Welcome to "The Voice." I'm Carson Daly.

The battles are over.

Right now, each coach
has 10 artists on their team.

And tonight, the pressure is on,

as we begin the brand-new knockout round.

Over the next two nights,
each team will take this stage,

and the artists will compete
once again, voice to voice,

against their own teammates.

Half of our artists move on.
The other half go home.

Tonight, 10 artists from each team remain,

and they'll have to survive
one more hurdle

to make it to the live playoffs.

This is the knockout rounds.

The knockouts are an exciting
new phase of the show.

Daly: Each artist
will perform individually

against one of their own teammates.

If you don't k*ll it, you're going home.

This is make it or break it.

Daly: It's the most important
round of the competition yet

because only five artists from each team

will advance to the live playoffs.

There's no more steals left.
It's go big or go home.

Who's your first artist?

And who the artists face

will be a surprise decision
made by their coaches.

It is nerve-racking not knowing who
we're gonna be paired up against.

It's frightening. There's no one
on my team that isn't good.

Daly: - How do you feel?
- I'm shaking.

Ooh! It's gonna be scary.

Daly: In the knockout rounds,

the artists will choose their own song.

Song choice is a huge factor
that goes into the competition.

For my knockout, I'm singing
"Love on top" by Beyoncé.

- "Call me maybe."
- "Grenade."

- "Maybe I'm amazed."
- "Lady marmalade."

- "Yeah 3x."
Adam: - They're choosing their songs.

That's a little dangerous, but
when they make the right choice,

it's that much more powerful.

- So, we're doing an Adam Levine song.
- Yeah.

Blake: I think that gives an artist the
chance to be the artist they want to be

because I need to find out who can survive

when we get into the live shows.

Kayla: Each round,

you want to show them that you've grown.

And hopefully,
I do a good enough job for him

to want to take me to the live rounds.

Daly: Because when they hit the stage...

I'm looking for the best singer, dancer,

performer, entertainer extraordinaire.

Daly: Who will advance
to the live playoffs...

I'd like to see my team swing for the fences

and kick everybody's butt.

I want an artist to shine individually

and be willing to take risks to win.

Daly: ...and who will go home?

If they make it to the live playoffs,

they'll have to excel, because this season

not every team is guaranteed
a spot in the live shows.

I'm looking at the larger
scope of things, and so

I'm trying to think as an A&R
or an executive producer.

Adam, it is time now
for your first knockout pairing.

- Who is your first artist?
- It's Joselyn.

Joselyn, please step down.

Look how cute little Joselyn is.

The lovely Kayla.

Kayla. Please step down.

Adam: I teamed up Joselyn and Kayla

'cause they're both young pop singers.

And I can only bring one
to the live shows,

so I want to see who's willing
to take more risks.

Daly: In the battle rounds,


continued to come out of her shell...

with fellow powerhouse Sylvia Yacoub.

I loved it, Sylvia.

Although Joselyn lost,
her performance inspired

both Adam and Blake to go for the steal.

For my knockout, I'm singing

I picked this song because I think

that it's really gonna show
that high range that I do have,

and it also shows
a little bit of my personality.

Joselyn is an astonishing singer.

Damn!
The fact that Christina let her go

is a very fortunate thing for me.

The one thing I would say...
those first lower notes...

there were a couple
little moments, pitch-wise...

just really hit those right.

Joselyn: I got to work with Adam
for the first time,

and he just gives great advice.

When you do go up in
the beginning of that chorus,

you don't want to push too hard,

- 'cause it could sound like there's
a tiny bit of strain. - Okay.

To get some input from Christina

I think it's gonna be an advantage for me.

Daly: 17-year-old Kayla Nevarez
came to the blind auditions

looking for an opportunity
to help her sick father.

- We better win now.
- Oh, we got this.

And her confidence and determination

pushed her through the battle rounds.

Kayla: For the knockout round,
I picked "Shark in the water."

It really shows off my tone, and
it's just a very vibe-y song,

and that's what I love about it so much.

Yeah, there ain't nothing wrong with that.

I think the only note

is you can change it up
a little more melodically.

[ High-pitched voice ]

Just sing through that background,

so it's a little more,
like, emotional at the end.

Kayla: Adam is a great coach.

He cares about you as an artist
and wants to help you work

on things that he knows
you can accomplish.

'cause they both have

very distinct pop, rock-'n'-roll voices.

And going into the lives,
I just wanted to be able to

focus all of my attention on one of them.

During the blind auditions,

Artist Vs. Poet's lead singer Joe Kirkland

impressed Adam.

Adam: You have an aggressive tone,

but you also have a lot of control.

I've never had anybody like you
because I've really never felt

like there's been anyone
that's really done it right.

Daly: Now he's one step closer to his
dream of becoming a solo artist.

You're great, man.

I must say... interesting choice there.

A little weird, right?

I'm singing "Mean" by Taylor
Swift for the knockout round.

- My first two songs have been a certain
style. - Yeah.

And I kind of wanted to prove
that I had a little versatility.

Adam: Joe might have the biggest hurdle

in the fact that he is doing
a Taylor Swift song.

You've got to give someone
a chance to surprise you,

and he actually convinced me
that it was a great idea.

♪ Why you got to be so mean? ♪

I think that's courageous,
and I think it's good.

If I could even feel
a little bit more attitude...

- Yeah. - You have a really cool grit
in your voice I love hearing.

I think the more you can access
that in this tune, the better.

The biggest challenge in this song
is making it 100% my own song,

and I definitely want to show Adam
that I have a lot of versatility.

Focus on making
those moments really strong

because that's gonna be the key
to make this work.

it could definitely

It's one of those songs
that connects with people.

It gives you an opportunity
to just let that emotion out.

Keep it solid like that?

The challenge in this song
for me is to make sure

that I do it justice without
being exactly like Bryan Adams.

That's not an easy one, bro. That's tough.

It's one of the biggest songs of all time.

That was pretty cool to me.

This is a really tough one,
Adam, I have to say.

You know, I was feeling both
of you on different levels.

Bryan, when you hit the...

...like, that... that crazy note,

that's an interesting chord change-up,

and it's a really special thing.

And you really nailed it beautifully.

Joe, you have this natural
charisma that you have onstage.

You almost remind a little bit
of Billie Joe.

My eye wants to be, like, drawn to you.

You have really pretty eyes.

I was sad to leave Cee Lo's team,

but I feel very, very privileged
to have this opportunity.

I'm really excited to be on Adam's team.

For the knockout round,

I chose this song

because I'm a huge fan of just,
like, American rock music.

It's so different
from what we've seen so far.

So, all I would say is,
don't over-rock it.

I want to feel a little bit more
of the control and the dynamic

that impressed me so much
in that battle round.

Adam: - I like Amanda's spunk.

Seeing her do this gives a whole
other side of who she is.

Sometimes, when you get too excited,

- it just doesn't sound as good.

I don't want you to curb it... I
just want you to be aware of it.

to be able to snag her for my team.

And you have this ability to do something

that seems almost supernatural to me.

I think you are incredible.

For the knockout round,

I don't want to sing it
like Jennifer Hudson.

I want to sing it like Michelle.

One thing that's great
about Jennifer Hudson

is that she always did
what she wanted to do,

and she always followed her own vision.

Right.

The most important thing for you
is to be comfortable.

Michelle: There's just so much pressure.

If I'm not consistent
with who I am as a singer,

that could cause me to go home

because Adam knows what I'm capable of.

What do I need to do in this
song to really bring it?

The show's about moments.

This, to me, feels like

- the first time everyone's really gonna
hear you. - Right.

Set yourself up so that you're
gonna have a great moment.

Adam: It's getting narrowed down

to the point now that's very serious.

You know, I'm gonna be left with five.

It's very cutthroat, and it's very fast,

but it's very telling of people's
ability to handle pressure.

There's infinite possibility

And so I just feel
like Michelle won today.
