My name is taylor beckham,
I'm 17 years old,
And i'm from dallas, texas.
I sing r&b,
Sort of jazzy, a little pop.
It's all mixed together.
So, was it always music
For you, taylor?
Was that
Your first love?
Actually, no.
I was a gymnast
From the time i was 6
To the time i was 12.
No kidding?
Mm-hmm.
Pretty serious
About it?
I was training
To be an olympic gymnast.
I'd say
That's serious.
Being in gymnastics that young
Was difficult
Because it was a full-time job.
It took a huge toll on my body,
And eventually i realized
Gymnastics was not my dream
Anymore.
I was like, "i'm done."
Right when i quit gymnastics,
Singing just became everything.
Jana:
Taylor carries her discipline
Into her singing every day,
Through constant practice.
She has worked so hard for this.

I'm just really proud.
Taylor: gymnastics, i expressed
Myself through my body,
And through music, i can express
Myself through my voice,

I'm 33 years old,
And i live in nashville,
Tennessee.
How did you
Get into music?
I was actually working
At a label as the receptionist.
My boss eventually heard
My demo,
And he said,
"i didn't know you could sing."
What happened after that?
I got a record deal.
From the label that you worked
At? They signed you?
Yeah.
Excellent.
After i got signed,
My first album went gold.
I got to play on tv shows.
I was riding tour buses
All around the country.
You know, it was like
Everything great was happening.
Then i made my second record,
And it didn't do as awesome
As i had hoped,
And my label and i parted ways.
The same week, my mama and
My sister and i lost our house
To the flood in nashville.
[ thunder rumbling ]
Our house filled up
With water so fast.
It was five feet high.
We had to be rescued by boat.
We lost everything we owned.
So, everything i had worked for,
It literally had gone.
Gone.
Right.
And right before that,
I was diagnosed with m.S.
And --

The fact
That i was diagnosed with m.S.,
That was really hard for me.
I still have my voice, and
I'm ready for this new start.

A long time ago.

My mom was born in cuba,
And my dad,
His parents are cuban, so, yeah.
I'm a cuban american.

When i was around
Six or seven years old,
I was chosen to be on
This amazing family show,
In spanish,
Called "sábado gigante."

I would do comedy skits, like,
Acting and singing and dancing,
And i was part of the show
For, like, six years.
It was just
An amazing experience.
When the show ended,
I didn't know what to do.
You always closed yourself
In your room

For hours and hours.
I know.
My parents came into
The picture, and they're like,
"you have to, you know,
Build a more realistic life."

To go back to school
