do it.
Done. Thank you, guys. Thank you.
I know that they have the potential
To do leaps and bounds with this song.
Hopefully, they'll take it to that level.
It's the night of the battle,
And josh and michael make their way to the stage.
You guys have this. I know you do.
It's just, like, a matter of, like,
A little bit of nerves, even in rehearsal, right
Don't even let them see it in your face.
The audience is gonna be there for you.
They want to be entertained. Just let it happen.
Yeah. Yeah.
I'm just trying to remain focused and calm.
If I don't win this battle, it's back to the grind.
It's back to the bars.
I need to be able to ease my nerves
And focus on the task at hand.
For me, the key to winning this battle
Is definitely gonna be how I deliver the song in my performance.
This has been my dream since I can't even remember.
I'm ready to just get up there and sing.
Entering from team christina,
It's the soulful vocalist and single dad, josh logan...
...taking on the landscaper, michael lynch.
This battle begins right now.
How dare you say that my behavior's unacceptable 217 00:08: 00:08:38,316 So condescending, unnecessarily critical 218 00:08: 00:08:41,520 I have the tendency of
getting very physical 219 00:08: 00:08:45,156 So watch your step, 'cause if I do you'll need a miracle 220 00:08: 00:08:48,126 You drain me dry and make me wonder why I'm even here
This double vision I was seeing is finally clear
You want to stay, but you know very well I want you gone
Not even fit to tread the ground that I am walking on
When it gets cold outside and you
got nobody to love 225 00:09: 00:09:04,276 Whoa
You'll understand what I mean when I say 227 00:09: 00:09:08,613
There's no way we're gonna give up 228 00:09: 00:09:10,849 Yeah, yeah, yeah
And like a little girl cries in the face Cries in the face
Of a monster that lives in her dreams
Is there anyone out there
'cause it's getting harder and harder to breathe
What you are doing is screwing things up inside my head
You should know better, you never listened to what I said
Clutching your pillow and writhing in a naked sweat 237 00:09: 00:09:35,273
Hoping somebody, someday, will do you like I did
Oh!
When it gets cold outside and you got nobody to love
Whoa
You'll understand what I mean when I say Mean when I say
There's no way we're gonna give up
Like a little girl cries in the face
Of a monster that lives in her dreams
Yeah
Is there anyone out there
'cause it's getting harder and harder to breathe
Does it k*ll
Does it burn
Is it painful to learn
That it's me who has all the control
Hey!
Does it thrill Does it sting
When you feel what I bring
And you wish that you had me to h*-o-o-o-ld
Ooooh, yeah
When it gets cold outside
And you got nobody to love
You got nobody to love
You'll understand what I mean when I say
There's no way we're gonna give up
There's no way, there's no way, yeah 264 00:10: 00:10:30,929
Like a little girl cries in the face
Of a monster that lives in her dreams
Hey, hey
Is there anyone out there
'cause it's getting harder and harder to breathe
Yeah
Is there anyone out there
'cause it's getting harder and harder to breathe
Ooooh
That's how you do it! Team christina battling!
Josh and michael, for the right to move on to the knockouts.
Wow. That was so much fun.
Adam had a big smile on his face. We'll get to him in a second.
THAT WAS AWESOME. Christina:
Christina, great, great battle. Thanks.
Cee lo green, what did you think
I enjoyed both of your guys' confidence, man.
You performed so well, man, and it was very effortless.
It was really cool -- the way that adam is.
I think, josh, I mean, you almost sound identical to him,
And that's a compliment right there.
Thank you so much, man. Thanks.
And also you, michael, too.
I like that unassuming energy about you. You know what I mean
Like, they don't always see you coming,
But you got a lot of oomph behind your vocal performance,
So great job, both you guys. Thank you.
Blake shelton, what did you think
Yeah, I was really into that.
That was full energy,
And it sure sounds like adam's influence.
He has a more masculine version of my voice, though.
Yeah. And image.
Uh...
And, michael, I think it's easy
To get wrapped up in josh being overpowering,
But I think he just probably naturally has
A bigger voice, you know
I thought you both gave 110% up there,
And I don't think you got a wrong decision
THAT YOU CAN MAKE HERE. Christina: THAT'S TRUE.
Everybody wanting to know what adam thought about that.
It looked like you enjoyed it.
Yeah, this is my song.
It's my baby, especially this one.
This is actually our first song that ever became a hit.
It's very rhythmic.
There's a lot of syllables, and it's really easy to screw it up.
And I'm telling you, it was really fun,
And you guys did an amazing job.
Michael, josh did overpower you a little bit.
He's probably an intimidating voice to sing with
'cause he definitely, like, has a lot of command.
He's just very polished.
I don't think that there's anything negative
I can say about either one of you.
You both did a great job,
But, yeah, I would tend to say josh for me.
Thank you, adam.
And now, christina, you, of course, have the final decision.
First of all, that's a huge compliment
Coming from the man himself who wrote the song.
He's a perfectionist kind of a singer.
You're very accurate with your pitch, your notes,
And your choices, and delivery.
Ooh, shower with compliments over to adam today.
You guys are making me feel good today.
Adam wrote it from a really, like,
Pissed-off, emotional place.
So, you know, you have to mean what you say
And meet it rhythmically, and not run out of breath,
Because the song is written in a way
Where rhythm is crucial.
So, for adam to say that you guys did a great job,
I couldn't agree more.
You guys really stepped up to the plate.
You made it your own.
In moving forward, I have made my decision.
Michael, I adore you.
You're so talented.
Josh, you're amazing.
The way you put your own spin on ad libs and your soul,
It's no joke.
You know, you both are very talented.
The winner of this battle is...
...josh.
Josh, winner in the battle rounds,
Moves on to the knockouts, representing team christina.
Congratulations.
Nice job, josh.
Thanks, sweetheart. Mwah!
It's such a trip to have that much good, positive feedback
From all those amazing musicians.
What do you think Oh.
I'm stoked, man.
I'm ready to go to them knockouts.
Let's do this.
Coaches, let me remind you
Michael lynch is available to steal.
Michael, anything that you want to say to christina
I just want to say
This has been an unbelievable experience for me,
So thank you for the opportunity and believing in me.
You did it. You did it on your own.
Ladies and gentlemen, a big thank you to michael lynch.
Thanks, michael.
I thought I held my own with josh,
But at the same time, I know that if it wasn't in the cards,
Then it's not what was supposed to happen.
I'm just gonna have to keep working hard.
Give me a hug. That was so sweet. It's a dope song.
Thank you. Of course.
That was really nice. Oh, stop it.
Josh and michael -- I praise what they did.
Like, I'm gonna be the most critical
Because I wrote that song.
Josh tended to overpower michael,
So I had to keep my hands off my button there.
I'm waiting for one of these guys
To make the wrong decision so I can sweep it up.
Coming up...
I'm radioactive
...an unforgettable night of battles...
Take that money, watch it burn
Sink in the river, the lessons I've learned Wow.
...that has our coaches riled up...
Ooooooooh
Yeah!
...and ready to steal.
Oh, we got a steal! Yes.
Yes!
Daly: WELCOME BACK TO THE BATTLE ROUNDS.
Let's check in with cee lo and his adviser,
Grammy award-winning r&b artist miguel.
I think you're great.
I can name just maybe, like, a few individuals
Who I think have genuinely pushed the art form forward.
I just want to give you that compliment, brother.
I appreciate it. Got a lot of love for you.
Here's a look at cee lo's first battle pair of the night.
Versus 16-year-old juhi from franklin, tennessee.
George horga jr. Left his close romanian family
To pursue his love of music.
My parents came here not even knowing english.
They told me, "We'll give you one year to go chase your dream."
A year later, slowly,
They started to kind of believe with me.
Treasure
That is what you are
He took a step towards his dream
When cee lo's chair turned.
The energy from the audience, it doesn't lie.
I say, "Okay, I hear potential."
Georgie, welcome.
High-school student juhi came to "The voice"
Wondering if she had what it takes to make it in music.
Education's important to me.
I'm leaning more towards aerospace engineering
Or, like, computer science,
But, at the same time, I am focused on doing music.
I said to release me
She took the stage and got two coaches to turn.
Let me just tell you how wonderfully unique your voice sound.
Like, that was really impressive.
Cee lo.
Yo, yo. Yo. What up, guys
What up, guys
Yay!
What up, dude Respect, man.
I'm definitely a fan of miguel.
Literally, like, my jaw was dropped.
I heard you live once, and you slayed it, dude.
Cool, thanks, man. Appreciate that.
Honestly, man, you're awesome.
I respect him so much as a vocalist and as a musician.
That's the level I want to be on.
I really like the song choice, man.
Me too. It's got a lot of energy.
It's young, it's fresh,
And that's exactly what I want you guys to be --
Young, fresh, and hot right now.
The song that I selected for george and juhi
IS "THE BEST I'VE EVER HAD" BY GAVIN DeGRAW.
I paired them together
Because they both have soul and pop sensibilities.
Melt antarctica, savin' africa
I failed algebra, and I miss you sometimes
I think this song allows me to showcase my voice.
One of my strengths is my style.
Hey, oklahoma
So I just want to have fun with it.
Don't even know ya I think I, oh, oh
Hey, alabama
Hey, california
I think I love you
Don't even know ya
Juhi has a really unique tone.
She's only 16 years old.
She jumps up and down the scale a lot.
The girl can sing her face off.
You're my neon gypsy, my desert rain
George reminded me of the justin timberlakes,
The bruno marses.
You know, he's kind of got, like, a grit to his voice.
You're the best I've ever had
And I -- sorry, should be me.
It's up there.
You can hit that note clean as long as you don't overthink it.
Yeah.
This song is at the top of my register,
So I'm reaching for everything.
It's challenging.
I would lie if I was saying
It wasn't worrying me just a little bit
'cause I know I'm just gonna have to have that perfect vocal
To be able to just reach up there for those notes.
There's a lot of character
That she's infusing in her vocal style.
Just make sure you pick those moments
Where your personality stands out.
Think about that.
You know, something special that you can do
To compete with this girl.
Cee lo told me to find my own moments in the song
Where I can take control and show what I can do
To really make it a competition.
With their battle near,
George and juhi have one last rehearsal
With cee lo and miguel.
Hey, massachusetts
Hey, minnesota
I think I love you
But I don't even know ya
Hey, carolina hey, yeah
I think I love you whoo
Don't even know ya hey!
That was really good.
George, you're like, Don't even know ya
Hey! Yeah.
All right yeah.
Felt very natural and very, just, real. Yeah.
So, right off the bat,
George really got it going, like, seriously.
I need to step up my game, that's for sure.
That's impressive.
Like, you're doing a really good job on that big note.
I was a little defeated yesterday.
I've learned just to really compete.
Being just toe-to-toe will make it
Actually a tough decision for cee lo.
Juhi, I definitely want you to enunciate.
Yeah, I get that a lot.
Try and find that balance between your style
And making sure that we understand the words.
Sometimes, you forget to breathe.
You know what I mean Like, things become inaudible.
We don't want that. I got you.
I love juhi because she's got a very unique voice.
She just needs to pick her spots where she's clear,
But george, he's grown an awful lot in a short amount of time.
You know, that's just to be commended.
What's gonna sell this song is a lot of personality.
YOU GOT TO REALLY IDENTIFY
WITH THE AUDIENCE, YOU KNOW George: YEAH.
Those two very talented kids are making it tough for me,
And I got to make a tough decision, but I got to make it.
Coming up,
Two of cee lo's youngest artists go head-to-head.
You're the best I ever had
And later... I'm waking up
I feel it in my bones
...team adam rocks the stage
In an electrifying battle that's a must-see.
Welcome to the new age
To the new age
Oh, oh, oh, oh
RED'S MY COLOR. Daly: WELCOME BACK TO THE BATTLE ROUNDS.
The time to battle has come for george and juhi,
But only one will remain on team cee lo.
I've been, like, nervous all day.
You don't seem like the nervous type. Oh, yeah, I am.
This is all you got to do --
Be yourself, be strong, be confident, make us proud.
Thank you. All right.
Thanks, man. I really appreciate it. We'll do you proud.
Yeah.
George has been more focused on music.
He's not going to college.
So, in order to win this battle,
I just really need to prove to people
That I can be equally as focused.
My parents came to america to find the american dream.
They made it happen for themselves,
But more than that, they've given it to me,
So if I don't make it, I have to wrap it up and take it home.
If I don't get cut,
It just gives me another opportunity in my music career
Just to kind of breathe and relax
And then take on the next opportunity, so it's huge.
Entering the stage from team cee lo,
The pop singer george horga jr...
...versus the 16-year-old high-school student, juhi.
Let the battle begin.
Melt antarctica, savin' africa
I failed algebra, and I miss you sometimes 661 00:27: 00:27:32,650
We're at w*r again, save the world again
You can all join in, but you can't smoke inside
You said
"Take me home, I can't stand this place
"'cause there's too many hipsters
And I just can't relate"
You're my neon gypsy, my desert rain
You're my helter-skelter, oh, how can I explain
That you're the best I've ever had
And I
Try not to get stuck in my head
And I
Read that soda kills you and jesus saves
He's on the bathroom wall where I saw your name
You're the best I ever had
I won't be the same
Hey, west virginia
Hey, north dakota
I think I love you
But I don't even know ya
Hey, massachusetts
Hey, minnesota
I think I love you, don't even know ya
Hey, carolina hey, carolina
Hey, oklahoma hey, oklahoma
I think I love you
Don't even know ya
Hey, alabama
Whoo-o-o-o hey, california
Let's go! I think I love you, don't even know ya
You're the best I ever had
You're the best I ever had
Trying not to get stuck in my head
Not to get stuck in my head
Saw the longest sign on the interstate
Saying, "Find someone before it gets too late"
Best I ever had
I won't be the same
Ooooooh
Yea-a-a-h
I won't be the same
Give it up for juhi and george,
Battling for team cee lo!
All right, team cee lo, with an awesome battle there.
Let's talk to your fellow coaches
And get some of their thoughts.
Adam, we'll start with you.
Okay, that was interesting,
'cause, george, you had a bad note.
I know you know,
So we might as well just get it out in the open.
Yeah.
But then, rather than crumble and get nervous
And freak out and sing terribly,
You sang really well after that,
Which shows your resilience, and that's a good thing.
Juhi. Juju.
YOU HAVE A GREAT VOICE. Juhi: THANK YOU.
I think that I would worry that sometimes
You can get backed into a corner when you're so specific,
But it seems like you have more range
Than I'd initially given you credit for,
So that was my fault. Thank you.
Think that there's work to be done on both sides.
This comes down to the kind of raw materials
That cee lo's working with and what he wants to do,
'cause I think that there's potential.
But it's a tough choice 'cause you're both really different.
Thank you, adam. Blake.
I'll start with george. Adam's right.
You hear a note like that or -- or a break, it sucks.
Good thing for you is I'm not your coach,
And he knows a lot more about you and what you do than I do.
That's why we have coaches on this show and not judges,
'cause he knows ultimately where he's gonna take you.
Juju. Is that -- is that what you call her -- juju
Yeah, jujubes. Yeah, I like that.
She sounds like a rock-'n'-roll girl.
She sounds pop,
And there's something that really jumps out at me.
Juju is only 16 years old.
That is astounding...
Thank you. ...to be that -- that accomplished as a vocalist.
Thank you.
I think one of my biggest regrets
Is not having pushed my button for you in the blind auditions,
So if I was picking, I would go with juju on -- on this one.
Thank you.
Thank you, blake. Christina.
I think both of you brought that song alive.
It's not like it was a challenge for you that you couldn't meet,
And you both had energy.
I did turn my chair around for you,
And unfortunately for me, you went with cee lo,
But I think you have an interesting vibrato,
Cool inflections.
I liked how you kind of threw certain lines away
And was like, "Ooh!"
Like, you know, you kind of had character within your vocals,
Which is important
Because it makes you stand out as a unique vocalist.
And, george, you know, you brought the energy.
I know that coming into this, you probably had extra nerves
'cause you knew who you were going up against,
And she's a talented singer, but so are you, man.
You were good.
Thank you, coach christina.
Cee lo green, you have the final decision.
Give us some thoughts.
I enjoyed the performance,
And I'll tell you why I picked this song,
Because it's very young.
I thought it would bring a lot of energy,
And it's an uphill climb because it's a --
It's fast and, you know, it's energetic,
And both of you guys' personalities
Kind of reminded me of the record.
I just want to let you guys know
A little bit about both of them,
You know, as very young artists.
Like ju, it's like, she's 16 years old
And very brilliant,
And she's like a young einstein of some sort, you know
George's story -- the guy came out here
To either make something happen for himself or come back,
But he's been here for the last three years,
And have come here with -- you know, with a brave heart
To pursue a passion.
Cee lo, tough decision here, but I'm sorry.
Who is the winner of this battle
I want to commend, you know, and support someone
Who seemingly, you know, wants to solely do this,
As if there's no plan "B."
Do you know what I'm saying
With those things considered,
The winner of this battle is...
George.
George horga jr. Is moving on
To the knockout rounds representing team cee lo.
Respect, man.
I thought I lost.
Performance-wise, juhi k*lled it.
The fact that cee lo saw that struggle as a musician,
I respect that so much.
Good job, son.
I'm on top of the world.
Let me remind you that juhi is available to steal.
Go ahead, cee lo.
Listen, ju, try to brave through this opportunity.
You do not stop here.
I mean, like, I know that you are dynamic enough
To do the bold things you were --
We got a steal! Look at that!
Adam levine comes in and swoops juhi up.
Yes! And she just got stolen!
Oh, my god! Aah!
Adam levine, why did you want to steal her
I'm sorry.
I couldn't believe it.
I didn't know that he was gonna let you go.
I-I was assuming you were gonna be gone.
All of a sudden, here you were,
And here I was with a steal, and I thought, "Holy crap."
I think -- listen --
Thank you so much. You don't even know.
That was all I can say.
I think that we have work to do, but gosh, you're 16, man.
You're already so good.
I just kind of won the lottery by grabbing you for my team.
Thank you so much.
Why don't you go give your new coach a hug
I think that juhi is gonna surprise us
With her desire to think outside of the box.
Congrats. We're gonna do this.
And she's super young, so potential, potential, potential.
Competing against her former coach, cee lo green.
Awesome.
My mind's blown.
Me and adam have similar music tastes,
And I think he can really teach me stuff.
Oh, my god. I can't believe that happened. Aah.
ARE YOU SHOCKED BY THAT Christina: HUH
Are you shocked by him letting her go Yeah.
That shocked me.
Georgie and juju.
This is really bittersweet,
But I'm gonna prove anything's possible with georgie.
He's completely committed.
Coming up...
Try not showing all your cards right in the beginning
So that when it comes out,
That it's more of a "Whoa," You know
YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT IT'S LIKE
Daly: TEAM BLAKE TURNS CHER'S ADVICE INTO AN EPIC BATTLE...
Baby, you don't know what it's like
Yeah, yeah yeah!
...leaving their coach with a difficult decision.
GLADE. Daly: WELCOME BACK TO THE BATTLE ROUNDS.
Let's head over to blake and his adviser,
Grammy award-winning superstar, cher.
Here's how his first battle pair of the night matches up.
Versus 24-year-old brian pounds from austin, texas.
Former college baseball player brian
Gave up sports to pursue his love of music.
Rock me, mama, like a southbound train
His performance impressed both blake and cee lo.
Where you from, man
I was born in enid, oklahoma, so oklahoma boys.
Ah.
And cee lo is toast.
I got to keep it country.
I got to go with blake.
Singer/songwriter austin came to "The voice"
Hoping to honor his father's memory.
When I was 16 years old, my father took his own life.
Unfortunately, he didn't know
How loved he was by his family and friends.
I'm gonna throw on his guitar.
I'm gonna go out there and sing
Because I know that this is what I'm meant to do.
And be a simple
His meaningful rendition of "Simple man"
Turned two chairs, and he went with his gut.
Hey, blake, I'd like to be on your team, man.
Whoa!
What's up
Oh, my goodness!
This is cher, your adviser.
When I walked in the room today,
I was kind of a little shocked and stunned.
Hi, how are you. My name is austin. I'm good.
I actually, like, am a huge cher fan.
I could not believe it.
As if there wasn't enough pressure, huh
Right.
We have to sing after all this. That's...
So, you guys wondering why I paired you together
Absolutely. Yeah.
It's the denim.
Wait a minute. I got denim at my house, okay
Just let me run home.
I paired austin and brian together
Because they both have this edgy sound,
But they also have the ability to be vulnerable,
And so I gave them "To love somebody" By the bee gees,
Which may seem like an odd song
To give a couple of country singers,
But I know that song originally
Because hank williams jr. Recorded it.
It's cross genre, and I'm gonna see
Which one can step out and really sell this song.
Baby, you don't know what it's like to love somebody
Dang.
To love...
Watching cher and blake gushing over austin at certain points,
It does kind of tinge you a little bit.
He's an incredible force to be reckoned with.
The way I love you
You're right.
One thing I wanted you to think about
Was not showing all your cards right in the beginning.
I know you rely a lot on your power. I do.
I do the same thing.
Took me a long time to not just use my power
Because it was there.
Really try to start a little bit slower
So that when it all comes out,
That it's more of a "Whoa."
Yeah, definitely less is more until you get
Into those big powerful moments of the song. Right.
Austin's just this powerful, loud singer, you know,
But his weakness is that he comes right out of the gate
As that vocalist.
Think if he can master that, he'll be hard to beat.
There's a light
A certain kind of light
That never shone on me
Hey, brian, there's one thing that austin does.
He gets completely lost in the song.
I think it's important that you find a way
To kind of get lost in the moment.
I definitely need to work on really connecting with the song.
Right now, it's just notes and melodies.
You have to think, "This is it.
I can just go... ba*ls to the wall."
We can accept that.
Brian has to not be aware of himself so much.
It's too cerebral.
The moment you start to judge how you're doing, you're done.
With the battle approaching,
Austin and brian join blake and cher
For one final rehearsal.
Baby, you don't know what it's like
To love somebody
To love somebody
The way I love you
I have a problem,
Because I could not hear austin.
The sound got too thin.
It was better for you, but it wasn't great for you.
Okay.
I play a lot of coffeehouses,
So I use my voice to fill large spaces without a microphone,
And for this, it's really important
That I-I stay on the microphone,
And that's definitely different for me.
I'd also like the opportunity
To maybe try playing it without the guitar.
Abs-absolutely. That's totally your call. Cool.
It really feels right to sing without a guitar
For this performance.
Everybody say
I really just want to concentrate on my voice,
Which is different because I've never really done that before.
Yeah, baby, you don't know what it's like
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Brian -- he's good all the way through,
But sometimes he's great.
And it would be good for him as a singer to stretch himself,
And so I feel like he still has to work on that.
You're more obvious intensity
'cause you do a lot with your body when you're doing it,
And this whole -- this thing, too, you use that a lot.
A guy that I worked with, billy mann,
He's a producer of p!Nk, and he said --
'cause I wasn't hitting it.
I was, like, going right under,
And he said, "Cher, just clench your fist
When you go to hit that note," And I did and it worked.
When cher talks, you listen.
All of her notes are just so spot-on.
On the harmony, you still need to get closer
Because you're higher, and it's a strong place for him.
Yeah, 'cause that's the only time that your voice
Can get just a little bit thinner
Is when you go real high. Right.
There's so much riding on this battle,
And it's gonna be very important for me
To just focus on what I have to do.
Awesome, man.
I really regret that I paired austin and brian together.
Thank you. Thank you. Sounds amazing.
I'm going, "What in the hell am I gonna do"
They're both great. It's hard.
Coming up, austin and brian face off
In a battle to stay on team blake...
To do each and every little thing
...leaving the other coaches impressed. Yeah!
IT REALLY SOUNDED -- Adam: IT SOUNDED GREAT.
You know how painful it
is for me to give you a compliment. I know.
I have to compliment you on this.
But will it be enough for a steal
Welcome back to the battle rounds.
Competing in the ring from team blake,
The aspiring country folk artist singing for his dad,
Austin jenckes...
...and the former baseball player
Pursuing his singing dreams, brian pounds.
This battle starts right now.
There is a light
A certain kind of light
That never shone on me
I want my whole life to be
Lived with you
Lived with you
There is a way
That everybody say
To do each and every little thing 1098 00:48: 00:48:55,331 Oh,
but what does it bring 1099 00:48: 00:48:58,234 If I ain't got you
If I ain't got you
Oh yeah
You don't know what it's like
You don't know what it's like
To love somebody
To love somebody
The way I love you
Well, I am a man
Yeah, yeah
Can't you see what I am
I live and I breathe for you
Yeah, yeah
Oh, but what does it do
If I ain't got you
If I ain't got you Whoo!
Ye-e-e-e-ah
You don't know what it's like
Baby, you don't know what it's li-I-ke
To love somebody
To love somebody
The way I love you
To love somebody, yeah, yeah
To love somebody
The way I love you
Yeah!
Nice job!
All right, coach blake.
We'll give you a second to take all that in.
Christina, what did you think
I really enjoyed that.
You guys both brought it.
Each one of you had some really, really great moments.
I'm gonna go from what I was moved by
On a more emotional level, and there was just something
That I connected more with austin, in this case.
Thank you.
Thank you, christina. Cee lo green.
Brian, I know that your voice is strong because it's apparent.
You know what I mean Like, you know, I can hear it.
I know that you have a great voice,
But a couple of moments that would've needed
To just kind of connect did not.
And, austin, like, you have a very effortless approach
To your singing style, and I just think it's a comfort.
You know who you are, you know
So, that I can appreciate, you know,
In terms of person and personality,
But great job on both your guys' parts.
Thank you, cee lo. Adam.
I think what austin took and did with the song
Probably put him in an advantage in this particular situation,
But that's not to say that your voice isn't equally as strong.
For the sake of the battle round,
I-I think that austin took this one, though.
Blake, you have the final decision.
Give us some thoughts.
My first thought was that,
On paper, how stupid this looks.
It's -- I'm trying to figure out who my best country singer is,
And I had y'all do a bee gees song.
But it worked. Good coaching.
And it sounded -- it really sounded great. It sounded great.
Yeah. Yeah, that was awesome.
Yeah.
You know how painful it is for me to give you a compliment.
I know.
But I have to compliment you on this.
One of the things
That I remember mentioning to you, brian,
Was how austin really loses himself in a song,
And you do, too, but the way austin connected with it
Was he left his heart laying out there on the stage.
Technically, I think I would put you guys at a --
At a dead even -- it's right there.
You could've went in the studio
And laid those vocals down, each of you,
And could've put those records out right then.
Who's the winner of this battle, blake
Um...
The winner of this battle is austin.
Austin jenckes moves on to the knockouts
Representing team blake.
Congratulations.
Oh, I'm so excited to be on blake's team still, man.
I mean, he's -- he's who I wanted
As a coach going into this,
And the fact that, you know, he kept me
Makes me feel so good.
All right, coaches, let me remind you
Brian pounds is available to steal.
Brian, anything you'd like to say to coach blake
Or any of the coaches
I just want to say, blake,
Thank you so much for the opportunity.
It's been an incredible honor being on your team,
And thank you very much for believing in me. Thank you, man.
Thank you for being on the show.
Best of luck to you. Keep singing.
Brian pounds, everybody.
With brian and austin,
It just kind of came down to, you know,
Austin has this way of sounding and looking
Extremely passionate about what he's doing,
And it's hard not to get wrapped up into that.
I think austin's gonna take my team deep
Into this competition into the live shows.
Whoo.
I love you, guys. I love you, aust.
I love you. Congratulations.
Still to come...
Watch you burn, sink in the river, the lessons I've learned
...showstopping performances...
I'm waking up
...that ignite our coaches to steal.
Oh!
Hold on! We got a steal!
Daly: WELCOME BACK TO THE BATTLE ROUNDS.
Let's head over to adam and his adviser,
Grammy award-winning songwriter/producer ryan tedder.
I'm really stoked that you're here, man. I love my team.
It's the best one I've ever had.
I'm just ready to get into it.
Right on, bro. Stoked to be here.
Thanks for having me. Awesome, dude. Welcome.
Let's look at adam's first matchup of the night.
Versus 20-year-old matt cermanski
From phoenixville, pennsylvania.
Returning artist james irwin
Failed to turn a chair season four.
Last time I performed,
My wife, erin, and my son couldn't make it,
And this time around, I got my good-luck charms.
The lengths that I would go to
His powerful performance got all four coaches to turn.
I don't think anyone has ever come back
And had all four chairs turn around.
Only thing I'll tell you is I still think
That there are things that need some work.
I'm gonna have to go with adam.
Oh! Oh!
Singer/songwriter matt cermanski
Also came back to give it another try.
I think the song that I have this year
Definitely shows who I am.
I said, hey, hey
All you gotta do for me, girl
His performance turned three chairs.
Just the amount of growth I've seen
In two performances is exponential.
I'm gonna go with adam.
Hey, fellas.
Hey, what's going on What's up
I never would've thought that I would be sitting here
With ryan tedder and adam levine. You can't beat that.
I'm matt. Nice to meet you. Hey. Ryan.
Ryan tedder -- he is an amazing songwriter.
You know, he's a hit machine.
I paired you guys together
'cause neither one of you made it last season.
We're the comeback kids.
I want to see how you handle this stage of the game together,
Because, you know, you both are in a very unique position.
James and matt both have drastically different tones,
But they both have a lot of heart and soul
And they have a lot of emotion attached to what they do,
And whoever moves me the most is gonna win my vote.
This guy's gonna be the best coach
You could possibly have for this tune,
'cause it's his song -- "Counting stars."
This is about my struggle to pursue music full time.
I got married relatively young,
So now I'm supporting somebody else,
And I used to sit around thinking about,
"I can't wait till I'm not counting every single penny.
I want to be just chilling, counting stars."
Lately, I've been, I've been losing sleep
I can really relate to this song
Because I want nothing more in the world
Than to be able to support my family doing what I love.
I see this light like a swinging vine
Swing my heart across the line
Don't sit on the words that long.
Instead of I see this li-I-ght like a swinging vi-I-ne
Which is more what you were doing,
It would be I see this light like a swinging vine
Swing my heart across the line
You got to... push it out.
You got some coffee. Yeah.
James got a little subdued sometimes,
And I like that kind of super smoky, very subtle thing.
I just want to make sure it doesn't mean he's lacking energy.
I was thinking if we could lower it a whole step.
I'd feel more comfortable in b minor.
How do you feel Either way is fine.
Lately, I've been, I've been losing sleep
Dreaming about the things that we could be
I felt a little timid going into the rehearsal.
Knowing that you're singing your adviser's song,
It adds a little more pressure.
Everything that kills me makes me feel alive
That's what I had a question about, yeah.
I think it's too low for you.
Sometimes that sweet spot... yeah.
...is a little higher than you think.
It did feel a little draggy, you know
I feel something so right
Doing the wrong thing
Matt did not want to go to the key that we had him in,
And adam and I were both persistent.
Ooh, I surprised myself.
Dude, goose bumps, man.
Don't ever say that you can't do that,
'cause you just did it.
I feel like james is a more naturally gifted singer,
But matt, easily out of anybody else,
Can sneak up and steal this away from him.
As their battle nears,
James and matt meet with adam and ryan
For their final rehearsal.
Lately, I've been, I've been losing sleep 1388 01:01: 01:01:16,938
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But, baby, I've been, I've been praying hard
Said no more counting dollars
We'll be, we'll be counting sta-a-a-rs
Awesome. So much better.
James, you have this kind of just natural ability
To hit all the notes, to do it in a way
That is astonishingly precise, but at the end of the day,
Try to inject a little bit more soulfulness into it.
James is an incredible singer,
But he's gonna have to bare his soul a little bit
In order to move on.
Matt, when you do
Lately, I've been
Really make sure that you save your breath
To get that note up where --
Right now, it's just a little short
Of where it needs to be pitch-wise,
Let me ask you a favor.
'cause I have a feeling... uh-huh.
...part of my problem right now
Is I can feel you are thinking about the guitar. Okay.
The guitar, for me, is somewhat of a security blanket.
And I feel something so right
But I kind of surprised myself again.
I think I sounded better
When I didn't have the guitar in my hands. Yeah
I-I-I feel something so wrong doing the right thing
That was great. You guys are fantastic.
And I think that it's come leaps and bounds.
Matt and james are just incredible together.
Those are the two guys in this competition
Who can surprise you at any moment,
So I really have no idea what I'm gonna do
As far as their battle is concerned.
Coming up...
Watch it burn...
...two returning artists put it all on the line
To stay in the competition,
Leaving adam with a tough decision.
Matt!
James!
TO VISDaly: WELCOME BACKINES AND WTO THE BATTLE ROUNDS.EEK.
Everything has been building to tonight's battle,
And james and matt are about to go head-to-head.
Being on the show twice now,
I don't think anybody comes back for a third time.
Only one of us is going to move on, and I want it to be me.
I'm here to win for my family.
I really want to do this for them.
I feel like I'm here for a reason.
I got those four chairs to turn for a reason,
And I'm gonna win this battle.
Entering the stage, it's team adam's comeback kids.
Former construction worker and family man,
Here he is, james irwin...
...versus the singer/songwriter
Who's found his voice, matt cermanski.
The battle starts now.
Lately, I've been, I've been losing sleep 1480 01:08: 01:08:05,647
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But, baby, I've been, I've been praying hard
Said no more counting dollars
We'll be counting stars
Yeah, we'll be counting stars
I see this life like a swinging vine
In my face, there's flashing signs 1488 01:08: 01:08:34,542
Seek it out and ye shall find 1489 01:08: 01:08:36,411 Old, but I'm not that old
Young, but I'm not that bold
I don't think the world is sold
On just doing what we're told
And I-I-I feel something so right
Doing the wrong thing
And I-I-I feel something so wrong
Doing the right thing
I couldn't lie, couldn't lie, couldn't lie
Everything that kills me makes me feel alive
Lately, I've been, I've been losing sleep
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But, baby, I've been, I've been praying hard 1502 01:09: 01:09:19,687 I
said no more counting dollars 1503 01:09: 01:09:25,527 We'll be, we'll be counting sta-a-rs
Let's take that money, watch it burn
Sink in the river, the lessons I've learned
Sink in the river, the lessons I've learned
Take that money, watch it burn
Sink in the river, the lessons I've learned
Take that money, watch it burn
Sink in the river, the lessons I've learned
Lately, I've been, I've been losing sleep 1513 01:09: 01:09:51,152
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But, baby, I've been, I've been praying hard
Said no more counting dollars
We'll, we'll be counting stars
Take that money, watch it burn
Sink in the river, the lessons I've learned
Take that money, watch it burn
Sink in the river, the lessons I've learned
Give it up for matt and james,
Representing team adam in the battle rounds.
Adam, tough decision there, man.
Blake.
I think that you guys had the same strengths
And weaknesses in your vocals.
It got better as the song went on,
But it was cool, james,
To actually watch you do a performance.
Last two times I heard you sing,
Most of the time, my back was to you.
You're just kind of sneaking around that stage
And slipping up on people
And hitting them in the face with a note.
Matt, I think you have a different-sounding voice.
Actually, it reminds me of adam's voice a little bit
'cause it's very pointed and precise.
I'm not gonna say I'm a huge fan of adam, but I love maroon 5.
Matt, I think you have a bigger voice in the upper register,
But I think james has the better pitch.
I'm gonna have to go with james.
Thank you, blake. Christina.
Matt, that chorus falsetto, you, I think, did a better job of.
It was a little bit stronger and a little bit more accurate.
James, you started strong, but you ended it strongest.
Thank you.
Thank you, coach christina. Cee lo.
I don't know, man. I don't know.
Like, and this doesn't happen often,
But I disagree with christina because...
It's all right.
...I think it was a fly rendition of the song.
It was hype, dope, and fresh,
But I do agree with what blake said.
You do have a fuller voice.
It sounds like you sing from the throat
As opposed to your chest vocal,
But you cut through a little clearer for me,
But it was thinner.
I say james.
Thank you.
Thank you, cee lo green.
Adam, you have the final decision.
So, first of all, you know, you guys are the comeback kids.
You know, you guys both kind of represent
That idea that you can not get chosen for a team,
And then you can come back and make it.
So, I appreciate that from both you guys.
Thank you.
I believe in you both.
It was a flawed performance. I'm not gonna lie.
I love the energy that you both brought,
But I think you both definitely have work to do,
Regardless of who moves forward here.
Um...
Adam, who is the winner of this battle
The winner of this battle...
Matt!
James! James!
The winner of this battle...
Uh...the winner of this battle is james.
James is the winner of this battle for team adam.
James irwin moves on to the knockout rounds.
Congratulations.
I think that james is really capable
Of doing a lot more than he's done so far.
It wasn't either one of their best performances,
But james was a little more connected.
Hey. Congratulations.
What's up, guys Hey, big guy.
Come here. Yay.
Did you see daddy out there singing
I feel truly humble to be here, you know,
Coming from last season
Where I didn't get any chairs to turn around,
And getting four chairs
And now making it to the knockout rounds,
It's amazing, so I'm just -- I'm very happy right now.
All right. All right.
Love you. I love you, too.
All right, coaches, let me remind you
That matt is available to steal.
Matt, anything you want to say to coach adam
Or any of the coaches
I just want to say thank you for working with me
And, you know, helping me out
With just everything you did with that song.
That means a lot to me. I'm proud of you, man.
Thank you. I really am.
Ladies and gentlemen, give it up. Matt cermanski.
And his time on "The voice" Comes to an end.
Thank you.
It's sad that it's the name of the game
That not everybody can stick around,
But there's only so many slots,
And I got to be moved by the moment.
I don't like this breaking hearts.
It sucks, but I feel blessed to be here.
You know, getting the chance to work with adam was awesome.
You know, I just -- the advice that he gave me,
I'm gonna take forward and, you know, keep going with my career.
Matt, you did great. Good job.
Thank you. You won it in my eyes.
Thanks, mom.
When it gets cold outside...
You can download the winners' full versions
OF TONIGHT'S BATTLE PERFORMANCES ON iTUNES.
You don't know what it's like
Coming up...
You have to have conviction in these lyrics.
...christina shows her team how it's done...
I'm not ready to make nice
I'm not ready to back down
...leading to a heartfelt performance
That makes her extremely proud...
Go 'round and 'round wow.
...and vulnerable to losing one artist to a steal.
Welcome back to the battle rounds.
Let's head over to christina and her adviser,
Grammy nominee ed sheeran.
Here's a look at how this next battle pair got here.
Versus 23-year-old lina gaudenzi from miami, florida.
Destinee quinn came into the blind auditions
Hoping her singing experience at a biker bar
Would help her make a team.
Cowboy, take me away
She turned two chairs...
I loved what I heard, and I want to win already.
But I have to go with christina. Whoo!
...and picked christina as her coach.
Lina gaudenzi had success as a teen model.
I loved modeling,
But then I went through a very awkward stage
Where I gained well over 40 pounds.
So I stopped modeling.
She focused her attention on her other passion, music.
Climbed a mountain and I turned around
Her rendition of fleetwood mac's "Landslide"
Got two coaches to turn.
I think that you are just something
Really special and unique,
And I think that people need to know who you are.
Christina.
HI. Christina: HI, GUYS.
Hello.
When I walked into the room and saw ed sheeran,
I kind of did, like, a little squeal.
I was like, "Oh, my god."
How are you feeling Good. How are you
Lina and destinee I paired together
Because they bring a very soft sensibility to a song.
So, I chose "I'm not ready to make nice" By the dixie chicks
To sort of make each other step out of that comfort zone.
This is an opportunity for both of you
To sort of dig in your heels.
Not in an aggressive way, but more in a passionate --
Emotional. Yeah.
You're gonna kick a little a*s this time around.
You know what I mean I like it.
Let's see how it goes.
I'm not ready to make nice
I'm not ready to back down
It doesn't intimidate me that destinee's a country artist
Because no matter what,
I'm always gonna do my own thing with a song.
I'm gonna take it and try to make it my own.
I've paid a price
I don't think this song is more my wheelhouse at all.
Lina -- she can do all these crazy ad libs and runs --
Things that I can't do.
I'm just a straightforward singer.
'cause I'm mad as hell
And I can't bring myself to do what you think I should
Vocally, you're rushing it a little bit.
People have to feel the emotion.
I know it's, like, a weird, tricky thing.
You can go Forgi-I-ve
You can do it held out,
Or Forgive
And fall off with your breath.
You have to have conviction in these lyrics. I like that.
It's too late to make it right
I probably wouldn't if I could
'cause I'm mad as hell
"I'm not ready to make nice" --
It's a very difficult song to sing,
Not vocally, but to kind of really get into the emotion of it,
Like, to connect with it.
Still mad as hell
And I don't have time to go 'round and 'round and --
It's quite nice to have the big
I'm not ready to make nice
And have everyone go be angry.
I was trying to express to them that it's just the emotion
That pours through that allows the audience and the listener
To truly be moved.
It's so important to know how you connect lyrically to this,
Even if you turn it into this competition
And what it means to you.
I'm not ready to make nice.
Like, in the sense of, "I'm not ready to give in."
I want them to really go for it,
And hopefully, by the time they hit that stage,
They'll be putting some fire out there.
With their battle near,
Destinee and lina have one last rehearsal
With christina and ed.
It's too late to make it right
Probably wouldn't if I could
'CAUSE I'M MAD AS HELL AND I DON'T HAVE TIME TO GO ROUND
In the beginning of the battle rehearsal,
And I disconnected.
Lina, it's important to know
That you have everything that you need,
And I think you're overthinking it.
Okay.
I would love to hear just you sing.
Tune out everything in the room.
I'm not ready to make nice
I'm not ready to back down
Lina just needed to get out of her own way for a second
In order to just listen to her heart
And connect with the lyrics.
...should
That was really good.
Christina really saw that I'm an overthinker,
And she addressed that right away,
And it really clicked with me.
But I'm still waiti-I-I-I-ng
Destinee, could you go...
But I'm still waiting
...and then go down
But I'm still waiting
It'll be nicer if you can...
I'm still waiting
Waiti-I-I-ng
I-I-ng destinee.
I'm still waiting
I was struggling with harmonies
'cause deep down inside, I'm super nervous.
If I don't give it my all and step up to the plate,
I think I could be going home.
Since we haven't worked on anything eye contact,
I'm gonna sing to somebody, just pretend, like, in the distance.
Forgive
Sounds good
Forget
I'm not sure I could
I can relate to this type of a song,
Feeling empowered by the fact
That everyone's sort of picking on you for being who you are.
I'm not ready to make nice
I'm not ready to back down
That was awesome
To have christina aguilera right in front of you singing.
I thought, "Oh, my god.
How am I gonna sing after christina aguilera"
But it was actually really cool that she showed us
What she wanted us to do onstage.
She was very inspiring.
It's like that kind of emotion.
Just wanted to leave you with that note. Thank you.
Go sing your hearts out.
With lina and destinee, this song will convey
The best possible light for both of them,
Depending on how much they allow themselves to let go.
They need to be able to do that
If they want to get further along in this competition.
They need to fight for it.
Coming up...
I'm not ready to back down
Still mad as hell wow.
...destinee and lina leave their hearts on the stage
In a battle you can't miss.
It's too late to make it right
And later...
Make this the hardest decision,
'cause this is one of the best battles, I think.
...two of adam's favorites face off in an unbelievable battle...
Radioactive
Radioactive whoo!
...that proves anything can happen.
Oh!
Hold on! We got a steal!
Welcome back to the battle rounds.
Everything has been building to tonight's battle,
And destinee and lina are about to go head-to-head.
Nervous Nerves are good.
Use them just to get you excited, and then let it go.
Yeah.
Because, honestly, the audience is gonna want to be entertained.
They're gonna want to be, like, into every single word
That comes out of your mouth.
And so, milk that and enjoy that moment.
We will. You girls are good.
Give me your hands.
You guys are really good. I promise you. Thank you.
You got this. We'll see you out there.
Okay.
I definitely feel like I've been able to relate to the song.
I mean, just thinking about people who've told you you can't
Or, you know, yourself telling you you can't.
I'm ready to combine all those things together
And -- really emotional.
I did have a lot of nerves in the beginning,
But if I listen to the advice christina gave us
And just completely overcome my fears and being in my head,
Then I think I can do well today.
It would be heartbreaking not to win
Because opportunities like this don't come very often.
Which team christina vocalist will win this battle
Will it be the biker-bar singer, destinee quinn...
...or the classically trained ex-model, lina gaudenzi
This battle begins right now.
Forgive
Sounds good
Forget
I'm not sure I could
They say time heals everything
But I'm still waiting
I'm through with doubt
There's nothing left for me to figure out
I've paid a price
And I'll keep paying
Oooooh
I'm not ready to make nice
I'm not ready to back down
I'm still mad as hell
And I don't have time to go 'round and 'round and 'round
Probably wouldn't if I could
'cause I'm mad as hell
I can't bring myself to do what it is you think I should
Oooooooooh
I'm not ready to make nice
I'm not ready to back down
I'm still mad as hell
And I don't have time to go 'round and 'round and 'round
It's too late to make it right
Probably wouldn't if I could
'cause I'm mad as hell
I can't bring myself to do what it is you think I should
Ye-e-e-ah
Forgive
Sounds good
Forget
I'm not sure I could
They say
Time heals everything
But I'm still waiti-I-I-I-ng
And their coach standing.
All right. We'll start with you, cee lo.
Destinee, lina, great job.
Let me start by saying --
Lina, you have a very strong and definitive voice,
But I've got to say, I love it when the attentions are split
Between something passionate and the performance arts.
I appreciated that on both of you guys.
And, destinee, even more so,
I did watch you really live that song out loud,
And it was really wonderful.
Thank you, cee lo. Adam levine. Thank you.
First of all, I think you both were very connected to the song.
There were no issues with emoting
And doing all those things.
That was all as good as it can be.
I think that technically, there were some problems,
Just certain moments that kind of fell flat for me
On both sides.
But, you know, if I were have to make a decision,
I actually, because of your chops and potential,
I think I probably would go with lina.
Thank you.
Thank, adam. Blake.
I'll start with destinee.
You know, there's something to be said
For having that connection with a song.
And there's a few times where I thought,
"Is she really feeling this way about that song"
And by the end, I saw you standing there,
And it almost looked like you were about to cry
You were so mad, you know
It was like, "She's really doing that onstage."
So for that reason, I give you a free pass
On some of the technical things
That maybe adam was talking about.
As far as just actually coming up here and the execution,
I think overall, lina actually performed the song better
From start to finish.
I think she hit all the marks.
I do.
All right.
Coach christina, give me some thoughts on that battle.
First of all, this is a song
That if you're not connected on an emotional level,
This'll fall right flat on its face.
And I just wanted you guys to find who you are
Within this song -- what does this song mean to you
And you did it.
I'm so living for these girls right now, you guys.
Christina, two highly worthy vocalists here.
Who is the winner of this battle
I'm torn between emotion or range,
'cause I feel like destinee, you nailed emotion.
You won that.
And I think you won it for your range
And pushing yourself to go to other places.
This is an equal win, okay This is a win-win situation.
It really is.
Who is the winner of this battle, christina
The winner -- oh, my gosh. I don't even know, carson.
Welcome back to the battle rounds.
Before the break, destinee and lina
Gave the most emotional performance of the night.
I'm not ready to back down
I'm still mad as hell
And I don't have time to go 'round and 'round and 'round
Wow.
Now christina must choose
Who will remain on her team.
Who is the winner of this battle
The winner -- oh, my gosh. I don't even know, carson.
Oh, god.
You know what
I got into this business
Because music is something that I think is so great
Because it's about making people feel moved,
And that's why, destinee, you're it.
Destinee is the winner of this battle
And moves on to the knockout rounds.
Congratulations.
I can't even, like, express how happy I am right now.
Like, the tears aren't like sad tears.
They're complete and total happy tears.
Coaches, let me remind you that lina is available to steal.
Lina, was there anything you'd like to say --
Oh, we got a steal right there from adam!
Adam levine comes in to steal lina from team christina.
Thank you.
Adam, jump in here.
What was it about lina
I thought that there was so much potential.
And I think that if I can have a chance to see what your best is,
That we could really blow people away. Thank you.
I'm so happy right now.
Give it up for lina, everybody.
I didn't turn for lina in the blinds,
But, you know, thank god I kind of got in there
'cause I still think there's
Some diamond-in-the-rough thing going.
I'm gonna do my best. We got this. We got this, okay
Of course I have the best thing going into the knockouts.
Lina and juhi are awesome,
And I'm excited to see what they're gonna do.
Oh! So awesome.
I've just been --
It's been such an amazing learning experience.
And I just didn't want it to end and it's not,
So I'm really happy.
Oh.
Mwah! Beautiful. Oh, my god.
What are you thinking about
What'd I do Is that a mosquito
What's wrong
Was it a mosquito I don't know!
I just saw it. Don't laugh!
What was it! I don't know.
What was it!
I don't know. Ohhh!
I don't know. I think it was a mosquito.
It was something on me. I don't like that.
I got it!
It was a fly. It was a fly.
It's gone. It's gone. It's gone.
What was it I don't like flies.
Yes! You sit in my chair.
I can't sit here. I don't like bugs.
As christina settles her nerves...
Ew!
...let's take a closer look
At our final battle of the night from team adam.
Versus 30-year-old will champlin from reseda, california.
James wolpert left college
And went to work at the apple store to support his dream.
I love tech, and I love gadgetry and stuff.
Computers are the tools that I use
To do most of my stuff like music and art.
And I won't let love disrupt, corrupt, or interrupt me
His powerful version of "Love interruption" By jack white...
I won't let love disrupt, corrupt, or interrupt me
...got four chairs to turn.
All right. Nobody loves you more than me, dude. I promise.
That's not true. Dude, you can win this for sure.
I pick adam. Yes!
Oh!
Will champlin,
The son of chicago band member bill champlin,
Came to "The voice" Hoping to find success
To support his new family.
...mi-I-I-I-I-nd
But I go out...
And will started off strong getting three chairs to turn.
...not over you
I can't think of one thing
that wasn't spectacular about that performance.
That was incredible.
I know I got to make a choice. Adam.
He's k*lling us.
Ah!
'sup, fellers
Oh, my god. How you doing
How you doing Nice to meet you, ryan.
Ryan tedder.
Ryan. Nice to meet you.
Walking into rehearsals seeing adam
Alongside with ryan tedder was pretty amazing.
I'VE ALWAYS LOOKED UP TO BOTH MAROON 5 AND OneRebublic.
So, we didn't pair you guys together
Because you both happen to wear glasses.
That has nothing to do with this.
I think this had to do with taking you
A little bit out of your comfort zone,
Doing something that is pretty drastically different
That what we've already seen.
I'm waking up to ash and dust
James wolpert and will I paired together
For imagine dragons' "Radioactive."
I'm breathing in the chemicals
They are cut from the same cloth
As far as where they're coming from musically.
Having both of them moving forward
Would maybe be a little redundant,
So I need to see who is the strongest of the two.
Radioactive
Radioactive
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, whoa, I'm radioactive
Radioactive
Will, getting up into those high registers
Was more effortless for james.
Okay.
And pitch was a little flat.
Will doesn't have full mastery of his upper register
And a little bit of pitch problems,
But he's got no problem showing his soul.
He just needs to -- to wrangle
in some of -- a little bit of the technical stuff.
Pitch goes out when you lose breath.
When you lose control of your breath, it's because of nerves.
When you get nervous, it's 'cause you don't have muscle memory.
On a performance, it will come down
To who conquered their nerves the most.
Ryan was right. Nerves can get in your way.
If I could just conquer these nerves,
They will see the real will.
And then the only other comment is pick one moment,
Generally in the latter half of the song,
Steal the audience with that one word, that one line.
And you have to figure out where it is.
I think that your biggest issues
Are totally opposite of each other.
Yours is get the technical stuff under control... yeah.
...and make sure that it doesn't sound strained.
And for you, it's the opposite of, like,
You're doing it really perfectly.
You want to make sure that you can convey
The same kind of emotion.
Okay.
Adam mentioned that I needed to work on
Kind of how I emote during the song,
So back to the drawing board.
I'm gonna definitely blow their minds next time I sing it.
As the battle nears,
James and will meet with adam and ryan
For a final rehearsal.
I breaking in and shaping up
And checking out on a prison bus
Vibrato is both the best tool and your worst enemy.
When vibrato's overused,
It paints everything with the same color.
You know I'm waking up to ash and dust
As opposed to
I'm wa-a-king up to a-a-ash and dust Yeah.
In order for james to win this battle,
I think he needs to be wary of overstylizing
And that he is precise and nails every single note.
I'm breaking in and shaping up
Then stepping out on a prison bus
This is it, the apocalypse
Oh
There it is!
Radioactive, radioactive
Yeah, yes! Yeah.
Will, you jumped leaps and bounds.
Like, you nailed this.
Will actually blew my mind when I was in there.
And it's clear that he's stepped up his game.
It's gonna be interesting to see what happens when we're onstage.
Love you guys. Awesome. Cool, man.
James is definitely a serious contender,
And this is what looks like to be an uphill battle.
But I intend to make it very hard on him.
It's the night of the battle,
And james and will are about to face off.
The key to me winning this battle
Is add emotion to the song.
This is my shot. I don't want to mess it up.
It's not in my control, but I owe it to myself.
I owe it to my daughters to do the best I can.
I got to just play to win.
YOU GUYS READY FOR THIS YES. James: ABSOLUTELY.
Make this the hardest decision
'cause this is one of the best battles I think,
And you've done all the rehearsal you can.
And good luck. Thanks, man.
And have a good time, man.
Honest to god, that's what really --
That's what gets it done, you know
Yeah. We'll see you out there. All right.
Awesome, man. Awesome.
I need to win this battle to prove it was a good decision
To drop out of college and pursue music.
If I lose, I go back to square one --
No job, no place to stay, no nothing.
I backpedal.
This is not about following my father's footsteps.
There is no shadow at this point.
I think that I'm in my own light.
I want to win this battle for my wife, rosanne,
My daughter, harper, and myself.
Coming up...
James and will fight for a spot on team adam
In an epic vocal showdown...
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, I'm radioactive
Radioactive whoo!
...forcing adam to make
The toughest decision of the battle rounds.
Oh, I love it 'cause adam has no idea what he's gonna do.
FOR LIFE Daly: WELCOME BACK TO THE BATTLE ROUNDS.
Before our final showdown,
Let's see where our coaches' teams stand.
Adam picked
Returning pop-alternative vocalist james irwin
And stole indie artist juhi from team cee lo
And pop singer/songwriter lina gaudenzi
From team christina.
Blake kept southern rocker austin jenckes.
Cee lo chose pop singer george horga jr.
And christina picked soul singer josh logan
And country artist destinee quinn.
Entering now,
The computer expert and indie rocker, james wolpert...
Whoo!
...versus the new father continuing the musical legacy,
Will champlin.
The battle starts right now.
I'm waking up to ash and dust
I wipe my brow and I sweat my rust
I'm breathing in the chemicals
Whoa
I'm breaking in and shaping up
And checking out on a prison bus
This is it, the apocalypse
Whoa
And I'm waking up
I feel it in my bones
Enough to make my systems blow
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, I'm radioactive
Radioactive
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, I'm radioactive
Radioactive
I raise my flag, don my clothes
Said, it's a revolution, I suppose
We're painted red to fit right in
Yeah
Oh, I'm breaking in, shaping up
And checking out on the prison bus
This is it, the apocalypse
Whoa
Whoo!
All systems go
The sun hasn't died
Deep in my bones
Straight from inside
I'm waking up
And I feel it in my bones
Enough to make my systems blow
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, I'm radioactive
Radioactive
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, I'm radioactive
Radioactive
And there we have it, a battle for team adam!
Adam, we'll give you a minute before your final decision.
Let's get some thoughts from your fellow coaches.
Blake shelton, why are you laughing
Oh, I love it 'cause adam has no idea what he's gonna do.
I guarantee you right now.
I would say, james, you're the surprise out of that battle
Just because you don't look the part to me.
I mean, this guy comes up here and he's got his tie on,
The glasses, and the hair parted,
And it's just not right.
And you can shock people like that like you just did me.
Maybe I'm the only one,
But I just didn't expect that from you. No, me too.
Shock is what I aim for. Thank you.
Will, on the other hand, you know, looks the part
And is a badass to go with it musically, too.
It's just I'm gonna go with james just 'cause it's crazy.
Thank you, blake. Christina.
Will, to me, there was no question,
You had the more solid, consistent performance.
I thought that as soon as you started the song,
You were clear and you were very on-pitch.
I was a little bit surprised, james,
That you pushed a little too hard, which I think
Kind of strayed you off the note a little bit.
I don't know. I really liked you, will.
To me, you won this battle.
Thank you, christina. Cee lo.
James, I really like your style because it's so unassuming,
You know, to hear that aggression in your voice,
And it makes me wonder about you and how far you can go.
I just think for my own intrigue and amusement,
I think I like james better.
All right, adam levine, give me some thoughts
And then your final decision.
It was a lot more even that I had thought it was gonna be.
James, you had the least to prove
'cause you were a four-chair turn,
And you did a great job today.
You both did an incredible job.
I think that will was a huge surprise
Because even in the rehearsals,
Will stepped up from where he was in the beginning.
And, by the way, will had three chairs turn around.
It wasn't like it was one versus four. Right.
You guys are both obviously accomplished, amazing, great singers.
It's interesting because, will,
You do look more like what we hear.
And, james, you know, you look like you could be
Working the stock market -- in a cool way.
The juxtaposition's really interesting,
And I really love that about you.
Adam, who is the winner of this battle
I do believe that there's
room in this competition for both of you,
And so it's tough to make this decision.
I know.
The winner of this battle...
The winner of this battle is...
...james.
James wolpert, winner of the battle team adam!
Congratulations, james,
As you move on to the knockouts.
I think that james can really do anything,
A feeling that made me choose him over will.
Come here.
I am ready and raring to go into the knockouts
And just, uh, blow some minds again.
Coaches, let me remind you that will is available to steal.
Will, what would you like to say to your coach
Or any of the other coaches
Well, adam, I'm, uh, honored to have been on your team
And be able to work with you and ryan, as well.
Thank you so much.
A big thank you to will champlin, everybody. Yes!
Hold on! We got a steal! Whoo!
Christina aguilera scooping up will champlin!
Right
He's back in the game!
Back in the game, dude.
I love him. He's great.
I mean, I thought you were walking out.
I know. Was that shocking to you
Yeah, it was a little bit of a surprise.
Is that your baby over there That's my wife and baby.
Yeah, which is great, because a second ago,
You were just looking at your family like,
"I'm so sorry, guys."
And now you're back in the show.
He did you proud!
What was it about will
Because he brought it, to me.
I-I meant what I said.
You were consistent, you were steady,
And you followed through.
Thank you so much.
You're back on the program. Go get them, all right
Will champlin, everybody,
Has a second chance on "The voice."
We'll see him in the knockouts.
Formerly a member of team adam.
I liked it.
I feel like will was the winner of the battle.
I had to steal will
'cause he deserved to be in the competition.
Whoo!
I'm absolutely grateful that christina used her steal on me.
I think she relates to me musically.
I'm really proud to be on christina's team now.
Mwah!
Man, I hope there's not a nest of them things
'cause they'll -- usually if the weather's warm,
There's a bunch of them. Stop!
Just shut up!
You're such an idiot.
