singing competition returned.

the blind auditions

together for the first time,
our four superstar coaches.

and newcomers shakira and usher

were treated to a night
of astounding voices...

but i'm looking
for the first lady.

each coach started building
a team of 12.

two-time returning champ,
blake, scored the most,

with three singers.

what if somebody on my team
goes on to be a huge superstar?

that is the thing that keeps me
coming back as a coach

here on "the voice."

daly: usher landed
two vocal stars of his own.

i got great talent there.

i'm hoping to make them
as great as they can be.

daly: shakira picked up her
first two artists of the season.

this show is transforming
the lives of so many people.

daly: and adam fought hard
to win his only artist,

a four-chair turn.

being part of somebody else's
journey is very rewarding.

daly: as they make their way
to the stage,

our first artist, a veteran
nashville country singer,

is hoping to make
her blind audition count.

tawnya:
my name is tawnya reynolds.

i'm 32 and i'm originally
from new mexico.

at a very early age,
i wanted to be in nashville.

i wanted to be playing music
and getting gigs,

because i am
country to the core.

it's what i love, and i want
to share that with the world.

my parents are the most
wonderful people and supportive,

and they packed up everything
i owned, drove me to nashville.

she didn't know a person there,
didn't have a job,

and she had the guts
just to go out there and say,

"leave me here.
this is what i want to do."

and, um...

it was tough to leave her.

i play out four to five nights
a week for little to no money.

places like hotel lobbies

and wherever they let me play
for, maybe, tips.

it's been a long 12 years.

in nashville, it's a lot of work
for little to no appreciation.

i've been shot down
by every label in town.

the best thing i got
out of being in nashville

is my husband.

cole:
the main thing that tawnya's
always had is belief in herself.

but for a coach to say,
"you can do this,"

i think just will really
take her confidence

just to a new level.

tawnya: okay.

i'm at a point where
if something doesn't happen,

then this is
the level i am forever.

i look forward to learning
something that i haven't yet,

even though i've been
in the game as long as i have.

that he's much more than
just a pretty face.

josiah:
my name is josiah hawley.

i'm from fort smith, arkansas,
and i'm 27.

i started singing when
i was about 14 at my church.

we worshipped
with the youth group.

and then,
i met my wife when i was 18

when she started going to
the church i was going to.

two years later, we're married,
and everything's good.

tell me a little bit
about your pursuit of music.

well,
my dad's a jazz pianist,

so i kind of grew up
in a music family.

what i learned from my dad was,
like,

if you're gonna be good at
something, you got to practice.

so, i enrolled in belmont school
of music as a vocal major.

one day, when i was at school,

i was approached
about being a model.

[ camera shutter clicks ]

i've been traveling nonstop
the past couple years.

it's been a lot of hard work,

but that's how
i've been able to pay my bills.

but music's my heart.

i'm really proud
of the steps

that he's taken to get here.

he really had to think about it
and pray about it,

and he's worked really hard.

he belongs
on a stage singing.

that's just
where his heart is.

are you nervous?
excited.

i'll be good.

i'm going to sing

singing one of the coaches'
songs could be a risk,

but i'd love
to have adam push the button.

if any of them push the button,
i'm gonna be like, "yes."

i am a geologist by profession.

abraham: growing up,
i knew i could sing,

but i didn't always know

i wanted to do it
in front of everybody

because i was a very shy kid.

when i was 13 years old,

my sister put me
in this little karaoke contest.

once i stepped on that stage,
it really opened my life up.

for me, all of a sudden,
i existed.

what's happened since then
that's led you to "the voice"?

once again,
the culprit over here --
your sister?

yeah. shows up at my house
and says,

"you want to do
a karaoke contest?"

but what i thought
was a small karaoke contest

turned out to be one of
the largest karaoke contests

in the country for
"the oprah winfrey show."

oh, wow.
i competed for two weeks.

i had an amazing time,

and i was able
to bring that win home.

wow, you won it?
yes, sir.

when i look at "the voice,"

i see it
as an amazing opportunity

because i have
a lot more to learn.

seeing that chair turn around
is a chance for me

to work with somebody
that i truly respect,

that i truly
want to learn something from.

it's about becoming better.

i'm 19 years old, and i'm from

my first language is spanish,

and i'm very proud
of my latin culture.

i was born in el salvador.

i came here
when i was 19 years old

so my daughters
can have a better life.

i didn't have
anything at all,

so i just looked for a job
and tried to get into college.

she even has her own business.
i'm very proud of her.

she made her own dreams
come true,

and it's just
a great example for me.

currently,
i study music business,

and i was able to find
an internship

in a music studio
in new york city.

i've been really lucky because
i get to record for free.

i need a coach to turn around

because they've been
in this industry for so long

that they will know how to
help me improve as a singer.

for my blind audition,

which means,
"i will never give up."

singing in spanish will probably
be a blessing and a curse

because not everyone's
gonna know what i'm saying,

which makes me have to
work harder and emote.

sarah: my name is sarah simmons.

i'm from memphis, tennessee,
and i'm 22 years old.

i'm studying music
at visible music college

in memphis, tennessee.

because it's such
a great opportunity,

the president of my music school
let me leave college

to come audition
for "the voice."

i know i was born to sing.

my mom used to
play the guitar and sing,

and my dad's been a musician
since i was young.

music has been such a release
for me in so many hard times.

my dad was in and out of my life
due to addiction to drugs.

my parents got divorced.

it was really hard
to see my family fall apart.

but my dad has been clean
for three years,

which is incredible.

the only advice i can give you
is just be yourself.

because
you have a natural talent,

and you will touch hearts
when you sing.

so, just do your best.
